Redefining slay queen concept – Perfectual’s

0

In the Ghanaian context, the term “slay queen” typically refers to women who use their physical appearance to charm men into granting them favours.

Some define it as a female whose primary aspiration is to go through life looking attractive and having fun.

Many women find this label offensive and degrading.

However, a communications professional, social entrepreneur and gender advocate, Perfectual Linnan Labik, believes that one can be a slay queen and also a successful boss in her field.

In an interview with The Mirror last Friday, Miss Labik said she enjoyed looking good and is often described as a “slay queen.”

She said that people were often surprised and confused when they saw her as the organiser of conferences and a leader in her industry.

Having initiated the Northern Education Support Initiative between 2012 and 2017 right after high school, she noted that many who encountered her were surprised when they compared her appearance with her accomplishments.

“For me, it’s always the expression of shock and confusion on their faces because I love to dress well and look fabulous. I enjoy life and many people see me as a slay queen, as the term is used in Ghana,” she said.

Miss Labik explained that those who initially looked down on her believed she was a woman without ambition.

However, they were taken aback upon realising that she is a graduate with multiple degrees and is actively promoting social projects while working with an international organisation, U.S Agency for International Development (USAID).

“Many people are quick to judge based on appearance, but I believe an industrious woman can also look good.

A woman can be versatile in her looks and still excel in her field.

My life is a testament to the idea that women shouldn’t feel constrained.

Women must be assertive because you can achieve anything while looking great,” Miss Labik told The Mirror.

Reflecting on her journey as a social entrepreneur and communications professional, she noted that her experiences helped her transition into the corporate world.

In 2018, after earning her first master’s degree from the University of Media and Communication (UniMac), she applied for an internship on a development project implemented by the University of Rhode Island, USA. Despite lacking job experience, she secured the position.

“During the interview, when I was asked about my job experience, I shared details about the projects I had undertaken through the Northern Education Support Initiative. I received the job offer and worked there from 2019 to 2021,” she explained.

Through the Northern Education Support Initiative, Miss Labik conducted education seminars, spelling competitions, career guidance and mentorship programmes and addressed topics related to adolescent reproduction in the Northern Region.

“Looking back, I realised how significant it was because I was very young. Just imagine the Ghana Education Service (GES) entrusting students to my care, transporting them to various locations in the region and ensuring they received meals. I managed this for five years before I was selected for the internship,” she said.

“Two months later, I was informed that I would be taking on the role of communications lead, marking the beginning of my career in communications.”
Miss Labik noted that many of her supervisors commented that her contributions far exceeded those

Blame the players – Amankwah Mireku defends Hearts of Oak coach amid poor run of form

0

Former Hearts of Oak captain, Amankwah Mireku, has jumped to the defense of head coach Aboubakar Ouattara, urging fans to shift their focus from blaming the coach to assessing the players’ performances.

The Phobians have endured a rough patch in the Ghana Premier League, with inconsistent displays leading to frustration among supporters. Many have pointed fingers at Ouattara, questioning his tactics and ability to turn the club’s fortunes around.

However, Mireku believes the blame should not be placed on the coach alone, emphasizing that players must take responsibility for their performances.

“How can you blame the coach when the players are not performing? No one can convince me that a coach should be blamed for a player not performing,” Mireku told Ghana Sports Page.

He further explained that a coach’s primary role is on the training ground, where he can correct mistakes and set tactical plans. However, during actual matches, it is up to the players to execute the game plan effectively.

“Do the coaches play football? A coach’s biggest work comes at the training grounds. That’s where he can stop play and correct mistakes, but in games, he cannot stop play when his player makes a mistake,” he added.

The former Hearts of Oak defender also highlighted the importance of having intelligent players who can adapt and improvise during matches, a quality he feels is sometimes lacking in the current squad.

Hearts of Oak’s title hopes to. A huge hit after losing four games in a row. But the Phobians need their poor run with a 1-0 win over Medeama to get back on winning ways.

They trail league leaders Kotoko by 6 points as they visit Vision FC on matchday 27.

Hundreds of men and women graduated from the Ghana Military Academy on Friday, April 11, 2025, in Accra.

The graduation of these gallant individuals, who have undergone several months of intensive training, was crowned with a colourful parade at the Teshie Military Academy and Training School.

This momentous occasion will remain etched in the memories of the graduates, as it marked the day they were officially commissioned into the Ghana Armed Forces.

One of the most unforgettable aspects of the day was the presence of the President of the Republic and Commander-in-Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces, John Dramani Mahama.

Ordinarily, the president commands attention at any public event he attends, but at the 2025 Ghana Military Academy graduation ceremony, he truly stole the show.

To the surprise and delight of many, President Mahama arrived at the event in full military regalia, a powerful symbol of patriotism and solidarity with the Ghana Military Academy.

The crowd erupted in cheers as the president, dressed in a striking white uniform, stepped out of his vehicle and made his way to his seat, holding the ceremonial sword at his side.

Sam George outlines measures aimed at reducing data prices

0

Minister of Communications, Digital Technology and Innovation, Samuel Nartey George Minister of Communications, Digital Technology and Innovation, Samuel Nartey George

The Minister of Communications, Digital Technology and Innovation, Samuel Nartey George, has provided details on ongoing efforts to reduce data costs in Ghana.

He emphasised that while he cannot unilaterally set data prices, significant policy measures are being implemented to influence affordability.

According to him, a Data Pricing Committee was established and given 14 days to produce a roadmap, but a report was submitted in just 13 days.

“I set up a Data Pricing Committee and gave them 14 days to come to me with a roadmap for implementation. And in 13 days, they submitted their report. It was made up of stakeholders, MNOs, and the regulator.

“So, we had that engagement, and they submitted their reports to me. The report included short-, medium-, and long-term policy reforms that needed to be implemented,” he stated during a press conference on April 11, 2025.

He further stated that the report, which contained short-, medium-, and long-term reforms, has been referred to the regulator.

Meetings have also been held to develop implementation strategies, including specialised data packages for students and gig workers.

“I referred it to the regulator. The regulator has gone on to meet with the MNOs about it. I’ve met with the MNO CEOs myself regarding the proposed framework. People expect me to simply set data prices, but that’s impossible. What I can do is use policy tools.

“For example, with some of the steps I’ve taken on spectrum allocations and tech neutrality, I’ve used those to negotiate with industry players. I’ve asked them to introduce specific packages, such as cheaper data bundles for students, which are more affordable per megabyte than regular data bundles,” he explained.

The minister continued, “Again, I’ve told them that for content creators and those working in the gig economy, we also want specialised, lower-cost data bundles. These discussions are ongoing. The regulator is finalising the technical modalities for these pricing models, which will soon be rolled out.”

The minister also mentioned ongoing discussions with Google concerning the Equiano subsea cable, which offers high-capacity bandwidth.

He criticised the previous government for missing the opportunity to secure a landing in Ghana, leading to the cable being routed through Togo instead.

“I think that in the medium to long term, we need to do two key things, first, bring in much more bandwidth into the country. I’ve already started conversations with Google about the Equiano cable, which is a high-capacity subsea cable. Because of its new technology, it carries a large amount of bandwidth. Unfortunately, due to shortcomings in the previous administration, Ghana missed out.

“Google initially wanted to land the cable in Ghana. They came here and were even given a licence by the NCA. But due to internal conflicts within the ministry over who got the licence, Google opted to reroute the cable through Togo. Now, it’s going to cost us around $50 million to reroute and create a patch landing here in Accra.

“I’ve held conversations with Google executives, and we’re working to ensure Ghana is included in the second phase of the Equiano project. That would significantly increase bandwidth in the country. And as you know, it’s a matter of demand and supply, the more bandwidth we have, the lower the data prices can become,” he pointed out.

He also highlighted the need for a dedicated telecom tariff to reduce electricity costs for telecom services, along with tax rationalisation to resolve instances of double taxation.

“Another thing we need to address, which I’ve been discussing with my colleague John and will also raise with the PURC, is the creation of a telecom tariff. Electricity is a major cost component in the pricing of telecom services,” Sam George said.

He continued, “We have mining tariffs and industrial tariffs, but no dedicated tariff for the telecom sector despite the heavy power usage. A lower telecom tariff would create a ripple effect. I’m also hopeful the Finance Minister will implement a VAT rationalisation. If we address double taxation and the cost components of data and voice services, we’ll start seeing a positive impact on data pricing.

“These are medium-term issues, likely to see results by the end of the year or next year, but we expect to see some initial reductions soon,” he concluded.

Engage youth to restore peace in Bawku – Minority tells Government

0

The Minority in Parliament has urged the government to take immediate and decisive action to address the renewed violent clashes in Bawku, calling for direct engagement with the youth and key stakeholders to help restore peace and stability.

Speaking at a press briefing held today April , addressing the recent controversies in the country especially the Bawku violence, the Ranking Member of Parliament’s Defence and Interior Committee, Rev John Ntim Fordjour, expressed the Minority’s deep concern over the worsening security situation, which has led to loss of lives and destruction of property.

“We, the Minority, convey our deepest sympathies to the bereaved families,” he said.

“To those injured, and to all individuals and organisations who have lost property as a result of the recent violence, our thoughts are with you.”

He stressed that the ongoing conflict requires a swift and proactive response.

He emphasised the importance of engaging young people in the affected communities, describing them as central to both the root causes and the resolution of the unrest.

“One of the key strategies we recommend is for the government to lead an honest and inclusive engagement with the youth and other stakeholders,” he stated.

“When their concerns are genuinely listened to and addressed, the root causes of the violence can be resolved, and peace can return.”He stated.

He added that such engagement would reinforce the mediation efforts currently being led by the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

“This will create the necessary atmosphere for the Otumfuo’s mediation to continue effectively, and for other stakeholders to lend their support in maintaining peace,” he noted.

Rev Fordjour commended the Asantehene for his leadership, describing his mediation efforts as “diligent” and “already yielding some positive results”.

“Otumfuo has taken very thoughtful steps in mediating the conflict and working towards the restoration of peace. The efforts made so far are encouraging,” he said.

“However, this recent escalation is a setback, and we are calling for calm and de-escalation so that the ongoing mediation can proceed without disruption.” He concluded.

The clashes in Bawku have led to several casualties and significant damage to property. The conflict, which is largely attributed to longstanding ethnic and chieftaincy disputes, has resurfaced over the years, making the need for a sustainable resolution more urgent than ever.

The Minority has called on the government to demonstrate leadership by fostering meaningful dialogue, promoting inclusion, and addressing the immediate triggers of the violence to secure long-term peace in the region.

Minority Urges Immediate Action on Bawku Crisis

0

Rev. John Ntim Fordjour

The Minority in Parliament has warned the government over what it describes as the “deteriorating and increasingly volatile security situation” in Bawku, calling for immediate and decisive intervention to prevent further bloodshed and humanitarian fallout.

Addressing the media at a press conference in Parliament today, the Ranking Member on the Defence and Interior Committee, Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, expressed grave concern over the persistent violence that has plagued the municipality in recent months. According to the Minority, the situation has spiraled out of control, marked by ‘sporadic shootings, arson, home invasions,’ and a mounting death toll, with many residents reportedly missing.

“The intensity and frequency of these attacks have reached alarming levels. What is particularly disturbing is the growing sophistication of weaponry being used, raising serious questions about the source of these arms and the effectiveness of measures to prevent their spread,” Rev. Ntim Fordjour stated.

The Minority cited recent targeted attacks, including the torching of the residence of Member of Parliament for Bawku Central, Mahama Ayariga, and attacks on passenger buses, as evidence of a deepening crisis.

They warned that the continued cycle of reprisals, if left unchecked, would further entrench lawlessness and insecurity.

Beyond the security concerns, the Minority highlighted the broader social and economic consequences of the conflict.

According to the Minority, schools have closed, healthcare delivery has been disrupted, and businesses are relocating out of fear, with public servants increasingly refusing postings to the area.

“The instability is crippling essential services. Children are being denied their right to education, and communities are left without access to healthcare. The humanitarian situation is worsening by the day,” Rev. Ntim Fordjour lamented.

As a key border town, Bawku’s unrest, the Minority warned, poses a national and regional security threat.
They noted the spread of attacks to neighbouring regions like the North East and Ahafo as a sign that the situation could escalate further if left unresolved.

The Minority is calling on the government to review its current security strategy and to engage all relevant stakeholders, including traditional leaders, civil society, and the affected communities, in a concerted effort to restore peace.

“The people of Bawku deserve to live in peace and security. The government must treat this situation with the urgency and seriousness it demands. Delays in action will only result in more lives lost and further destabilization,” Rev. Ntim Fordjour intimated.

The Minority reaffirmed its commitment to supporting all efforts aimed at achieving a sustainable resolution to the conflict and restoring normalcy to Bawku and its environs.

Frank Amoakohene wants to impose his preferred candidate on us — NDC members at Mampong fumes

0

According to a report from GhanaWeb, some members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Mampong, Ashanti Region, have voiced strong opposition against what they describe as undue influence by the Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, in the selection of the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for the area.

In a recent interview aired on TV Africa, these party members expressed frustration over the process, alleging that the minister played a significant role in manipulating the outcome of the MCE nomination.

According to them, despite a formal vetting process involving candidates such as Nii Adjabeng and Esther Dwomoh, the final list presented after the national-level vetting was altered.

A spokesperson for the group accused the regional minister of working in coordination with another individual, identified as Dada Alex, to push through a preferred candidate, thereby sidelining the legitimate choices made by the party’s structures.

“I want to put it on record that the regional minister orchestrated this with the help of one Dada Alex. He wants to impose his preferred candidate on us,” he said.

The situation escalated on April 10, when a group of youth from the party went on a rampage, setting party property on fire in response to reports that Esther Dwomoh had been nominated for the MCE position.

They insisted that the original shortlist from the vetting process consisted of three names: the 2024 parliamentary candidate for the constituency, Yakubu Yakubu; the current constituency chairman, Mohammed Kamil; and party activist Imoro Iddrisu.

How Benjamin Asare’s manager convinced him to snub Djibouti move before Hearts of Oak deal

Benjamin Asare is the captain of Hearts of Oak Benjamin Asare is the captain of Hearts of Oak

The manager of Hearts of Oak goalkeeper Benjamin Asare, Cecil Tagoe, has revealed how a timely conversation with Asare convinced the Black Stars’ number one to reject a move to Djibouti in favor of signing for the Phobians.

Despite Great Olympics suffering relegation in the 2023/24 Ghana Premier League season, Benjamin Asare impressed with his performances.

His standout displays caught the attention of Hearts of Oak, who moved swiftly to secure the 32-year-old goalkeeper.

Since joining Hearts, Asare has achieved remarkable success, notably earning a debut national team call-up and making his debut for the Black Stars in their crucial 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Chad and Madagascar in March 2025.

In an interview with Sporty FM, Tagoe shared how a critical conversation helped steer Asare away from a move to Djibouti.

“Before he left Olympics for Hearts, I had a deal for him in Djibouti. They wanted him urgently, but I sat him down and told him, ‘This is your career. I cannot stand in your way, but I just want the best for you. For you to go to Djibouti and come back to Ghana while the window is closed, I prefer you signing for Hearts of Oak for two years,’” he said.

Tagoe also expressed his confidence that staying in Ghana and excelling in the local league would be transformative for Asare’s career.

“After two years, just give me one year of excellent goalkeeping, and I promise you the sky will be the limit. He took my advice, signed for two years, and now we see Benjamin Asare earning his Black Stars call-up, with two games and two clean sheets,” he added.

Asare’s performances have also earned him a new contract with Hearts of Oak.

The club announced on Thursday, April 10, 2025, that the captain has penned down a two-year deal that will keep him at the club until 2027.

Doncic Shines Against Former Team As Lakers Seal Playoff Spot

0

Luka Doncic

Luka Doncic delivered an emotional yet dominant performance as the Los Angeles Lakers secured a playoff spot with a 112-97 win over his former team, the Dallas Mavericks.

In his first return to Dallas since a blockbuster mid-season trade in February, Doncic dropped 45 points, along with eight rebounds, six assists, and four steals. The Mavericks honoured the Slovenian star with a pre-game tribute video and fans were handed T-shirts reading “Hvala za vse” — Slovenian for “Thank you for everything.”

Moved to tears before tip-off, Doncic received a warm ovation from the Dallas crowd, but quickly shifted gears on the court, scoring 13 points in the first quarter and 31 by halftime.

“Everybody saw me, the way I reacted to the video,” Doncic told ESPN. “All these fans, I really appreciate it. All the team-mates I had, everybody had my back. I’m just happy.”

Doncic spent six-and-a-half seasons with the Mavericks and now looks to lead the Lakers deep into the playoffs.

‘I Collapsed for Seven Hours’

0

Former National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament for Odododiodio, Edwin Nii Lante Vanderpuye, has shared details of his traumatic experience during the tenure of former President Akufo-Addo’s administration in 2020 as reported by Ghana Web.

Vanderpuye’s recount comes amid tensions following the April 9, 2025, raid on the residence of Assin South MP, Reverend John Ntim Fordjour.

The NPP has condemned the incident in which National Intelligence Bureau operatives, armed with AK-47 rifles, tried to arrest Fordjour.

However, Vanderpuye argued that his experience under the NPP government was far more severe.

Speaking on Channel1 TV, he recalled being handcuffed and placed in the boot of a car on December 7, 2020, despite being a sitting MP.

He was subsequently dumped at the Regional Police Command, where he lost consciousness for several hours. “I was handcuffed and put in the boot of a car… I collapsed, I don’t know what happened for seven hours,” he said.

Vanderpuye also highlighted the arrest of 52 of his party officials and the tragic killing of his polling agent, emphasizing that many responsible for the violence remain free.

Regarding the recent events surrounding Fordjour’s attempted arrest, Vanderpuye dismissed the uproar as unnecessary drama.

He stressed that MPs could be arrested when not performing their official duties and that any invitations through the Speaker only applied when Parliament was in session.

“It is only a privilege, and that privilege is exercised through the Speaker,” he stated, critiquing the political theater unfolding around the incident.

Minority slams IGP over recruitment promise to Bawku residents

0

Minority Chief Whip, Frank Annoh-Dompreh has criticised the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno over what he describes as a reckless and unfortunate statement concerning the ongoing Bawku conflict.

Addressing  a press conference held by the Minority on the Bawku crisis, Annoh-Dompreh expressed deep concern over the IGP’s comment suggesting that individuals who lay down their arms could be considered for recruitment into the police service.

“The comment of the IGP — this is purported to be his major public statement ever since he was appointed. And maybe he made that statement just on the spur of the moment, but it is clearly an unfortunate statement.

“It is most unfortunate to say that if you lay down your arms, you’ll be considered for recruitment. It is out of place. If any other person said this, yes, we may not attach seriousness. But coming from the IGP — and the ramifications of that statement — it is critical,” Annoh-Dompreh said.

He warned that such remarks risk setting a dangerous precedent in other parts of the country, where similar crisis may occur.

Annoh-Dompreh urged the IGP to reconsider the statement, adding that such comments undermine the integrity of law enforcement and could embolden violent actors in volatile areas.

“Does it mean that people from other parts of the country will also just fight, and then when they lay down their arms, they will be considered for recruitment into the police service?” he asked.

The Bawku conflict, which has lingered for years, has seen a resurgence of violence, prompting national concern and renewed calls for lasting peace.

Meanwhile, President John Mahama has assured that the Asantehene-led peace mediation process, spearheaded by Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, will resume next week as part of intensified efforts to restore calm in the conflict-hit Bawku area.

This is why Ghana wants Elon Musk’s Starlink to open an office in the country

0

Ghana’s Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovation, Samuel Nartey George, has called for Elon Musk’s Starlink to establish a physical office in Accra as a condition for operating in the country, citing regulatory accountability and the need to protect Ghanaian consumers.

In an interview with TV3, the Minister expressed dissatisfaction with the current operational model of Starlink, which has no physical presence in Ghana despite having received approval to roll out services.

“I’ve asked the regulator to inform the company that they need to open an office in Accra. I don’t understand. They need to have an office,” Mr George said, adding: “You can’t operate in our country and not have presence here.”

Elon Musk explains why Starlink is ‘sold out’ in Accra and other African cities

See how much you will pay to use Elon Musk’s Starlink in Ghana

Ghana approves Elon Musk’s Starlink internet service, operations to start end of August

According to him, it was a strategic oversight for the National Communications Authority (NCA) to grant a licence to Starlink without requiring local residency.

He noted that the absence of a local office makes it difficult for the regulator to engage effectively with the company on matters that affect consumers.

“Today, if there’s a problem involving a client of Starlink and the regulator needs to speak with Starlink, we need to send an email to someone sitting somewhere in the US, and it will take them two to three weeks to come down. What kind of regulation is that?” he questioned.

Mr George further argued that all other telecom operators in Ghana have a local presence, making them accessible for swift consultations.

“When I need to meet the CEO of any MNO, I can call, and in an hour, he’s sitting in my office or at the office of the regulator for me to protect the interest of the Ghanaian people.”

He disclosed that the concern is not unique to Ghana, revealing that ICT ministers across the West African sub-region are collectively pushing for Starlink to establish local operations in each country.

“It’s a cause of concern, not just here in Ghana, across the sub-region. Most of the ICT ministers are worried about it… We [are] taking collective action. They must show physical presence in our countries,” he said, hinting that Starlink would “be hearing from us.”

Background

Starlink, a satellite internet service developed by Elon Musk’s SpaceX, received approval from the NCA to operate in Ghana and is expected to officially launch by the end of August 2024. The service is being managed locally by SpaceX Starlink GH LTD.

The technology uses a constellation of over 5,800 low-Earth orbit satellites to deliver high-speed internet, with some users enjoying download speeds exceeding 100 Mbps. Starlink’s entry is expected to revolutionise internet access in underserved rural communities where traditional infrastructure is limited.

However, the affordability of the service remains a challenge. In Nigeria, for example, Starlink charges $314 for initial setup and $27 monthly—costs far above those of local providers.

Prior to its official approval in Ghana, a black market allowed unauthorised users to access Starlink through its global roaming feature.

In a post shared on X on April 11, 2025, Shatta Wale stated that his primary focus is making music and generating revenue from his craft.

He emphasised that he is not in competition with any musician, contrary to ongoing speculations within the music industry.

“You think I am in competition with your so-called favourite, erh,” he said.

He further advised his critics to stop envying his success and instead focus on building a name for themselves.

Brent Crude Prices: Ghana likely to witness drop in fuel prices from May

0

CEO of the Centre for Environmental Management and Sustainable Energy (CEMSE), Ben Nsiah CEO of the Centre for Environmental Management and Sustainable Energy (CEMSE), Ben Nsiah

The Chief Executive of the Centre for Environmental Management and Sustainable Energy (CEMSE), Ben Nsiah, has disclosed that Ghana is likely to experience a drop in fuel prices starting in May this year.

He projected that petrol and diesel could fall to GH¢13 per litre, while Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) may drop to GH¢14 per kilogram.

His projection follows a recent decline in Brent crude prices on the international market.

On Sunday, April 6, 2025, crude oil fell below US$60 for the first time since 2021, a development linked to import tariffs imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump on certain countries.

By Tuesday, April 7, 2025, Brent crude had dropped further, dipping below US$57 amid escalating trade war tensions.

In an exclusive interview with GhanaWeb Business, Nsiah stated that the consistent drop in Brent crude prices comes at an opportune time, as the Ghanaian government is actively exploring ways to reduce fuel costs.

He explained that this significant drop in crude oil prices could help ease fuel costs at the pump, ultimately cushioning consumers.

“Crude oil dropping to its lowest in five years will have three key impacts. The first is that petroleum users will benefit in the coming pricing windows, particularly if the cedi remains stable or appreciates slightly against the dollar. Prices are likely to decline further in May and June, potentially reaching around GH¢13–14 per litre for petrol and diesel, and around GH¢14 per kilogram for LPG,” he said.

Nsiah also noted that the fall in crude prices may lead to a marginal drop in inflation in the coming months.

“We are likely to record lower inflation soon due to this decline in international crude prices,” he added.

Bawku Conflict: Otumfuo-led mediation to resume next week – Mahama

0

By Iddi Yire

Accra, April 11, GNA – The Otumfuo-led peace mediation as part of efforts to address the Bawku conflict will resume next week, President John Dramani Mahama, has disclosed.

The President made the disclosure in his address at the graduation of the Regular Career Course 63 of the Ghana Military Academy at Teshie, near Accra.

“The Ghana Armed Forces is engaged in several threats in several theaters to maintain peace and security in our nation. One major flashpoint continues to be the Bawku area. Only two days ago, an incident in a marketplace triggered an unfortunate loss of lives and criminal vandalism of property,” he stated.

“I wish to emphasize that nobody gains from this situation of conflict and insecurity.

“We have triggered the Otumfuo mediation process, which saw all stakeholders participate in discussions in Kumasi on a roadmap towards peace. I am assured by the Asantehene that the process will resume next week when he returns from his brief visit abroad.”

The President congratulated the Armed Forces for the sacrifices they had made, even at the peril of their lives, to protect life and property in the Bawku conflict area.

“We need the cooperation of all to restore peace in Bawku and its environment, and I entreat all sides to embrace peace as we dialogue to resolve this age-old dispute.”

President Mahama said plans for the expansion of the Ghana Armed Forces to ensure increased capacity to counter both internal and external threats were initiated while he was in office in his previous term.

“During this period, we supervised the acquisition of air, land, and sea assets to equip the Armed Forces to fulfill their mandate of keeping our nation safe,” President Mahama said.

“In resetting our nation to build the Ghana we want; my government will aggressively pursue the ideas of operational and combat readiness of the Ghana Armed Forces. We will resource the Ghana Armed Forces.”

This, he said, means better equipment, including more simulators, advanced training, and the ability to mobilize swiftly in times of need.

The President assured the Ghana Armed Forces that the Government would equip them to excel in their duties.

He said the Government shall assess the retooling initiative and facilitate cost-effective outcomes to equip their army to the standards required for a 21st century defence force.

“As we reveal in the significant achievements of our young Regular Career Course 63 Graduates, who are ready to secure Ghana’s peace and sovereignty, we must also reflect on Ghana’s illustrious legacy in international peacekeeping,” he said.

“We pride ourselves in our nation’s commitment to global peace and security. Indeed, this has not been a recent endeavor.”

Northern Ghana farmers demand action on delayed govt support

0

Peasant farmers across the five northern regions have expressed frustration over the government’s delayed support for those affected by last year’s prolonged dry spell.

Despite having their data collected, many claim they have yet to receive any assistance. They are appealing to the government to fulfill its promise, as many continue to struggle to feed their families.

These concerns were raised during a stakeholder engagement organized by ActionAid Ghana and Songtaba to assess the impact of the dry spell and discuss possible solutions.

The effects of climate change were deeply felt in northern Ghana last year, particularly by farmers. While climate change may seem like a distant issue to some, its devastating impact was a harsh reality for many.

Farmers endured extended periods without rain, leading to significant losses in productivity. Many crops withered due to the severe dry spell, raising fears of potential food shortages, as the North is considered Ghana’s food basket.

In response, the government pledged to assist affected farmers and collected their data. However, nearly five months later, many farmers claim they have received no support.

With the new farming season approaching, ActionAid Ghana and Songtaba, organizations working closely with farmer groups in the North, convened a stakeholder engagement to reassess the situation.

Speaking at the event, Mumuni Halia, a focal person for ActionAid Ghana, expressed concern over the impact of climate change on farmers and discussed possible mitigation measures.

“One of the most pressing issues affecting Ghana’s agricultural system is the threat of climate change, which is negatively impacting our farmers.”

She highlighted the challenges faced by peasant farmers, particularly women smallholder farmers, who struggle to access fertile land. Despite government intervention, many women farmers have not received the promised support.

She noted that women are often marginalized when it comes to agricultural assistance.

“From our engagement here, it’s clear that the promise the government made to support farmers affected by the drought spell has not been fulfilled. Most of the farmers have not received it, even though data was collected. We want to appeal to the government to ensure the right people receive the support to enable them to recover; otherwise, there could be serious consequences.”

Halia urged the government to ensure that women farmers are included in the distribution of support.

“We are calling on the government to, as a matter of urgency, ensure fairness in the distribution to include women smallholder farmers. Our women are usually marginalized.”

Regarding improved seeds, she stressed the importance of preserving indigenous seed varieties and called for research to enhance local seed quality rather than replacing them entirely.

“Another critical area we recommend is the protection of our indigenous seeds from extinction. However, we are not oblivious to the important role research and development from agricultural institutions can play in this. We want to preserve our indigenous seeds. What are we supposed to do to modify them so that they become climate-resilient?”

Some peasant farmers also shared their concerns with Channel One. Madam Awulatu, a smallholder farmer, spoke about her frustrations.

“The drought affected us so much as women smallholder farmers. When it happened, farmers lost everything, and women smallholder farmers were the most affected because we take microloans and repay them after harvesting. But due to the drought, we were not able to pay our loans. We are calling on the government to introduce policies that would include women smallholder farmers. Women are mostly left out in government policies, and we are appealing for government intervention.”

She acknowledged that the government had indeed promised support, and aid was made available. However, after the December elections, the supplies fell into the wrong hands.

In many districts, relief items were stored in warehouses, supposedly for distribution after the elections. Unfortunately, after the polls, political party foot soldiers looted the supplies, leaving affected farmers with nothing.

Channel One previously reported on similar incidents in Bimbilla, where supporters of both the NPP and NDC allegedly took the aid meant for farmers. This pattern was observed across several districts in the North.

‘We need collective engagement’ – AGI Boss urges national unity as U.S. tariffs threaten economy

0

President of the Association of Ghana Industries (AGI) has called for a united national front in response to the 10% tariff imposed by the United States on Ghanaian exports.

Dr. Humphrey Ayim-Darke stressed that this is no time for isolated or reactionary decisions but for “collective engagement” involving government, industry, and regional partners.

Speaking on Joy News’ PM Express Business Edition on Thursday, April 10, he stated the need for Ghana to respond strategically, rather than emotionally, to the unfolding development, which threatens to undermine the country’s already fragile export earnings and fiscal stability.

“We don’t have to be issuing statements that might bring ripples into the system,” he cautioned. “It is still an unfolding event—we are studying it and the dynamism it comes with.”

While a 90-day pause in implementing the new U.S. tariff regime has provided some breathing room, the AGI president stressed that this window must be used wisely.

“But for the 90-day pause, we would have been in a higher anxiety. But for now, we are taking the opportunity to consult—engaging government and our counterparts.”

In this regard, he called for a holistic national approach.

“It will be useful if the country does some form of collective engagement. We need collective engagement,” he said, underscoring that the consequences of inaction or disjointed responses could ripple across sectors, from trade to inflation to monetary policy.

Dr. Ayim-Darke did not mince words about what’s at stake.

“The Finance Minister knows that if he doesn’t get it right, he’ll have a tough time balancing his books, getting his revenue, getting domestic revenue, which is largely based upon imports,” he said.

“Significantly, about 50% of domestic revenue comes from the ports, and these are largely imports, and then from exports as well, which are from the cocoa.”

But the cocoa sector has already taken hits.

“Unfortunately, we know we had a cocoa drop by virtue of the events of the galamsey and the cocoa export,” he said.

“Leave that of the crude oil aside.”

Dr. Ayim-Darke warned that if the government fails to stabilise export markets like cocoa, the ripple effects will touch every aspect of Ghana’s economy.

“Are you worried about the uncertainty and the impact on fiscal and revenue as well? Oh yes, because it has a ripple effect,” he said.

“If you’re not getting enough domestic build, you slap more monetary policies on us, and it will trigger the policy rate, lending rates. And the cycle continues—and it has a consequential effect on the U.S. dollar as well, which is a medium of trading.”

He also expressed concern about disparities in how Ghana and its West African neighbor, Côte d’Ivoire, are being treated under the U.S. tariff regime.

“That is why we are also concerned about the disparity between the tariffs on Ghana and Ivory Coast,” he said.

“We are together seeking to harmonize our total cocoa export and the benefits to the farmers. Now, within 10, they are being 14.”

This, he warned, could create long-term trade distortions.

“So what will be the impact on our trade? When we think that, oh, we have a 10%—it’s good for us? Look, once today you are happy, the next time, it will all catch up with you.”

Dr. Ayim-Darke also raised alarms about the indirect effects of the tariffs, including potential inflation in the United States and its knock-on effect on remittances to Ghana.

“Remittances have become part of our inflows,” he noted.

“If the inflationary rate hits the U.S. by virtue of the tariffs on cocoa or chocolate or other products, and the consumers’ disposable income is reduced, how much remittances will come to your family? And that will affect government too.”

His conclusion was clear: Ghana cannot afford to look at this crisis in isolation. “You cannot look at this in isolation,” he warned.

“We need to be concerned with looking at the macro picture and the micro picture.”

Drama at MCE nominee confirmation exercise in Ketu South

0

By Ewoenam Kpodo

Tokor (VR), April 11, GNA – The exercise to confirm the President’s Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) nominee for Ketu South, Mr Nicholas Kwabla Worclachie turned dramatic Friday, April 11, delaying the process for hours.

The event, scheduled to begin at 1000hours was undecided even after midday due to a misunderstanding that led to a walk-out of some Assembly members.

This was occasioned by first, the absence of a Presiding Member (PM) of the Assembly due to the revocation of all former government appointees of the Assembly, which affected Mr Richmond Koffie Hato, who was also the PM, necessitating the election of a new PM to oversee the MCE confirmation.

Some sources told Ghana News Agency that the election of the PM was supposed to have been held on Monday, April 07 but a decision was made to hold it together with the MCE confirmation event.

While the Municipal Electoral Commission (EC) officials were set for the conduct of the election of the PM, to set the stage for the main event, the MCE confirmation, some Assembly members had an issue with where the ballot screen was placed and requested for it to be changed.

This, Mr Kofi Sakyi Boampong, Municipal Electoral Officer disagreed with saying, placement of the ballot screen was the preserve of the EC officials and not subject to the dictate of the Assembly members.

The Assembly members, unhappy with the stance of Mr Boampong, demanded that he should retract that statement and cooperate with them for a smooth process.

Even though the location of the ballot screen was later changed to suit the members, some of them still staged a walk-out because their second demand of retraction of the statement was not meant.

Following consultations, the Assembly members returned to the hall and the Municipal Electoral Officer withdrew his earlier statement to put the matter finally to rest.

The process for the election of the PM then started around 1135hours involving two nominees, Mr Richard Seyram Nyavi and Mr David Kwabla Kugbe.

As at 1224hours when the results were declared, Mr Nyavi polled 28 and his contender, polled 23, with rejected ballots being 4, implying, no winner at the first attempt.

The General Assembly went on break to determine whether to opt for a re-election or adjourn the PM election to be conducted within the next 10 days.

The members reconvened around 1250 hours after which Mr Kugbe announced his withdrawal from the race and a throw of support behind his contender.

The Assembly members then resolved to have Mr Nyavi as the PM and as such, he was declared as PM-elect by popular acclamation.

The accident scene

A Hyundai Aero Town bus belonging to Palmer International School at Patasi in the Kumasi Metropolis has claimed two lives, with one critically injured when the driver lost control and crashed into a storey building.

The deceased, identified as Maame Serwaa, 74, and one Alfred in his early 50s, died on the spot, while the other victim who sustained various degrees of injuries was identified as Wofa.

According to an eyewitness account, the incident occurred on Monday, April 7, 2025, at about 5pm when the driver of the vehicle dropped off some students of the school.

A tenant of one of the houses where the accident occurred revealed that the two, who are now deceased, were discussing a plumbing work in the nearby house, after Maame Serwaa invited Alfred over to check the plumbing work at her bathroom.

“While the two (deceased) were discussing about the estimate to the cost of the said plumbing work, the vehicle which was at top speed crashed and ran over them,” she narrated, adding that the driver of the vehicle, after the incident, came out from the vehicle and informed them that the breaks had failed, which led to the accident.

The eyewitness also reported that it took the intervention of the police and personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) to remove the victims from the trapped vehicle.

The incident, she disclosed, had destroyed lots of properties, sending shockwaves through the neighbours in the area.

The victim who sustained injury was sent to Suntreso Government Hospital for treatment, while the deceased were conveyed to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) morgue for preservation and autopsy.

Meanwhile, police at Suntreso District have commenced investigations into the matter and arrested the driver of the bus to help in investigations.

LEKMA authorities silent on illegal Beirut Café edifice

0

Management of Ledzokuku Municipal Assembly in the Greater Accra Region have refused to work on resolving and bringing an end to an illegal activity that have been transpiring in the vicinity of Regimanuel and Manet estates which have brought an end to once peaceful and serene environment residents enjoy in the past four decades.

The unauthorized establishment of Beirut Café, a coffee shop allegedly operated by people of ‘Middle Eastern origins’ which has trespassed on public land, and also disrupted the peace of the gated community has proven not to be of serious concern to the Ledzokuku Municipal Assembly.

The illegal edifice which is located in the Assembly’s area of supervision has been of no concern by the Assembly heads to help bring an end to the activities of Beirut Café which has attracted an influx of commercial motorcyclists, commonly known as okada riders, as well as sex workers, creating an atmosphere that is both unsafe and unsuitable for the community.

When the Assembly heads were approached by journalists after several complains by homeowners of both Regimanuel and Manet Estates, many of whom are retired professionals on what has been done to bring an end to the illegal operation of the Beirut Café, they refused to speak with the narration that, they are working on it, something they have refused to do from beginning of the year.

Madam Gladys – who is the head of physical planning at the LEKMA Assembly told journalists, the Assembly is not ready to speak on the issue.

Her further explanation centered on the fact that an order from above had instructed her not to speak on the issue. When she was pushed further with the question that, when will the gated community have their freedoms back, bringing an end to the criminal activities ongoing in the area, she said boldly, “I have been told not to speak so don’t push me”.

Her refusal to speak on such a sensitive issue, raises urgency by state workers to work diligently in addressing matters of pressing concern by residents who by all understanding don’t deserve such illegal edifice near them which has caused a distain on their over four decades of living in such neighborhood.

When she was made to understand that, the residents are typical Ghanaians in their soil land, which no foreigner, and specifically, no ‘middle east origin’ has no legal and moral rights to distract their peace and security, her urgency in the response was low and something that can break an individual to its lowest moment.

“Gentleman, Mr Journalist, you’re still pushing me to speak which I’ve already indicated to you that, order from above says I should not speak” she indicated.

Meanwhile recent official letter written to the Municipal Coordinating Director of the Ledzokuku Municipal Assembly – specifically MS. RHODALINE ADWOA CONDUAH reads, “we write on the instructions of our client (RGEA Homeowners’ Association) and refer to the above subject matter, our client’s letters to you dated 16th January 2025 and 24th January 2025 and your reply dated 20th January 2025.

“Our client informs us that by letter to you dated 16th January 2025, it expressed dissatisfaction regarding the operation of a coffee shop (Beirut Coffee Shop), which had been recently constructed at the confluence of the Palace/LeKMA highway and Emmanuel highway. According to the complaint lodged with you, the use of the pavement and the shoulder of the road as a parking space by the shop’s patrons has caused an obstruction to the free flow of traffic, poses a danger to other motorists as well as pedestrians and has the tendency to breed crime at the junction as well as the nearby neighbourhood. Additionally, it has resulted in the establishment of an informal station by commercial motorbike operators, thereby causing a nuisance and inconvenience to our client.

“We are further informed by our client that in your reply dated 20th January 2025, an invitation was extended to them by your outfit for a meeting which took place on Thursday 23rd January 2025. According to our client, it was during this meeting that LeKMA stated that it had not granted a permit for the construction of the coffee shop at the junction as required by your bye-laws, and The Gosnen, No.l 0 Adomi Link (formerly 3rd Close), off Volta Street Airport, Residential Area, Accra, you then assured our client that the municipal will take the necessary measures to address the concerns raised.

“Our client is not satisfied with the outcome of the situation because as stated above, the continuous operation of the coffee shop poses a danger not only to motorists but also pedestrians and has the tendency to breed crime at the junction. It has also come to our notice that no scoping notice was issued regarding the construction of the coffee shop, again as required by law, and the coffee shop appears to have been built on the road reservation, also contrary to the law.

“We have the instructions of our client to DEMAND, and we do hereby DEMAND that the municipal should take immediate steps to abate the nuisance by causing the coffee shop to cease its operations forthwith, and the shop dismantled and towed away. Our client reserves all its rights in law. Yours faithfully,

Another letter addressed to the Director General of the National Road and Safety Authority also reads, “we write on behalf of the RGEA Homeowners’ Association, representing approximately six hundred (600) Homeowners within the Regimanuel Gray Estates along Spintex Road. We bring to your urgent attention a pressing road safety issue that requires immediate intervention.

“Recently, a roundabout was constructed at the intersection of the Palace/LEKMA Highway and Emmanuel Highway to improve traffic flow and safety. However, soon after its completion, a private entity established a coffee shop (Beirut Coffee Shop) on what is effectively the road reservation. This unauthorized construction has significantly disrupted traffic movement and created hazardous conditions for both motorists and pedestrians.

Key concerns include:

Traffic Obstruction – The location of the coffee shop impedes smooth vehicular movement, leading to congestion and confusion at the roundabout.

Safety Hazard – Pedestrians navigating the area are at risk due to the lack of proper walkways and the obstruction caused by the coffee shop.

Lack of Parking Facilities – Customers visiting the establishment park haphazardly along the roadside, worsening traffic flow and increasing accident risks.

Non-Compliance with Regulations – The local authority, Ledzekuku Krowor Municipal Assembly (LeKMA), has confirmed that no permit was granted for the construction of this coffee shop, and it does not conform to the approved layout of the area.

5 Numerous Accidents Recorded – There have been several accidents recorded on this stretch of road due to the obstruction and confusion caused by the unauthorized coffee shop, further emphasizing the urgency of addressing this issue.

“Given these concerns, we respectfully urge the National Road and Safety Authority to take immediate action to rectify the situation before it results in avoidable accidents and further road congestion.”

Jamaican dancehall musician, Vybz Kartel, has shared the story of how he met his current Turkish girlfriend, Sidem Öztürk, on Instagram while serving his prison sentence.

In a discussion on Hot 97 on April 10, 2025, Vybz Kartel explained that he came across his girlfriend’s profile while scrolling through the comments section of a post he made.

He revealed that at the time, he was facing relationship issues with his baby mama.

“Yeah, I met her on July 25, 2015, and I’ll never forget it. In prison, I was very active on Instagram because, you know, you have time. I was going through my comment section and saw this girl who always liked my pictures, so out of curiosity, I went onto her page… At that time, I was also going through a lot with my baby mama,” he shared.

Vybz Kartel went on to explain that Sidem confessed she had been looking for him but, due to the prevalence of fake Vybz Kartel pages, she initially found him through his baby mama’s account.

“She confessed that she was actually looking for me, but because there were a lot of fake Vybz Kartel pages, she jumped onto my baby mama’s page, and that was how she found me,” he said.

“She’s at my hotel right now with my mother. We’re getting married this year. I need some Turkish children who will talk to me and I won’t understand,” he added.

‘Stop crying wolf when there’s no wolf’ – President Mahama jabs Ntim Fordjour?

MP Rev John Ntim Fordjour (L) and President John Dramani Mahama play videoMP Rev John Ntim Fordjour (L) and President John Dramani Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama appears to have taken a swipe at the Member of Parliament for Assin South, Rev John Ntim Fordjour, over the latter’s recent allegation of cocaine smuggling and money laundering by two planes at the Kotoka International Airport (KIA).

Speaking at the 2025 Graduation Ceremony of the Ghana Military Academy on Friday, April 11, 2025, the Commander-in-Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces indicated that while Ghanaians are encouraged to share information with security agencies, what they share must be credible.

He urged that people should not make unfounded national security claims since it distracts the security services in the performance of their duties.

“The complementary roles of individuals, organisations and the government in national security is of critical importance. I urge our citizens, in discharging this complementary duty of helping to safeguard our nation, not to behave like the shepherd boy in the famous fable who cried ‘wolf, wolf’ when there was no wolf.

“If we behave like that boy either for partisan or parochial interest, we distract the attention of our security services from focusing on their critical job of keeping us safe,” he said.

He added, “Let us support our security services and the Ghana Armed Forces with information that is useful and intelligence that is helpful, that will advance their work rather than retrogress it. Let me reiterate that we will take all allegations of crime seriously and trigger our security service investigative machinery to go after criminals no matter who they are. But let me state emphatically also that we do not have the resources and time to engage in any game of smoke and mirrors.”

President Mahama also condemned the recent clashes in Bawku in the Upper East Region that led to at least one person dying and the destruction of several properties.

He said that the mediation into the Bawku conflict, which is being led by the Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, will recommence soon to help resolve the conflict.

“The Ghana Armed Forces is engaged in several threats in several theatres to maintain peace and security in our nation. One major flashpoint continues to be the Bawku area. Only two days ago, an incident in a marketplace triggered an unfortunate loss of lives and criminal vandalism of property.

“I wish to emphasise that nobody gains from this situation of conflict and insecurity. We have triggered the Otumfuo mediation process, which saw all stakeholders participate in discussions in Kumasi on a roadmap towards peace. I’m assured by the Asantehene that the process will resume next when he returns from his brief visit abroad,” he said.

Even though President Mahama did not categorically mention Rev Ntim Fordjour’s name during his remarks, the MP has been in the news for the allegations he made.

The Assin South MP, who is also the Minority’s Ranking Member on the Defence and Interior Committee, claimed at a press conference on April 1, 2025, that two flights, an air ambulance and a private jet, might have been involved in drug trafficking or money laundering.

He alleged that one of the aircraft, AirMED Flight N823AM, landed in Ghana on March 20 and stayed for five days without any record of transporting a patient.

These allegations led President John Dramani Mahama to order security agencies to “immediately and fully collaborate with the honourable Member of Parliament so he provides all necessary information to investigate the allegations and take all action necessary to expose any drug dealing.”

“As Ghana grapples with the environmental consequences of electronic waste, we have to strive and prove that innovation and sustainability can go hand in hand,” Teye said.

How Dr. Bawumia changed the conversation about Gold in Ghana

0

Ghana, since its pre-independence days, has been globally renowned for its richness in the precious mineral, gold.

The country was once known as the Gold Coast before it was renamed Ghana — a clear reflection of how rich this land was, and still is, in gold.

For decades, however, the conversation around Ghana’s gold largely focused on mining and exporting — a cycle which has long been one of the nation’s biggest sources of foreign exchange.

But with global economic dynamics disrupted by unprecedented crises, nations began to think outside the box in response to depreciating local currencies and the rising cost of living.

In Ghana, a 21st-century leader — then Vice-President of the Republic — proposed an innovative policy in 2022 that would change Ghana’s perspective on its precious mineral forever.

First, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia proposed the Bank of Ghana’s Gold Purchasing Programme, aimed at significantly increasing Ghana’s paltry 8-tonne gold reserves — a programme that laid the foundation for his second impactful proposal: the Gold for Oil initiative.

In the midst of the global economic crisis and the sharp depreciation of local currencies in 2022, Ghana’s Cedi came under severe pressure, as the demand for foreign currency to import goods escalated.

Dr. Bawumia identified the demand for foreign exchange to finance oil imports as a major source of the Cedi’s depreciation. To address the persistent currency depreciation, the rising demand for forex to import oil, and the associated increases in fuel and utility prices, he proposed the Gold for Oil Programme.

Under this programme, Ghana no longer needed to seek foreign currency to pay for oil imports. Instead, gold purchased by the Bank of Ghana was used to settle the cost of oil directly.

As envisioned by Dr. Bawumia, this significantly reduced pressure on the Cedi, curbed its rapid decline, and helped to stabilise fuel prices.

These two remarkable interventions by Dr. Bawumia not only addressed the longstanding challenges of currency depreciation and fuel price volatility, but also fundamentally changed the national conversation around gold.

The truth is, before 2022, no policymaker in Ghana had proposed a gold purchasing initiative to increase reserves, a Gold for Oil Programme, or the use of gold as a tool for currency stabilisation. Today, the NDC government has introduced the Goldbod — building upon the foundational ideas first proposed by Dr. Bawumia.

The question, then, is: after over 65 years of independence, why did Ghanaians suddenly begin focusing on gold as a strategic economic asset?

The answer is simple: it was Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia — the former Vice-President — who awakened Ghana to the critical role gold can play in building reserves and stabilising the exchange rate.

If today’s economic discourse prominently features the role of gold in national development, it is because of Dr. Bawumia’s defining and forward-thinking policy proposals. He deserves commendation for reshaping how Ghana views and uses one of its most valuable natural resources.

In the video below from 2022, Dr. Bawumia explains his thinking on how Ghana can use gold to support the economy.

Ghana faces $500m revenue loss if it pursues local lithium refining – Report

0

According to the research, a domestically operated refinery—whether publicly or privately managed—would only be financially viable if it procures lithium concentrate at prices well below the international market rate. Such a move could significantly reduce revenue streams from taxes, royalties, and dividends associated with Ghana’s existing lithium mining projects.

The NRGI study modelled two key scenarios: exporting raw lithium spodumene concentrate and refining it within Ghana. The results revealed a stark difference. Exporting lithium concentrate—particularly to established Chinese refineries—offers far greater returns for the state.

In a mid-range pricing forecast, local refining could slash government earnings from $2.7 billion to $2.2 billion. Over a 20-year horizon, the estimated revenue loss could exceed $300 million, driven by high capital expenditure, limited supply, and a lack of technical know-how in lithium processing.

China currently processes over 90% of the world’s lithium, leveraging massive economies of scale, low input costs, and government subsidies. The NRGI highlights that most new refinery projects outside China, including those in Australia and Europe, have either stalled or been abandoned due to similar cost-related challenges.

Given the financial implications, the NRGI recommends that Ghana pursue a “mine-and-monitor” strategy—commencing lithium extraction at the Ewoyaa site while keeping an eye on international refining developments. The think tank advises against committing public investment to a potentially loss-making refinery until more favourable conditions emerge.

Although calls for domestic value addition remain strong, the report urges Ghanaian policymakers to carefully consider the economic trade-offs. Notably, the projected $500 million shortfall exceeds the country’s 2024 budget allocation for basic education.

“The desire for value addition is valid, but it must be economically sustainable,” the report concludes.

PSG plotting sensational swoop for Mohammed Kudus

Mohammed Kudus is a player of West Ham Mohammed Kudus is a player of West Ham

According to Africa Foot, French giants Paris Saint Germain have opened talks for West Ham and Ghana star Mohammed Kudus as they aim to strengthen their attacking options.

The Parisians are on course for one of their best seasons. Following a 3-1 victory over Aston Villa on Wednesday, April 9, 2025, they are set to reach the semi-finals of the Champions League.

However, head coach Luis Enrique is already planning for the 2025/26 season by including Kudus to his squad.

Since joining West Ham in 2023, the midfielder has impressed with his performances, attracting interest from several potential suitors eager to secure his signature.

According to multiple reports, Kudus is valued at €85m by West Ham, meaning PSG would need substantial effort and resources to bring him to the Parc des Princes.

The 24-year-old has endured a challenging season but has still managed to score three goals and provide two assists in the Premier League.

The Ghanaian international is also being monitored by Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City, Tottenham, and Saudi Arabian giants Al Nassr.
