“Diamond Platnumz is richer than Davido, Wizkid and Burna Boy combined” – Deeone

0

Reality star, Deeone opines that the Tanzanian singer, Diamond Platnumz is richer than Davido, Wizkid and Burna Boy.

This comes following the singer’s appearance in Nigeria for the wedding of his friend and colleague, Juma Jux, in Lagos.

He was seen gifting $100 notes to various folks he encountered while in the country.

Politics is not dirty; it is service – Rev. Dr. Opuni-Frimpong calls for increased church involvement

0

Senior Lecturer at the Department of Religion and Human Development at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology(KNUST) Rev. Dr. Kwabena Opuni-Frimpong, has called on Ghanaians particularly the youth and the Christian community to rethink the perception that politics is a dirty game.

He maintains that politics, in its true form, is not dirty but a platform for service and leadership.

Stop Politicising Bawku Conflict, Says Chief Imam

0

National Chief Imam, Sheikh Osman Nuhu Sharubutu

The National Chief Imam, Sheikh Osman Nuhu Sharubutu, has urged all Ghanaians to avoid the politicisation of the Bawku conflict and to participate in the national efforts at finding an amicable solution to it.

To the media, he asked that they remain ethical, peace-loving, reconciliatory, and unifying in their reportage on and analysis of the conflict. Jaundiced analyses that have the potential to inflame passions should be avoided, he emphasised in a statement signed by his Personal Assistant, Dr. Mohammed Marzuq Abubakari Azindoo.

The revered Mufti has instructed all Imams in the country to dedicate portions of their Friday Sermons to and offer special prayers for peace in Bawku in the next few weeks.

His reaction comes in the wake of the recent escalation of tension and heightened violence in Bawku.

He called for de-escalation, reconciliation, and unification in the Bawku Traditional Area irrespective of the ethnic, religious, and political affiliations of the people.

He expressed concern about the recent resurgence of violence, expressing concern especially about the arson attack on a police station and the killing of peacekeeping                                    personnel in Bawku.

He condemned what in his own words was a show of disgusting impunity, including “the brazen shooting at the vehicle of the Inspector General of Police (IGP) by some irate youth in Bawku”. The action, he went on, “is an assault on the authority of the state, a misbehaviour that is NOT entertained in civilised democratic societies”.

The Islamic spiritual leader has, in the light of the development, appealed to the factions in the conflict to silence the guns and allow the restoration of normalcy to the area.

He commended the government for referring the dispute to the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II for mediation.

The Grand Imam, however, expressed his readiness to engage in behind-the-scenes diplomacy, if the need arises, to enhance the quality of the mediation process.

In the wisdom of His Eminence, decent democratic politics is a virtue. “But when a matter of national security implications is subjected to needless partisan politicisation, it can easily become a tribute to violence entrepreneurs,” he cautioned.

Disregard Fake Quotes From Oquaye Report

0

Justin Kodua Frimpong

The General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Kodua Frimpong, has denied that portions of the Mike Oquaye Report has been released to the public.

His reaction follows recent allegations of so-called portions of the Prof. Mike Oquaye Report being released via social media.

In a swift reaction, he said that “I wish to state emphatically that the NPP has not disclosed nor released any portion of the Prof. Oquaye’s Committee Report to anybody, not even to any officially recognised organ of the Party. For the avoidance of doubt, only ONE COPY of the Report was prepared, and this copy was what was submitted to the National Council through the National Chairman and General Secretary.”

The Party, he said, “is still studying the contents of the Committee’s Report. If after studying the entire content of the Report, the Party deems it necessary to disclose aspects of the Report that are worthy of disclosure, the same will be done having regard to the best interest of the Party.”

Until that is done and duly communicated, he pointed out “any statement in circulation including so-called direct quotes purporting to be taken from the Report including assigned page numbers can only be the handiwork of political opponents of the NPP intended to achieve mischievous ends at the expense of the Party.”

All such quotes, he stated, are “therefore, totally FAKE and should be completely DISREGARDED. It is thus not surprising that the originators and circulators of these mischievous statements/quotes are members or activists of the NDC,” adding that “their strategy will not detract us from focusing on rebuilding our Party to recapture power in 2028 and beyond.”

In a related development, Rita Talata Asobayire (2nd Vice Chairperson of the NPP) has reacted to a statement on social media “purported to be a direct quotation coming from me and said to have been captured on Page 66 of the Oquaye Committee Report. The statement alleged that I had told the Oquaye Committee that our General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong ‘came across as an armchair leader – uninspiring and seemingly unable to keep Appointees accountable’.”

The foregone, she said, “are complete fabrication by whoever may have authored it for political mischief. As a matter of fact, I have NOT interacted with the Oquaye Committee and have NOT made any appearance before the Committee. I was actually NOT in the jurisdiction at the time the Committee met with the National Executives, and this fact was duly communicated to the Committee.”

She added that she is aware the NPP has not released any portion of the report to anybody.

Afeyeme/Afiadenyigba celebrate maiden Dunenyo family reunion and homecoming summit

By Michael Foli Jackidy

Dzodze (V/R), April 22, GNA – The chiefs and people of Dzodze-Afeyeme and Afiadenyigba in the Ketu North Municipality of the Volta Region, have held their inaugural Dunenyo Family Reunion and Homecoming Summit.

It is aimed at fostering peace, unity, and collaborative development among the two historically connected communities.

The event, held at Afeyeme was also used to launch a major fundraising campaign to support the construction of a modern community centre.

The celebration took place under the theme: “Bringing the Community Together in the Interest of Peace, Unity, and Cultural Heritage”.

Togbui Akpabi VI, the Dufia of Afeyeme, in an address, emphasised the importance of the occasion, describing it as a significant step toward reconciliation, reconnection, and community transformation.

“This celebration is more than just a gathering. It is a symbol of our shared heritage, our unity of purpose, and our collective resolve to build a brighter future together,” he said.

He announced that the proposed community centre, which will cost GHS 500,000, would serve as a hub for traditional council meetings, youth development programs, cultural activities, and community engagements.

Togbui Akpabi also highlighted the common ancestry of Afeyeme and Afiadenyigba, tracing their shared roots, migration history, and cultural practices that once bound the two communities closely together-from marriage customs and burial rites.

“Our forebears lived as one, guided by mutual respect and shared values. Sadly, over time, some of that unity has faded, but today marks the beginning of its restoration,” adding that this was not just a festival but a movement to rekindle their identity and commitment to one another.

He called on the people, both at home and in the diaspora, to come together with renewed dedication, love, and a shared vision for the future.

Mr Eric Edem Agbana, the Member of Parliament for Ketu North, commended the two communities for coming together in unity.

He stressed that peace and unity remain the foundation for any meaningful development.

Mr Martin Amenaki, the Municipal Chief Executive, also pledged his full support for the initiative, encouraging the communities to maintain the spirit of cooperation and promised to back efforts aimed at enhancing local development.

The event brought together traditional leaders, Queen mothers, government officials, community members, and dignitaries from near and far, who echoed the need to preserve cultural heritage while building a united and prosperous future.

Ghanaian musician Black Sherif has revealed that if he hadn’t pursued a career in music, he would likely be selling clothes in Accra or working in his father’s spare parts business.

Speaking in an interview on the Afro Select Show, the “Second Sermon” hitmaker revealed, “If I wasn’t doing music right now, I would probably be hustling crazy, doing clothes stuff in Accra or maybe if I wasn’t in Accra I would be selling my daddy’s tyres in Konongo.

“My dad sells spare engines, spare parts and those stuff, that’s a family business,” he stated.

Black Sherif also reflected on his senior high school days in Kumasi, revealing that despite being a boarding student, he often sneaked out of school to engage in activities such as gambling and dancing, particularly around the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).

“Back in high school, I didn’t really like to stay in school. I used to sneak out to go dance or gamble in Tech,” he shared with a laugh.

Watch video of supposed devastation of Tano Forest Reserve caused by Wontumi’s Akonta Mining

A screenshot from the video A screenshot from the video

The government has shared a video of supposed illegal mining activities of Akonta Mining Limited, a mining company owned by the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako (Chairman Wontumi), in the Tano Nimiri Forest Reserve.

This video was what led to the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, weeping at a press conference on Monday, April 22, 2025.

The minister said that anytime he watches the video, he is shocked at the extent of damage a Ghanaian would do to Ghana’s forest just in the name of making money.

The said video showed vast portions of the Tano Nimiri Forest Reserve in the Western Region completely destroyed.

Huge trenches, some filled with muddy water, could be seen all over the forest.

The video also showed excavators at work, pulling down trees and digging more trenches in the forest.

Scores of people could also be seen working in the forest. Some could be seen processing mineral ore, while others were working in a very large trench.

The video also showed how the illegal mining activities in the forest were polluting the Tano River, which is the source of water for communities near the river.

Gold Fields has not initiated legal action against government over Damang Mine lease

0

An earlier report by GhanaWeb indicated that the Africa Centre for Energy Policy (ACEP) had suggested that Gold Fields has initiated legal action against the Government of Ghana following the expiration of its mining lease for the Damang Mine in the Western Region.

We wish to clarify that this statement is inaccurate. Gold Fields has not sued the Government of Ghana over the Damang lease, as previously suggested.

This clarification comes in response to statements attributed to ACEP, which implied that Gold Fields may have resorted to legal action following the government’s decision not to renew the Damang Mine lease.

We also wish to emphasise that, while Gold Fields has acknowledged ongoing discussions with the appropriate government agencies concerning the future of the Damang operation, no legal action has been initiated.

Meanwhile, the government, through the Minerals Commission, has confirmed the termination of Gold Fields’ Damang Mine lease, which officially expired on April 18, 2025.

Some industry experts have suggested that the Damang Mine, which has experienced declining output in recent years, may be central to broader strategic decisions surrounding Ghana’s natural resource management.

Gold Fields, a South African-based multinational, has operated in Ghana for decades and also owns the Tarkwa Mine, one of the largest gold producers in the country.

The company maintains that it remains committed to sustainable mining and community development in the region.

New HIV infections spreading ‘like wildfire’ in Berekum Municipality

File photo

New HIV infections are fast spreading in the Berekum Municipality of the Bono Region, recording the highest HIV and AIDS prevalence of 3.34 per cent, Mark Kyeremeh Oppong, Bono Regional Technical Officer, Monitoring and Evaluation, Ghana Health Service (GHS), has said.

He said the figure as recorded in the 2023 HIV and AIDS sentinel survey of the Ghana AIDS Commission (GAC) was alarming, saying the Bono Region, in general, was recording disturbing figures too.

Oppong called on sexually active young people to abstain from premarital sexual practices and multiple sex partners and urged those who could not control their sexual desires to avoid unprotected sex.

He was speaking at the launch of the “Miss Elegance Tertiary Ghana 2025”, a beauty pageant initiated by the Reproductive Needs and Fitness (RENEF) foundation, a health-centered Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO).

RENEF focuses on reproductive health and promotes gender equality and using the 2025 beauty pageant as a campaign to encourage tertiary students to voluntarily check their HIV and AIDS status and to help bring the rising cases under control.

Oppong regretted that the Bono Region had three consecutive years led in the HIV and High prevalence rates in the country, saying the rate of HIV infections was spreading in the region, requiring urgent research to ascertain the causes of the spread.

Abigail Antwi-Baafi, the Chief Executive Officer of the RENEF, said the foundation was using the beauty pageant to intensify the “Know your HIV status” campaign, especially for tertiary students to test and know their HIV and AIDS status.

“We aim at tackling health and social needs through entertainment,” she stated, and the campaign was also aimed at augmenting the agenda “95-95-95” of the GAC, she stated.

The United Nations Joint Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) has set ambitious treatment targets known as Project 95-95-95, aiming to achieve 95 per cent of people living with HIV knowing their status, 95 per cent of diagnosed individuals on antiretroviral therapy (ART), and 95 per cent of those on ART achieving viral suppression.

As part of the campaign, Antwi-Baafi said free condoms would also be distributed to encourage the public to use condoms and protect themselves from new infections of HIV.

All 12 tertiary institutions, comprising Technical Universities and Colleges of Education, are participating in the beauty pageant.

‘I don’t know her’ – Julius Debrah denies influencing NPA Deputy CEO’s appointment

0

Chief of Staff Julius Debrah has denied having any association with Linda Boamah Asante

The Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, has denied any form of association or influence in the continued tenure of the Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the National Petroleum Authority, Linda Boamah Asante.

According to a news article published by mynewsgh.com on Monday, April 21, 2025, Linda Boamah Asante, who was appointed Deputy CEO of the NPA by then-President Akufo-Addo in 2022, remains in her position despite the departure of Perry Okudzeto, with whom she was appointed, following the exit of the Akufo-Addo government.

The report alleged that Linda Boamah Asante, who is closely associated with the now-opposition New Patriotic Party, has maneuvered to retain her role as Director of Inspections, Monitoring, and Health, Safety, and Environment (IM&HSE) at the NPA, with the alleged blessing of Chief of Staff Julius Debrah.

However, in response to the article, the Chief of Staff denied having any contact or association with the Deputy CEO.

“I’ve never met her in my life, neither do I even know her,” the Chief of Staff told GhanaWeb.

Following John Mahama’s assumption of the presidency on January 7, 2025, after the National Democratic Congress (NDC) victory in the December 2024 election, his administration initiated actions leading to the dismissal or cessation of appointments of heads and leaders of various state institutions in Ghana.

Despite criticism from the opposition, some within the government have argued that these actions are legal and align with a historical pattern in Ghanaian politics, where new administrations replace key institutional leaders appointed by their predecessors to align governance with new policy priorities or to consolidate political control.

Shareholders approved all resolutions proposed at Airbus SE’s (stock exchange symbol: AIR) 2025 Annual General Meeting (AGM) held on 15 April in Amsterdam.

Resolutions included the renewal of the Board mandate of Executive Member Guillaume Faury, who continues as Airbus Chief Executive Officer. The mandates of Non-Executive Members Catherine Guillouard and Irene Rummelhoff were also renewed.

Dr. Doris Höpke was appointed as a Non-Executive Member, replacing Claudia Nemat whose Board mandate expired at the close of the AGM and did not seek re-election. Dr. Höpke currently acts as an independent advisor and mediator and brings extensive experience of risk management, human resources, law and conflict resolution.

She is a member of the Supervisory Board of Mercedes-Benz and previously sat on the Board of Management of reinsurer Munich Re.

Airbus Board Members are subject to (re)appointment every year in blocks of four for three years, in order to ensure a smooth transition of the Board’s composition.

By proceeding in this manner, the Company avoids the departure of a large number of Board Members at one single AGM, which would result in a loss of experience and integration challenges for the new Members.

Shareholders also approved the proposed payments of a 2024 gross dividend of € 2.00 per share and a gross special dividend of € 1.00 per share.

11 dead in gory Amanase accident on Accra-Kumasi highway

0

11 persons have been confirmed dead following a gory accident that occurred around 5:00 a.m. on Tuesday, April 22, at Amanase, near Suhum, along the main Accra-Kumasi Highway.

The tragic incident involved a fuel tanker with registration number GR 1300-16 and a Benz Sprinter bus registered GW 6510-23.
Although the exact cause of the accident is yet to be determined, preliminary investigations by the police suggest that the driver of the fuel tanker, who was reportedly dozing off, veered off his lane into the path of the oncoming Sprinter bus.

The head-on collision resulted in the instant death of two females and nine male adults. Several others sustained life-threatening injuries.
Emergency personnel from the Suhum Fire Service and Police were quickly dispatched to the scene. They assisted in both the rescue operations and the management of traffic along the busy stretch.

Confirming the incident, the Suhum Municipal Public Relations Officer of the Ghana National Fire Service, ADO1 Akonnor Opare Ohene Daniel, told journalists that the survivors are currently receiving treatment at the Suhum Government Hospital.
Meanwhile, the Eastern Regional Minister, Rita Akosua Awatey, who expressed sadness over the incident, is on her way to the Suhum Government Hospital to assess the situation.

She is expected to provide the necessary support, including facilitating the transfer of critically injured victims to higher-level health facilities if needed.

Stand Up For The Judiciary

0

Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo

When the National Democratic Congress (NDC) represented by President John Mahama succeeds in removing Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo from office, a bad and dangerous precedence would have been set.

Democracy would have also suffered a major setback. With the plot in full flight, it would seem only a miracle can thwart the President’s desire.

Subsequent governments would take that step of replacing whoever they please to be their Chief Justice (CJ).

We can rightly pose the question as: to what end would this serve? Of course the whims of the President whose resetting agenda is ignoring all decent and acceptable standards within the bounds of democracy and the rule of law.

President Mahama’s efforts against the Chief Justice should be seen in broad terms as it encompasses the soul of democracy.

Where is this going to end? The removal of the CJ is part of a journey to a destination which is anything but in the interest of good governance and the rule of law. Herein lies the cause of our worries.

Anything which seeks to erode the proper functioning of the judiciary is injurious to democracy, and that is why we are worried and genuinely so.

An eroded judiciary is a depleted democracy and so all who prefer the enhancement of good governance to the contrary should stand up now and be counted among the cherishers of democracy and the real sense of an independent judiciary.

Before the Easter holidays, there was a deliberate spreading of news that all is set for the removal of the CJ, a part of the grand scheme. The story on social media was that she had been suspended.

This was followed by news about the establishment of a prima facie case against the lady who the NDC love to hate.

The use of social media in the plot is not surprising, as it is currently the most preferred means of testing the political waters and agenda setting.

For the first time in the history of polls in this country, we have observed a so-called survey to measure the popularity or otherwise of the CJ.

It is as if that position is an electable one. It is not, and the man who has allowed himself to be used as a pawn in the chess of NDC dirty manoeuvres should give us a break.

We have had enough of such tricks. We congratulate him for winning the lotto of the last elections and which makes him feel like a soothsayer whose words have come true.

He is currently doing another project for the NDC, as he embarks upon a so-called determination of the popularity or otherwise of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia among New Patriotic Party (NPP) faithful.

It is easy to tell that this is an NDC project. The results of the latest so-called polls on Dr. Bawumia is out and we find it interesting that it now shows that unlike a previous one, the popularity of the former Vice President is soaring. The guy is up to a trick working on a complex NDC political game.

The appointment of a CJ has never been hinged upon the outcome of polls among Ghanaians and should never be.

Let the President and his team have it as they deem fit regarding the removal of the CJ. Time, however, will tell whether or not their action was done in good spirit or out of political mischief.

Karim Zito mamed Interim Head Coach as Asante Kotoko overhauls technical team

0

Asante Kotoko SC has appointed Abdul Karim Zito as Interim Head Coach and Technical Director, leading a new era in the club’s technical restructuring.

A former player and coach of the club, Zito returns to the Porcupine Warriors with a proven track record at both club and national levels.

The veteran trainer recently guided Dreams FC to a historic CAF Confederation Cup semi-final and famously led Ghana’s U-20 team to the 2021 Africa U-20 Cup of Nations title.

His dual role is expected to bring stability and direction as the club continues its search for a substantive head coach.

Joining him in the reshaped technical setup is Prince Yaw Owusu, who takes up the role of Assistant Coach.

With over two decades of coaching experience across Ghana, Sudan, and the United States, Owusu’s portfolio includes stints with Medeama SC, Inter Allies, and the Ghana U-20 and U-17 national teams.

He is widely recognised for his work in nurturing talents who have progressed to top European clubs like AC Milan, Genoa, Sassuolo, and Fiorentina.

Additionally, former Technical Director Malik Jabir has been named Technical Advisor. In this strategic role, he will offer high-level guidance to support the club’s long-term vision.

Performing arts schools don’t make you a better artiste – Romeo Swag

Fast-rising Ghanaian hip-hop artiste Romeo Tevie, popularly known as Romeo Swag, has stated that performing arts schools in Ghana don’t prepare artistes for global success.

The 2025 TGMA Unsung Artiste nominee and Mentor XIII winner made this statement during an interview on 3FM, where he talked about his artistic journey and his dreams of formal music training.

According to Romeo Swag, he had always wanted to attend a music school to enhance his talent, but he was disheartened by the lack of institutions in Ghana that offer impactful training for young talents.

“I’ve always wanted to attend a music school, but in Ghana, there aren’t any music schools available. The performing arts schools don’t teach you how to become a better artiste,” he stated.

Romeo Swag noted that the few institutions that exist do not equip students with the necessary skills or exposure to thrive in today’s competitive music industry.

When the interviewer asked Romeo Swag about the University of Ghana’s School of Performing Arts, he dismissed its offerings as inadequate for those aiming for international music stardom.

Romeo Swag explained that what is taught in such Ghanaian schools is limited to traditional dance steps, which do not translate into artistry or stagecraft.

“At Legon, they only teach a few Kpanlogo dance steps and similar things, but they don’t provide the guidance needed to develop you into an artiste like Justin Bieber, Michael Jackson, or Burna Boy,” he said.

According to Romeo Swag, what many young artistes need is not just knowledge of dance or music theory, but a holistic approach that includes branding, stage performance, vocal training, and industry mentorship, where he believes reality shows are more effective at delivering.

He emphasised that reality shows provide a platform where upcoming artistes are exposed to industry experts and are also taught the business side of music, branding, and the art of performance.

“From where I sit, reality shows seem to offer that kind of support; they groom you, help you build your brand, and show you the direction you should take,” he concluded.

40 Minutes? Efia Odo Drops Bedroom Bombshell & Lists Deal-Breakers That’ll Make You Think Twice

0

Ghanaian actress and social media siren Efia Odo is known for speaking her mind, and when it comes to romance, she’s not mincing words! In a recent podcast clip that’s got the internet buzzing, Efia laid down the law on what she absolutely will not tolerate in a partner, and let’s just say, some potential suitors might want to take notes (and maybe set a timer!).

Forget subtle hints and coy suggestions – Efia is serving up her relationship expectations with the directness of a perfectly aimed arrow. And right at the top of her “red flag” list? Prepare yourselves, gentlemen… bedroom stamina!

“A guy who only lasts 40 minutes in bed is a red flag,” she declared with the unwavering conviction that has become her trademark. “I need at least an hour or more. The first 10 minutes are just for the build-up!” Boom! There it is. Efia isn’t shy about her desires, setting a clear benchmark for the duration of intimacy that some might find… ambitious. This bold pronouncement has undoubtedly sparked a flurry of reactions, from nods of agreement to raised eyebrows and perhaps a few nervous glances at the clock.

But Efia’s list of deal-breakers doesn’t end in the bedroom. Maturity and independence are also non-negotiable for this outspoken star. According to her, any man still residing in his childhood home past the age of 30 is a definite “no-go zone.”

“I like my space. I want to be able to walk around the house in lingerie or even naked,” she elaborated, painting a picture of comfortable intimacy that’s simply not feasible with parental supervision. “That’s not happening if you’re still living with your mom!” It’s a sentiment that resonates with many who value personal space and a partner who has established their own independent life.

Reflecting on her personal growth and evolving standards, Efia even touched upon past relationships, admitting that she once dated men without cars. However, those days are firmly in the rearview mirror. A lack of personal transportation has now earned a spot on her ever-growing list of red flags. It seems Efia is unapologetically leveling up her expectations, and she’s not afraid to share her journey.

With her characteristic confidence and crystal-clear vision of what she wants, Efia Odo is planting her feet firmly on the ground, setting her standards high, and making sure the world – and any potential partners – know exactly where she stands. Her candidness is refreshing, sparking conversations about expectations in relationships and the importance of knowing your worth. Whether you agree with her specific criteria or not, Efia’s unapologetic stance is a powerful reminder that everyone has the right to define what they seek in a partner. So, fellas, you’ve been warned! The clock is ticking, and independence is key – at least, if you’re hoping to capture Efia Odo’s attention!

NFA Producer Licence Is Regressive Move- Leila Djansi

0

Leila Djansi

Ghanaian-American filmmaker, Leila Djansi, has commented on the recently announced Producer Licence by the National Film Authority (NFA).

She describes it as a regressive move that goes back to what she calls the “Opera Square era,” a time that contributed to the collapse of the country’s film industry.

The NFA announced that starting May 1, 2025, all films and videos shown to the public in Ghana must be classified by the NFA and made by licenced producers.

But Leila Djansi in an interview with NEWS-ONE said, “It’s giving Opera Square era, honestly. That same era ruined the industry because it wasn’t equipped to compete with the fluidity of global cinema and evolving technology. There was no global mindset.”

Known for her internationally acclaimed films distributed on platforms like Netflix, AMC, and Fandango, Ms. Djansi didn’t hold back in her critique of the new directive.

“Maybe they need money to run the department, but there are more sustainable ways. In every country I’ve worked in whether it’s the U.S., Canada, DR or South Africa, there is no such thing as a producer’s licence issued by a national body. There are unions, there are guilds and they are not even mandatory, but never a preconditioned licence. That’s not how you build capacity. That’s how you create barriers. Again, archaic, outdated and outlandish Opera Square vibes. It doesn’t only disenfranchise the guilds, it completely crumbles any idea of structure, checks, and balances. These guilds need to be dissolved, reformed and then reprogrammed to work.”

Rather than imposing this unusual licence, Ms. Djansi advocates for a more effective approach.

“If revenue and regulation are the goals, permitting at a regional or even district level works better. It also encourages filmmaking at regional and district levels. People will feel included, and it gives you tangible data for advocacy. Lagos is doing this. California, South Africa etc. Ghana doesn’t need a licence. It needs structure. When you have clear proof of industry activity, you can go to the government and advocate for real support whether that’s infrastructure, tax breaks, or training,” she said.

Film Rating

She also challenged the current emphasis on film ratings as part of the policy conversation.

“Film ratings are not universally required. My films have screened on AMC Networks and Netflix even on American TV without ratings. AMC theatres, one of the biggest exhibitors in the U.S. show unrated indie films. Ratings are mainly relevant for national television not for theatrical or digital distribution. Making it mandatory shows a fundamental misunderstanding of how modern distribution works. It’s up to the distributor to decide whether ratings are part of their delivery requirements,” she explained.

In her final assessment, Ms. Djansi hopes the plan, unorthodox as it is, works out.

“It feels like they’re chasing low-hanging fruit. Which is sad because generating revenue isn’t that complex. I hope it works out for them. Not because it’s the right solution, but because the space has become so fragile, even necessary critique is taken as an attack. But the truth is, you can’t keep circling the same tree. At some point, someone has to say: we are lost, this isn’t it. The global film industry is always pivoting, you should move with it if you want those investments,” she added.

Ms. Djansi is a Ghanaian-American filmmaker known for her emotionally resonant and socially driven stories. Her films feature acclaimed talents such as Kimberly Elise (Ties That Bind), Grammy winner Macy Gray (Where Children Play), and Oscar-nominated actor Bruce Davison (37, A Final Promise). She is committed to amplifying African narratives on the global stage and mentoring the next generation of filmmakers across the continent. Her most recent mentorship work was with the UNESCO-Netflix African Folktales Reimagined initiative, where she guided emerging filmmakers in adapting indigenous stories for international audiences.”

ECOWAS Ministers Convene in Accra Over Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger Exit

0

Accra, April 22, GNA – The ECOWAS Council of Ministers will hold an Extraordinary Session from April 22 to 23, 2025, in Accra to discuss the withdrawal of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger from the regional bloc.

The meeting coincides with the ECOWAS 50th anniversary launch in Accra.

The three states announced their exit last January after ECOWAS called for the restoration of democratic rule in Niger following the 2023 military coup.

The breakaway nations later formed the Alliance of Sahel States and introduced their own biometric passports.

ECOWAS said that remaining members agreed to “keep ECOWAS doors open” by recognising national passports bearing the bloc’s logo, maintaining trade under existing regional agreements, and continuing diplomatic cooperation.

In December 2024, ECOWAS granted Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger a six-month grace period to reconsider their departure.

Ghana’s President, John Dramani Mahama, recently met with leaders from the three countries to explore solutions to challenges posed by the Alliance of Sahelian States.

To foster goodwill and reunification, President Mahama invited them to the ECOWAS 50th anniversary launch.

He briefed ECOWAS Chair, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, on the initiative, which faced no resistance—a sign of commitment to reintegrating the nations.

The Accra session will focus on withdrawal modalities, the impact on ECOWAS institutions, and broader regional issues, including the future of integration and multilateralism.

Alan Mends shares his 33-year journey

0

Alan Mends, Managing Director of Iris Place Rehabilitation Centre, strongly believes that overcoming addiction involves more than just the physical and mental aspects; it requires addressing a profound spiritual dimension.

During a candid conversation on the Citi Breakfast Show with Bernard Avle on Tuesday, April 22nd, Alan shared his personal 33-year battle with substance use and the transformative journey that led him to recovery.

“We are never cured of addiction. What we have is a daily reprieve and contingent on the maintenance of our spiritual condition,” he stated, setting a deeply personal tone for the discussion.

As a recovering addict himself, Alan now dedicates his life to running Iris Place, a rehabilitation center he co-founded in 2019. For the past six years, Iris Place has been a beacon of hope for individuals navigating their own paths to recovery, stories that deeply resonate with Alan’s own experiences.

“Iris, a rehabilitation center place, started in 2019 and for six years now I have seen a couple of people come in. And for me, it’s a passion. For me as a person in recovery, because the more I reach out to help others achieve recovery, the better I also sustain and maintain my recovery.”

Despite being raised in a strict, religious environment, Alan’s journey into addiction began with curiosity and the influence of his peers.

“I was brought up by a strict disciplinarian. I was brought up with a Bible and a cane,” he recalled.

Reflecting on his upbringing, Alan emphasized the crucial role of emotional awareness in parenting. He suggested that a deeper understanding of his emotional needs might have provided him with greater resilience against the allure of substance use.

“I believe that parents should go the extra mile to know the emotional aspect of their kids so that they can also get the courage and share.”

A significant turning point occurred when Alan reached his personal “rock bottom,” a moment he described as hitting “the button,” which ignited a genuine desire for change. He confided in his sister about his wish to stop using drugs, but years of unsuccessful attempts had made her skeptical.

“When I hit the button, I told my sister that I wanted to stop, but she couldn’t believe me because we had had countless conversations about my situation. At times, I shed crocodile tears to show that I want to stop, but this time around, it was a serious tear. So she relaxed that I wanted to stop.”

With his sister’s eventual support, Alan entered a treatment facility run by the Catholic Church, where he underwent two and a half years of intensive rehabilitation—an experience he describes as life-altering.

“For me, it was an eureka moment when I got to recovery. At the end of my first year, I had a scholarship to study addiction management.”

Today, Iris Place employs the same twelve-step recovery model that played a pivotal role in Alan’s transformation. This approach focuses not only on detoxification but also on addressing the underlying mental obsession and helping clients discover a renewed sense of purpose.

“They used the twelve-step recovery model, which I also use at my Iris Place. We will help a client to stop using, so that you do not experience what we call the physical allergy, lose the desire to use that deals with the mental obsession, and then find a new way of life.”

Alan clarified that the principles of the twelve-step model extend beyond addiction recovery, offering valuable guidance for navigating life’s challenges.

“The twelve-step model can be likened to any information that comes with a gadget. So it is for everybody, but especially for those of us suffering from substance abuse.”

Ultimately, Alan believes that true addiction recovery necessitates a spiritual foundation. He emphasized that the struggle is not only individual and communal but also deeply connected to one’s relationship with a higher power.

“Because the problem of an addict is a problem of the addict himself, the community, and with God. So it is a spiritual programme,” he concluded.

There’s enough evidence Akonta Mining engaged in galamsey – Minerals Commission

0

The Minerals Commission has confirmed it has gathered solid evidence proving that Akonta Mining Limited engaged in illegal mining activities, widely known as galamsey, within the Tano Nimiri Forest Reserve, despite the company’s repeated public denials.

Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show on Tuesday, April 22, the Chief Executive Officer of the Commission, Isaac Andrew Tandoh, disclosed that the Commission’s findings are based on verified intelligence, including geolocation data and video evidence directly linking Akonta Mining to operations within protected forest zones.

“For the intelligence we have now, the conditions and the videos we have now are more than enough to go after the perpetrators. The AG has been advised to pick up these conversations and make sure that the powers that are behind these perpetrators are brought to book,” he said.

Tandoh’s remarks follow a strong denial from Akonta Mining, which insists it has never conducted unlawful operations within any forest reserve and claims its activities comply with all regulatory requirements.

But Tandoh dismissed the company’s response, describing it as a mere public relations tactic that won’t deter enforcement efforts.

“People can write letters and issue rebuttals in the newspapers; that is not something I will bother my head with, that will trouble me. This is just the beginning. We’ll allow the Attorney General to take over and ensure that the masterminds behind these illicit operations are dealt with in a way that deters others,” he stated.

The Commission’s position aligns with that of the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, which, on Monday, April 21, 2025, announced the revocation of Akonta Mining’s lease. According to Lands Minister Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, the company illegally extended its activities into the Aboi and Tano Nimiri Forest Reserves in the Western North Region, despite only holding licenses for operations in off-reserve areas.

The ongoing probe forms part of the government’s intensified efforts to clamp down on illegal mining and protect Ghana’s forest reserves.

Henry Nana Boakye, National Organiser of NPP Henry Nana Boakye, National Organiser of NPP

The National Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Henry Nana Boakye, popularly known as Nana B, has brushed aside claims by political science lecturer at the KNUST, Dr Richard Amoako Baah, that he, together with other members of the party plan to leave to form another political group.

Speaking on how to navigate the impending “Thank You Tour” of the party, on Neat FM on April, 22, 2025, he stated that the party seeks to express their gratitude to God, all supporters, and revitalise the grassroot members.

He criticised Dr Richard Amoako Baah for his claim that some members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) are planning to break away from the party to form a new one.

He explained that the political science lecturer has been demonstrating anti-party behaviours since the 2024 electioneering campaign.

“Is he still part of the NPP? During the 2024 Election season, he stated publicly that the NPP will lose power. He said a lot of things that are anti-party. So, I’m not surprised,” he said in Twi.

Nana B, subsequently, urged party faithful to look beyond anti-party sentiments and focus on revitalising the grassroot after the heavy defeat in the 2024 Election.

He noted that the impending “Thank You Tour” to be held under the theme, “In All Things, Give Thanks to God” (1 Thessalonians 5:18), primarily seeks to regroup and resolve internal issues.

He added that the tour will begin at the NPP Headquarters from April, 23, 2025, before they proceed to visit all 16 regions.

The exercise which aims to reinforce unity and the bond between the party’s leadership and its grassroots, will be climaxed with an interfaith thanksgiving services comprising of both Christians and Islamic observances.

5 things the late pontiff will be remembered for

A picture of Pope Francis (wearing white robe with a rosary) engaging with children A picture of Pope Francis (wearing white robe with a rosary) engaging with children

The passing of Pope Francis, Head of the Roman Catholic Church, has evoked a profound sense of sorrow, while also prompting a celebration of his enduring legacies and the impactful leadership he demonstrated throughout his papacy.

Pope Francis’s transformational policies and humble lifestyle have come under the spotlight, even as people around the world remember him and reflect on his accomplishments and the significant reforms he championed during his tenure as pope.

GhanaWeb highlights five key things the late Pope Francis will be fondly remembered and celebrated across the globe for.

Advocacy on the Russia-Ukraine War

A defining part of Pope Francis’s legacy was his response to the Russia-Ukraine War. He openly denounced the violence and devastation caused by the conflict, expressing deep concern over the loss of lives and the suffering of countless civilians. Throughout his tenure, he remained a strong advocate for peace, consistently urging all sides to seek a diplomatic and non-violent resolution.

Non-judgmental posture on LGBTQ+ activities

Another key thing the Pope did was his non-condemnation, judgmental, and advocacy for a more open stance of the church on sexuality and the LGBTQ+ community.

Pope Francis gave a seeming posture of being more welcoming to the community rather than pronounce judgment on them.

He is widely remembered for his remark as reported by international news platform, the Associated Press, saying; ‘Who am I to judge?’ in response to a question purportedly about a gay priest.

His remark was widely perceived as comforting, especially by members of the LGBTQ+ community who had long felt shunned and excluded by the church.

Visit to war-torn areas and empathy for victims

Pope Francis emerged as a beacon of hope and refuge for all, particularly for victims of wars, migrants, the underprivileged, and countless other marginalised groups.

He traveled to places seldom visited by his predecessors, including war and conflict zones, refugee camps, slums, and areas affected by natural disasters.

In 2015, he became the first Pope to enter an active war zone when he visited the Central African Republic during its civil war.

Leadership style

Many have eulogised the late Pope for his exemplary leadership style and qualities, which extended their influence beyond the Catholic Church.

He embodied true Christian values, serving as a father figure to all he encountered, regardless of their background or identity.

Modest lifestyle

Pope Francis’ modest approach to life was remarkable, as he chose to live humbly despite having access to considerable luxuries.

As reported by the Associated Press, he rode the bus, prepared his own meals, and frequently visited slums.

His passing has left a profound void in the hearts of many around the world, and his legacy will undoubtedly endure for generations to come.

‘I became paranoid, uncomfortable’ – Gyakie recounts KNUST moments

0

Ghanaian singer Jackline Acheampong, popularly known as Gyakie, has opened up on feeling uncomfortable during her time in school due to the constant pressure from her lecturers.

Gyakie, who studied Business Administration at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), revealed that balancing her education with her music career often made her feel paranoid and overwhelmed.

“Sometimes, going to class becomes a bit uncomfortable because some lecturers know I am a singer, and they randomly ask me questions I am not ready to answer. Sometimes they throw questions at me that I don’t even know the answers to.

“Also in terms of how I dress as a student, I sometimes became paranoid because I don’t feel comfortable in the prescribed dress given to the business student. There are times I go to lectures and people would request for pictures times I don’t feel good about myself,” she said.

Gyakie also recalled how terrified she was during her first stage performance at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).

“I was very scared during my first stage performance. I remember during the Republic Hall SRC week. I went to perform and during that, the speakers went off. I didn’t know what to do and some of the fans were hooting at me, while others tried their best to keep the atmosphere active.

“Nobody asked me to leave the stage. When I got backstage, I cried because I regretted going there,” she added.

FLASHBACK: ‘Akonta Mining is not involved in illegal mining as we speak’

The John Dramani Mahama government has revoked the mining licence of Akonta Mining Limited, a mining company owned by the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako (Chairman Wontumi), over illegal operations.

According to the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, a joint operation by the Ghana Police Service and the Forestry Commission led to the discovery of six illegal mining sites linked to Akonta Mining in the Tano Nimiri Forest Reserve.

But this is not the first time Chairman Wontumi’s mining company has been in the news over its mining activities.

In 2023, the then Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Samuel Abu Jinapor, announced that Akonta Mining was involved in an illegality in the Tano Nimiri Forest Reserve.

However, days after the destruction of the equipment and structures of Akonta Mining in the forest reserve, the then-president, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, exonerated the company of any wrongdoing.

Akufo-Addo said that Wontumi’s company was not engaged in illegal mining anywhere in the country, following calls for the arrest of the NPP regional chairman.

“Let me respond briefly to the chairperson on the issue of illegal mining. I want to assure him and all of you that Akonta Mining is not engaged in any illegal mining anywhere in Ghana as we speak.

“Further, the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources has, through the agency of the Forestry Commission, with the assistance of the military, made the effort to cordon off all 294 sites of forest reserves in the country and rid them of illegal mining as we speak,” he said.

“We will restore indigenous Ghanaian investments in the finance and banking sector and we will create a tier banking system that will serve various segments of the market,” he said in his address at the University of Development Studies in Tamale.

John Mahama also noted that he will ensure that those who lost their jobs in the 2019 banking sector clean-up exercise are re-employed.

“We will give the opportunity to experience banking hands who were laid off needlessly to secure their careers once more and move away from the menial jobs that they were compelled to take.

“As far as practicable the banking licenses that were unjustly canceled by this government will be restored,” he said.

Burna Boy Gives Portable N20m After Boxing Victory

Portable

Grammy-winning Nigerian music star, Burna Boy, has gifted street-hop sensation Portable a whopping N20 million following his triumph in a much-hyped celebrity boxing match against rapper Speed Darlington.

The fight, dubbed “Chaos in the Rings,” saw Portable declared the winner after Speed Darlington failed to return for the second round, reportedly due to a broken arm sustained during the opening exchange.

The event, which had drawn attention for weeks due to the fiery exchanges between the two entertainers, ended dramatically when Speed Darlington’s corner called off the bout.

In the aftermath of the victory, Burna Boy — who has had a long-standing online feud with Speed Darlington — reportedly sent Portable the generous cash gift as a show of support and celebration. The ‘Zazu’ crooner took to his Instagram stories on Saturday to share the news with fans.

“20 million from @burnaboygram,” Portable posted. “If you wanna be like Odogwu, can you do like Odogwu? God bless your family.”

Later Portable was reported to have said Burner had not been picking up his calls after sending him the money.

While Burna Boy has yet to publicly confirm the gesture, Portable’s post quickly went viral, with fans praising the ‘African Giant’ for the unexpected show of generosity. Many also viewed the gift as a subtle jab at Speed Darlington, given the history of tension between the two artists.

The celebrity boxing match was the latest in a string of entertainment-driven sporting events in Nigeria, blending pop culture with sportsmanship and social media drama. Portable’s win adds another viral moment to his unpredictable career, and Burna Boy’s gesture has only added fuel to the conversation.

Stop Premature Jostling For Mahama’s Successor – Asiedu Nketia

0

Johnson Asiedu Nketia

National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has raised strong concerns over what he describes as a premature and dangerous scramble within the party and government to succeed President John Mahama, only three months into his administration.

In an interview with Accra FM, Mr. Nketia, who is popularly known as ‘General Mosquito’, warned that such internal competition, if left unchecked, could derail the Mahama-led government’s performance and sow deep divisions within the NDC.

“If you were President Mahama and three months into your government, some members have already started jostling to succeed you, how can you concentrate on the job?” he questioned.

The NDC Chairman cited growing rumours and social media posts suggesting that top figures in government, including Chief of Staff Julius Debrah, Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu, the Vice President, and himself, are positioning themselves to take over after Mahama. He stressed that this kind of speculation is already creating tension and rivalry within the party.

“We are just running around saying a certain Minister is better than the Chief of Staff, who is his boss—and we have four years ahead of us. What does that mean?” he said. “These things are dangerous for us.”

Mr. Nketia recounted a similar situation in 2020 when TV host Paul Adom-Otchere, speculated on potential leadership pairings within the NDC following the party’s loss in the general election. He said he had to publicly shut down those discussions to preserve unity and focus.

“He started with permutations—Mahama pairing with me, Bagbin pairing with someone else. I saw that and realised this could knock our heads together. I called it village lotto forecasting. After that, he stopped, and it gave us peace to prepare for the next elections,” he said.

According to the NDC Chairman, the latest wave of succession talk, which he linked to political analyst Mussa K. Dankwah, carries similar dangers and must be curtailed immediately.

“This is not about whether it’s accurate or not. It’s about the potential to disrupt the government. If we allow this competition and permutation to fester, it will breed suspicion, motivate corruption, and ultimately damage our government,” he emphasised.

He appealed to all party members and government appointees to rally behind President Mahama and avoid any actions that could undermine his administration.

“Our fate is tied to the success of President Mahama. If scandals hit us because of this competition, that will be the end of us. Let’s give the President and Chief of Staff the peace of mind they need to lead,” he stated.

Mr. Nketia concluded with a stern warning that misinterpretation of decisions by top government officials, particularly the Chief of Staff, could paralyse governance and plunge the party into disarray.

Afenyo-Markin Prediction

Meanwhile, the Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has predicted that the governing NDC would soon face internal challenges over succession planning as President John Mahama begins what is expected to be his final term in office.

Speaking in an interview with veteran talk show host Kwaku Sintim-Misa (KSM), Mr. Afenyo-Markin said political dynamics within the NDC could soon shift, with key players already beginning to look beyond Mahama’s presidency.

“Obviously, the NDC would also have its own challenge,” the Minority Leader said. “Bear in mind that President Mahama has just a term already. I can foresee some internal alignment because by 2027 he may be a lame duck.”

According to Afenyo-Markin, political ambition is a natural part of party dynamics, and some NDC members may begin positioning themselves for leadership as the Mahama era approaches its constitutional limit.

“Politicians always have ambition. So his people may say, ‘Oh, the man is going, what do we do?’ Succession plan. So, there could be internal fights,” he noted.

While he did not name any specific individuals, Mr. Afenyo-Markin’s comments reflect growing speculation that jockeying for influence and future leadership roles may already be underway within the ruling party, just months into Mahama’s final term.

His remarks also come in the wake of warnings by NDC National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketia, who cautioned against premature succession debates and internal rivalry, describing them as potentially disruptive to the government’s effectiveness and unity.

Accra, April 22, GNA – The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) will today, April 22, 2025, officially launch its 50th anniversary in Accra, Ghana.

The event marks the start of year-long celebrations to commemorate the West African economic bloc, founded 50 years ago, on May 28, 1975, in Lagos, Nigeria.

Heads of state from member countries are expected to attend the launch.

Among the early arrivals for the Summit is Mr. Muhammed B. S. Jallow, Vice President of The Gambia.

Celebrations across Member States will follow throughout the year, as recommended by the ECOWAS Conference of Heads of State and Government.

Originally comprised of 15 nations, ECOWAS welcomed Cabo Verde in 1977, while Mauritania withdrew in 2000, signing an association agreement in 2017.

Current members include Benin, Cabo Verde, Côte d’Ivoire, The Gambia, Ghana, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Senegal, and Togo.

As a key pillar of the African Economic Community, ECOWAS works to foster unified economic cooperation in transport, energy, agriculture, and trade, boasting a regional Gross Domestic Product of $734.8 billion.

In 2007, the Secretariat transitioned into a Commission to strengthen leadership and strategic direction.

The Commission is led by a President, Vice-President, five Commissioners, and an Auditor General.

Primarily funded by a 0.5 per cent Community tax on imports from non-member states, ECOWAS drives integration through strategic programmes.

It envisions a 2050 transition from an “ECOWAS of States” to an “ECOWAS of Peoples,” aiming for lasting peace and prosperity.
