Starting next month, the Ministry of Labour, Jobs and Employment (MLJE) will roll out a nationwide Qualifications and Skills Mismatches Survey (QSMS) targeting individuals in employment across both the formal and informal sectors.
The objective is to generate data that will inform evidence-based policymaking, particularly to bridge the gap between education, skills and the labour sectors.
The QSMS, as defined by the International Labour Organisation (ILO), assesses the extent to which workers’ qualifications and skills align with the requirements of their jobs.
It identifies mismatches such as underqualification, overqualification, or a disconnect between the skills held by workers and those demanded by employers.
In collaboration with the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS), the national QSMS project aims at measuring the prevalence of skills and qualifications mismatches in the Ghanaian workforce.
The data collected will support the development of policies that better match education and training programmes to labour market needs, while also serving as a complementary measure of labour underutilisation in sectors within regions across the country.
As part of preparations for the upcoming survey, the ministry held a stakeholder engagement last Wednesday in Accra, bringing together representatives from the education sector, as well as public and private institutions.
Participants discussed the institutional and individual components of the QSMS and deliberated on the way forward for the successful implementation of the national project.
In attendance were the Director, Research, Statistics and Information Management, MLJE, Shadrack Mensah; acting Chief Director, Gloria Borteley Noi; Vice-Chancellor of the University of Professional Studies, Accra, Prof. John Kwaku Mensah Mawutor; representative of the Ghana Employers Association, Kingsley Narh, and Bernard Adjei from the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission.
The Minister of Labour, Jobs and Employment, Dr Rashid Pelpuo, in a speech read on his behalf by the Acting Chief Director, Gloria Borteley Noi, at the statekeholder engagement yesterday said as the lead policymaker on employment and labour-related issues, his outfit recognised the critical need for comprehensive data to address mismatches in employment.
“The QSMS will be Ghana’s first nationally representative survey to measure these gaps across formal and informal employment sectors, inform policy, align education with labour market needs, and ultimately enhance productivity,” Dr Pelpuo said.
The minister stressed that countries worldwide were focusing on economic growth by improving labour productivity, while economies like Ghana, which once absorbed many low-skilled workers, especially in agriculture, technological advancements were now reducing demand for such jobs.
“This challenge is compounded by the perceived shortage of critical skills and the mismatch between qualifications/skills and the labour market needs. These gaps hinder proper placement and utilisation of employees, affecting both formal and informal sectors of our economy,” he said.
The Director, Research, Statistics and Information Management, Mr Shadrack Mensah, mentioned that the ministry had already conducted a pilot survey in the Greater Accra, Northern, and Upper West regions to refine the survey instrument and monitoring frameworks, as well as build the capacity of field teams and identify logistical challenges.
He urged stakeholders, industrial leaders, policymakers, and development partners to actively support the survey’s successful execution, which would provide valuable information to inform National Human Capital Development policies and programmes.
The Focal Person for the MLJE at the GSS, Jane Geraldo-Acolatse, emphasised that the GSS’s core mandate was to produce data and statistics to support policy formulation and evidence-based decision-making.
She added that the upcoming QSMS fell squarely within this mandate and appealed to all stakeholders, especially the media, to help raise public awareness of the survey.
That, she explained, would ensure smooth cooperation between field officers and respondents during the data collection process.

A leading member of the Movement For Change, Hopeson Adorye, has indicated that the Minority in Parliament and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) are on the case of Sammy Gyamfi because of some regulations put in place by the Gold Board.
The minority in Parliament, at a press conference, condemned the acting chief executive of the Gold Board for doling out dollars to Nana Agradaa.
The Greater Accra Regional Minister, Ms Linda Obenewaa Akweley Ocloo, has expressed concern regarding the ongoing rejection of nominees for Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) across different assemblies.
She indicated that such rejections could severely impact the development of the affected assemblies, as the lack of MDCEs would result in the stagnation of development projects, consequently delaying community advancement and obstructing the overall growth and progress of the nation.
Mrs Ocloo therefore called on assembly members and government appointees to collaborate effectively with the MMDCEs to ensure the confirmation process was smooth and successful.
Addressing journalists on Thursday at Ada in Accra, after the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) nominee for Ada East, Mr Kenneth Kabu Kanor failed to secure the two thirds majority during his confirmation, she said there was the need for better collaboration between nominees and assembly members to ensure a successful result.
Mr Kanor secured 21 votes out of the total of 35 cast.
In contrast, the environment and outcomes in the Ashaiman Municipal Assembly, Kpone Katamanso Municipal Assembly, and Tema West Municipal Assembly were characterised by cooperation and productivity, as noted by the minister.
The Nominee for Ashaiman Municipal Assembly, Mr Freeman Tsekpo was confirmed and sworn in by the minister after securing 100 per cent yes votes from the 26 assembly members, made up of 18 elected and eight government appointees.
Similarly, the nominee for Kpone Katamanso Municipal Assembly, Mr Samuel Tetteh Kwarshie Morton was also confirmed and sworn in after successfully obtaining 26 votes out of the total 27 votes cast by the assembly members.
Also, Mr Ludwig Teye Totimeh, the nominee for Tema West Municipal Assembly was confirmed and sworn into office by the minister after obtaining a 100 per cent vote, unanimously confirmed, with all 16 assembly members.
She urged assembly members to work closely with the MCEs to ensure the effective implementation of development initiatives in their electoral areas.
The Policy Adviser for Political Affairs at the Office of the Vice President Dr Samuel Ofosu Ampofo, who was present at the confirmation of the Tema West MCE, assured the assembly and indigenes that they would not be left out of government’s development initiatives.
He reaffirmed government’s commitment to equitable development across all districts, assuring the assembly that Tema West would enjoy its fair share of the “national cake.”
The sworn-in MCEs expressed their appreciation to President John Dramani Mahama for their nominations, and to assembly members for the overwhelming support.
In his acceptance speech, Mr Tsekpo, said Ashaiman was a vibrant and dynamic municipality and home to industrious people who contribute immensely to the socio-economic growth of Ghana.
He highlighted pressing community issues, including poor infrastructure, sanitation problems, traffic congestion, youth unemployment, and security concerns, which his administration will prioritise and address with commitment and urgency.
The new MCE stated that they would work tirelessly to ensure the expansion and rehabilitation of roads to ease traffic congestion, improve drainage systems to mitigate flooding, and enhance access to essential services such as health, education, job creation, and youth unemployment.

Member of Parliament for Lambussie, Prof. Titus Beyuo, has rejected calls by the Minority in Parliament for the suspension of Sammy Gyamfi, Acting CEO of the Ghana Gold Board, describing the demands as baseless and politically driven.
His defense comes in the wake of public criticism and political pressure over a viral video showing Gyamfi handing what appeared to be U.S. dollars to controversial evangelist and former fetish priestess, Patricia Asiedua Asiamah, popularly known as Nana Agradaa.
The footage triggered a wave of backlash, with the Minority demanding Gyamfi’s suspension over what they deemed an inappropriate act.
However, speaking on Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily on Tuesday, May 13, 2025, Prof. Beyuo acknowledged the optics were poor but insisted there was no legal or procedural breach.
“He has recognised that with what he did, even though it was not a crime, it doesn’t inure to be good for the government, to the person who appointed me, and to the people I am serving, which is why he called that indiscretion.”
He further argued that there are no clear grounds for disciplinary action under existing laws.
“But I am saying that the offenses listed under which specific punishment will apply, we don’t see that here.”
Prof. Beyuo maintained that the matter is being handled appropriately by the presidency and urged critics to allow the process to run its course.
“I see the call by the Minority, honestly, to be baseless. The presidency is determined to deal with it, let us leave it as such,” he concluded.

Embattled Canadian 32-year-old rapper, Tory Lanez, has been rushed to the hospital after being stabbed at the California Correctional Institution at Tehachapi.

Because the Bible said we should do good to everybody, the Bible did not discriminate when it said that. So, if Sammy Gyamfi gives me money, he deserves to do that,” she added.
Meanwhile, the Minister in charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, on May 12, 2025, accused the New Patriotic Party (NPP) of engaging in opportunistic politics by calling for Gyamfi’s suspension.
Speaking on Eyewitness News with Umaru Sanda Amadu, Mr. Kwakye Ofosu dismissed the NPP’s reaction as politically motivated, questioning their credibility on issues of public accountability.
“The moment the NPP jumps into this, you know that they’re just dabbling in opportunistic politics. They don’t believe in any of the principles they’re espousing. If you look at their conduct and behaviour in government, this is not a party that has any respect for modesty or even decency in public office,” he said.

Founder and leader of Heaven Way Church, Evangelist Mama Pat, popularly known as Nana Agradaa, has vowed to sell her church building and give half of the proceeds to Lawyer Sammy Gyamfi to start a business, should he be removed from office for gifting her $800.
There has been a wave of criticism in the last 48 hours after a video went viral showing Mr. Gyamfi giving dollar notes to Asiedua Asiamah at a public gathering.
Some segments of the public have criticized the gesture, questioning its appropriateness in light of the current economic difficulties.

Ghana’s local currency, the cedi, has recorded marginal gains against major trading currencies, particularly the US dollar, at some forex bureaus.
In its daily update, the Central Bank noted that the cedi is trading at a buying price of GH¢12.8 and a selling price of GH¢12.89 to a dollar.

A Deputy Director of Communications of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Ernest Owusu Bempah, in a rare show of support, has jumped to the defence of the embattled Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board, Sammy Gyamfi.
Gyamfi, at a public event on Saturday, May 10, 2025, was seen doling out several notes of U.S. dollars to the controversial former priestess-turned-pastor, Evangelist Mama Patricia, popularly known as Agradaa.
A section of the public has criticized the gesture, questioning its appropriateness in light of the current economic difficulties.
Some have gone further, calling for his removal from office to serve as a deterrent to other political appointees.
Mr. Gyamfi has since issued an apology, clarifying that the donation was a private gesture and not intended for public display. Julius Debrah, the Chief of Staff, has reportedly summoned him to explain the circumstances surrounding the incident.
However, in a video posted on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Ernest Owusu Bempah defended Gyamfi, stating that he sees no wrongdoing or crime for which the young politician should be dismissed.

The AfriKan Continental Union Consult (ACUC), a think-tank in African good governance, has called for the resignation of Mr. Sammy Gyamfi, the acting Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), over a viral dollar donation video.
The viral video, which has drawn massive disapproval from the public, shows Mr. Gyamfi counting and giving some undisclosed amount of foreign currency to Madam Patricia Oduro Koranteng, popularly known as Nana Agradaa, a self-proclaimed evangelist.
Dr. Benjamin Anyagre Aziginaateeg, the Chief Executive Officer of the ACUC, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in a reaction that Mr. Gyamfi, who is also the Communication Director of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), must resign or be dismissed from office by the president if the public misconduct is proven to be true.
Dr. Aziginaateeg said the video was an affront and disregard to Ghana’s image and a dent on the office of the president, especially when President John Dramani Mahama just launched a code of conduct for government office holders.
“This is a test case; let’s face it squarely, as a huge measurement for good governance, indeed, what a test case for the President,” he stressed, adding that “He should resign because he has lost it. The resetting must begin with good attitudinal behaviours of people in power.”
He further questioned what moral right the government would have to talk about corruption and other related issues, especially when the giveaway was not in local currency and it involved the CEO of a mineral-related board.
According to the ACUC CEO, the resident risks becoming unpopular within days if he does not walk the code of conduct, suggesting that within six months, the president should do a review of the performance of the government appointee.
“He cannot disappoint the Ghanaian with his richly accumulated experiences. He will be hated more than for President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo if he remains soft,” he said.
He further added that governments must have clear ideologies and adequate preparation of their officers before assumption of duty, as without that, the government might fail right from the beginning.
Meanwhile, Mr. Gyamfi has since apologised to Ghanaians and the president for the content of the viral video, clarifying that, “this was simply a kind gesture to a fellow human being, in line with my daily and lifelong custom of lending a helping hand to people in need. I sincerely thought that I was doing this act of kindness in private and never imagined that same could find its way into the public space.”
He added in a post on X.
Mr. Gyamfi wrote, “That is unfortunate and regrettable. I must say that I understand the uproar that this gesture has generated, particularly from comrades who are sincerely hurt by the same. To all such comrades, I AM SINCERELY SORRY for this unfortunate act of indiscretion. I respect and appreciate your views.”

The Ghana Police Service has arrested four individuals suspected to be behind the brutal murder of a Mobile Money (MoMo) vendor in Aflao, located in the Volta Region.
In a press release dated May 12, 2025, the Volta Regional Police Command disclosed that the arrests were made on May 10 during a coordinated intelligence-led operation.
The operation was carried out by the Regional Police Intelligence Department (RPID), the SWAT Unit, the Operation Motherland Taskforce, and a local community watch group known as ‘ACTION NOW’.
The suspects—Michael Sewornu, 34; Korku Agboada, 43; Atsu Agbagla, 36; and Utsuku Onyeso, 22, a Nigerian national—are currently in police custody and assisting with investigations.
According to the police, the incident occurred on April 28, 2025, at approximately 6:15 p.m., when about five unidentified gunmen attacked and fatally shot Christopher Ahordo, a mobile money vendor, at Gbagblakope near the Diamond Cement factory in Aflao.
The assailants allegedly fled with a bag believed to contain cash.
The suspects are expected to be arraigned before court on Tuesday, May 13, 2025.
The police have renewed their call for public vigilance and cooperation, urging residents to provide timely and credible information to support ongoing efforts to fight crime in the region.

A Superior Court in Essex County, New Jersey, on May 12, 2025, reduced a defamation award against former Assin Central Member of Parliament, Kennedy Agyapong, from $18 million to $500, following a legal request by his lawyers.
The court’s decision came after the trial judge acknowledged that while Kennedy Agyapong had indeed defamed investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas, the original amount awarded by the jury was deemed excessive.
Although the financial penalty was significantly reduced, the court upheld the jury’s finding of malicious defamation.
“THIS MATTER having been brought before the Court upon application by Connell Foley LLP and Breslin & Breslin, P.A., attorneys for Defendant, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong (“Defendant”), for an Order molding the jury award; and the Court having considered the matter, the submissions of counsel, and the arguments of counsel, if any, and for good cause showing; IT IS on this 12 day of MAY 2025; ORDERED that Defendant’s Motion is hereby GRANTED; and MOLDED TO $500.
“ORDERED that the total jury award of $18,000,000.00 is hereby reduced to $500,” part of the court papers said.
Meanwhile, in a statement released on Sunday, May 11, 2025, Anas, through his investigative outfit Tiger Eye PI, welcomed the revised judgment, emphasising that it reaffirmed the central issue of the case: that Agyapong maliciously defamed him.
“Following the award, Kennedy Agyapong filed a motion for remittitur… Thus, inherent in his motion, Kennedy Agyapong admitted to having maliciously defamed me,” it stated.
Anas added that the case was not about money but about setting the records straight.
“This fight has not been about the money, but rather, a fight for truth and justice,” he added.
The case originated in 2019 after Anas sued Ken Agyapong in the US over defamatory remarks the MP made following the release of the Number 12 documentary.
The investigative piece produced by Tiger Eye PI exposed rooted corruption within Ghana’s football sector, leading to the resignation of the then Ghana Football Association President, Kwesi Nyantakyi.
Kennedy Agyapong launched a sustained public campaign to discredit Anas, accusing him of fraud and unethical journalism. The accusations formed the basis of the defamation lawsuit.
In April 2025, a US jury ruled in favour of Anas and awarded $18 million in damages.
However, Kennedy Agyapong’s legal team later filed a motion for remittitur, contending that the amount was excessive.
The trial judge agreed, leading to the reduction.

The Deputy National Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Ernest Kofi Owusu Bempah, has passionately come to the defence of Sammy Gyamfi, the National Communications Officer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), following a storm of criticism over his recent $10,000 cash donation to popular televangelist, Evangelist Agradaa.
The donation, which was made publicly during one of Agradaa’s events, sparked heated debates on social media, with critics questioning how a public servant like Gyamfi could afford such generosity. But Owusu Bempah believes the backlash is politically motivated and deeply hypocritical.
In an interview on NET2 TV, sighted by Ghbase News, Owusu Bempah did not hold back: “Leave Sammy Gyamfi alone. We know NPP big men who spray $50,000 on women. He who comes with equity must come with clean hands,” he charged, suggesting that members of his own party had done far worse without facing scrutiny.

“The biggest challenge that the continent has currently is the power resources – which has a huge impact on the prices, whether for the customers or for the cost of the operation itself. This is where the biggest challenge applies.”
“To allow sustainable connectivity, we invest in three different layers while in Europe, for example, you don’t need to do all these three layers. One layer is enough. So this challenge is putting the private sector under pressure to put up more capital expenditure at the same time facing a lot of challenges because of power outages”, he said.
In an interview with Citi Business News’ Nii Larte Lartey on the sidelines of the 2025 Africa CEO Forum in Abidjan, Moh Damush, noted that energy expenses are a major factor behind data pricing, particularly in markets with unreliable power supply – a development making it difficult to expand affordable connectivity to underserved areas.
“There are different ways to address them. One is through government support, which we’re currently seeing, where government focuses on attracting investments. These investments yield direct benefits across various sectors, including telecom. Another approach, particularly for power-intensive industries like telecommunications, is to subsidise power costs. This would improve service quality for users while still ensuring revenue generation for the government.”

Minority in Parliament condemns the absence of the President, Vice President, and Speaker without swearing in an Acting President, calling it a violation of Article 60.
The Minority Caucus in Parliament has issued a sharp rebuke over what it calls a serious constitutional violation following the simultaneous absence of President John Dramani Mahama, Vice President Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, and Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin from the country—without swearing in an Acting President as required under Article 60 of the 1992 Constitution.
MS Janet Yaa Obido, an Assistant Civic Education Officer with the Kadjebi District Directorate of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), has called on the citizenry to participate fully in Ghana’s development.
She emphasised that development is a shared responsibility.
She stated that every action, whether small or large, contributes to national development and that if we all rise to the challenges with commitment and action, we can build a nation, grounded in peace that offers hope, opportunity and a better life for every Ghanaian.
Ms Obido made these remarks while addressing some seamstress and hairdressing apprentices in Kadjebi in the Oti Region.
The engagement formed part of the commission’s activities in marking the 2025 Constitution Week celebration, a flagship programme of the commission.
She said that Ghana’s progress will not come solely through big policies or foreign investments, rather, through citizens seeing themselves as nation-builders and that this can be achieved when citizens obey laws, protect public property, safeguard the environment, uphold justice, and foster peaceful co-existence.
Ms Obido stated that these values, when embraced by individuals and communities, formed the moral and social foundation needed to secure Ghana’s long-term success.
She charged the apprentices to care for the environment by avoiding littering, supporting reforestation and conserving water and energy.
Madam Alberta Humado, Proprietress Ahafia Beauty Parlor, Kadjebi, commended the NCCE Officer for the insightful education and pledged to convey the message to other mistresses.

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II
Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has observed that Bawku, in the Upper East Region, is currently experiencing a period of relative peace as a result of recent mediation efforts in the ongoing crisis.
The conflicting Kusasi and Mamprusi factions met with the Asantehene, who led the peace negotiations, between April 28 and April 30. The talks were then briefly paused.
During a meeting on Monday, May 12, 2025, at the Manhyia Palace with the Inspector-General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, Otumfuo stated that the mediation process would soon resume.
“We are still on the matter, and we will meet again to address the issues. We are not done yet. But the little we have done has brought some calm to the area. We will brief you and Ghanaians soon,” he was quoted as saying by citinewsroom.com.

Youth For Action (YFA), a pressure advocacy group, has issued a strong call to President John Dramani Mahama, urging him to move beyond what they described as “lip service” and take concrete steps toward fulfilling key promises made to the youth during the 2024 general election campaign.
At a press conference held today at the Accra International Press Centre, the group’s Convenor, Isaac Acheampong, expressed disappointment in what he described as the government’s lack of urgency in implementing the bold promises outlined in the National Democratic Congress (NDC)’s 2024 manifesto.
He noted that while expectations were high among young people, the government’s first budget presentation failed to address many of the core issues the NDC had campaigned on.
“Before the 2024 elections, the NDC made several commitments to young people, promising us a new direction, a new vision, and, above all, economic empowerment,” Acheampong said.
“One of the key campaign promises was the provision of flexible loans for young entrepreneurs to strengthen their businesses. But sadly, that initiative was completely absent from the first budget presented by the Finance Minister.”
Acheampong further criticised the government’s introduction of the Adwumawura project, which he claimed is merely a rebranded version of the previous administration’s YouStart programme.
According to him, this approach is not only misleading but also an attempt to obscure the lack of original solutions tailored to the needs of Ghanaian youth.
“We were promised innovative policies that would uplift young people and create jobs. Instead, what we see is an attempt to relaunch an old policy under a new name. The Adwumawura initiative is simply a repackaged version of YouStart, and it is a deliberate attempt to confuse the public,” he said.
In addition, Acheampong raised serious concerns about the recent 14.75% hike in electricity tariffs, warning that such a move poses a direct threat to the success of the NDC’s flagship 24-hour economy policy.
He argued that since the policy heavily depends on industrialisation and a consistent power supply, rising utility costs will place unnecessary pressure on businesses and render the initiative unsustainable.
“We cannot talk about a 24-hour economy if industries are crippled by high electricity bills. The 14.75% increase in tariffs will only hurt the very industries that are supposed to drive the policy. In the end, this will only increase the unemployment rate among the youth.”
He called on President Mahama to demonstrate leadership by urgently and transparently revisiting these key issues.
Acheampong also issued a rallying call to civil society organisations, labour unions, student bodies, and all well-meaning Ghanaians to join the campaign in demanding immediate action from the government.

A prominent Russian state TV host has made extreme threats against the United States, claiming nuclear strikes could turn the country into a “radioactive Waterworld”.
In the attack Vladimir Solovyov, host of The Evening With Vladimir Solovyov, also dismissed the idea President Donald Trump can control Vladimir Putin in a raging rant aimed at both American politicians and the broader West.
Solovyov, a longtime Kremlin ally and media figure, appeared to be responding to growing US pressure on Russia surrounding ongoing efforts to find a peaceful resolution to the war in Ukraine. “The US doesn’t rule out re-establishing dialogue with Pyongyang. This fits in with Trump’s politics,” Solovyov said.
“In foreign affairs, he leans into the art of the deal – it doesn’t matter with whom: historic partners or enemies.”
But Solovyov argued Trump’s approach faces resistance, particularly from what he described as “Russophobic Europe” and “mumbling toothless hawks in Washington”.
He singled out Senator John Kennedy, reacting to recent comments where Kennedy suggested the US should increase pressure on Russia to force it to the negotiation table.
“I don’t want to listen to Senator Kennedy, because the cretin said that they are ready to turn our president and his country, meaning us, into fish food,” Solovyov said.
Quoting Kennedy’s call to “stop the oil sales” and “suffocate” Russia economically, Solovyov fired back with a reference to a Cold War-era nuclear scenario allegedly proposed by Soviet physicist Andrei Sakharov.
“He [Sakharov] proposed to blow up two hydrogen bombs near the two coasts of the United States. The incoming wave of a radioactive tsunami would turn the US into a sort of Waterworld,” Solovyov said, referencing the 1995 Hollywood film.
“The strait that would be created in the process would be named in honour of Comrade Stalin.”
The host added the plan was once rejected by a Soviet admiral who “didn’t want to target civilians”, but claimed America’s record in conflicts like Vietnam, Iraq and Syria showed that “they are butchers, not officers”.
“I hope Trump is different,” Solovyov said. “But based on how we saw Americans fight, it reinforces our definition.”
While the Kremlin has not officially endorsed Solovyov’s comments, they come at a time of tense international discussions over a possible peace deal between Ukraine and Russia.
With Trump back in the White House and JD Vance serving as Vice President, US rhetoric has shifted toward deal-making – but Solovyov’s outburst is a reminder that peace talks are unfolding in a volatile climate.
Analysts warn that threats like these, while not official policy, reflect the tone of Russian state media and could shape public perception at home.

A 23-year-old cashier has been sentenced to three months imprisonment with hard labour by the Kaneshie District Court One after pleading guilty to stealing GH¢8,575.00 from his employer and using it for sports betting, which he eventually lost.
The convict, Andy Tetteh, was employed at Bingo Bets, a betting company located at Ecomog, Adabraka, where he worked as a cashier. According to Police Chief Inspector Achana Apewah, who prosecuted the case, the incident occurred on April 30, 2025, when Tetteh received bets totalling GH¢8,575.00 from customers but failed to account for the money.
Mr. Teye Simon Kwabla, the complainant and manager of Bingo Bets, lodged a complaint with the police after Tetteh could not produce the funds. Investigations revealed that Tetteh had diverted the entire amount into betting, hoping to multiply the money but ended up losing all of it.
He was arrested, charged with stealing, and arraigned before the court, where he admitted the offence. The presiding judge convicted him on his own plea and handed down a three-month sentence to be served with hard labour.
The case highlights growing concerns over gambling-related theft and the financial risks posed by unregulated or excessive betting behaviour, particularly among the youth.
The Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) is exploring innovative strategies to reduce and stabilize hotel rates by promoting the integration of renewable energy solutions—particularly solar power—within the hospitality sector.
According to GTA CEO Maame Efua Houadjeto, the authority is in talks with financial institutions to facilitate access to funding for hotels seeking to invest in sustainable energy technologies.
The move is aimed at enhancing cost-efficiency and boosting competitiveness in the tourism sector.
Maame Efua Houadjeto disclosed this during a media interaction at the launch of the GTA’s new Public-Private Partnership (PPP) Department and the introduction of its newly appointed Director of Corporate Affairs.
“Sustainable tourism is not cheap, it can be expensive because installing solar in every hotel so that the hotel rates can come down is quite an investment. We believe that we should open our doors for people to come and partner us, so that we allow the hotels to get to that level where every hotel will have a solar installation and their utility bills will come down and in doing that their rates will also come down.
“We are competing with other people in tourism and if we really want to be number one in West Africa or in Africa for that matter, we need to look at our hotel rates and our hotel rates are quite expensive now.
“We believe that solar for instance is going to help us reduce the rate. Another thing is the car rental, here we talk about sustainable tourism. We are looking at EV cars as well. We are looking at supporting the transport unit or the tour operators with EV cars and we can do that only by having a private sector partnership,” she said.
Meanwhile, Director of the Public Private Partnership Department under the Ghana Tourism Authority, Jones Nelson, has pledged to drive investment into the sector.
“It used to be a unit under the corporate affairs department and this time around, we are separating it to have a wider scope in order to meet the needs of stakeholders. We are talking about sector skills training, training of tour guides, site guides, the customer service in the hotel industry and then of course my CEO Maame Efua also mentioned the fact that we need to help them we support them technically, financially.
“So we are talking to a few banks to support them in terms of soft loans for two and a half years to be able to get some funding in the area of energy. We are talking about green house and all that green energy so they can get solar power in the various units especially the hoteliers and this can bring the rate of the hotels and other tourists and for that matter the lay person to be able to patronize their services.
“This is critical in the positive sense that we need to widen our scope now it is not limited to only the umbrella body of the Ghana Tourism Authority,” he added.

Nigerian skit maker, Abdulgafar Ahmad, better known as Cute Abiola, has recounted the difficulties he faced balancing his creative career with life in the Nigerian navy.

The Ghana Tourism Authority has launched a new Public-Private Partnership (PPP) Department aimed at strengthening cooperation between government and the private sector in order to drive sustainable growth in the country’s tourism industry.
The initiative, unveiled at a press conference yesterday, is expected to boost investment, improve infrastructure, and promote Ghana as a leading cultural and tourist destination in West Africa.
The Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Tourism Authority, Maame Efua Huoadjeto, called the launch a “pivotal moment” in Ghana’s tourism journey.
She noted that the new department is backed by Section 42 of the Tourism Act, 2011 (Act 817), which calls for institutionalising a Public-Private Partnership forum.
This platform, she explained, would allow for “co-planning, co-investing, and co-implementation” of projects that promote tourism across Ghana.
Maame Huoadjeto emphasised the importance of sustainable tourism and green energy solutions.
She stressed the need to preserve Ghana’s natural and cultural heritage while using tourism as a tool for community development and job creation.
She also highlighted the role of ethical tourism, urging both public and private partners to prioritise child protection and responsible practices.
Furthermore, the CEO also promoted the “Black Star Experience,” describing it as a key initiative to position Ghana as Africa’s cultural and creative hub.
According to her, this year-round showcase of Ghanaian festivals, music, arts, cuisine, and film was part of a broader effort to rebrand the country’s global image.
Mr Jones Aruna Nelson, Director of the new PPP Department, elaborated that the department would support flagship initiatives such as the Black Star Experience and the Resetting Agenda, to rethink tourism strategies for better results.
He called on both local and foreign investors to see the PPP platform as an opportunity to engage in tourism projects to yield economic and cultural benefits.
Mr Nelson also stated that the new department would help attract world-class expertise and financial resources, allowing for smoother policy alignment, better infrastructure, and destination marketing.
The newly appointed Corporate Affairs Director, GTA, Mr Bright Asempa Tsadidey, described tourism as more than movement, saying “it is storytelling and a way to connect every visitor to Ghana’s living heritage and we are committed to public education, strengthening media relations, and building a stronger tourism identity that reflects the soul of Ghana”.
The President of the Ghana Tourism Federation (GHATOF), Mr Charles Gyamfi, commended the initiative, describing it as a strong signal of Ghana’s commitment to collective progress.
He said the role of the private sector in tourism from hotels and transport to arts and events – could not be ignored, adding that no single institution could unlock the full potential of tourism in Ghana.
Mr Gyamfi then urged the leadership of the new PPP Department to lead with “openness and accountability.”
