Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie is the senior judge of the Supreme Court
Legal practitioner Martin Kpebu has indicated that Supreme Court Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, the most senior judge on the bench, is expected to step in as Acting Chief Justice following the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.
According to Kpebu, this appointment would see Justice Baffoe-Bonnie temporarily assume leadership of the judiciary until a substantive Chief Justice is named.
Following consultations with the Council of State and in accordance with Article 146(6) of the Constitution, President John Dramani Mahama has concluded that there is sufficient basis to proceed with three petitions filed against Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo.
As a result, the Chief Justice has been formally suspended from her duties pending further action.
Speaking in an interview with Accra-based TV3 on April 22, 2025, Martin Kpebu explained that Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, as the most senior judge on the Supreme Court, is conventionally the candidate to take over as Acting Chief Justice.
“There’s a specific provision for it in the constitution. It is explicitly written that, in the absence of the Chief Justice, the most senior justice of the Supreme Court takes over. So it means that Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie is the Acting Chief Justice, there can be no two ways about that,” he said.
Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, born September 11, 1962, in Cape Coast, Ghana, was sworn in as Ghana’s Chief Justice on June 12, 2023, by then-President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, becoming the third female in the role.
She joined the judiciary in 2004, rose to the Supreme Court in 2019, and has driven judicial reforms like the E-Justice system. Educated at the University of Ghana and abroad, she is also an author and poet.

China stands ready to share its latest advanced technologies and technical knowledge with Africa
During a pivotal meeting at the headquarters of the Africa-China Centre for Policy and Advisory (ACCPA) in Accra, the Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, H.E. Tong Defa, underscored China’s commitment to green development and the sharing of advanced technology and technical knowledge with African countries.
Ambassador Tong made these remarks during a courtesy meeting at the ACCPA office, emphasizing that China’s leadership in green development is not only rooted in the latest advancements in technology but also in a spirit of mutual learning and cooperation.
He highlighted that China’s experience in eco-friendly modernization and its portfolio of cutting-edge green technologies are available for African nations to study and adapt as they pursue their own sustainable development goals.
Drawing on the outcomes of the 2024 Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) in Beijing, Ambassador Tong noted that green development was identified as one of the core pillars of the Ten Partnership Actions adopted to guide China-Africa cooperation in the coming years.
He pointed to China’s willingness to support African partners with technical expertise, clean energy solutions, and training opportunities designed to accelerate the continent’s transition to a low-carbon, sustainable future.
“China stands ready to share its latest advanced technologies and technical knowledge with African countries,” Ambassador Tong stated.
“From clean energy projects to sustainable mining practices, our goal is to empower our partners to achieve modernization that is both environmentally responsible and economically inclusive.”
He further explained that China’s approach is grounded in the belief that no country should be left behind in the global drive toward modernization and environmental stewardship.
The meeting provided a platform for open dialogue on how Ghana and other African countries can harness China’s technological advances to support their own green development ambitions.
Asante Kotoko’s decision to part ways with head coach Prosper Narteh Ogum just a few games before the end of the season has sparked widespread discussion among fans and analysts alike.
While official statements have been limited, the club’s Communications Director, Samuel Sarfo Duku, has provided insight into the circumstances surrounding Ogum’s departure.
In an interview with the club’s newspaper, Daily Porcupine, Duku discussed the factors that led to this significant change in the club’s leadership, exploring the internal dynamics and decisions that culminated in Ogum’s exit.
According to Duku, the club granted Ogum full control over player recruitment, with management providing the necessary support.
However, as the players struggled to perform, Duku emphasised that the responsibility for improving the team’s performance lay with the technical team, particularly the coach.
In essence, the poor results were viewed as a reflection of Ogum’s inability to maximize the potential of his squad, ultimately leading to his departure.
“We gave him complete freedom to recruit players of his choice, so if the players aren’t performing and management is doing its part, and it’s clear that the issue is performance-related, who is responsible for improving the team’s results? It is the technical team,” he said.
Despite this setback, Duku reassured fans that the club remains committed to securing trophies by the end of the season, promising to do everything possible to stay on track for success.
“We will continue to do our utmost to win the double, as promised. As I speak to you now, we are still on pace, even though it has become a bit difficult, especially with the league title. We had led for weeks, but now we’ve lost the top spot, trailing by a six-point margin,” he added.

President John Dramani Mahama has set up a five-member Committee to probe petitions against the Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo following her suspension.
According to the presidency communication signed by the Minister of Government Communication, John Mahama suspended the Chief Justice following a prima facie case being determined against her by the Council of State.
Barcelona produced a dramatic comeback to defeat Celta Vigo 4-3, with Raphinha scoring a penalty deep into stoppage time to secure all three points at the Camp Nou.
The Brazilian forward converted from the spot in the eighth minute of added time after VAR confirmed a foul on Dani Olmo inside the box. The late goal completed a thrilling turnaround for the La Liga leaders.
Barcelona had fallen behind 3-1 by the 62nd minute, despite taking an early lead through Ferran Torres. Celta’s Borja Iglesias responded with a clinical hat-trick, putting the visitors on course for a surprise victory.
However, Hansi Flick’s side responded with urgency, netting twice in quick succession through Dani Olmo and Raphinha to level the match. Barcelona maintained pressure, and just when Celta appeared to have secured a point, the VAR decision handed the hosts a final chance.
Raphinha made no mistake from the spot, sealing a vital win that puts Barcelona four points at the top of La Liga following Real Madrid’s hard-earned 1-0 win against Athletic Bilbao on Sunday.

A member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Communications Team, Kwasi Kwarteng, has criticised the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, for his recent emotional reaction on TV over illegal mining activities, popularly known as galamsey.
According to him, the minister’s public display is a sign of weak leadership.
“Nobody should pamper him for what he did. He has been appointed as a minister to solve problems, not to blackmail people through emotions. That is not what leadership is about.
“He is supposed to provide solutions to problems, not to sit on TV and cry. If he feels he is tired, he should resign,” he noted.
The NPP communicator stressed the need for the government to declare a state of emergency to tackle the galamsey menace.
“This is a gentleman who said that as soon as they came into power, they were going to declare a state of emergency.
“What happened to that? How many days have they been in power? Over 100 days. You don’t need two weeks to declare a state of emergency, it has more to do with executive power.
“To the extent that they hid the elections and branded Akufo-Addo as the chief miner, people even said the headquarters of galamsey is Kyebi,” he stated.
During a recent press briefing, the minister broke down in tears as he described the extent of the damage caused by galamsey in the Tano Nimiri Forest Reserve.

Ghana internationals Jordan Ayew and Fatawu Issahaku have been relegated from the English Premier League following Leicester City’s 1-0 home defeat to Liverpool at the King Power Stadium.
A second-half goal by Trent Alexander-Arnold sealed the Foxes’ fate, confirming that Ruud van Nistelrooy’s side will compete in the EFL Championship next season. The result extended Leicester’s poor home form, with the club yet to score a league goal at home in 2025.
Fatawu Issahaku, who has been sidelined since November with an ACL injury, faces his first relegation from the top flight. Jordan Ayew, however, makes history as the first Ghanaian player to be relegated from the Premier League on three separate occasions.
Elsewhere, Kamaldeen Sulemana will also play in the Championship next season, following Southampton’s confirmed relegation earlier this month.
The demotion of three Ghanaian internationals marks a difficult season for the country’s representation in the Premier League.

Rev Steve Mensah is the General Overseer of the Charismatic Evangelistic Ministry
The General Overseer of the Charismatic Evangelistic Ministry, Reverend Steve Mensah, has invoked the wrath of God upon those responsible for the pollution and destruction of water bodies and forest reserves through illegal mining activities, commonly referred to as galamsey.
While delivering a sermon to his congregants during Easter Sunday church service in a video shared by nkonkonsa on Instagram, the man of God addressed the devastating impact of galamsey activities on numerous water bodies that once served as vital sources of clean water for various communities.
He called on God to ‘wipe out’ those who, out of greed, permit these illegal mining operations to persist.
He strongly condemned the actions, criticising individuals who politicise such a serious issue and emphasising the gravity of the situation.
Rev Steve Mensah also stated that the actions of illegal miners are equivalent to committing genocide against the country.
“Those who for the greed of money for themselves and their families are destroying our water bodies, may God kill all of them. The people are committing genocide, poisoning our waters and we are looking on and playing politics around it, it’s evil and barbaric,” he said.
Rev Mensah went on to allege the involvement of certain politicians and chiefs in illegal mining activities, which he said are causing irreparable damage to the nation and its people.
According to him, foreigners are able to easily navigate the country and quickly engage in these unlawful practices due to the weakened and porous state of national systems and laws, enabling them to mine in water bodies without fear of consequences.
“… Some of the politicians, opinion leaders, and the chiefs are involved in the pollution of our waters and God don’t punish them for destroying our water bodies. … foreigners have entered and they are mining on our waters and we are looking on. What kind of people are we? Can you go to China and go do galamsey in China?
“Which country can you go to engage in galamsey? It shows the weakness of our system. The foreigners will come into our country, go into our forest reserve, and then mine in the water and pollute the water and we are looking on playing politics with it. Any politician, any chief, anybody in our water bodies and polluting because of the money for their pocket, poisoning our systems, may God kill them first,” he prayed.
Rev Mensah called on the government not to relent in its fight against illegal mining, urging authorities to take decisive action and enforce stringent measures against both foreigners and Ghanaian nationals involved in galamsey.
“This new government must rise up and take action. All foreigners, Chinese or otherwise, who have polluted our lands should be arrested and deported. It’s time to enforce the law,” he added.

Popular Ghanaian fashionista, Osebo the Zaraman, has shot down rumours that he was facing health issues abroad.
In 2024, rumours were rife on social media that the boutique owner had been battling a severe illness for months and had even undergone surgery in Italy.
Some pastors in Ghana also gave prophecies about spiritual attempts on his Osebo’s life.
In a recent development, Osebo, in an interview with ZionFelix on April 22, 2025, noted that he owes no one an explanation regarding his health issue.
“At the end of the day, I am in the country and the reason why I went abroad, I have done it. So I don’t owe anybody an explanation. I am strong and healthy as well. I thank God that whatever they said didn’t come to pass. I even saw all the prophecies the pastors said about my life. And I must admit they were all fake prophecies, he said.
Osebo the Zaraman further stated that he is not perturbed about what he referred to as lies propagated to tarnish his business and reputation.

A legal practitioner and political analyst, Kwame Jantuah
A legal practitioner and political analyst, Kwame Jantuah, has called for decisive action in the fight against illegal mining (galamsey), starting with the exposure of politicians involved in the practice.
He also called for the revocation of licenses of mining firms allegedly supporting galamsey activities, especially within forest reserves.
“Whether it’s the NDC, NPP, CPP, or PNC, any politician found to be complicit must be exposed. We cannot destroy our country; we have nowhere else to go. If this were any other country with these kinds of gold reserves, you would see how they protect them,” he stated.
“Any licensed mining firm, if they are supporting galamsey in our forest reserves, revoke their license. They have no good intentions. If found complicit, we must take action. Our water bodies are polluted. These days, we don’t even get water in our homes. Water is cut off for three, four days a week. That is a recipe for disaster,” he added while speaking on GHOne TV on April 22, 2025.
Despite Ghana’s vast gold wealth, Jantuah questioned whether it was a blessing or a curse, pointing to widespread environmental degradation, polluted rivers, and a worsening water crisis.
“The entire country is covered in gold. But is that fortunate or unfortunate? Right now, it’s unfortunate because of how we’re managing it,” he said.
Jantuah also expressed strong support for the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources and urged President John Dramani Mahama to act swiftly and decisively.
“We should support the minister. The President should be seen to be taking swift action, no ifs or buts. If someone is arrested, they should face the consequences,” he said.
The Ghanaian government is reportedly scheduled to meet with top executives of Gold Fields today, April 22, 2025, for high-level discussions on ensuring a seamless transition of the Damang Mine in the Western Region.
According to a report by myjoyonline.com, the meeting will include senior officials from Gold Fields’ Group Head Office in South Africa.
Key agenda items include a possible extension of Gold Fields’ management of the mine prior to a complete handover to the state.
The government is reportedly open to allowing the company additional oversight time to prevent operational disruptions.
Gold Fields had earlier requested an extended transition period, and indications suggest the government may approve this, subject to specific conditions.
Meanwhile, authorities have urged Gold Fields to maintain equipment operations at the Damang Mine, with workers instructed to remain at their posts pending further directives.
Background
Earlier in April, the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, announced the government’s takeover of the Damang Mine following the Minerals Commission’s refusal to extend Gold Fields’ operational permit.
However, today’s discussions could revise the transition timeline, potentially granting Gold Fields up to a year of continued management before full state control.

In January 2023, Shakhtar Donetsk struck a high-profile deal to sell Mykhailo Mudryk to Chelsea for €70 million, following significant interest from several top European clubs.
Following the transfer, club CEO Sergei Palkin revealed the far-reaching impact of the fee beyond football.
In an interview, Palkin disclosed that club owner Rinat Akhmetov directed €25 million from the transfer fee to support Ukraine’s defense against Russia and provide humanitarian aid to citizens affected by the ongoing war.
The Russia–Ukraine war began with a full-scale invasion by Russia on February 24, 2022, escalating a conflict that had started in 2014 with the annexation of Crimea. Russia launched attacks from multiple fronts, aiming to seize control of major Ukrainian regions.
Ukraine responded with strong resistance under the leadership of President Zelenskyy, receiving extensive military and humanitarian support from Western allies.
The war has led to hundreds of thousands of military casualties, widespread civilian suffering, and the displacement of millions. Russia continues to occupy parts of eastern and southern Ukraine, and despite international sanctions and failed peace talks, the conflict remains unresolved.
Meanwhile, Mudryk has been provisionally suspended by the Football Association after testing positive for a banned substance. The drug in question, ‘meldonium’, was reportedly administered while he was abroad and not on club duty.
Ukraine had fixtures in Albania and Georgia during that period. Under FA regulations, Mudryk could face a ban of up to four years.
Despite maintaining his innocence, the former Shakhtar Donetsk forward is currently not training at Chelsea’s Cobham facility and is instead following a personalized fitness program from home.

A group calling itself the Real Concerned Youth of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has condemned a press conference recently held by another group identifying as the “Concerned and Aggrieved Youth of the NDC” over the delayed selection of a District Chief Executive (DCE) for Kpandai.
During a press conference on Monday, April 21, at the constituency party office in Kpandai, the Real Concerned Youth issued a statement clarifying that their intention was not to attack anyone but to promote unity and uphold the values that bind the NDC in the district.
They emphasised their commitment to defending the party’s integrity and ensuring due process in the DCE selection.
The youth, led by Janfour Benipoumchie, reminded the public that the power to appoint a District Chief Executive rests solely with the President of the Republic.
Their position, as the Real Concerned Youth of the NDC in Kpandai, is clear and principled: “The President has the right to appoint any qualified, competent, and loyal member of the party from the three shortlisted candidates, should he deem them fit.”
“In fact, we want to remind them that 17 party members in total applied for the DCE position when the three names were published by Tamale radio. The remaining 14 aspirants and their numerous supporters did not rise up in protest. Were they fools? Don’t they also have followers? Couldn’t they have destabilised the party? They did not, because they respected the process.
“Even though it did not go their way, they still respected the process and kept faith. If those 14 had reacted with the same energy and resistance being shown now, would the three shortlisted individuals have had the peace of mind to travel to Accra for vetting? This shows the maturity and discipline of the remaining 14 aspirants. That is what we call respect and love for the party,” Janfour Benipoumchie stressed.
The youth condemned the use of derogatory language, such as “weak,” “unpopular,” or claims that someone had been “smuggled” into the process, calling such statements unfortunate, inaccurate, disrespectful, and misleading.
“Just take a look at those referring to the party leadership as weak, unpopular, and smuggled. Who among them possesses the qualities that are closer to the rank and file of the party in Kpandai? Every single individual who showed interest in this contest is a proud member of our party and has served in various capacities, sacrificed, and earned the right to be appointed as the DCE of Kpandai. We call on our colleagues to stop these baseless attacks and personal insults. We shall gain nothing by threatening each other. If anything, we weaken our party and give power to our opponents to use against us,” he added.
The group also condemned the recent attack on the Constituency Chairman, Mr. Kwame Bawa, popularly known as “Who Knows,” during the press conference held by the allegedly aggrieved youth on April 20.
They described the attack as unnecessary and disrespectful, noting that disagreements with a leader’s stance should always be addressed with respect and dignity to ensure party unity.
The Real Concerned Youth further criticised calls for the resignation of the Constituency Chairman, suggesting that such actions only served the interests of a few individuals rather than the broader party membership.
“Accusing the Constituency Chairman of betraying the constituency simply because you disagree with the process does not reflect the values of the NDC. The NDC is bigger than a few individuals’ interests. We also take serious issue with the threat issued to the President that if the President does not choose from the three names, the NDC in Kpandai will be ‘dead and buried.’ How can a few individuals from a polling station we always lose threaten the movement to appoint an individual of their interest as the DCE?” Janfour asked.
They assured the regional and national leadership that the views of the Real Concerned Youth in Kpandai represented the majority of NDC members in the district. They made it clear that the voices of the self-proclaimed aggrieved youth, who had not even won their own polling station, should not be taken seriously.
The Real Concerned NDC Youth in Kpandai expressed confidence that the NDC in the district is alive, strong, and reshaping. They called for the appointment of a DCE who would support the resetting agenda of President John Dramani Mahama and the NDC government—someone who could help move the district forward, regardless of whether they were from the original shortlist.
The group also reiterated their support for the careful and thoughtful approach taken by the national leadership, as outlined by the National Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, who had addressed the issue of delays in MMDCE appointments.
They reminded everyone that the leadership has received multiple petitions and concerns from across the country and is taking its time to vet, consult, and appoint the most suitable candidate.
In conclusion, the Real Concerned NDC Youth in Kpandai called for unity within the party and urged their colleagues to focus on the party’s success rather than individual interests. They pledged their full support for whoever is appointed as DCE, provided the candidate is NDC, and called on all party members in Kpandai to do the same.
They also urged the President, the National Chairman, and other party executives to disregard the press conference held by the allegedly aggrieved youth, describing it as “misinforming, misleading, and ultimately selfish.”

High in the misty peaks of the Kwahu mountains, where laughter meets tradition and the skies are alive with paragliders and celebration, something extraordinary unfolded this, Easter.
What was expected to be another weekend of culture, colour, and thrill turned into a defining moment of national unity. It wasn’t just the music or the energy that caught people’s attention — it was a handshake.
A powerful, symbolic gesture that echoed far beyond the hills.
For over a century, Kwahu Easter has been the heartbeat of Ghana’s festive calendar. Tens of thousands of revelers — from thrill-seekers to culture enthusiasts — make the journey each year for the parades, the business forums, the high-altitude adventure, and the deep sense of belonging. But in 2025, it delivered more than excitement. It delivered hope.
On Saturday, April 19, 2025, President John Dramani Mahama, in town for the Kwahu Business Forum, made a quiet but history-making visit to a familiar face: former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
The two leaders met at the Obomeng residence of Mike Twum-Barimah, CEO of MidWest GH Ltd., where they were joined by renowned entrepreneur Kwame Ofosu Bamfo, CEO of Bamson Group, the powerhouse behind Sikkens Paint, Glostal Aluminium, and Alisa Hotel.
Two giants of Ghana’s political scene, once fierce contenders, now sitting side by side — not to debate, but to reconnect. And it wasn’t staged for the cameras. It was personal. It was powerful. And it was real. The man credited with bringing this meeting to life is Julius Debrah, the Chief of Staff of Mahama’s administration and a proud son of Obomeng Kwahu.
His behind-the-scenes diplomacy and deep ties to his hometown made the moment possible. In Obomeng, he’s now being hailed as a quiet hero.
Eyewitnesses say President Mahama who was driven up the winding hills, stepped out of his car with a smile, and embraced his former opponent with warmth and respect. The atmosphere? Charged. The symbolism? Unmistakable.
As the images spread across social media — the handshake, the smiles, the togetherness — something shifted. For many Ghanaians, the moment pierced through years of political noise and tension. It reminded them of what leadership could look like: disagreement without division, dialogue over discord.
“This is how we move forward as a country,” said one festival-goer at the Obomeng street fair.
“It’s not just about elections. It’s about setting an example. If they can sit together, why can’t we?”
The political impact of this unexpected encounter is already being felt. Analysts suggest it could ease political polarisation ahead of the 2028 elections.
In a nation where party colours often define allegiances down to the dinner table, this gesture of unity might very well open a new chapter — one of civility, mutual respect, and national focus.
Kwahu Easter has always been a celebration of life — of culture, family, and resilience. But this year, it became something deeper: a symbol of possibility.
Beyond the paragliders and concerts, beyond the roaring engines and packed viewing spots, there was a message from the mountaintop.
Ghana is bigger than its politics. And unity is still possible.
It began with a drive, a handshake, and a shared smile between two of Ghana’s most iconic leaders. It ended with a nation feeling just a little more hopeful.
The Better Ghana Alliance has issued a sharp rebuttal to a recent article published by the Digital Public Policy Forum (DPPF) claiming that KGL is Africa’s most accomplished Lotto Marketing Company (LMC).
In a detailed rejoinder released Monday, the Alliance described the claim as misleading and an apparent attempt to deflect from serious concerns raised by the Financial and Business Services Employees Union (FBSEU) of the National Lottery Authority (NLA).
Legal ambiguities Over KGL’s status
Central to the Alliance’s concerns is a “misrepresentation” of KGL’s licensing status.
According to the group, KGL is not recognised in law as an LMC under the National Lotto Act, 2006 (Act 722). Instead, it operates as a “Third-Party Collaborator,” a designation that lacks the privileges and responsibilities associated with LMCS.
The group pointed to Section 2(4) of Act 722, which permits collaborations but does not establish a legal basis for the “online LMC” category referenced in the DPPF report.
Regulatory breaches and revenue concerns
Even if KGL were considered an LMC, the Alliance contends its operations would violate several provisions of the Act. These include requirements for prepayment before sales, NLA oversight of sales data, and NLA’s exclusive mandate to pay prize monies and commissions.
It further argued that KGL’s activities have contributed to significant revenue losses to the state.
Citing industry estimates, the group claims KGL’s daily sales, believed to range between GH¢8 million and GH¢12 million, could generate up to GH¢2.8 billion annually under proper LMC frameworks. However, the company’s reported annual contribution of GH¢250 million falls far short of this potential.
Automation and Oversight: A misleading narrative?
While acknowledging the role of digital transformation in modernising public institutions, the Alliance disputes the notion that KGL was a pioneer in this regard.
It insists that the NLA had already developed digital solutions prior to KGL’s entry, citing platforms like *890# and systems such as Simnet and Lots.
DPPF’s portrayal of KGL as a digital innovator, the Alliance argues, omits key facts about previous directives for digital operators to cease operations due to regulatory breaches.
Allegations of institutional capture
The Better Ghana Alliance’s concerns echo those raised in a 2022 petition to the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) by a lotto receiver, Kwaku Antwi-Boadu.
The petition accuses KGL of having effectively “impoverished” the NLA and driving it into debt.
The petitioner alleged that delays in commission payments, inability to renovate NLA facilities, and the late disbursement of prize money are the direct results of the NLA-KGL partnership.
Antwi-Boadu also questioned KGL’s technological claims, stating that mobile lottery services predated the company’s involvement.
The petition asserted that the NLA was deliberately weakened to allow KGL to dominate, with concerns having previously been raised with senior national security officials, including Major General (Retired) Adu Amanfo.
Calls for government action
The Alliance urged government agencies and regulatory bodies to conduct an independent investigation into the NLA-KGL relationship and its broader implications for public accountability.
They warn that the current structure allows for significant state revenue leakage, with reports suggesting only GH¢800 million of Ghana’s GH¢1.8 billion lottery market is being captured by the NLA.
In conclusion, the Better Ghana Alliance called for a renewed focus on regulatory enforcement and institutional integrity rather than what it termed the “glorification of a single entity.”
Member of Parliament for Asante Akyem North, Andy Kwame Appiah-Kubi
A former Member of Parliament for Asante Akyem North, Andy Kwame Appiah-Kubi, has refuted claims suggesting that Akonta Mining is involved in illegal mining activities.
In an interview on JoyNews and monitored by GhanaWeb on Tuesday, April 22, 2025, the former lawmaker stated that Akonta Mining has never entered any forest reserve to engage in illegal mining activities, popularly known as galamsey.
“It is a mistake that people who ought to know better make, referring to Akonta Mining as engaged in illegal mining. Akonta Mining is not one of the small-scale mining entities. It is a large-scale mining company and has never entered any forest reserve in Ghana,” he stated.
“It has never been the case that Akonta Mining has existed or operated in any forest zone, in fact, Akonta Mining is not among the companies permitted to engage in forest area mining,” he added.
The Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, has ordered the immediate revocation of all mining licences held by Akonta Mining Company Limited.
At a press conference on Monday, April 21,2025, he disclosed that Akonta Mining had been implicated in series of illegal activities, including unauthorised mining within protected forest reserves and illegal sale of mining concessions.
“This company has not only trespassed into protected reserves but has become a criminal syndicate, selling access of the Aboi Forest Reserve to illegal miners for a staggering GH₵300,000 per concession,” he stated.
Meanwhile, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako (Chairman Wontumi), has stated that his company, Akonta Mining Limited, will take legal action against the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources over the revocation of the company’s mining licence.

Following widespread social media reports alleging negligence over the death of a patient at the Accident and Emergency Ward of the Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH), the Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has paid an unannounced visit to the facility to assess challenges in healthcare delivery.
The visit, according to the Minister, was to obtain firsthand insight into the difficulties confronting health professionals in the Northern Region. His first stop was the TTH, the only major referral hospital in Tamale.
Speaking in an interview during the visit on Tuesday, April 22, the Minister expressed concern over the number of non-functional medical equipment at the facility.
He noted with worry that despite payments being made to suppliers, many of the machines remain idle and unused.
He also highlighted President John Dramani Mahama’s commitment to finding a lasting solution to the persistent water crisis that has affected healthcare delivery at TTH and in the region as a whole.
“…There are some of them that I would have to escalate to the president. The Tamale water incident is beyond the Tamale Teaching Hospital. Tamale has a major water crisis; it is not an issue of the health sector, and it is a priority area for the president, as he will solve the issue of the water crisis in Tamale.
“There are issues of equipment that have been supplied to the hospital that are not working at all, and we will look into all that, because you can not supply equipment without installing it, and yet you have been paid”, he said.
Touching on plans to replace faulty equipment at the referral facility, the Minister stated that any interventions from his ministry would be guided by the hospital management’s stated priorities.
He also called on residents to continue to have confidence in the hospital and to patronise its services, assuring them of improved healthcare delivery shortly.
“When we finish with them, we will all think through it, because I can not do it all alone, I have to involve them, and we are thinking through it together. Everybody should remain calm and let us continue to patronise the facility,” he stated.
Member of Parliament for Abetifi, Bryan Acheampong, has pledged to fully fund the reconstruction of the Adum BlueLight section of Kumasi’s Central Business District, which was recently destroyed by fire—pending approval from the Asantehene and city authorities.
The former Food and Agriculture Minister made the announcement during a visit to the market, where he also donated GHS 300,000 to affected traders.
The fire, which occurred on Friday, March 21, caused extensive property damage, leaving many traders struggling to resume operations.
In the absence of official clearance for reconstruction, some traders have erected temporary structures to continue their businesses.
Mr. Acheampong said he will consult with the Asantehene, the Ashanti Regional Minister, and other local authorities to seek approval for the project.
“Coming here today, you will see that they have started building, but the structures are very weak, yet they are supporting it with block work. But these are not stable. I want to engage the Otumfuo, who is out of the country, and if he permits, also the assembly permits, we want to rebuild this structure for them in 12 months.
“We will put in a very strong infrastructure, and then we will clean the front, put up some stores so that the traders here can have some normalcy to their lives.”

Executive Secretary of the Importers and Exporters Association of Ghana, Samson Asaki Awingobit
The Executive Secretary of the Importers and Exporters Association of Ghana, Samson Asaki Awingobit, has called on the government to urgently seek alternative markets in response to the proposed tariffs by the United States on Ghanaian exports.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with GhanaWeb Business on the sidelines of the Kwahu Business Forum, Awingobit stressed the need for Ghana to shift its focus toward regional trade opportunities, particularly within the framework of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
“At the time the US imposed the tariff on us, I announced that there is a need for the Ghanaian government to look for opportunities elsewhere. We must tap into the African Continental Free Trade Area to ensure that the 54 countries participating in the AfCFTA can start trading effectively now,” he said.
He added, “I believe market access is key to us, it’s paramount. I strongly believe the government should take the lead in this effort and move forward. The biggest market we were exporting to under AGOA was the US. Now that the US is trying to impose tariffs on us, it gives us the opportunity to look elsewhere.”
He highlighted market access as crucial to the survival and growth of Ghanaian businesses, stressing that the government must take the lead in promoting value addition and export diversification.
Awingobit also expressed optimism about the Ministry of Trade’s efforts to spearhead engagements with other countries to promote Ghanaian goods.
“Looking elsewhere now, I’m happy that the Ministry of Trade wants to lead the charge, to reach out to other countries. China, for instance, is a huge market—the biggest market so far as Ghanaian produce is concerned,” he added.

Renowned Ghanaian musician Ackah Blay has stated that constant collaborations with other top artistes are responsible for his longevity in the music industry.
In an interview with Adom TV, shared on Instagram on April 22, 2025, Ackah Blay revealed that working with other veteran musicians has had a positive impact on his career.
“To be frank, you have to learn when playing with top artistes because they know more than you do. Playing with senior artistes is an opportunity to learn from them.
“When I started playing with George Darko, we went on a trip to Germany. He used to sleep in the same room with me. He would mostly wake up at 4 in the morning and play his guitar until 6,” he said.
Ackah Blay added that despite his experience in music, he continues to learn from younger artistes in the industry.
“Also, as a human being, you always have to keep learning. Even when working with younger artistes, you must be open to learning. When I go to the studios, I learn from them, especially when I watch them play certain instruments or beats,” he added.

Acting CEO of the Students Loan Trust Fund (SLTF), Dr Saajida Shiraz
The Private Universities Students’ Association of Ghana (PUSAG) has urgently appealed to the Students Loan Trust Fund (SLTF) for immediate action to prevent a potential crisis among its members.
PUSAG President, Ibrahim Issah, made the appeal during a recent meeting with the Acting CEO of the SLTF, Dr Saajida Shiraz.
He used the opportunity to advocate for the prompt disbursement of student loans and the implementation of long-term solutions tailored to the unique needs of private university students.
The meeting followed growing concerns that delays in loan disbursements could lead to exam deferments and disqualifications for students struggling to pay their fees.
During the discussion at the SLTF Head Office in Accra, President Issah emphasised the urgent need for financial assistance as students prepare for their end-of-semester examinations.
He urged the SLTF to expedite the release of funds to ensure that no student is barred from sitting exams due to outstanding fees.
Beyond the immediate disbursement issue, PUSAG presented a comprehensive set of proposals to address the systemic challenges faced by students attending private universities. These included a restructuring of the SLTF portal’s opening and disbursement calendar to align with the diverse academic schedules of private institutions.
PUSAG also called for a review of the current loan ceiling of GH¢2,550 per academic year, arguing that it is insufficient to cover the often higher tuition fees charged by private universities.
In response, PUSAG proposed the introduction of a “Students Loan Plus” initiative, specifically designed for students in fee-paying institutions and high-cost programs.
Further proposals included a joint PUSAG-SLTF national awareness campaign aimed at educating students on responsible loan usage, credit management, and repayment options. PUSAG also suggested linking SLTF beneficiaries to internship and employment opportunities to facilitate sustainable loan repayment after graduation.
To incentivize service in underserved areas, the association proposed loan forgiveness or incentive programs for graduates who accept postings to rural communities.
Finally, PUSAG requested the establishment of a dedicated PUSAG Desk at the SLTF Secretariat and the provision of internship opportunities for private university students.
In response to PUSAG’s concerns and proposals, Dr. Saajida Shiraz, Acting CEO of the SLTF, expressed her support and assured President Issah that the issues raised would be escalated to the government and relevant stakeholders for consideration and action.
Prosper Narteh Ogum is a former coach of Asante Kotoko
Prosper Narteh Ogum is set to receive a $16,000 compensation package following his dismissal as head coach of Asante Kotoko, sources have confirmed to Kessben Sports.
The payout is part of a severance agreement between the coach and the club after a turbulent period that culminated in his unexpected departure.
Ogum was shown the exit on Monday, April 21, 2025, following a string of poor results, including consecutive defeats to Accra Lions and Nations FC.
As part of his exit package, Asante Kotoko will pay Ogum a total of $16,000. This amount reportedly includes three months of unpaid wages, estimated at $12,000, along with a $4,000 severance bonus.
Ogum’s departure comes at a critical juncture in Asante Kotoko’s season, with only six games remaining in the Ghana Premier League.
Following his dismissal, Dreams FC coach Karim Zito is reportedly set to step in as interim coach for the remainder of the season, as Asante Kotoko strives for the domestic double.
During his second stint at Asante Kotoko, Ogum recorded seven losses, thirteen wins, and eight draws in twenty-eight games.
The Porcupine Warriors currently sit fourth in the Ghana Premier League standings with 47 points, six behind league leaders Bibiani Gold Stars.

The UN’s World Food Programme has said it has reached three million people so far this year
In a stark warning, the head of the UN’s food aid agency in Ethiopia has said millions in the country are “one shock away from falling into a catastrophe”.
Zlatan Milišić’s statement came as he announced that because of a lack of funding the World Food Programme (WFP ) “is being forced to halt treatment” for more than half a million malnourished women and children starting next month.
Those affected are among 3.6 million people who would no longer have access to food aid in the coming weeks without more money coming in, the WFP has warned.
Ethiopia is still feeling the after-effects from a two-year civil war in the northern region of Tigray that ended in 2022.
There is also ongoing violence in the two most populous regions, Amhara and Oromia, that has forced hundreds of thousands from their homes. Plus conflicts in neighbouring countries has led to an influx of refugees.
An on-going drought in the south-east of the country is also causing concern.
In a statement which outlines that “hunger and malnutrition are on the rise” in the country of 130 million people, the WFP said 650,000 women and children will not be getting what it calls “life-saving” help from May.
Looking beyond next month, Mr Milišić said that without more funding “we will not be able to deliver any food assistance to the most vulnerable families we support in three months from now”.
The WFP said it was facing a shortfall of $222m (£166m) for the April-September period in Ethiopia, “despite the generosity of many governments and individual donors”.
The WFP has not been affected by the Trump administration’s cuts to its foreign aid programme, a UN spokesperson told the BBC, adding that “we have not received enough funding from all donors”.
In addition to financial constraints, the WFP said its humanitarian operations have been disrupted by the ongoing violence and insecurity in Amhara, “threatening our ability to reach over half a million vulnerable people in the region”.
“Criminal activities such as car hijacking, threats, and theft, are on the rise and pose serious risks to staff safety and impact the delivery of life saving assistance,” it added.
Ethiopia, a country of a population of around 130 million people, has also been receiving thousands of refugees from Sudan, Somalia, South Sudan and Eritrea.
Head coach of Dreams FC, Abdul Karim Zito, has been named the NASCO Premier League Coach of the Month for March, following an outstanding run of form with his side.
Zito led Dreams FC through an unbeaten stretch during the month, recording three wins and a draw to collect 10 points. His side impressed with back-to-back away victories over Heart of Lions and Hearts of Oak, scoring four goals and conceding just one across all four fixtures.
The strong performances saw Dreams FC rise from the bottom half of the Ghana Premier League table, marking a significant turnaround in their campaign.
In recognition of his achievement, Coach Zito will be presented with a 42-inch NASCO television, courtesy of Electroland Ghana Limited.

The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako (Chairman Wontumi), has reacted to the revocation of the mining licence of his company, Akonta Mining, by the government.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with GhanaWeb, the NPP regional chairman refuted the government’s claim that his company was engaged in illegal mining activities in the Tano Nimiri Forest Reserve in the Western Region.
He indicated that the allegations by the government are mere propaganda being pushed by elements in the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) in an attempt to disgrace him, just as was done in 2020.
Wontumi stated that his company has not been operating for years since the Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo government suspended its licence in 2023, adding that the mere fact that security operatives caught illegal miners on a section of forest reserve land leased to Akonta Mining does not mean the company is engaging in any form of illegality.
“Akonta Mining has a legitimate licence, like all the major international large-scale mining companies. We have a lease to mine in the forest, and part of it was devastated by illegal miners. That is the area we are reclaiming.
“The fact that you go and arrest illegal miners on our land does not mean they are working for us. This is not true. We do not agree with that at all. Recently, some illegal miners went to the reserves of AngloGold to mine. Are you going to say that they were working for AngloGold? No. Even in that case, people died,” he said in the Twi dialect.
He added, “Is Honourable Armah Kofi-Buah saying that because of this, he is going to revoke the licence of AngloGold or other companies whose lands have been taken over by galamsey operators?”
He said his company has no control over who enters the forest reserve, as that responsibility lies with the Forestry Commission of Ghana.
Chairman Wontumi also accused the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, of bringing the mining equipment of illegal miners to Akonta Mining’s compound to make it appear as though the company was engaging in illegal activities.
“He (the minister) had the security officers transport the excavators and other mining equipment belonging to some people and move them to our yard. We had only two bulldozers and excavators, which were being used for the reclamation of the land. None of our machines were there,” he claimed.
He added that the government has revived the allegations against him just to divert public attention from the current challenges in the country and scandals within the government.
Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, during a press briefing on April 21, 2025, directed the Minerals Commission to revoke the mining licence of Akonta Mining Ltd over illegal operations.
According to him, a joint operation by the Ghana Police Service and the Forestry Commission led to the discovery of six illegal mining sites linked to Akonta Mining.
The minister said that the operation in Compartment 49, which began at 5 AM and lasted a full 12 hours, resulted in:
• 51 arrests (8 Chinese nationals, 39 Ghanaian men, and 4 Ghanaian women)
• Seizure of about 30 excavators, 5 of which were recovered and impounded at the operation base
• Two pump-action guns loaded with 5 and 2 rounds of BB cartridges, respectively
• One single-barrel gun retrieved
• Confiscation of 2 Toyota Hilux pickups, 1 Toyota RAV4, 4 motorbikes, and a cache of mining equipment

In a case unprecedented since Ghana embarked on the multiparty democratic system in 1992, the President has suspended the Chief Justice of the country.
The president by a warrant has suspended the Chief Justice and has set up a committee to inquire into allegations made against her by three individuals.
A press statement issued from the Presidency, says the President, John Dramani Mahama has in accordance with Article 146(6) of the Constitution and consultation with the Council of State, determined that a prima facie case has been established in respect of three petitions against the Chief Justice, Her Ladyship Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo.
“The President has consequently, established a committee in compliance with Article 146(6) of the Constitution and in consultation with the Council of State with the following composition to inquire into the petitions which have been referred to them,” it said.
The members of the committee chaired by Supreme Court judge, Justice Gabriel Scott Pwamang, are Justice Samuel Kwame Adibu-Asiedu, Justice of the Supreme Court, Mr Daniel Yaw Domelevo (Former Auditor-General), Major Flora Bazwaanura Dalugo of the Ghana Armed Forces, and Professor James Sefah Dzisah, Associate Professor, at the University of Ghana.
The statement indicated that pursuant to Article 146/101 of the constitution and in accordance with the advice of the Council c State, the President has by a warrant, suspended the Chief Justice with immediate effect pending the outcome of the committee’s proceedings.
Three petitions have been made against the Chief Justice for among others misbehaviour and incompetence.
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has sharply downgraded its global growth forecast, projecting the world economy to expand by just 2.8% in 2025, a significant drop from the 3.3% forecast made in January.
This update is contained in the published IMF’s April 2025 World Economic Outlook (WEO), which cites escalating trade tensions with the United States announcing a wave of new tariffs with trading partners responding with their own countermeasures, creating ripple effects across global supply chains and investor sentiment.
It also cites mounting policy uncertainty as the main culprits behind the slowdown.
“Since the release of the January 2025 WEO Update, a series of new tariff measures by the United States and countermeasures by its trading partners have been announced and implemented, ending up in near-universal US tariffs on April 2 and bringing effective tariff rates to levels not seen in a century.
“This on its own is a major negative shock to growth. The unpredictability with which these measures have been unfolding also has a negative impact on economic activity and the outlook and, at the same time, makes it more difficult than usual to make assumptions that would constitute a basis for an internally consistent and timely set of projections.
“Given the complexity and fluidity of the current moment, this report presents a “reference forecast” based on information available as of April 4, 2025 (including the April 2 tariffs and initial responses), in lieu of the usual baseline. This is complemented with a range of global growth forecasts, primarily under different trade policy assumptions.
“The swift escalation of trade tensions and extremely high levels of policy uncertainty are expected to have a significant impact on global economic activity. Under the reference forecast that incorporates information as of April 4, global growth is projected to drop to 2.8 percent in 2025 and 3 percent in 2026—down from 3.3 percent for both years in the January 2025 WEO Update, corresponding to a cumulative downgrade of 0.8 percentage point, and much below the historical (2000–19) average of 3.7 percent,” part of the report read.
In advanced economies, growth is now expected to slow to 1.4% in 2025, with the U.S. economy seeing a notable downgrade—now projected at 1.8%, nearly a full percentage point below previous estimates. In emerging market and developing economies, growth is expected to slow down to 3.7 percent in 2025 and 3.9 percent in 2026, with significant downgrades for countries affected most by recent trade measures, such as China. Global headline inflation is expected to decline at a pace that is slightly slower than what was expected in January, reaching 4.3 percent in 2025 and 3.6 percent in 2026, with notable upward revisions for advanced economies and slight downward revisions for emerging market and developing economies in 2025.
The IMF flagged intensifying downside risks, warning that a deeper trade war, rising financial instability, and fragile policy buffers could worsen the economic landscape. Vulnerable emerging markets could face capital flight, currency pressures, and increasing debt burdens.
The Fund also noted that a reversal or de-escalation of current trade policies could offer a reprieve and potentially revive global growth.
“Intensifying downside risks dominate the outlook. Ratcheting up a trade war, along with even more elevated trade policy uncertainty, could further reduce near- and long-term growth, while eroded policy buffers weaken resilience to future shocks. Divergent and rapidly shifting policy stances or deteriorating sentiment could trigger additional repricing of assets beyond what took place after the announcement of sweeping US tariffs on April 2 and sharp adjustments in foreign exchange rates and capital flows, especially for economies already facing debt distress.
“Broader financial instability may ensue, including damage to the international monetary system. Demographic shifts and a shrinking foreign labor force may curb potential growth and threaten fiscal sustainability. The lingering effects of the recent cost-of-living crisis, coupled with depleted policy space and dim medium-term growth prospects, could reignite social unrest. The resilience shown by many large emerging market economies may be tested as servicing high debt levels becomes more challenging in unfavorable global financial conditions.
“More limited international development assistance may increase the pressure on low-income countries, pushing them deeper into debt or necessitating significant fiscal adjustments, with immediate consequences for growth and living standards. On the upside, a deescalation from current tariff rates and new agreements providing clarity and stability in trade policies could lift global growth,” it added. The report calls for coordinated policy action, urging nations to work together to restore predictability in trade, strengthen debt sustainability, and address long-term structural challenges like demographic shifts and migration.
President John Dramani Mahama has suspended Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo following the establishment of a prima facie case in response to three separate petitions seeking her removal from office.
The decision, in line with Article 146(6) of the 1992 Constitution and taken in consultation with the Council of State, was announced on Tuesday, April 22. It marks a significant moment in Ghana’s judicial history, as the country’s top judge now faces a formal inquiry into her conduct.
While the specific allegations contained in the petitions have not been publicly disclosed, they have stirred widespread debate within legal and political circles, raising questions about judicial accountability and the integrity of the judiciary’s leadership.
In accordance with constitutional procedures, Chief Justice Torkornoo was furnished with copies of the petitions and given 10 days to respond. She submitted her written response on April 7.
Following a review of the response and further consultations, the President determined that a prima facie case had been established. Consequently, a five-member committee has been set up under Article 146(6) to investigate the matter.
The committee is composed as follows:
Justice Gabriel Scott Pwamang, Justice of the Supreme Court – Chairman
Justice Samuel Kwame Adibu Asiedu, Justice of the Supreme Court – Member
Daniel Yaw Domelevo, Former Auditor-General – Member
Major Flora Bazwaanura Dalugo, Ghana Armed Forces – Member
Professor James Sefah Dzisah, Associate Professor, University of Ghana – Member
Per Article 146(10) of the Constitution and upon the advice of the Council of State, the President has issued a warrant for the immediate suspension of the Chief Justice pending the outcome of the committee’s investigations.
The coming weeks are expected to shape a defining chapter in Ghana’s constitutional and judicial landscape, as the committee begins its inquiry into the petitions.

The Acting Managing Director of the Precious Minerals Marketing Company (PMMC), Sammy Gyamfi, has stated that the accountability period for the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, is near.
According to Gyamfi, the government’s revocation of Chairman Wontumi’s Akonta Mining licence is a testament to President John Dramani Mahama’s commitment to tackling illegal mining, also known as “galamsey.”
“The day of reckoning for Chairman Wontumi and his ilk has come. @JDMahama means business. Together with well-meaning Ghanaians, we shall win the fight against illegal mining and preserve our environment,” he stated in a social media post on April 22, 2025.
His comments follow the government’s directive, through the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Armah-Kofi Buah, instructing the Minerals Commission to revoke the mining lease of Akonta Mining, a company owned by Chairman Wontumi, over alleged breaches.
Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah has asked the Minerals Commission to revoke the mining licence of Akonta Mining Ltd over illegal operations.
According to him, a joint operation by the Ghana Police Service and the Forestry Commission led to the discovery of six illegal mining sites linked to Akonta Mining.
Akonta Mining Ltd is owned by NPP’s Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.
“Some interviews with a few residents indicate that the modus operandi of Akonta Mining is to use force to enter and destroy even the farmlands and produce of poor farmers in the area.
“Armed with this intel, on the eve of Good Friday (April 17 2025), an intelligence-led operation by the Ghana Police Service and the Forestry Commission led to the raid of six illegal mining sites linked to Akonta Mining,” the minister said during a press briefing on April 21, 2025.
According to the minister, the operation in Compartment 49, which began at 5 AM and lasted a whopping 12 hours, resulted in:
The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) marks its 50th anniversary in 2025, and its journey has been marked by significant highs and lows in regional integration, political collaboration, and economic development.
It was founded in 1975 to promote economic cooperation and development among West African countries.
Over the years, it has strived to foster peace, stability in a region that has been historically marred by political instability and under development.
West African countries, striving for stability and prosperity in a region historically burdened by colonial legacies, political instability, and underdevelopment.
As Ghana hosts the launch of the 50th anniversary celebration of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) at the Accra International Conference Centre (AICC) on Tuesday, April 22, 2025, GhanaWeb takes a look at the successes and challenges ECOWAS has faced since its inception.
Successes
Promotion of regional integration:
ECOWAS has made notable strides in facilitating the free movement of people, goods and services within its member states.
The ECOWAS Trade Liberalisation Scheme (ETLS) has helped to promote intra-regional trade and reduce dependency on external markets.
Peacekeeping and Stability
ECOWAS has been instrumental in maintaining peace in West Africa, particularly through the ECOWAS Monitoring Group (ECOMOG), which played a critical role in mediating conflicts and managing crisis in Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea Bissau in the nineties.
Economic integration
ECOWAS has created large markets that attract foreign investments and encourages specialisation along lines of comparative advantages.
It has also promoted cultural exchange among member states, enhancing regional cooperation.
It has facilitated the use of local inputs in industries and reduced foreign ownership of enterprises and also made significant investments in the continent’s energy supply, food security and human capital development.
Here are some challenges ECOWAS has faced in its journey:
Internal divisions
Despite its successes in peacekeeping, ECOWAS has sometimes struggled with internal political divisions and its ability to respond quickly and effectively to regional crises.
The failure to prevent coups in member states like Mali, Guinea, and Burkina Faso in recent years has questioned its ability to enforce democratic governance.
Economic integration challenges
The goal of economic integration has faced significant hurdles, including differences in economic policies, a lack of infrastructure, and bureaucratic inefficiencies.
The dream of a common currency, the Eco, has been delayed multiple times, with regional powers like Nigeria and Ghana unable to agree on key economic terms and conditions.
Limited impact on human rights and governance issues among member states
While ECOWAS has made some efforts to promote democracy and good governance, its influence appears limited, sparking conversations that it has not done enough to hold leaders accountable for human rights violations or for subverting democratic processes.
As it marks its 50th year, it is expected that it will do more to create a prosperous continent, tackle climate change, violent threats and regional disintegration.

At just 17 years old, Jonah Kusi-Asare is already making waves at Bayern Munich with his eye-catching performances and immense potential.
The towering forward is regarded as one of Europe’s most exciting young talents and is eligible to represent Ghana internationally.
Having earned a spot in Bayern Munich’s first-team setup, Kusi-Asare’s name has started to gain recognition, an incredible achievement for someone still in his teens.
But who is this teenage sensation being tipped as one of Europe’s next big strikers, and why has he suddenly become a topic of discussion among German football fans?
This article sheds light on Jonah Kusi-Asare’s journey, tracing his path from Sweden’s youth ranks to Bayern Munich’s elite setup.
Born on July 4, 2007, in Solna, Sweden, Kusi-Asare is the son of former Swedish-Ghanaian footballer Jones Kusi-Asare, while his mother hails from Finland.
As a result, he is eligible to represent Sweden, Ghana, and Finland at the international level.
He began his football journey in the youth setup of IF Brommapojkarna before moving to AIK in January 2023.
Just months later, on August 28, he made history as the youngest player ever to feature for AIK in Sweden’s top flight, debuting at just 16 years, 1 month, and 24 days old.
He went on to make four league appearances that season, showcasing glimpses of the talent that attracted international attention.
On February 1, 2024, Kusi-Asare took a major step in his career by signing with German giants Bayern Munich for a reported fee of €4.5 million.
Initially joining the club’s under-19 squad, he was quickly promoted to Bayern Munich II ahead of the 2024–25 season.
He made his debut for the reserve side on August 30, 2024, featuring in a 1–1 draw against DJK Vilzing in the Regionalliga Bayern.
His steady rise continued with a first-team call-up for a Bundesliga match against Mainz 05 on December 14, 2024.
Just a few weeks later, he experienced his first taste of senior action in a friendly against Red Bull Salzburg on January 6, 2025, coming off the bench to replace Michael Olise in a commanding 6–0 victory.
Kusi-Asare’s potential has drawn praise from Bayern Munich’s sporting director, Christoph Freund, who expressed his excitement about having him in the squad.
“Jonah Kusi-Asare is a young striker with enormous potential. He has all the attributes: he’s technically strong, fast, tall, very robust for his age, and an excellent finisher. We’re very pleased that he’ll be playing for FC Bayern in the future,” he said.
Although Kusi-Asare has yet to make an appearance for Sweden’s senior national team, he has represented the country at youth level, playing for the U16 and U17 teams. This means he remains eligible to represent the Black Stars.

The World Food Programme (WFP) said it is suspending aid for 650,000 malnourished women and children in Ethiopia due to a lack of funding.
The UN agency warned on Tuesday that 3.6 million people in Ethiopia overall are at risk of losing access to food aid in the coming weeks unless new financial support can urgently be sourced.
“WFP is being forced to halt treatment for 650,000 malnourished women and children in May due to insufficient funding,” the UN agency said in a statement.
The agency said it had planned to reach two million mothers and children with life-saving nutrition assistance in 2025 but will fall short due to a predicted funding shortfall of $222m between April and September.
“Cash and in-kind food assistance for up to one million refugees will stop in June if additional funding is not received,” the agency warned.
Like many aid agencies, the WFP is caught in the crosshairs of funding cuts instituted by the administration of United States President Donald Trump. Shortly after his inauguration in January, Trump signed an executive order freezing all foreign aid.
Conflict, instability and drought are key reasons why more than 10 million of Ethiopia’s 130 million people face the threat of hunger, the UN agency said.
The East African country is recovering from two years of brutal civil war between federal forces and rebels in the northern region of Tigray, which ended in November 2022 and killed at least 600,000 people.
Tensions are again mounting between longtime foes Ethiopia and Eritrea over Addis Ababa’s quest for maritime access, causing fears of yet another conflict in the Horn of Africa barely seven years after the two neighbours restored ties.
Continued violence and instability in Ethiopia’s Amhara region are also obstructing humanitarian operations, the WFP said, adding that below-average rainfall forecast through May in southeastern Ethiopia could further exacerbate conditions.
Using a proverbial statement, Asiedu Nketiah emphasized the dangers of blaming the Chief Justice during her final days in office. He suggested that anyone calling for her dismissal might even face consequences.
Speaking in an interview on Radio Gold on April 18, 2025, he stated, “When an old woman is about to die, she becomes very dangerous; anybody who would say she should die might even die before her.
Adum fire: Amoakohene assures traders of swift rebuilding plans

President John Dramani Mahama has called for renewed diplomatic engagement with the Alliance of Sahel States, following the withdrawal of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
The three countries, which formed the Alliance of Sahel States, have cited inconsistencies in ECOWAS’s operations as their reason for exiting the bloc.
However, in a bid to foster reconciliation, President Mahama extended an invitation to the breakaway nations to join the anniversary celebrations.
Speaking at the launch of ECOWAS’s 50th Anniversary in Accra on Tuesday, April 22, President Mahama described the departure of the three junta-led nations as a regrettable development, but stressed the importance of dialogue over isolation.
“The recent decision by Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger to withdraw from the ECOWAS is a regrettable development…we must respond not with isolation, recrimination, but with dialogue and the willing ability to listen and to engage,” he stated.
President Mahama emphasised the belief that unity and collaboration remain essential to achieving prosperity and stability across West Africa.
“Since assuming as president, I have prioritised diplomatic re-engagement with the Sahel region. Ghana has appointed a special envoy to engage in high level engagement with the Alliance of Sahel States. I have personally led missions to foster trust, rebuild communication channels and affirm our shared aspirations.
“These efforts affirms our believes that we have a shared destiny as a sub-region, and unity, however, difficult, remains the best part to shred prosperity and regional stability,” he stated.
