The silent crisis we can’t ignore

0

I am currently studying public health, with a particular focus on HIV and the prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT). During a recent trip to Ghana, I was struck by how little public health education appears to exist regarding HIV prevention. I engaged in conversations with several well-educated individuals, and to my surprise, many of them seemed to know very little about HIV—or even questioned whether it remained a concern in Ghana. To be honest, that shocked me.

Just last week, I came across an interview on Ghanaweb.com with the president of the Ghana HIV and AIDS Network (GHANET). He revealed that the Government of Ghana has not contributed funds to the national HIV fund in the last eight years.

This means there is virtually no government funding for HIV awareness or prevention campaigns. While organisations such as PEPFAR, WHO, and the Global Fund are still actively supporting the fight against HIV, it seems the government has taken a back seat—leaving a growing crisis unchecked. HIV is becoming a silent emergency in Ghana, and without urgent action, we risk falling even further behind the global goal of ending HIV by 2030.

What is HIV/AIDS?

HIV stands for Human Immunodeficiency Virus. It’s a virus that attacks the body’s immune system, specifically targeting white blood cells that help fight infections (WHO, 2023). When these cells are destroyed, the immune system becomes weaker, making it easier for diseases like tuberculosis, cervical cancer, and other infections to take hold.

HIV vs AIDS – What’s the Difference?

HIV is the virus itself. Over time, if left untreated, it damages the immune system by destroying white blood cells, making it hard for the body to fight off even simple infections and illnesses (NHS, 2025).AIDS, or Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome, is the most advanced stage of HIV. It’s not a virus, but a condition marked by serious, life-threatening infections and illnesses that occur when the immune system is severely weakened (WHO, 2024).

HIV in Africa and Ghana: The Numbers

HIV remains a major health issue across Africa. As of 2022, around 25.6 million people were living with HIV on the continent (WHO, 2022). That same year, there were about 380,000 AIDS-related deaths and 760,000 new HIV infections.

Ghana is not exempt from this crisis. In 2023 alone:

• 17,774 new HIV infections were recorded

• 12,480 AIDS-related deaths occurred

• About 334,095 people were living with HIV/AIDS (Ghana AIDS Commission, 2023)

Despite the hard work of the Ghana AIDS Commission, civil society organizations (CSOs), and other partners, these numbers remain deeply concerning.

Why Is HIV Still Spreading in Ghana?

To truly understand how HIV spreads, we need to look beyond biology and into the social and economic realities people face. Several factors contribute to the continued spread of HIV in Ghana:

• Poverty

• Gender inequality

• Limited access to education and healthcare

• Stigma and discrimination

• Risky sexual behaviours (such as unprotected sex or multiple partners)

• Transactional sex

These issues create an environment where the virus can spread more easily.

Ways HIV spread

HIV is mainly transmitted through certain body fluids of someone who has the virus. These fluids include:

• Blood

• Semen and pre-seminal fluid

• Vaginal and rectal fluids

• Breast milk

Common ways HIV spreads include:

• Unprotected anal or vaginal sex

• Sharing needles or syringes

• From mother to child during pregnancy, childbirth, or breastfeeding (WHO, 2024)

What Are the Signs and Symptoms of HIV?

One of the biggest challenges with HIV is that many people don’t know they have it until it’s advanced. Within 2 to 4 weeks after infection, some people experience flu-like symptoms such as:

• Fever

• Headache

• Rash

• Sore throat

(CDC, 2025)

As the virus continues to weaken the immune system, more serious symptoms can develop, including:

• Swollen lymph nodes

• Weight loss

• Persistent diarrhoea

• Ongoing fever and cough

If left untreated, HIV can lead to serious illnesses like tuberculosis, cryptococcal meningitis, severe bacterial infections, and certain cancers such as lymphoma and Kaposi’s sarcoma (WHO, 2024).

Preventing HIV: The Role of PrEP and PEP

Two powerful tools in the fight against HIV are PrEP (Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis) and PEP (Post-Exposure Prophylaxis).

PrEP is a preventive measure for people who are HIV-negative but at high risk of exposure. It involves taking a daily pill that contains antiretroviral medications. When taken consistently, PrEP can reduce the risk of getting HIV from sex by about 99%, and by at least 74% for people who inject drugs (Novus, 2024). It’s especially useful for people who:

• Have multiple sexual partners

• Don’t always use condoms in risky sexual behaviours

• Share needles or injection equipment

PEP, on the other hand, is an emergency option. It’s meant for people who may have been exposed to HIV (for example, through unprotected sex, needle-sharing, or sexual assault). PEP must be started within 72 hours after exposure—and the sooner, the better. It involves taking antiretroviral medicine for 28 days (CDC, 2022; CDC, 2024). While it’s not 100% effective, it can significantly reduce the risk of HIV if taken properly.

Call to Action: Silence is Deadly — Let’s Talk About HIV Now!

Ghana can no longer afford to ignore the silent crisis of HIV. With over 17,000 new infections and 12,000 AIDS-related deaths in 2023 alone, the time for awareness, education, and government accountability is now.

• The government of Ghana urgently needs to reinvest in the National HIV Fund and commit to sustained funding for public education, prevention programs, and access to life-saving treatment.

• Healthcare professionals and educators to integrate HIV education into schools, community outreach, and antenatal care — especially around PMTCT.

• Media platforms to break the silence and bring HIV conversations back into the public spotlight.

• Youth, students, and community leaders to champion open, stigma-free discussions and encourage routine HIV testing and prevention practices like PrEP and PEP.

Conclusion

HIV in Ghana is a growing yet overlooked crisis—one that demands immediate attention. Despite global progress, Ghana’s lack of government support and public awareness threatens to undo years of hard-won gains. We cannot afford silence or complacency. By investing in education, prevention, and open dialogue, we can turn the tide. The fight against HIV is far from over—but with collective action, it is a fight we can still win.

HIV is not gone. But together, we can stop it. Speak up. Get tested. Demand action.

Ghana’s finance minister, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson has expressed deep concern over the massive financial burden facing the country’s energy sector, revealing that the government will need to pay a staggering $1.1 billion in 2025 to settle obligations to ENI alone.

According to the him, these payments cover monthly invoices, LC replenishments, and outstanding arrears, a situation he attributes to years of neglect in the sector.

“For far too long, critical obligations were pushed aside, leaving us with a broken system that now demands urgent and painful corrections,” he stated in a post on X following a meeting with officials from ENI on March 25, 2025.

He criticised the previous administration for failing to tackle the growing debts, stating that their inaction allowed liabilities to pile up, ultimately placing the sector under immense financial strain.

The minister further highlighted the monthly energy cost crisis, revealing that Ghana spends GH¢2.5 billion on energy, with fuel and power generation alone consuming GH¢1.9 billion. However, the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) collects only GH¢1.3 billion, creating a GH¢1.2 billion shortfall every month.

During the meeting with ENI officials, the minister acknowledged the difficult financial position but emphasised the government’s commitment to meeting its obligations.

“I made it clear to them that we have no choice but to divert funds that could have been used for development, healthcare, and education to pay for commitments that should have been honored years ago,” he wrote.

Despite the financial strain, the finance minister assured that the government is determined to stabilize the sector, clear inherited debts, and implement reforms to ensure Ghana’s energy future is no longer crippled by past financial mismanagement.

A man should have multiple partners

Reggae and Dancehall artiste, Lawrence Senyo Adiase well known as DSL Reggae and Dancehall artiste, Lawrence Senyo Adiase well known as DSL

Reggae and Dancehall artiste, Lawrence Senyo Adiase, popularly known as DSL, has shared his opinion on relationships, contending that men should not limit themselves to one lady.

Speaking on a podcast, hosted by Zeinat Issahak, DSL discussed about the complexities of relationships, touching on both positive and toxic aspects.

Reflecting on personal experiences and those of others, the Lynx Entertainment signee made it clear that he would never advise his future son to commit to only one woman.

“If I have a son, based on what I’ve seen and experienced in relationship, the heartbreaks, the mental breakdowns, even cases where people have lost their lives over love, I will never tell him, ‘Kwame, Kwesi, Kofi, one woman is enough for you.’ No, one woman is not enough for him,” he stated.

DSL emphasised on why he holds this belief, pointing out that love can often be cruel.

He noted that those who dedicate themselves entirely to one partner frequently end up disappointed and emotionally shattered.

“When you put your whole heart and mind into one person, they don’t always value it. You can sacrifice everything for them, thinking you are building something meaningful, only to be left heartbroken in the end,” he explained.

He also emphasised how individuals, after giving their all in a relationship, are often left emotionally drained, struggling to recover from betrayal or neglect.

DSL quickly clarified, though, that he is not endorsing promiscuity or careless behaviour.

Rather, he emphasised that his position is based on personal experiences and lessons learned from seeing the hard realities of relationships.

“I am not saying people should just go around sleeping with multiple partners. That’s not my point. But based on what I’ve seen and experienced, I wouldn’t advise anyone to invest everything into just one relationship. It’s dangerous emotionally,” he claimed.

Low testosterone levels affect 8 in 10 men

0

Health expert, Dr Abigail Gasu Acheampong Health expert, Dr Abigail Gasu Acheampong

A staggering 80% of men suffer from low testosterone levels, according to Dr Abigail Gasu Acheampong, a leading health expert.

In an exclusive interview with GhanaWeb, Dr Abigail attributed this alarming trend to various lifestyles and environmental factors.

“The over-use of plastics is a significant contributor to low testosterone levels,” she indicated.

She also explained that plastics emit dangerous chemicals into water and food, making it dangerous to the body, thereby reducing testosterone levels.

In addition to plastics, Dr Abigail cited inadequate sleep, poor diet, smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, and diabetes as other causes of low testosterone levels.

She also noted that testosterone levels naturally decline after age 50, similar to menopause in women.

To address low testosterone, she said some men opt for enhancement treatments.

However, Dr Abigail advised men to consult qualified health practitioners for guidance on safe and effective treatments.

Dr Abigail emphasised the importance of adopting healthy habits to maintain optimal testosterone levels.

She recommended that men prioritise sleep, exercise regularly, eat a balanced diet, and avoid plastics. By taking these proactive steps, men can help maintain their testosterone levels and overall well-being.

Over 1,300 ECG containers missing at Tema Port – Investigative report reveals

0

ECG containers missing at Tema Port ECG containers missing at Tema Port

An investigative report has revealed that over 1,300 containers belonging to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), which were supposed to be cleared at Tema Port, cannot be accounted for.

According to the Chairman of the investigative committee, Professor Innocent Senyo Acquah, ECG initially claimed to have 2,491 uncleared containers containing cables and other electrical equipment.

However, an independent audit at the port found only 1,134 containers, leaving 1,347 missing.

The findings of the report have been presented to the Minister of Energy and Green Transition, Dr. John Abdulai Jinapor.

Professor Acquah disclosed that before 2022, ECG had a dedicated fund that received weekly allocations for clearing containers. However, the ECG board discontinued the practice, citing a lack of funds.

During this period, ECG awarded contracts to two firms to clear the containers, with one of the firms receiving pre-financing from ECG.

The committee’s investigation revealed that one of these companies lacked the necessary license to undertake the contract, raising concerns over procurement irregularities.

Additionally, the report found that ECG’s Procurement Directorate had been merged with its Housing and Estate Unit.

A background check on the Director of Procurement further revealed that he had no prior experience in procurement and was not a member of any professional procurement body.

Receiving the report, the Minister of Energy, Dr. John Jinapor described the findings as alarming and assured that a thorough investigation would be conducted in collaboration with the Attorney General and the Police.

“The over 1,300 containers cannot vanish into thin air. We will work with the Attorney General and the Police to ensure that those responsible are brought to book and that the containers or their monetary value are retrieved,” he stated.

The minister also announced that ECG’s Procurement Unit will be decoupled within a week and pledged to introduce swift and far-reaching reforms to enhance procurement processes at the company.

“It cannot be business as usual. We are not targeting anybody, but we will ensure that whoever is responsible is held accountable,” he added.

The investigation was launched following the discovery of the uncleared containers during the minister’s visit to the port in January 2025.

A five-member committee was tasked with:

• Reviewing ECG’s procurement practices

• Assessing the cost of the missing containers

• Determining liabilities, which have been estimated at GH¢1.5 billion

With the findings now public, the government is expected to take decisive action to restore accountability and efficiency in ECG’s procurement and operations.

Black Stars to play four-nation tournament in England

0

The Chairman of the Black Stars Management Committee, Dr. Randy Abbey, has disclosed that the team will play a four-nation tournament in June 2025.

He explained that the friendly matches will serve as an opportunity for the technical team to keep the team in good shape and give other players opportunities.

Speaking in an interview with 3Sports, Dr. Abbey noted that the four-nation tournament will take place in England in June 2025, before the resumption of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers in September 2025.

“Fortunately, the technical team and management will have the opportunity to further work on the team because, in June, we don’t have qualifiers. So, we’re playing a four-nation friendly in England. And I’m sure it will be an opportunity for the coaches to do some further work on the team.

“We’re hoping that some of the players who are injured will also be back and will be able to get an opportunity to play at least two games before September,” he said.

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) lauded the team for their victories against Chad and Madagascar.

“I can also appreciate why people were a bit apprehensive about the game. This is a team that had gone six games without a win in the AFCON qualifiers. After Chad, they said, ‘Oh, well, this is just Chad.’

“If you look at Madagascar’s previous performance, having gone away to win 4-1 against one of the teams that was also doing quite well in the group, it was a difficult game. But the entire team was determined to make up for not qualifying for the AFCON,” he added.

After six matches played in the World Cup qualifiers, Ghana lead Group I with 15 points, followed by Madagascar with 10 points, while Mali lie in third with 9 points.

US cuts to HIV aid will cost millions of lives

0

UNAids Executive Director Winnie Byanyima UNAids Executive Director Winnie Byanyima

US funding cuts will lead to an additional 2,000 new HIV infections each day and over six million further deaths over the next four years, the UNAids chief has warned.

It would mark a stark reversal in the global fight against HIV, which has seen the number of deaths from the disease decrease from more than two million in 2004 to 600,000 in 2023, the most recent year for which figures are available.

UNAids Executive Director Winnie Byanyima said the US government’s decision to pause foreign aid – which included funding for HIV programmes – was already having devastating consequences.

She called on the US to reverse the cuts immediately, warning women and girls were being hit particularly hard.

US President Donald Trump announced the pause on foreign aid, for an initial 90 days, on his first day in office in January as part of a review into government spending. The majority of the US Agency for International Development’s (USAID) programmes have since been terminated.

Many US-financed HIV treatment and prevention programmes received stop work orders, leading to the closure of mother and baby clinics in Africa, and severe shortages of life saving anti-retroviral (ARV) medicines.

Ms Byanyima said she feared a return to the 1990s, when HIV medication was scarcely available in poorer countries, and infections and deaths soared.

The US has for years been the single biggest funder of HIV treatment and prevention, and Ms Byanima thanked Washington for its generosity and humanity.

She added it was “reasonable” for the US “to want to reduce its funding – over time”, but said the “sudden withdrawal of lifesaving support [was] having a devastating impact”.

There has been no sign that Washington is listening to appeals to change course.

Traditional aid donors in Europe also plan funding cuts, and UNAids – the joint UN agency which combats HIV – has had no indication that other countries might step in to fill the gap left by the US.

Speaking in Geneva on Monday, Ms Byanyima described the case of Juliana, a young woman in Kenya living with HIV. She worked for a US-funded programme that supported new mothers to access treatment to ensure their babies did not develop the disease.

With the programme suspended, Ms Byanyima said Juliana was not only out of work but, because she was still breastfeeding her youngest child, she also feared losing the treatment she needed.

Previously, the World Health Organization (WHO) said eight countries – Nigeria, Kenya, Lesotho, South Sudan, Burkina Faso, Mali, Haiti and Ukraine – could soon run out of HIV drugs after the US funding pause.

WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus warned that disruption to HIV programmes “could undo 20 years of progress”.

In February, South Africa’s leading Aids lobby group, the Treatment Action Campaign (TAC), warned the country could see a return to when HIV patients struggled to access necessary services for their treatment.

“We can’t afford to die, we can’t afford to go back to those years where we were suffering with access to services, especially for people living with HIV treatment,” said TAC chair Sibongile Tshabalala.

Ms Byanyima also proposed a deal to the Trump administration, offering an opportunity to market a new US-developed ARV to millions of people.

Lenacapavir, made by US company Gilead, is given by injection every six months, with UNAids believing 10 million people could benefit from it.

The profits and jobs resulting from such a deal would be hugely beneficial to the US, Ms Byanyima added.

UNAids is one of a number of UN agencies facing funding cuts.

The UN Refugee Agency has suggested it may have to lose 6,000 jobs, while Unicef has warned that progress to reduce child mortality is threatened, and the World Food Programme has had to cut rations in famine threatened regions.

Ghana Post: Sam George Terminates 100 Staff Appointments

0

The Minister for Communications, Digital Technology, and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, has announced the termination of about 100 staff members of Ghana Post, citing irregularities in their recruitment process.

Speaking to the media, the minister explained the challenges he has encountered upon assuming office, which includes an inflated workforce.

He said, “If you are a minister and you take over a ministry that has 3,117 staff in the ministry and its agencies and 600 were recruited after December 7, you cannot expect me to come and inherit such a mess, and so the rationalisation is ongoing”.

He further explained that the decision is part of an ongoing rationalisation effort aimed at streamlining operations within the ministry and its agencies.

The minister also revealed that the latest terminations are targeted at staff recruited after the December 7 elections, a time he described as problematic for proper hiring practices.

“Today, I have authorised a termination of a few more at Ghana Post, almost 100 that were done post-election,” he stated.

The minister highlighted his commitment to ensuring efficiency and accountability within the ministry, stating that the rationalisation process would continue in the sector.

Otumfuo, other traditional leaders will need permission from Sammy Gyamfi to own Gold — Goldbod Act

0

Reports from GhanaToday indicate that a new proposal under the Goldbod Act will require Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, along with other traditional leaders, to seek permission from Sammy Gyamfi before they can own gold. This significant development has sparked discussions regarding the implications for traditional authority and gold ownership in the country.

The proposed Goldbod Act includes stringent regulations surrounding the hoarding of gold. According to Section 69 of the act, individuals are prohibited from hoarding gold without a license issued by the Gold Board. Violators of this regulation face severe penalties, including fines ranging from two hundred thousand to five hundred thousand penalty units, or imprisonment for a term of five to ten years, or both.

Additionally, the act stipulates that if a body corporate commits an offence under this legislation, every director, manager, officer, and shareholder responsible for the operations of that body will also be held accountable. They will need to demonstrate that they exercised due diligence to avoid the commission of the offence.

Hoarding of gold.

69. (1) A person shall not, without lawful authority, hoard gold without licence issued by the Gold Board.

‘We are suffering, you are stealing’ – Edem reacts to corruption allegations against Adu-Boahene

0

Edem and Kwabena Adu-Boahene Edem and Kwabena Adu-Boahene

Renowned Ghanaian rapper Edem has expressed astonishment following revelations by the Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Dr. Dominic Ayine, regarding some alleged corruption involving officials from the previous government.

During a press briefing on March 24, 2025, Dr. Ayine disclosed that Kwabena Adu-Boahene, the former Director-General of the National Signals Bureau (NSB), has been arrested for allegedly diverting $7 million meant for a cybersecurity defence system, among others.

But the issue, which has since garnered a wave of reactions on social media, has also caught Edem’s attention.

The rapper, who has been vocal on national issues, expressed dismay on X, lamenting how life has been difficult for ordinary Ghanaians while politicians, on the other hand, are busy stealing.

“We dey suffer, we dey suffer… See the stealing you dey steal,” he wrote.

His comment resonated with many Ghanaians on social media who were equally shocked by the findings.

Meanwhile, Adu-Boahene’s legal team has responded to the accusations.

They have strongly criticised Attorney-General Dr. Dominic Ayine for allegedly conducting what they describe as a media trial against their client instead of following due legal processes.

Samuel Atta Akyea, a legal representative of Adu-Boahene, has accused the Attorney-General of attempting to sway public opinion by prosecuting the case and potentially prejudicing the judicial process.

He has also condemned the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) for detaining Adu-Boahene and his wife without granting bail or full legal representation, labelling these actions as clear violations of their constitutional rights.

Details emerge of how FIC, not GRA froze Richard Nii-Armah Quaye’s accounts

Ghanaian business mogul Richard Nii-Armah Quaye Ghanaian business mogul Richard Nii-Armah Quaye

Multiple reports emerged on Monday, March 24, 2025, that the accounts of Ghanaian business mogul Richard Nii-Armah Quaye have been frozen by the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) following investigations into his tax compliance.

The reports indicated that the alleged freezing of the accounts was due to inconsistencies in his tax payment records.

GhanaWeb, however, has learned that the freezing of the accounts was not ordered by the Ghana Revenue Authority but rather by the state’s leading anti-money laundering institution, the Financial Intelligence Centre (FIC).

Sources at the FIC told GhanaWeb that the directive to freeze the bank accounts of the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Bills Micro-Credit was issued on Friday, March 22, 2025.

On Monday, March 24, 2025, Richard Nii-Armah, in the presence of his legal team and other officials was extensively interrogated by officials of the FIC and the Bank of Ghana.

GhanaWeb sources indicate that the freezing of the accounts of the man, who has interests in over 29 companies, does not imply any wrongdoing on his part but forms part of the FIC’s investigation of him which has been ongoing for months.

Richard Nii-Armah Quaye was the focus of a massive birthday party on Saturday, March 22, 2025.

Richard Quaye, whose microfinance institution serves numerous Ghanaian businesses, has not publicly commented on the ongoing investigation.

NITA left with only GH¢25.08 at BoG, owes GH¢813 million debt

Minister of Communications, Digital Technology, and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George Minister of Communications, Digital Technology, and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George

The Minister of Communications, Digital Technology, and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, has disclosed that the National Information Technology Agency (NITA) has only GH¢25.08 in its account at the Bank of Ghana, despite having accumulated a debt exceeding GH¢813 million.

According to him, this raises serious concerns about the agency’s ability to fulfill its financial obligations and sustain its operations, especially as it plays a crucial role in the country’s digital infrastructure and innovation initiatives.

Addressing journalists on Monday, March 24, 2025, Sam George described the situation as an alarming case of state capture, emphasising the financial struggles facing NITA.

He stated, “The National Information Technology Agency (NITA), for example, has 25 Ghana cedis, 8 pesewas as its bank balance at the Bank of Ghana. Meanwhile, the agency owes GH¢813,486,505.89. This is the ministry we took over.”

He further revealed that NITA has been locked into a contractual agreement with a third-party vendor, whom he has since summoned for questioning.

“NITA has a certain contract arrangement with a third-party vendor. I have summoned that third-party vendor to appear before me tomorrow because I do not understand how all the revenue coming to NITA is being redirected. The previous administration signed a contract that diverts all of these funds, giving them to a third party,” the minister said.

The Black Stars continued their winning run in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, defeating Madagascar 3-0 on Monday, March 24, 2025, at the Mimoun Al Arsi Stadium in Morocco.

A brace from Thomas Partey and a goal from Mohammed Kudus were enough as the Black Stars extended their points tally to 15, with four games remaining.

Despite their dominant display, what truly stood out was the breathtaking buildup to the third goal, a moment of pure teamwork and precision.

The goal showcased incredible team chemistry, typified by quick, precise, and effortless passing sequences. The Black Stars completed up to fifteen passes before Kudus put the ball into the back of the net.

There were series of one-touch passes that carved through the Madagascar team, leaving them chasing shadows.

Jordan Ayew’s drive with the ball and a final sublime pass set Kudus up brilliantly, allowing him to slot home past the onrushing goalkeeper.

South Sudan on brink of renewed civil war, UN warns

0

South Sudan's President Salva Kiir, right, and Vice President Riek Machar, left, agreed to a peace South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir, right, and Vice President Riek Machar, left, agreed to a peace

South Sudan is on the brink of a renewed civil war as violence between rival factions escalates, the United Nations has warned.

The situation in the country is “dire” said Nicholas Haysom, head of the UN Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), late on Monday, as tension between forces allied with President Salva Kiir and those of Vice President Riek Machar continues to build.

Efforts to negotiate a peace deal would only be possible if Kiir and Machar were able to “put the interests of their people ahead of their own,” the UN official noted, warning that disinformation and hate speech are stirring ethnic hatred and provoking increasing violence that has displaced tens of thousands.

South Sudan, the world’s youngest country, fell into a bloody civil war soon after gaining independence in 2011, as forces aligned with Kiir, an ethnic Dinka, fought those loyal to Machar, an ethnic Nuer.

The conflict killed more than 40,000 people before a 2018 peace deal saw the pair form a government of national unity. However, tension has flared once more.

A group of fighters known as the White Army, believed to be allied to Machar, overran a military base in Nasir County, the northeastern Upper Nile state, earlier in March.

In response, South Sudanese soldiers surrounded Machar’s home in the capital, Juba, and arrested several of his allies. Meanwhile, the military has also been also targeting communities across the Upper Nile with aerial strikes, Haysom said.

“These indiscriminate attacks on civilians are causing significant casualties and horrific injuries, especially burns,” the UN official reported, adding that an estimated 63,000 people have been displaced due to the fighting.

“Given this grim situation, we are left with no other conclusion but to assess that South Sudan is teetering on the edge of a relapse into civil war,” he said.

The UN official cautioned that Kiir and Machar have little trust that the other will abide by the terms of the peace deal.

An election, which was supposed to be held in 2023, was already postponed twice, and is now not scheduled until 2026.

“Rampant misinformation, disinformation and hate speech are also ratcheting up tensions and driving ethnic divisions, and fear,” Haysom concluded.

UNMISS is working to prevent a new civil war and is engaging in “intense shuttle diplomacy” with regional partners, including the African Union, he noted.

Former Vice President visits Adum Blue Light fire disaster scene

By Muyid Deen Suleman/Samuel Ofori Boateng

Kumasi March 25, GNA – Former Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia on Tuesday, March 25, 2025, paid a working visit to the Adum Blue Light fire disaster scene to sympathise with the affected traders.

Dr Bawumia, who was accompanied by some Members of Parliament, former government appointees and some leading members of the NPP, donated an amount of GH¢200,000.00 and 1,000 bags of cement to support the recovery efforts of the traders.

The fire, which occurred on Friday, March 21, 2025, ravaged the entire ‘Blue Light’ market enclave in the central business district of Kumasi, destroying merchandize worth millions of Ghana cedis and rendered hundreds of traders jobless and plunged them into huge financial loses.

The cause of the fire outbreak is yet to be but some of the affected traders are pointing accusing fingers on the persistent power fluctuations in the area prior to the outbreak.

The Ashanti Regional Security Council had already ordered investigations into the horrific fire disaster in the recent history of Kumasi.

The President, Mr John Dramani Mahama, had already visited the victims and instructed the National Disaster Management Organization to organize relief items to support the victims.

The NADMO and personnel of the Ghana National Fire Service and other security agencies are still working to clear the debris to pave the way for the reconstruction of the market.

While the government wants to clear the area and prepare it for the construction of a modern market, the affected traders are calling on the government to allow them to reconstruct the market by themselves.

The traders argue that it would take a longer time for the government to complete the construction project, and the delay could hugely impact on their livelihoods.

Again, most of them would not be able to afford the rent if the government constructed the market through a private developer.

Dr Bawumia, addressing the traders, urged them to exercise restraint and wait for the investigative report to know the actual cause of the disaster.

In a related development, a delegation from the Kumasi traditional council had also visited the scene to assess the situation and report to the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

Members of the Believers Worship Center, popularly known as the ‘Philadelphia Movement,’ have sparked online reactions after unveiling a sculpture of their leader, Prophet Stephen Adom Kyei-Duah.

In a video circulating on social media, some church members, dressed in all-white outfits, were seen unveiling the statue as a symbol of their admiration for the Prophet.

Reports have stated that the sculpture is meant to honour his significant contributions, not only to his church members but to Ghanaians as a whole.

In the video, the artwork was designed to strikingly resemble the popular pastor, even down to the specific attire he is frequently seen wearing.

The unveiling of the sculpture has since sparked mixed reactions among netizens.

While some are praising the congregants for honouring their spiritual leader, others are criticising them for going against biblical teachings and idolizing their preacher.

This is not the first time a statue or image has been created in honour of the Believers Worship Center’s General Overseer.

His members revere him to the extent that, in an earlier instance, Kumawood actor LilWin, who is also a member of the church, once stated that Prophet Kyei-Duah is the reincarnation of Jesus Christ.

Name the lawmaker ‘fingered’ in NSS scandal – MFWA boss challenges AG

Sulemana Braimah, Executive Director of the Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA) Sulemana Braimah, Executive Director of the Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA)

Sulemana Braimah, Executive Director of the Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA), has demanded that the Attorney General, Dr Dominic Akuritinga Ayine, names the parliamentarian who was allegedly paid to kill a story in relation to the National Service Scheme (NSS) ghost names scandal.

He cited transparency and protection of the reputation of Parliament as reasons for his demand.

“We call on the Attorney General (AG) to name the said MP to whom money was given to kill the story. Doing so will be in the interest of transparency and also to protect the reputation of Parliament,” the Facebook post by Sulemana Braimah read.

Dominic Ayine had indicated, during his press briefing on March 24, 25, that monies were allegedly paid by the Chief Executive Officer and other officials of the National Service Authority (NSA) to a Member of Parliament to influence the media to kill the NSS ghost names investigations.

Dr Ayine further disclosed that eight suspects had been interrogated and were cooperating with investigations on the National Service Scheme scandal.

“Because these matters are still under investigation, I can confirm that the investigation will conclude in the National Service and the Sky Train Scandal by the middle of April for the prosecution to begin.

“With the National Service Scandal, eight suspects have been interrogated and a good number of them have started singing. We now have evidence of payments that were made into the accounts of the top executives of the National Service by private vendors of the scheme,” he said.

The AG added that “We also have evidence that in November 2024, the CEO of the NSS and others paid a Ghanaian Member of Parliament to kill the story in the media and to defend them.”

Managers of AirtelTigo are ‘enemies of the state’

Minister of Communications, Digital Technology, and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George Minister of Communications, Digital Technology, and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George

The Minister of Communications, Digital Technology, and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, has described the managers of AirtelTigo as “enemies of the state” for selling the telecommunications company.

He raised concerns over the decision to sell AirtelTigo, which is burdened with a GH¢3.5 billion debt, for a token price of just one dollar.

Speaking to journalists in Parliament on Monday, March 24, 2025 the Minister criticised the patriotism of those who oversaw the sale, citing the company’s staggering financial liabilities.

“Those who managed the AirtelTigo process are enemies of the state and individuals who have no sense of patriotism. For anybody to have told us that they bought AirtelTigo for one dollar, and now that we have taken over the ministry, ATC (American Tower Company), just one of the company’s creditors, has presented us with a bill of GH¢1.5 billion,” he stated.

He further revealed that discussions with the American Embassy highlighted the severity of AirtelTigo’s financial situation.

“The American Embassy, along with their team, was in my office, and one of the major issues raised was the indebtedness to ATC. The debt sitting on AirtelTigo’s books exceeds GH¢3.5 billion,” he disclosed.

Sam George’s remarks add to the growing debate over the transparency and financial implications of the AirtelTigo transaction.

Stick to the yellow jersey

Many Ghanaians on social media have suggested that the Black Stars maintain the yellow kits as their primary kit for games.

They argue that the yellow kits worn in the last two games of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers resonate with the Ghanaian spirit and bring the team some positive luck.

The assertion follows Ghana’s 3-0 win over Madagascar on Monday, March 24 at the Al Hoceima Grand Stadium.

Some users on X (formerly Twitter) lauded the players for their performance, while others singled out certain players as outstanding performers.

Jordan Ayew and Thomas Partey received enormous praise for playing key roles in the win. Ayew assisted all three goals while Partey netted a brace.

Some fans linked the win to former players Asamoah Gyan and Stephen Appiah, highlighting their positive impact after getting closer to the current squad.

The victory over Madagascar sends the Black Stars to the top of Group I with 15 points, sitting five points above second-place Madagascar with four matches remaining in the World Cup qualifiers.

Are Ethiopia and Eritrea hurtling towards war?

0

Tensions are again mounting between longtime foes Ethiopia and Eritrea over Addis Ababa’s quest for maritime access, causing fears of yet another conflict in the Horn of Africa barely seven years after the two neighbours restored ties.

Eritrea has, in recent months, called for young people to sign up for the army, while Ethiopia has reportedly deployed troops to joint border areas. Analysts say those moves could potentially see the two armies come face to face in a conflict.

Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, in a recent statement on X, ruled out conflict with Eritrea to gain access to the Red Sea. Abiy, who has previously said gaining access to the Red Sea was “an existential issue”, stressed that his country wanted to achieve it “peacefully via dialogue”.

But Eritrea has, on its part, struck a harsher tone, and called Ethiopia “misguided” over border tensions.

Last September, Ethiopian Airlines, the country’s national carrier, was forced to suspend flights to Eritrea after it received a ban notice from Asmara and its bank accounts there were frozen. Officials of the airline said no reasons were given for the ban.

Then, in February, an Eritrean rights group, Human Rights Concern Eritrea (HRCE) reported that the Eritrean government was issuing military mobilisation directives to citizens below 60 years old, and was calling up reservists. The group said the announcements represented forced conscription policies in the authoritarian-led country.

“This sudden and unprecedented mobilisation has sent shockwaves through Eritrean society, as it is assumed that the war could be with neighbouring Ethiopia,” HRCE said in its report.

“We call on the United Nations, the African Union, and all concerned governments to intervene and pressure the Eritrean and Ethiopian governments to cease these actions, respect the rights of their citizens, and halt any escalation towards war.”

Here’s what to know about the two countries’ historically fraught relationship, and why tensions are building again:

Similarly, according to reporting by the Reuters news agency, Ethiopia deployed troops and tanks on its northern borders with Eritrea early in March. Officials did not give any reasons for the troop build-up there.

Conflict in Ethiopia’s northern region of Tigray has also signalled escalating hostilities between the neighbouring countries. Political disputes in Tigray, which borders Eritrea, have seen the government there splinter, with one faction reportedly allying with Eritrea.

The semiautonomous Tigray region was the epicentre of a civil war that lasted from 2020 to 2022, and that created a humanitarian crisis that saw hundreds of thousands killed, and about three million internally displaced. It was a result of the Ethiopian government’s attempts to put down a rebellion by the Tigrayan governing party – the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF). Addis Ababa accused the TPLF of trying to dominate the country’s federal politics, while the TPLF saw the central government as controlling too much power.

Eritrean forces collaborated with Ethiopian troops during the Tigray war, with all sides being accused of severe human rights violations. However, when a peace deal – the Pretoria Peace Agreement – was signed in November 2022 between the Ethiopian federal government and the rebel regional government, Eritrea was not invited to the negotiations. Some analysts believe officials in Eritrea felt slighted, and that the move drove a wedge between the two governments.

The fragile peace achieved in Tigray has since come apart as an interim TPLF administration installed after the war split into two factions this year.

A dissident faction accuses the interim TPLF government, led by Getachew Reda, of failing to uphold the peace deal agreements, such as returning displaced people to their homes, and of “selling out” Tigrayan interests in its alliance with the federal authorities. In the latest offensives last week, the breakaway faction, under TPLF chairman Debretsion Gebremichael, seized the major Tigrayan towns of Adigrat and Adi-Gudem amid reports of civilian displacements and injuries. The group also reportedly took over the main radio station in Mekelle, the regional capital.

The breakaway faction is also accused of collaborating with Eritrea, although the government in Asmara denies any links with dissident TPLF members.

In a statement on Wednesday, the interim TPLF administration sought help from the federal government in Addis Ababa, saying “the region may be on the brink of another crisis”.

General Tsadkan Gebretensae, a vice president in the interim administration in Ethiopia’s Tigray region, writing recently in the Africa Report, an Africa-focused magazine, echoed those thoughts.

“At any moment, war between Ethiopia and Eritrea could break out,” he wrote.

Eritrea was an Italian colony until 1951, when it fell under British control and became an autonomous part of Ethiopia. In 1962, Ethiopia sought to annex Eritrea, but rebel forces, led by leader Isaias Afwerki, resisted in an armed struggle and secured independence in 1993.

In 1998, clashes broke out over disputed border territories, resulting in a two-year war. An estimated 80,000 people were killed, and the conflict broke apart families across borders as all diplomatic ties and interstate communication – transport, phone, and postal networks – were cut. In 2000, a UN-backed peace deal granted the disputed territories to Eritrea, but the deal was never implemented.

When Abiy became prime minister in 2018, he immediately moved to end the tensions and normalise diplomatic relations with Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki, who has ruled since 1993.

“We will demolish the wall and, with love, build a bridge between the two countries,” Abiy had said during his historic trip to Asmara after decades of strife.

Soon, communication links were re-established and many families reunited. Flights also commenced between the capital cities of Addis Ababa and Asmara.

However, analysts say Eritrea, following its involvement in the Tigray war, was unhappy about being excluded from the peace negotiations. The TPLF main faction and Eritrea remain deeply hostile towards each other, and some reports reveal that Eritrean forces have not fully withdrawn from parts of Tigray, despite the war being over. There is speculation that both countries could turn Tigray into a proxy battlefield.

Abiy’s ambitions to seek direct sea access for landlocked Ethiopia have also contributed to the tensions. Addis Ababa’s access to the port was severed after Eritrea declared independence. Since then, the Red Sea port of Djibouti has been the main trade conduit for Ethiopia, but it is costly – about $1bn annually.

In recent years, Abiy has repeated that Ethiopia has a right to sea access, words that officials in Asmara take as a declaration of territorial conflict with Eritrea, which lies on the Red Sea and took all of Ethiopia’s sea access with it upon independence. Some say Abiy is eyeing the port of Assab, one of Eritrea’s two ports.

In a press briefing last week, Eritrea’s Foreign Minister Osman Saleh scolded Ethiopia for its rhetoric and denied preparing for a war.

“Eritrea is perplexed by Ethiopia’s misguided and outdated ambitions for maritime access and naval base through diplomacy or military force,” Saleh said. “In this respect, Eritrea urges the international community and its relevant bodies to put pressure on Ethiopia to respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of its neighbours.”

Ethiopia has also angered Somalia, its neighbour to the east, with those declarations. After Ethiopia signed a port deal with autonomous, coastal Somaliland, Somalia, which sees Somaliland as one of its regions, cut off diplomatic ties with Addis Ababa.

In what appeared to be retaliation and, perhaps, taking sides, Eritrea signed a security agreement with Somalia and Egypt last October. Ethiopia has also fallen out with Egypt over issues related to shared access to the Nile River.

Amid fears of another conflict, residents in Tigray are queueing at banks to withdraw cash, some hoping to leave the region for Addis Ababa or neighbouring countries, according to reporting by the United Kingdom’s Guardian newspaper. Government forces are also patrolling heavily and conducting ID checks.

Abiy, in a post on X, sought to allay fears. He assured that Ethiopia would not go to war with Eritrea but would seek a peaceful dialogue to resolve the issues.

“Ethiopia does not have any intention of engaging in conflict with Eritrea for the purpose of gaining access to the sea,” Abiy said on Thursday, according to a post by his office on X.

Eritrea has not responded to Abiy’s statement. Earlier, Osman Saleh, the country’s foreign minister, denied allegations of Eritrean troops’ presence on the ground in Ethiopia.

This week, Saleh also met Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi in Cairo to discuss “the security of the Red Sea” as Asmara appears set to continue parlaying with stronger rivals of Ethiopia.

Meanwhile, the African Union, the European Union, and the United States have called for a de-escalation of hostilities. Writing in the US magazine Foreign Policy last week, Payton Knopf and Alexander Rondos, former US and EU special envoys to the region, described the developments as “dry tinder waiting for a match that could ignite an interstate war between Ethiopia and Eritrea”.

‘All you know is persecution instead of focusing on Ghanaians’ welfare – Afenyo-Markin to gov’t

0

The Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has accused the Mahama government of prioritising political persecution over governance, insisting that its actions reflect a deliberate agenda to target opponents.

Speaking after the debate on the 2025 Budget Statement on Tuesday, 25 March, Afenyo-Markin criticised the government’s approach to law enforcement, arguing that it is motivated by vendetta rather than due process.

“All you know is persecution. Instead of focusing on the economy and the welfare of Ghanaians, you have chosen to hunt down political opponents,” he stated.

He further contended that the government’s handling of legal matters against former officials is characterised by bias and a disregard for fairness.

“Justice must be pursued without malice or political interference. What we are witnessing is a clear attempt to weaponise state institutions against those who disagree with the government,” Afenyo-Markin asserted.

The Minority leader urged the government to prioritise policies that address the pressing economic challenges facing Ghanaians instead of engaging in divisive political tactics.

He warned that such an approach would only deepen the country’s political tensions and undermine democratic principles.

Govt Falls Short Of T-Bills Target By GH¢2.8bn

0

Dr Cassiel Ato Forson

For the first time this year, the government has fallen short of its Treasury bill target, missing it by GH¢2.8 billion.

Data from the Bank of Ghana (BoG) shows that the government aimed to raise GH¢6.14 billion from short-term instruments but received bids totaling GH¢3.32 billion, representing a 45% undersubscription.

Despite the shortfall, authorities rejected GH¢1.67 billion in bids. A breakdown of the auction results reveals that out of GH¢3.6 billion tendered for the 91-day Treasury bill, GH¢2.33 billion was accepted.

The 182-day bill attracted GH¢741 million in bids, with GH¢574 million accepted. For the 364-day bill, GH¢622 million was tendered, but only GH¢406 million was accepted.

Meanwhile, interest rates on Treasury bills remained stable, ranging between 15% and 18%. The 91-day bill dipped by 15 basis points to 15.73% from last week’s 15.88%. The 182-day bill was unchanged at 16.93%, while the 364-day bill saw an 87-basis point increase to 18.85% from 17.98%.

Market analysts believe the undersubscription was expected, given the gradual decline in bids over the past two weeks.

This suggests the market is approaching a yield equilibrium as demand and supply stabilise. In the next auction, the Treasury aims to raise GH¢5.64 billion.

You’re disrespecting the rights of suspects – Minority slams AG

0

Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Dr. Dominic Ayine

The Minority in Parliament has slammed Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Dr. Dominic Ayine, accusing him of disrespecting the constitutional rights of citizens suspected of committing crimes.

On Monday, the Attorney General spoke to journalists, outlining various offences allegedly committed by the former Director-General of the Bureau of National Communications.

Addressing a news conference in Parliament, Legal Counsel to the Minority and MP for Suame, John Darko, accused the Attorney General of engaging in a media trial and failing to respect the rights of arrested individuals.

“And for that matter, any person who is given the opportunity, as our learned Attorney General, to enforce our law must do so within the provisions of this constitution. The sanctity of this constitutional provision stated above and the duty placed on the Attorney General of the Republic, who also doubles as Minister for Justice, requires the AG to ensure that a person charged with criminal offense is protected and presumed innocent until proving guilty by a court of competent jurisdiction or until that person has pleaded guilty.”

Meanwhile, the Minority insists that they will not be intimidated by threats of defamation suits and will continue to hold the government accountable to ensure justice.

Already, lawyers for Kwabena Adu Boahene, the former Director of the National Signal Bureau (NSB), and his wife, Angela Adjei Boateng, have accused the Attorney-General accusing of conducting a “trial by media” instead of allowing due process to take its course.

In a strongly worded legal letter dated March 24, Zoe, Akyea & Co. condemned the AG for publicly branding their clients as “state looters” during a press conference while admitting investigations by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) were still ongoing.

“The Learned Attorney-General has cheapened the press conference by pronouncing our clients guilty in the court of public opinion,” the letter stated.

“He unprofessionally labelled prejudicial information as ‘evidence,’ poisoning public perception before any formal charges.”

The lawyers argued that such conduct violates constitutional safeguards protecting suspects from being prejudged before trial.

“It is difficult to come to terms with the fact that the Attorney-General is comfortable with the press where there is “no proof beyond reasonable doubt.” The Attorney-General has become the media persecutor of our Clients, a judge in his own court while simultaneously asserting that he is still investigating the case. This is counter-intuitive.”

“We do not believe a change of government through constitutional means should degenerate into a reset version of rule of law in which the press is fed with a pathetic one-sided and untested position by the leader of the Bar. This unmitigated prejudice with defamatory consequences will be prosecuted in the appropriate forum.”

Ghana and UK strengthen economic ties – The Sierra Leone Telegraph

0

Sierra Leone Telegraph: 25 March 2025:

Ghana’s  Minister for Finance, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, has reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to deepening economic cooperation with the United Kingdom, following a high-level meeting with the UK Trade Envoy to Ghana, Bell Ribeiro-Addy, and Akosua Dentaa Amoateng MBE.

During the discussions, Dr. Ato Forson (Photo) underscored the urgent need to finalize the bilateral agreement between Ghana and the UK.

He noted that ongoing debt restructuring had delayed several critical projects, and securing this agreement would provide the necessary support for their swift commencement.

With France already committing to a similar agreement, he expressed optimism that the UK would follow suit soon.

Beyond trade and investment, the meeting also explored opportunities for technical collaboration, particularly in tax administration.

The Minister highlighted Ghana’s plans for a major VAT reform and expressed interest in learning from the UK’s highly efficient VAT system. He emphasized the importance of fostering collaboration between the UK’s HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) and the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) to strengthen Ghana’s tax policies and enhance revenue mobilization.

Bell Ribeiro-Addy, a UK Member of Parliament (Photo) with Ghanaian heritage, reassured the Minister of the UK’s commitment to resetting its relationship with Ghana and other Commonwealth nations.

She stressed that the UK views Ghana as a strategic partner rather than merely a former colony and is keen to work together towards shared economic prosperity.

Dr. Ato Forson welcomed these assurances and reiterated Ghana’s readiness to enhance cooperation with the UK across various sectors. He expressed hope that the discussions would soon translate into concrete actions that drive economic growth and development for both nations.

You can’t pressure Armah-Kofi Buah to fix galamsey menace

0

Ghanaian comedian DKB has shared his opinion on some netizens urging the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, to take more proactive steps in the fight against illegal mining (galamsey).

In a post shared on X on March 24, 2025, a netizen, among several others with similar complaints, pointed out that while the minister was in opposition, he criticized former President Akufo-Addo for his failure to combat illegal mining.

Therefore, now that he is in a position of power, he should be proactive in addressing the issue.

But in response to the tweet, DKB argued that the minister should not be pressured.

“He should fix it? Why should it be destroyed in the first place if they claimed they were patriotic citizens. You can’t give anybody pressure,” he said.

He added that the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources can only do his best and not tackle everything.

“He will do what he can, just as your people did what they could to destroy it. Nation wrecker. Greedy fuckers!” he added.

Mahama Runs To K’si Over Adum Fire Outbreak

0

President John Dramani Mahama, has visited traders at the Blue Light area, in Adum, Kumasi, after fire destroyed their shops early Friday morning.

Consoling the victims of the fire outbreak, the President demanded an immediate investigation by the police, Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) and other relevant bodies to ascertain the cause of the fire, to avert future occurrences.

President Mahama also urged the affected traders to take heart, especially in this difficult time, assuring them that the state would assist them in any way possible to get them back into business.

President Mahama, who was accompanied by the Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene and other government officials, was also seen interacting with some of the fire victims before leaving the disaster scene.

Firefighters Challenge

Meanwhile, personnel of the GNFS who rushed to the fire scene clearly struggled to deal with the inferno, as all access routes to the fire area were restricted. They therefore had to think and deploy new strategies to deal with the inferno.

But despite the accessibility challenges and lack of modern equipment on the part of the GNFS, especially in dealing with fire on a high rise building, the firefighters still did their utmost best to stop the inferno and saved some properties.

Victims in tears

When the DAILY GUIDE visited the scene, which was like a war zone, some of the affected traders, who claimed to have lost their source of livelihoods, were seen shedding uncontrollable tears as other people were consoling them.

The policemen and other security agencies, who were at the disaster scene to help ensure law and order, managed to apprehend a number of thieves, some of whom were beaten by the angry people at the scene for being heartless.

Meanwhile, the paper has also learned that the fire victims at the Blue Light area have been gripped with the fear of losing their lands permanently. Reports of plans of converting the area into a modern lorry park is making rounds in the city.

‘God has shortened the age to become a billionaire in Ghana to 40 and below’ – Apostle Amoako Attah

Apostle Francis Amoako Attah has explained what he termed as the spiritual act of the glamorous 40th birthday party organised by Ghanaian billionaire Richard Nii-Armah Quaye at the Independence Square, Accra on March 22, 2025,

Sharing his thoughts on the development, Apostle Francis Amoako Attah, in a video shared on Instagram on March 25, 2025, stated that it is not just a celebration but a symbol of God blessing the youth with breakthroughs in wealth.

He explained that, unlike the past when Ghanaians typically became wealthy only in their old age, God has now shortened the years required to acquire wealth to 40 years and below.

“God is telling us that if a 40-year-old guy is a billionaire in Ghana then it means every Ghanaian can become a billionaire at the age of 40.

“It also means God has reduced the years a Ghanaian would become a billionaire to the age of 40. Also, a Ghanaian at 25 years old can become a millionaire. History will continue to repeat itself,” he stated.

Reflecting on the glitz and glamour of the event, he mentioned that he would have broadcasted it on national television if his father were the president of Ghana.

Apostle Amoako Attah also explained that while some Ghanaians are indicating that Richard Nii-Armah Quaye organised the birthday party to flaunt his wealth, he thinks otherwise.

“The birthday party organised by the young man at Independence Square has never happened in Ghana before. You may think that is a show off but that isn’t the case. If my father was the president of Ghana, I would have televised the event on national television,” he said.

Touted as the biggest party in Ghana currently, Richard Nii-Armah Quaye’s 40th birthday party has since been discussed widely in the country and beyond.

There were performances from some of the continent’s biggest stars, a display of wealth, luxury cars, and four distinct sections at Independence Square that hosted 2,000 guests.

0

Former Director General of the National Signals Bureau (NSB), Kwabena Adu-Boahene Former Director General of the National Signals Bureau (NSB), Kwabena Adu-Boahene

On Monday, March 24, 2025, Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Dr Dominic Akuritinga Ayine at a press conference made some damning allegations against Kwabena Adu-Boahene, the former Director General of the National Signals Bureau (NSB).

Kwabena Adu-Boahene is said to have diverted and embezzled up to GH¢39 million from the bureau, leading to his arrest and detention.

According to the Attorney General, he allegedly diverted public funds meant for a cybersecurity defence system.

He gave the details as follows: “GH¢39,462,480 went into Adu-Boahene and his wife’s pockets from one transaction. We are still tracking suspect Adu-Boahene, his wife, and their assets. In the coming days, we will file the necessary charges against them.”.

“In his capacity as Director General of the National Signals Bureau, Mr. Adu-Boahene on January 30, 2020, signed a contract on behalf of the Government of Ghana and the National Security on one hand and on the other hand, an Israeli company named RLC Holdings Limited. The contract was for the purchase of a cyber defence system software at a price of $7 million,” the Attorney General said.

Providing further details, Dr. Ayine disclosed that just days after signing the agreement, Adu Boahene initiated a suspicious transaction.

“On February 6, 2020, he then transferred an initial amount of GH¢27,100,000 from the National Signals Bureau account at Fidelity Bank to a private BNC account at UMB. Official documentation on the transfer reveals that the amount was for the payment of cyber defence system software. He transferred the money to his private company,” he told the media.

According to Dr Ayine, investigations further uncovered that the former NSB boss allegedly funnelled the funds not only into his personal account but also into accounts belonging to his wife.

Given the weight of these allegations, who then is Kwabena Adu-Boahene?

Education credentials

According to the National Communications Authority, Kwabena Adu-Boahene holds a Master of Science Degree in Information Systems Management from the University of Liverpool, UK, where he studied Security Engineering, Digital Communications and Networks, Computer Forensics, Information Systems Project Management, Systems Analysis and Design using an Object-Oriented Approach and Managing Organisational Resources.

He also holds a Master’s degree in Peace, Security and Intelligence Management from the University of Professional Studies and Administration, Ghana, and a Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical/Electronic Engineering from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Ghana.

Prior to becoming Director General, Adu-Boahene served as Deputy Director of the NSB, as well as worked in various capacities including Head of Core Network, Planning and IT, and Head of Network Operations. He was previously Head of Information Systems Support Services with Atkins Global PLC, and a Lead Support Engineer with Assured Systems Limited, both in the UK.

As a National Lead in the provision of timely signals intelligence to counter threats to security and national well-being, Adu-Boahene has also managed the deployment of integrated secure communications networks throughout the country for national security, emergency preparedness and emergency response, including the key communications infrastructure that has underpinned Ghana’s General Elections since 2008.

Deacon at Cedar Mountain Assemblies of God Church

Kwabena Adu-Boahene is reportedly a deacon at the Assemblies of God Church Ghana, Cedar Mountain, located in Accra.

Amid the unfolding controversy, videos have emerged of him delivering sermons to congregants. Within the church, he is said to hold the title of “Chief Rabbi Deacon.”

Businesses

Kwabena Adu-Boahene is allegedly the owner of Glofert, a multimillion-dollar company and one of the biggest fertilizer companies in West Africa.

According to Asaase Radio online, the entity has loans from banks including ECOWAS Development Bank which it services diligently.

The media outlet added that Glofert did many businesses with COCOBOD when Dr. Stephen Opuni was the Chief Executive Officer of the entity. He and his wife, Angela Adjei Boateng, own several other successful businesses in and outside Ghana.

He is also said to have owned businesses long before 2017.

Luxurious car collection

He is said to have owned many expensive cars including Ferraris, G-Wagons, Range Rovers and others before 2017.

PUWU demands clarity over reversal of John Ocansey’s appointment as ECG Deputy MD

0

The Public Utilities Workers Union (PUWU) has called for clarity from the government following the reported reversal of John Ayiku Ocansey’s appointment as Acting Deputy Managing Director of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).

The demand comes after conflicting communications from ECG and the Ministry of Energy left the union questioning the decision-making process.

On March 17, 2025, a letter from ECG announced Ayiku Ocansey as the new Acting Deputy Managing Director, a move initially welcomed by ECG workers.

However, a subsequent statement from Energy Minister John Jinapor on March 18 declared that the earlier letter had been issued inadvertently and was withdrawn, effectively nullifying the appointment.

PUWU General Secretary Timothy Nyame, in an interview with Citi News, expressed the union’s confusion and frustration over the sudden reversal.

“We find it strange that one person’s appointment can be reversed by another,” Nyame said. He emphasized that Ayiku Ocansey, an ECG staff member, was set to assume his role on March 24, following what the union believed was a legitimate appointment by the President.

“It can only come from His Excellency, the appointing authority, to revoke an appointment he has made,” Nyame added, noting that the letter reversing the appointment was not signed by the President or the Chief of Staff.

Nyame questioned the basis for the withdrawal, stating, “We don’t believe his appointment has been reversed.”

He further asserted that the union had not opposed the appointment and saw no reason for it to be rescinded.

“We will demand answers as to why his appointment is being reversed,” he insisted.

Until his appointment, John Ayiku Ocansey was the HR Manager for ECG’s Accra East Region. He holds a BSc in Social Sciences from the University of Ghana, an MSc in Governance and Development from the University of Cape Coast, and an LLB from Mountcrest University College.

Former FIFA president Sepp Blatter and Michel Platini acquitted of fraud charges

Sepp Blatter (L) and Michel Platini (R) Sepp Blatter (L) and Michel Platini (R)

The former president of the Federation International Football Association (FIFA), Sepp Blatter, and the former President of UEFA, Michel Platini, have been cleared of any wrongdoing for the second time in court.

This follows allegations of their involvement in fraud, forgery, mismanagement, and the misappropriation of more than £1.55 million of FIFA money in 2011, which was allegedly paid by Blatter to Platini.

Despite these accusations, both were acquitted of financial wrongdoing in July 2022 before facing another trial in Switzerland in 2025, where they have again been cleared.

The charges, which included fraud, forgery, misappropriation of funds, and mismanagement, were dismissed by three federal judges.

However, the Attorney General’s Office in Switzerland challenged their acquittal, instead pushing for 20-month sentences, suspended for two years.

Blatter and Platini were once again acquitted on Tuesday, March 25, 2025, of all charges.

The scandal ended Platini’s hopes of succeeding Blatter as the president of FIFA, a position for which he had been heavily favored.

Both he and Blatter were suspended from football activities in 2015.

Trump lashes out at SA again as AfriForum thanks US president

0

CEO Kallie Kriel thanks Trump for ‘taking note of the irresponsible calls for violence. CEO Kallie Kriel thanks Trump for ‘taking note of the irresponsible calls for violence.

US President Donald Trump has lashed out again at South Africa, this time about EFF leader Julius Malema’s ‘Kill the Boer’ chant.

This comes after South African-born CEO of Space X and Tesla, Elon Musk, shared a post on his platform X about a “major political party that was actively promoting white genocide” in the country.

“Very few people know that there is a major political party in South Africa that is actively promoting white genocide. The video [of Malema chanting ‘Kill the Boer’] was just [recent]. A whole arena chanting about killing white people.”

Thanking Trump

Trump then took to his Truth Social platform, where he posted a screenshot of Musk’s tweet on the matter.

The US president’s post ignited a spark of enthusiasm from AfriForum CEO Kallie Kriel, who thanked Trump for his support.

“Thank you, President Donald Trump, for taking note of the irresponsible calls for violence against Afrikaners/whites—through hate chants such as “Kill the Boer, kill the farmer”—in South Africa. The tragic irony is that the latest incident occurred on March 21, which is officially known as “Human Rights Day” in South Africa.

“What makes this even worse is that this renewed call for violence against Afrikaners was not condemned by President Ramaphosa, ANC leaders, or the South African Government. Their silence regarding this gross human rights violation is deafening,” Kriel posted on X in response to Trump’s post.

‘No genocide in SA’

Last month, Patriotic Alliance (PA) leader Gayton McKenzie said he and Kriel agreed that there is no white genocide in South Africa.

“So you are saying there is no white genocide in South Africa?” McKenzie asked.

“No, we’ve never said that, but there is a serious problem,” Kriel replied.

However, McKenzie pushed Kriel for clarity.

“Of course, there is a problem; people being killed on their farms is a problem, but you’re saying there’s no white genocide?” McKenzie asked Kriel again.

“Genocide is what we saw in Rwanda,” Kriel said.

‘Kill the Boer’

In 2024, The Supreme Court of Appeal (SCA) dismissed, with costs, AfriForum’s appeal against the court ruling that the EFF singing the “Kill the Boer” song was not hate speech.

The SCA ruling emanated from a judgment by the Equality Court in Johannesburg in August 2020, where Judge Edwin Molahlehi ordered that the “Kill the Boer” song does not constitute hate speech after AfriForum’s witnesses and its deputy CEO Ernst Roets failed to link the song to an allegation that it incited a genocide of white farmers.

AfriForum also pointed to a single occasion when former EFF MP Mbuyiseni Ndlozi chanted a similar song, including the words: ‘Shisa lamabhunu, EFF ingen’endaweni’ (Shisa lamabhunu). The literal English translation of that chant was: ‘Burn these Boers, EFF enters in the space or place’.

The court held that what Malema was doing was no more than exercising his right to freedom of expression.

In 2022, the Pretoria High Court dismissed AfriForum’s hate speech case against the EFF over the party’s use of the struggle song, Dubul’ Ibhunu, which translates to “Shoot the Boer”.
