‘The writing is on the wall, Chief Justice Torkornoo will be removed’ – Ansa-Asare

Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo (L) and Kwaku Ansa-Asare Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo (L) and Kwaku Ansa-Asare

Legal luminary Kwaku Ansa-Asare has asserted that the fate of suspended Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo is sealed.

According to Ansa-Asare, a former director of the Ghana School of Law, Justice Torkornoo will certainly be ousted from office once the committee investigating three petitions for her removal completes its work.

Speaking in an interview on Woezor TV, shared on X on April 25, 2025, the statesman said his analysis of the situation points to only one conclusion.

“Without mincing words, I think the CJ (Chief Justice) will not come out well at all. Having regard to what is going on, the writing is on the wall, the CJ will be removed.

“I don’t think I would be doing any credit to myself if, after observing the landscape, I still maintained that the Chief Justice would come out clean and therefore keep her job. I don’t think so,” he said.

Chief Justice Torkornoo was suspended after President John Dramani Mahama, in consultation with the Council of State, found a prima facie case in the three petitions for her removal. These petitions were filed by a group calling itself the Shining Stars of Ghana; a senior police officer, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Ayamga Yakubu Akolgo (Esq.); and a private citizen, Daniel Ofori.

Shining Stars, who first petitioned the president on February 14, 2025, accused her of breaching the 1992 Constitution of Ghana in her ruling in a suit filed by the current Minority Leader, Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin, against the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, over the declaration of four seats in Parliament as vacant.

In the second petition, presented by Daniel Ofori on March 17, 2025, Justice Torkornoo is accused of misappropriating about GH¢261,890 and US$30,000 during her foreign trips.

“In 2023, the Honourable Chief Justice misappropriated the sum of GH¢261,890 of public funds for private foreign travel with her husband, Mr. Francis Kofi Torkornoo, and her daughter, Miss Edem S.A. Torkornoo, and US$30,000 in per diem allowance when, to her knowledge, neither the husband nor the daughter of the Chief Justice was entitled to have their travel expenses or any travel allowances paid for out of the funds of the Judicial Service,” part of Ofori’s petition reads.

The third petition, filed by ACP Ayamga Yakubu Akolgo, accuses Justice Torkornoo of violating judicial ethics and calls for her removal.

The senior police officer claims in his petition that the Chief Justice abused her power by wrongly causing his arrest and detention.

“She abused the sacred judicial office by wrongly causing my arrest and detention. The arrest and detention were capricious, unreasonable, unilateral, and without justification, constituting stated misbehaviour and incompetence as provided in Article 146(1) of the Constitution. The arrest and detention infringed on my rights, dignity, and caused pain, trauma, and humiliation,” his petition states.

Arrogance of power, E-Levy, DDEP contributed to our loss in 2024 – Bawumia

0

The 2024 Presidential Candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has attributed the party’s defeat in the 2024 general elections to several factors, including the arrogance of power, the high cost of living, the failure to reshuffle government officials, the introduction of the E-Levy, and the controversial haircut policy.

According to him, these challenges left many Ghanaians struggling, particularly amid the IMF debt restructuring programme.

Dr. Bawumia made these remarks at the auditorium of Takoradi Technical University during the launch of his nationwide Thank You Tour.

Addressing claims that blamed the party’s defeat solely on his perceived religious affiliations, Dr. Bawumia emphasized that internal divisions and numerous uncompleted projects also contributed significantly to the NPP’s loss.

“When you study all the reports we have so far, certain factors were highlighted. These include the high cost of living; the prices of goods and services went up and left many Ghanaians struggling. Another factor that was highlighted is the arrogance of power, we were not willing to listen.

“The party members told us to conduct a reshuffle, but after eight years we didn’t listen. The party members told us they didn’t want E-levy, but we implemented it. Again, the party members told us that the DDEP was going to be a major challenge but we went ahead to implement it.

“Things were bad, and we were not able to pay NABCO, those employed under youth and afforestation, caterers and others were also not being paid,” he explained.

Dr. Bawumia also cited a lack of effective campaigning in key regions, saying, “Even in the regions that give us some vote, we didn’t put in a lot of work there. Western Region is an example.”

He further stressed that internal disunity weakened the party’s campaign efforts, allowing the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) to exploit their mistakes.

“So, going into the 2024 general election, the NPP as a party was not fully united. The opposition at the time, the NDC, even though didn’t have a campaign message, was playing back our language against each other back to us. That is why it is important that as we go about with our campaign, you don’t bring down your opponent so that you can win,” he stated.

IMF Boss commends Ato Forson for strong commitment to economic reforms

0

The Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Kristalina Georgieva, has commended Ghana’s Minister for Finance, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, and his team for their “strong commitment to the Fund-supported program and reforms aimed at restoring macroeconomic stability.”

During a meeting on Saturday, Georgieva praised the leadership shown by Dr. Forson, noting the significant progress Ghana has made under challenging circumstances. She reaffirmed the IMF’s continued support for the country, stating, “The IMF remains a strong partner of Ghana.”

This high-level endorsement follows the announcement that Ghana has reached a staff-level agreement with the IMF on the fourth review of the Fund-supported program.

Once formally approved by the IMF Executive Board, the agreement will pave the way for the disbursement of approximately 370 million dollars to Ghana.

The achievement is particularly remarkable given that, before the new government assumed office, several structural benchmarks and quantitative targets under the program had been breached.

The breakthrough reflects the aggressive and focused efforts of the Mahama administration to reverse the economic situation and restore confidence in Ghana’s financial management.

Since taking office, the government has accelerated the implementation of structural reforms, delivering results ahead of schedule and bolstering optimism about Ghana’s economic prospects.

A major focus of the administration’s reform agenda has been the resolution of the large accumulation of payables in 2024, which had contributed to a significant primary deficit instead of the modest surplus originally targeted.

To address this, the government has introduced a range of bold and pragmatic measures aimed at strengthening spending controls, restoring budget credibility, and ensuring fiscal and debt sustainability.

In addition to these reforms, the government has already completed a number of structural benchmarks that were originally scheduled for completion at the end of December 2024 and March 2025, underlining its strong commitment to economic recovery.

Also in attendance were the governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr. Johnson Asiama, Senior Economic Advisor, Seth Tekper and the chairman of the National Development Planning Commission, Dr. Nii Moi Thompson.

My chemistry with Uzor Arukwe as Achalugo was real – Bambam

0

Actress, singer, entrepreneur and former Big Brother Naija contestant, Bamike Olawunmi-Adenibuyan, aka BamBam, tells FAITH AJAYI about her journey into the entertainment industry and how acting is more than just a career for her

Let’s start with your YouTube blockbuster, ‘Love in Every Word’, which is now seen as a major career highlight for you. How do you feel about the success of the movie?

I feel incredibly grateful. Seeing how it has resonated with many people is humbling. It is proof that when a story is told with heart, people will connect with it. The love and feedback have been overwhelming, and I couldn’t be prouder of the work we did.

Can you briefly take us through the start of your journey with the production, and what was the experience like working with Omoni Oboli?

From the first script reading, I knew the movie was special. The story had depth, and I was excited about the challenge. Working with Omoni Oboli was a blessing. She’s not just a phenomenal actress but also a brilliant director and mentor. Her passion is contagious, and she creates a space where you can bring your best self to the character.

You’ve featured in quite a number of films. What would you attribute to ‘Love in Every Word’ that made it great and resonate with a wider audience?

I think it’s the authenticity of the story. It wasn’t just another love story; it was about the power of words, unspoken emotions, and the depth of human connection. Also, the chemistry between the cast was real; we lived those moments, and I believe the audience could feel that.

I also acted in ‘A Case for the Heart’, and that film was a defining moment for me. It was my first movie on Omoni Oboli TV, and I had the honour of “sparring” with the legendary Majid Michel. The storyline was unique, and working with such an excellent co-star pushed me to new heights as an actress.

Another one was ‘Seasoned with Love’. That movie allowed me to explore a different side of my acting range. The depth of emotions and the storytelling made it a beautiful experience. Likewise, my first Netflix film—‘Collision Course’— as a female lead, truly tested my range as an actor. The film carries a powerful message, and being part of it was both challenging and rewarding.

How has your journey shaped the way you take on new opportunities?

It has taught me to be intentional. Not every opportunity is meant for me, and that’s okay. I have learnt to trust my instincts, align with projects that reflect my values, and challenge myself with roles that push my limits.

What other career path would you have taken outside of entertainment, and why?

Philanthropy and activism, for sure. I have a heart for people, and I love creating impact. Whether it’s through storytelling or direct outreach, I want to be part of something bigger than myself.

Beyond acting, are there other aspects of the entertainment industry that interest you?

Acting has always been my first love, but music and dance have been parts of me for as long as I can remember. Each one feeds into the other. Music helps me express emotions, dance connects me to my body, and acting allows me to bring stories to life.

What influenced your journey into the entertainment industry?

My journey started with a passion for performance. Years ago, I auditioned for MTN Project Fame because I wanted to pursue music, but my nerves got the best of me, and I didn’t make it into the house. Still, I didn’t give up. I worked as a backup vocalist for Gospel on the Beat for a few months and also sang for a few gospel artistes.

Knowing that I needed proper training as an actor, I enrolled in the Royal Arts Academy, where I earned a diploma in stage and TV acting. I trained in theatre and was one of the best graduating students. After that, Emem Isong and Uduak Isong featured me in a few of their films.

Wanting more visibility, I auditioned for Big Brother Naija to showcase my talent to a wider audience of producers and directors. After the show, Bolanle Austen-Peters Productions took a chance on me when I auditioned for ‘Moremi the Musical’ and later ‘Fela and the Kalakuta Queens’, which ran in Lagos and South Africa.

But after having two daughters, the acting gigs slowed down. I wasn’t getting roles, so I decided to take matters into my own hands. I started reaching out to producers directly. Only Omoni Oboli responded, and that one response changed everything. Today, I’ve done over six movies on her channel alone, and the journey is just beginning!

How do you juggle your roles and still stay true to yourself in an industry that is constantly evolving?

What excites me the most as an artist is the ability to move people to make them laugh, cry, or see the world differently. That connection is what keeps me going.

Life itself is my biggest inspiration— real stories, raw emotions, and the beauty of human relationships. I see every script as a privilege, a chance to step into someone else’s shoes and bring their story to life. My approach is deeply emotional, much like (Konstantin) Stanislavski’s system, where I fully connect with the character’s experiences and emotions during a performance but switch back to myself afterwards.

I don’t carry my characters with me off-screen, but in the moment, I become them. This balance allows me to deliver an authentic performance while staying grounded in my own reality.

You’ve been working nonstop for months and are now on a break. How are you adjusting to the downtime, and what does rest look like for you?

It’s a bit of an adjustment, to be honest. I’m so used to the grind that having free time feels strange. But, I’m learning to embrace rest, be still, reflect, and reconnect with myself. Rest for me looks like spending time with family, reading, praying, and just being present in the moment.

Pope Francis laid to rest in Rome

0

Pope Francis has been buried in Rome after a funeral ceremony and procession attended by hundreds of thousands of people and many heads of state.

The first South American pontiff passed away on Monday aged 88, marking the end of a 12-year pontificate.

As the Italian capital woke up to a hazy morning, teenage pilgrims, nuns and priests of all denominations filed silently down the streets leading to the Vatican.

Many of the streets around St Peter’s Basilica were closed – both to allow the flow of visitors and for security reasons, as more than a hundred foreign dignitaries were expected to join the funeral mass.

More than 8,000 Italian police of different branches were out in force, as well as firefighters, medics, canine unit handlers, volunteers, members of the armed forces and even park guards.

Many had been called in from all sides of Italy to be in Rome today – resulting in a rather joyous blend of accents from across the country, from the Sicilian to the Milanese.

By 08:00 local time (06:00 GMT) much of the square was already full.

Jessica, 22 and from Mexico, and Cyril, 20 and from the US, had arrived at dawn to secure a front row spot to the funeral mass.

“We never thought we’d be this close. We sacrificed a little sleep to be here but it’s worth it,” said Jessica.

She’s a Catholic and said her relatives in Mexico would “never believe it” when she told them she had been at the Vatican for the Pope’s funeral.

As heads of state and foreign dignitaries took their places to the right of the altar, hundreds of photographers in the press area on the roof of the colonnade snapped their cameras furiously, hoping to capture a candid image of US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, whose last meeting in February gave rise to a combative exchange in the Oval Office.

But soon after, as a striking photo of the two men sitting on two chairs inside St Peter’s began to circulate, it emerged that they had already met for around 15 minutes before the service began.

Later, Zelensky said the meeting “had potential to become historic, if we achieve joint results”.

No more details were shared, but some on social media later joked that, given the setting, the meeting had been a “miracle”.

Photos showed that UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Trump, Zelensky and French President Emmanuel Macron had also all met in the Vatican.

From the bright red of the clergy’s habits to the muted grey and blue of nuns’ veils to the rainbow sun hats worn by pilgrims, all morning St Peter’s Square was a riot of colours glistening in the sun.

Hymns played out on giant speakers, occasionally drowned out by the sound of helicopters flying overhead, as drones and seagulls crisscrossed over Michelangelo’s dome.

Yet the voice of 91-year-old Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re rang loud and clear as he presided over the mass.

The service’s structure was very similar to that of any Catholic funeral mass, although the readings were done in many different languages and all hymns were sung in Latin.

Outside St Peter’s, a crowd the Vatican later said numbered 200,000 applauded as large screens showed Zelensky take his seat. There was also applause when the Pope’s simple wooden coffin was brought out.

The crowd’s applause marked some other salient moments – such as when Cardinal Re, as part of his homily, remembered the Pope’s commitment to migrants and peace.

He mentioned that the Pope’s first trip had been to the Italian island of Lampedusa, the port of arrival in Europe for many migrants who make the perilous journey across the Mediterranean, and recalled the mass the Pope celebrated at the US-Mexico border.

“War, he said, results in the death of people and the destruction of homes, hospitals and schools. War always leaves the world worse than it was before: it is always a painful and tragic defeat for everyone.”

The cardinal emphasised that Pope Francis had repeatedly urged the world to “build bridges, not walls”.

“It was good to hear that on a day when so many heads of state were on St Peter’s Square,” a woman called Maria told the BBC. She and her friend Grazia had flown in from Sardinia especially for the funeral.

“It was a message especially for them, I think, because it’s them who decide whether there’s going to be war or peace, not us… Let’s hope something made it through to them.”

“Otherwise them being here was just pure hypocrisy,” added Grazia.

During communion, a procession of white-clad priests made its way down St Peter’s Square, carrying golden chalices full of wafers for communion, as many in the large crowd moved forward to receive the hosts.

Soon after, Cardinal Re blessed the Pope’s coffin with holy water, before burning incense in a thurible – a symbol of cleansing – and the basilica’s bells tolled three times after the blessing of the coffin was carried out.

After some brief mingling, world leaders started making their way out of the basilica. Their motorcades then filed out of the Vatican.

Within an hour Trump was reported to be back on Air Force One, while other leaders held various informal meetings in Rome.

Meanwhile, the Pope’s coffin was carried through Rome in a slow procession to the church of Santa Maria Maggiore for burial.

Authorities said 140,000 had lined the streets, clapping and waving as the hearse – a repurposed white popemobile – crossed the Tiber river and drove past some of Rome’s most recognisable sights: the Colosseum, the Forum and the Altare della Patria national monument on Piazza Venezia.

Once the coffin reached Santa Maria Maggiore, it was taken inside and the live broadcast ceased.

Pope Francis was buried in the righthand side of the church, near a beloved icon of the Virgin Mary, at around 15:00.

Visitors, pilgrims and the clergy vacated St Peter’s Square quickly. Many could be seen minutes later in the numerous cafes, restaurants and pizzerias of the historic Borgo Pio neighbourhood nearby.

Grazia from Sardinia said the funeral had made a big impression on her.

“It was wonderful to meet in a single square with people who come from every corner of the world and to live a shared moment. This is the legacy of the Pope,” she said.

Officials said the day had unfolded without any major incidents.

“Four hundred thousand people shared a historic and emotional moment, and thanks to everyone’s commitment the day took place in a solemn and serene way, without critical issues,” said the head of the Civil Protection, Fabio Ciciliano.

The city of Rome and the Catholics of the world will now be preparing for the next momentous event – the conclave, which will select the next Pope.

A date has not yet been set but it is thought it could start as early as 5 or 6 May, after the Novemdiales – the mandatory nine days of mourning – are over.

With 135 cardinals set to attend, it will be the largest conclave in modern history and one of the most unpredictable.

Over the past few days, cardinals wandering around Rome were hounded by journalists trying to get a steer on what the conclave might yield.

After the funeral, too, the Cardinal of Tonga Soane Patita Paini Mafi was approached by the media as he made his way out of St Peter’s Square.

After a South American pope, is it time for an Asian one, he was asked.

Cardinal Mafi laughed and pointed to the sky. “Only He knows,” he said.

A number of New Patriotic Party members in the Western Region have responded to a call by former Member of Parliament for Assin Central Constituency, Kennedy Agyapong, that the party should show amnesty to its defectors.

Speaking in Takoradi during former Vice President of Ghana, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s “Thank You” tour, Kennedy Agyapong stunned the party’s supporters when he asked to have mercy on former Minister of Trade, Alan Kyerematen, who quit the NPP to form his own political movement as well as a former National Chairman of the party, Paul Afoko, and others whose misconduct led the NPP to suspend them.

Some NPP members expressed their displeasure with Kennedy’s plea.

“No way! This cannot happen. No, it cannot happen,” an angry supporter reacted.

Other supporters, who kicked against Kennedy Agyapong’s proposal, described those who turned their back on the NPP as “saboteurs and traitors.”

“How can anyone who means well for the NPP suggest that we should bring back people who stood against our party and were rightly suspended. These people are saboteurs,” a female supporter expressed her disappointment.

A constituency executive also said; “I totally disagree with Ken and he should stop this because it is making some of us angry.”

“This is somebody who has left this party twice on his own. On the second time, he contested our primaries and left after he didn’t win. He didn’t only leave, he formed a movement and joined the NDC to campaign against us. Is this the person Kennedy Agyapong wants the party to bring back?. Madam President queried whether it would not be better if the Chief Justice waived her right to the in camera proceedings. Her speech was well recieved and she received a standing ovation.

GBA president Ghartey raises possibility of public hearing of petition to remove Chief Justice

0

President of the Ghana Bar Association, Efua Ghartey President of the Ghana Bar Association, Efua Ghartey

The President of the Ghana Bar Association, Mrs Efua Ghartey, has raised the possibility of a public hearing in the hearing of the petitions to remove the Chief Justice.

She said this at the Mid-Year Review Conference of the Ghana Bar Association in Accra on April 26, 2025.

Efua Ghartey said that in spite of the constitutional provisions which stated that the proceedings should be held in camera, the current circumstances, where the petition and all matters related to it were in the public domain, may serve the country better if the matter were held in public.

Efua Ghartey also commented on the sidelines of the Conference that the purpose of the constitutional provisions for the in-camera hearing had been defeated in this social media era, and justice would not only be done but manifestly be seen to be done if Ghanaians had live televised hearings.

This would rather protect the integrity of the judiciary, she argued.

Since these constitutional provisions were also to protect the person against whom the petition had been made, the President of the GBA posed the question whether the Chief Justice could elect to have a public hearing.

This would amount to the Chief Justice waiving her right to an in-camera hearing.

This Petition involving the removal of the judiciary has captured the media space in Ghana, and the whole country is discussing the petition and its response, which are online.

Arrogance of power, E-Levy, DDEP contributed to our loss in 2024

Bawumia to NPP: Learn from 2024 defeat, guard your utterances

Learn from 2024 defeat, guard your utterances

The 2024 Presidential Candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has attributed the party’s defeat in the 2024 general elections to internal disunity and damaging utterances among its members.

Speaking during his ‘Thank You Tour’ in Takoradi on Saturday, April 26, Dr. Bawumia expressed concern over the party’s internal conflicts in the run-up to the elections, noting that they severely impacted the NPP’s electoral fortunes.

He urged party members to be mindful of their statements during internal elections to avoid harming the party’s unity and prospects in future contests.

“In the lead up to the 2024 elections, there was disunity amongst us. Our utterances against each other also severely affected our fortunes. The NDC didn’t have campaign messages, but capitalised on some of these utterances.

“They advertised our utterances towards the elections in the media, they were playing our own language to us. Let’s be mindful of our utterances during internal elections, to avoid bringing down our opponents,” he pointed out.

TV stations caught airing unauthorised content will have licenses revoked

Executive Secretary of the NFA, Kafui Danku-Pitcher Executive Secretary of the NFA, Kafui Danku-Pitcher

The National Film Authority (NFA) has issued a stern warning to television stations in Ghana over the unauthorised broadcast of films, series, and other creative content, stressing that such acts violate copyright laws and undermine the creative industry.

In a statement released by the Executive Secretary, Kafui Danku-Pitcher, the NFA expressed concern over the increasing complaints from local and international content creators about the illegal airing of their works on Ghanaian TV platforms.

The Authority emphasised that these actions breach the Copyright Act, 2005 (Act 690), which prohibits the public broadcast of protected content without permission from rights holders.

“In recent months, the NFA has received numerous complaints from both Ghanaian and international content owners about the illegal airing of films, series, and other creative works on traditional and digital TV platforms in Ghana. These infringements violate content creators’ rights and discourage investment and creativity in Ghana’s creative industries,” the statement read.

Danku-Pitcher warned that offending TV stations risk license suspension or revocation if found guilty of copyright infringement. The NFA added that it is collaborating with relevant agencies to investigate and take legal action against violators.

“To this end, the Authority is working closely with relevant institutions to investigate and take appropriate actions against television stations that air content without authorisation from the rights owner or rights holder. Offenders risk having their licenses suspended or revoked,” the statement noted.

The Authority urged broadcasters to secure proper licensing agreements before airing content, respect intellectual property rights, and ensure that all films are classified by the NFA before broadcast.

“Ghana’s creative economy holds significant potential for national development, job creation, and international recognition. However, its growth depends on the protection and respect for intellectual property rights.

“The NFA urges all television stations and media platforms to license content legally, fairly compensate creators, and partner in building a thriving and lawful creative industry,” the statement concluded.

Chief blames Forestry Commission for destruction of Gyeanima Forest

0

The Gyeanima Forest Reserve, located in the Sekyere South District of the Ashanti Region, is under siege as unknown individuals continue to clear portions of the protected land for farming activities.

The reserve, which covers a total land area of approximately 15.54 square kilometres, was officially gazetted in 1931 and is one of nine forest reserves managed under the Offinso Forest District.

In an interview with Channel One News, Nana Boakye Yiadom, Chief of the Wiamoase Traditional Area, expressed deep concern over the unchecked clearing of trees in the reserve for agriculture.

He warned that while national attention remains largely focused on the menace of illegal mining, this quieter yet equally devastating form of environmental degradation is being dangerously overlooked.

He accused the Forestry Commission of enabling the destruction of the forest through its inaction and poor oversight.

“I will blame the Forestry Commission because they are supposed to monitor and ensure the trees are not cut down. Some even collaborate with these settlers who cut down the trees and engage in their farming activities. We do not have a Forestry Commission office here, but there are some in neighbouring towns. Though some of the workers live here, their offices are in the neighbouring towns,” he said.

In a response, Edward Nyamaah, Manager of the Forestry Commission for the Offinso Forestry District, refuted allegations of encroachment, explaining that the Gyeanima Forest Reserve contains about 41 admitted farms, which legally permit farming activities within the reserve.

“We have rarely collaborated with the various communities around the various reserves, and we are doing the various plantations within the forest reserve. So it is not true that the area has been encroached by settlers. Rather, we have engaged the communities using both the indigenes and the settlers, and they are doing the plantation for us,” he said.

Bawumia expresses willingness to help unite NPP ahead of 2028 election

0

The 2024 Presidential Candidate of the New Patriotic Party(NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has expressed his willingness to assist in uniting and strengthening its base ahead of the 2028 general elections.

Dr. Bawumia gave the assurance as part of his tour in the Western region accompanied by the NPP national executives and former presidential aspirants.

The tour is to express appreciation to party faithful who worked tirelessly in the 2024 election campaign.

The tour also forms part of the party’s agenda to unite and strengthen its base from the grassroots level to the top, as they seek to bring together dissatisfied members who abstained from the last elections, leading to their defeat.

Speaking in Takoradi, Dr. Bawumia acknowledged that all past presidential candidates of the NPP have embarked on similar tours, following their defeats.

However, he adopted the new style, involving the party executives and past aspirants as part of his efforts to assist in uniting the party.

Dr. Bawumia also emphasised the need to express appreciation, even though the party lost massively in the last elections.

“God has said in all things we should give thanks and also His ways are not our ways. After the election defeat, many have questioned why we are embarking on a thank you tour but it is just to show appreciation to everyone for the selfless service,” he said.

AMMREN commemorates 2025 African vaccination week and child health in Ghana

0

Remarks by the African Media and Malaria Research Network (AMMREN) at a Webinar for Journalists to Commemorate the 2025 African Vaccination Week and Child Health in Ghana.

Presented by Prof Francis. B. Zotor. AMMREN Vice Board Chair.

The Director General of the Ghana Health Service, Prof. Samuel Kaba Akoriyea, the WHO Country Representative, Dr Kwame Amposah Achiano, Programme Manager, Expanded Programme on Immunisation (EPI), Distinguished Partners, Colleagues from the Media and Civil Society, Ladies and Gentlemen, Good morning.

The African Media and Malaria Research Network (AMMREN), is honoured to be co-hosting this special webinar with the EPI and the GHS to commemorate the 2025  African Vaccination Week and Child Health Promotion Week.

This is the first time AMMREN is partnering with the EPI to host such a programme.

This objectives of the Webinar aligns with the goals of the National Media Vaccine Network that was formed last year by AMMREN as an outcome of a collaboration with WHO Ghana.

This year’s theme for the vaccination week, “Every Child deserves a healthy future; invest in your child. Attend ‘weighing regularly,” speaks directly to our shared mission as communicators and storytellers.

Vaccination is one of the most effective public health interventions known to humanity, and yet, its success depends not only on science and logistics, but also on trust, information, and public confidence. And that’s where  journalists come in.

Indeed, vaccination is a crucial public health measure that has helped to eradicate deadly diseases and save millions of lives.  However, vaccine  uptake depends largely on what information is shared.

In an era where misinformation can spread faster than any virus, journalists  have a responsibility not just to report, but to educate, to clarify, and to champion the truth.

Whether it’s countering vaccine myths, sharing personal testimonies, or highlighting the work of frontline health workers, journalists have a pivotal role in shaping the national narrative.

As a proud partner of the EPI, AMMREN is committed to empowering journalists with the right tools and data to tell impactful, evidence-based stories. The webinar today is about reinforcing that commitment. It’s about equipping journalists with insights, deepening their partnership with health experts, and encouraging them to be bold and commited in the coverage of immunisation and child health issues.

As we mark this important week, AMMREN call on all stakeholders—government agencies, health professionals, traditional and religious leaders, civil society and the media to continue working together to strengthen immunisation coverage, particularly in hard-to-reach and underserved communities.

AMMREN urges every journalist on the call today to take up the mantle of Health Champion. Go beyond the press releases.

Tell the stories of mothers walking miles to vaccinate their children. Highlight local successes and persistent gaps. Hold institutions accountable. But do so with compassion, accuracy, and an unwavering focus on public good.

No child should suffer or die from a preventable disease. Every child vaccinated is a step toward a stronger, healthier Ghana.Together, we can build vaccinated, informed, and resilient communities. Thank you—and let’s keep the conversation going.

2024 Elections: NDC played back attacks on our party by our members

Former Vice President of Ghana and 2024 NPP flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia Former Vice President of Ghana and 2024 NPP flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia

Former Vice President and NPP presidential candidate for the 2024 elections, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has cautioned the party members against attacking and speaking ill of one another, especially during their internal elections.

Dr Bawumia, who is currently on a “Thank You Tour” in Takoradi, Western Region, recalled how the NPP gave its opponents, particularly the National Democratic Congress, arsenals through their vitriolic utterances against themselves.

He believed one of the major things that contributed to the NPP’s defeat in the elections was the disparaging comments they made against one another during their internal elections.

Dr Bawumia noted it was their own words that the NDC played back against them to win the 2024 general elections.

In view of this, he urged the party to be united as they aim to return to power in 2028.

“Unity is key in every group endeavour but for the 2024 elections, we faced the internal issues.”

“Some of our own members attacked the party and government publicly and our opponents, the NDC, played back these words by our own members against us through series of adverts in the media.”

“They used the words against us and if the attack is coming from your own members, you can imagine the effect.”

Former Vice President and 2024 New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has lamented the role internal party divisions played in the NPP’s defeat during the 2024 general elections.

Speaking at the launch of his national Thank You Tour in Takoradi on Saturday, Dr. Bawumia noted that public criticisms from some NPP members were weaponised by the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) during the campaign.

“Unity is key in every group endeavour but for the 2024 elections we faced internal issues,” Dr. Bawumia said.

He recounted that certain comments made by NPP members against their own party and government were seized upon by the NDC, who “played back these words by our own members against us through series of adverts in the media.”

“They used the words against us and if the attack is coming from your own members, you can imagine the effect,” he added.

Dr. Bawumia stressed that the lack of a united front seriously undermined the party’s efforts and contributed to its electoral defeat.

He urged NPP stakeholders to prioritise unity going forward, warning that ongoing internal bickering would continue to derail the party’s objectives if not properly addressed.

The Thank You Tour is expected to take Dr. Bawumia to various regions across the country as he engages party faithful and reflects on the lessons of the 2024 electoral loss.

Uganda declares end to latest Ebola outbreak

Uganda has officially declared the end of its latest Ebola outbreak, three months after the first cases emerged in the capital, Kampala.

The Ministry of Health announced the milestone on Saturday via its official X account, calling it “good news” and confirming that 42 days had passed without new infections since the last patient was discharged.

“During this outbreak, 14 cases, 12 confirmed and two not confirmed through laboratory tests [probable], were reported. Four deaths, two confirmed and two probable, occurred. Ten people recovered from the infection,” The World Health Organization (WHO) said in a statement.

WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus applauded the Ugandan Health Ministry for its “leadership and commitment” in overcoming the outbreak. “Congratulations to the government and health workers of #Uganda on ending the #Ebola outbreak,” he said on X on Saturday.

Ebola infections are frequent in Uganda which has many tropical forests that are natural reservoirs for the virus.

The latest outbreak, caused by the Sudan strain of the virus, was detected on January 30 this year when a male nurse contracted the virus and later died. The strain has no approved vaccine.

It was Uganda’s ninth outbreak since the country recorded its first infection in 2000.

Neighbouring the Democratic Republic of the Congo – a country that has experienced more than a dozen outbreaks, including one from 2018 to 2020 which killed nearly 2,300 people – Uganda remains highly vulnerable to the spread of the disease.

The latest outbreak began in Kampala, a bustling city of four million people and a key transit hub linking eastern DRC, Kenya, Rwanda and South Sudan. Health experts say Uganda has been able to leverage on its experience battling the disease over the years to bring them under control relatively quickly.

Ebola is spread through contact with infected bodily fluids and tissues, with symptoms such as severe headache, muscle pain, vomiting blood and internal bleeding.

Thank You Tour a political endorsement of Bawumia

0

A group within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) known as Citizen Eye Ghana has raised concerns over the ongoing Thank You Tour being undertaken by Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and the national executives of the party.

The tour, which began on Wednesday, April 23, 2025, at the party’s headquarters at Asylum Down, is aimed at thanking party supporters following the NPP’s defeat to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the 2024 general elections.

Operating under the theme “In All Things, Give Thanks to God” (1 Thessalonians 5:18), the initiative seeks to foster unity and gratitude across the party’s grassroots.

The tour spans all sixteen regions, with notable events including a three-day gathering in the Ashanti Region from April 29 to May 1, due to its political importance.

The programme is scheduled to conclude in the Central Region on June 4, 2025.

However, Citizen Eye Ghana, in a statement, criticized the tour, describing it as a political strategy to promote Dr. Bawumia rather than a genuine party activity.

“Let us be absolutely clear, the NPP currently has no presidential candidate. Yet, through the packaging of this tour, the party appears to be unofficially crowing Dr Bawumia as its chosen flagbearer, sidelining other aspirants who have contributed meaningfully to the party’s progress and vision.

The group further lamented the use of official party resources to advance what they view as an unfair advantage for Dr. Bawumia.

It is, therefore, calling for fairness and inclusivity within the party, urging the leadership to uphold democratic principles as the NPP charts its path forward.

“This conduct is deeply troubling, the use of the party’s letterhead, platforms, and organisational structure to amplify one aspirant’s visibility is inappropriate, unfair, and fundamentally undemocratic,” the statement added.

I don’t agree threshold for prima facie case against CJ is low – Barker-Vormawor

0

Policy Strategy Advisor at Democracy Hub, Oliver Barker-Vormawor, has strongly contested the assertion by a former Deputy Attorney General, Diana Asonaba Dapaah, that the threshold for establishing a prima facie case against the Chief Justice is low.

Speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile on Saturday, Barker-Vormawor argued that, contrary to the Deputy AG’s claims, the threshold is considerably high, and the legal process demands a robust evidentiary basis before such a case can proceed.

He maintained that, in his view, the allegations currently levelled against the Chief Justice are substantial and, when considered together, meet the necessary requirements to establish a prima facie case.

Barker-Vormawor’s remarks come amid growing public debate over the accountability of judicial figures and the integrity of constitutional processes in the country following petitions to the president to remove the Chief Justice, Gertrude Torkornoo for alleged misconducts.

The president last week suspended the Chief Justice after the establishment of a committee to investigate the petitions against her.

Afro-Arab Group CEO commends Kwahu Business Forum

0

Ambassador Alhaji Salamu Amadu has praised the organisers of the Kwahu Business Forum for establishing a dynamic platform that empowers entrepreneurs and promotes economic development.

He lauded the initiative, describing it as a significant opportunity for emerging entrepreneurs to network, gain exposure, and engage with key industry players.

“This was my first time travelling to Kwahu because of the forum, and I must say that already, two banks have visited me at the Afro-Arab Group Head Office as a direct result of the event,” he revealed, highlighting the immediate business opportunities and partnerships the forum facilitated.

Alhaji Salamu, who is president and founder of the Afro-Arab Group of Companies, a Ghanaian-based firm, stressed that initiatives like the Kwahu Business Forum play a vital role in inspiring and nurturing the next generation of business leaders. “Platforms like this serve as a springboard for emerging entrepreneurs to gain visibility, learn from others, and connect within the business ecosystem,” he noted.

Ambassador Amadu also underscored the importance of expanding the forum’s reach beyond Ghana. He urged the organisers to consider inviting firms from across the African continent to participate in next year’s edition, as a means of advancing regional integration and supporting the Africa Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

“I strongly encourage the organisers to consider bringing in companies from other African nations next year. This will not only broaden business networks but also align with the vision of the AfCFTA. The forum has the potential to become a major platform for intra-African trade,” he stated.

He further observed that the forum’s impact extends beyond commerce, playing a significant role in promoting tourism and stimulating local economies. “The forum will help birth many empowered entrepreneurs and also boost tourism in the area,” he added.

He then commended President John Dramani Mahama and Chief of Staff Julius Debrah for their continued commitment to supporting entrepreneurial development nationwide.

“I’ve heard about Kwahu for many years, but this was my first time travelling there because of the forum,” he said. “I must say I’m truly impressed by the level of organisation, the quality of networking opportunities, and the foresight behind this initiative. It’s a real game-changer for entrepreneurs like myself.”

Known for his strong advocacy for youth empowerment and business development through the Afro-Arab Group, Ambassador Amadu reaffirmed his dedication to supporting initiatives that create growth opportunities for entrepreneurs across Ghana and the African continent.

According to him, he sees the Kwahu Business Forum as part of a broader series of events aimed at stimulating business development, tourism, and regional economic growth within the Kwahu enclave.

Before the Kwahu Business Forum, President John Dramani Mahama renewed his call for sound economic policies that place entrepreneurs at the centre of Ghana’s development agenda.

He stressed the urgent need to unlock opportunities and give meaningful expression to the success of hardworking Ghanaians.

The president noted this in a Facebook post after a three-day visit to Kwahu during the Easter festivities.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Parliamentary Minority Leader, Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin, has also lauded the president for initiating the Kwahu Business Forum, which continues to shape the future of business in Ghana.

Ghana risks being seen as a ‘banana republic’ over key removals – Ken Kuranchie

0

Private legal practitioner Kenneth Kuranchie Private legal practitioner Kenneth Kuranchie

Private legal practitioner Kenneth Kuranchie has asserted that petitions for the removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, the heads of Ghana’s security agencies, and the potential ousting of Electoral Commissioner Jean Mensa have tarnished the country’s image.

According to him, these actions make Ghana appear like an unserious country in the eyes

of the international community.

Speaking in an interview on GHOne TV on April 25, 2025, Kuranchie stated that no serious country removes such high-ranking officials simply due to a change in government.

“It is time that all of us made a very conscious decision to behave well. Anyone observing from afar, watching our country get rid of Electoral Commissioners, Inspectors General of Police, and Chief Justices, would only conclude that we are a banana republic.

“How many times have you heard of the United States, Western European countries, which we aspire to emulate, or Great Britain, removing their commissioners of police?” he quizzed.

Kenneth Kuranchie, who is also the Managing Editor of The Searchlight newspaper, stressed that Ghana must learn the proper democratic practices from advanced nations.

He emphasised that individuals appointed to such high offices must be allowed to serve and retire honorably.

“You get into the position, you grow in the position, you retire from the position. We must learn to adopt that culture,” he said.

On Easter Sunday, April 19, 2025, a momentous meeting took place at the Royal Aklorbordzi Palace in Anloga, Ghana, as the leadership of the Council of Ewe Associations of North America (CEANA), led by President Dr Tsatsu Nyamadi, paid a distinguished courtesy call on His Royal Majesty (HRM) Togbi Sri III, the revered Overlord of the Anlo Kingdom.

Following the successful commissioning of two CEANA projects earlier in the week—a kindergarten school building in Dodome-Awuaisu, Ghana, and a state-of-the-art computer library in Kpalime, Togo, Dr Nyamadi traveled to Anloga to inspect ongoing construction on the Anloga Public Library, another CEANA-sponsored initiative aimed at empowering local communities through education and literacy.

As custom demands, the CEANA delegation was first received by Togbi Zewu IV, Dufiaga of Anloga, and Togbi Tudoabor III, Dufia of Anloga Lashibi, who formally introduced the visitors to HRM Togbi Sri III.

Upon entering the palace, HRM warmly welcomed his guests, acknowledging CEANA’s ongoing contributions to the Eweland and expressing his appreciation for their efforts in fostering unity and progress.

During the meeting, CEANA Public Relations Officer Efo Steve Dei formally presented the purpose of the visit, highlighting the organization’s mission to unite Ewes in North America, promote cultural heritage, and undertake impactful development projects across Ghana, Togo, and Benin.

He noted that the Anloga Public Library, when completed, would mark CEANA’s second major project in the Anlo area, following the construction of a six-classroom block at Vui Zion Primary School.

Dr Nyamadi addressed HRM with deep reverence, thanking him for the audience and emphasising CEANA’s dedication to strengthening Ewe identity and heritage. He called on the Awoamefia to use his royal influence to inspire greater participation in CEANA’s initiatives, stressing that collective efforts and unity among Ewes worldwide are crucial to advancing the socioeconomic development of the Eweland.

HRM Togbi Sri III responded with great admiration for CEANA’s tireless work, acknowledging the challenges of organising and fundraising abroad while consistently channeling resources toward the development of Ewe communities. He pledged his support in amplifying CEANA’s mission and expressed his intent to personally attend a future convention to convey his gratitude and rally further unity among Ewes.

The meeting concluded with mutual commitments to strengthening cultural ties and furthering development efforts. Togbi Zewu IV stressed the importance of involving local chiefs and elders in selecting and planning future projects, ensuring their alignment with community needs.

Rome says farewell to the ‘people’s Pope’

0

The global media attention given to the death of Pope Francis and his funeral, which takes place today, Saturday, April 26, at St Peter’s Basilica, and the obvious affection felt for him by millions of people around the world, will come as no surprise to anyone who watched his 12-year pontificate unfold.

Partly it’s because it has been so long – 20 years – since a pope has died in office.

Benedict retired as Pope in February 2013, and his death nine years later, on 31 December 2022, was overtaken by the new year festivities.

Not since the death of John Paul II, six days after Easter in 2005, have we seen the traditions and rituals of a church mourning its reigning Pope.

Pope Francis lay in state in St Peter’s Basilica in the days before his funeral

But that alone does not explain the reaction of the public. His personality, more than anything else, endeared him to millions of people around the world.

His humility, sense of humour, approachableness, non-judgmental spirit; his willingness to engage in a conversation with the world rather than offer entitled proclamations; and his unpredictability, the sense we all had that he was unscripted and comfortable in his own skin – these were the aspects of Francis’s personality that led some to describe him as “the people’s Pope”.

In fact, many of the traits that could frustrate more conservative Catholics are what earned him a hearing from those outside his Church, those who struggle with faith, and those who have been hurt by religion in one form or another.

One pilgrim in St Peter’s Square told me she “loved” the Pope not because he was Pope but because he didn’t seem like a Pope. He seemed like a simple pastor,” she said, “a wise friend, an older mentor, who walked alongside me”.

Just opposite the church where Pope Francis will be buried after today’s papal funeral, a large banner hangs from a building bearing a hand-painted slogan: “GRAZIE, FRANCESCO”.

The simple choice of words is telling: “Thank you, Francis”. Not “Your Holiness” or even “Holy Father”. Just “Francis”.

The couple dominating Ghana’s Judiciary and Prison Services

0

Acting Chief Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie and his wife, Patience Baffoe-Bonnie, the D-G of Prisons Acting Chief Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie and his wife, Patience Baffoe-Bonnie, the D-G of Prisons

The President of the Republic and the First Lady are often regarded as the most powerful couple in the nation. But are they really?

While the President holds ultimate authority, the First Lady’s role is largely ceremonial, with no executive powers.

There have been many firsts under the government of John Dramani Mahama, but the recent suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo may have created arguably the most powerful couple in Ghana’s history.

Following the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo, the most senior judge on the bench, Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie assumed the role of Acting Chief Justice, making him the head of Ghana’s judiciary.

Just weeks before he assumed this role, Justice Baffoe-Bonnie’s wife, Patience Baffoe-Bonnie, was appointed Director-General of the Ghana Prisons Service, placing her in charge of the administration of the nation’s prisons.

In effect, while the husband supervises the sentencing of individuals, the wife oversees their incarceration – the husband heads the courts, the wife heads the prisons.

Below are brief profiles of Ghana’s “power couple”:

Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie

Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie was called to the Bar in Ghana in 1983. He began his judicial career as a Circuit Court Judge in Kumasi and later served as a High Court Judge in Duayaw Nkwanta. In 2006, he was appointed to the Court of Appeal.

In June 2008, President John Agyekum Kufuor appointed him as a Justice of the Supreme Court of Ghana.

In 2013, he served on the panel of Supreme Court Judges that adjudicated the landmark election petition filed by the New Patriotic Party (NPP), which sought to annul approximately four million votes from the 2012 general elections due to alleged irregularities. The petition was ultimately dismissed.

Born on December 26, 1956, Paul Baffoe-Bonnie began his education at the Goaso Local Authority Primary and Middle Schools, completing his Middle School Leaving Certificate examinations in the late 1960s.

He attended Konongo Odumase Secondary School, where he obtained his GCE Ordinary and Advanced Level certificates between 1969 and 1976. He then proceeded to the University of Ghana and subsequently the Ghana School of Law.

He is also the brother of the late Kwasi Sainti Baffoe-Bonnie, founder of Network Broadcasting Company Limited, which operates Radio Gold.

Patience Baffoe-Bonnie

Patience Baffoe-Bonnie, Director-General of the Ghana Prisons Service, boasts over 36 years of experience in prison administration, having held various managerial, staff, and command positions since joining the service in 1987.

She previously served as Director of Prisons in charge of Services and Director of Technical and Services.

Her other command roles include Officer-In-Charge of James Camp Prison, Greater Accra Regional Commander, Chief Legal Officer, Greater Accra Regional Legal Officer, Welfare Officer, Course Commander, and Adjutant at the Prisons Officers’ Training School.

She has also worked at various facilities, including James Fort Female Prison, Senior Correctional Centre, Kumasi Female Prison, and Sekondi Female Prison.

In addition to her extensive experience in the Prisons Service, Patience Baffoe-Bonnie is also a qualified lawyer. She holds a Postgraduate Law Degree Certificate from the Ghana School of Law and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Social Work and Sociology from the University of Ghana. She is an alumna of Tema Secondary School and Winneba Secondary School.

She actively participates in various organisations, including the Ghana Olympic Committee Women’s Commission, the Women and Children’s Committee of the Ghana Bar Association, and the African Union (AU)

Women Election Observer Group. She is currently the National President of the Prisons Ladies Association.
