A Deputy Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), George Krobea Asante, has opined that the former president, Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo-Addo, is healthier than the many of the youth in the incumbent government.

Mr. Asante argued that the 81-year-old statesman is in better shape compared to many young members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Erling Haaland Sidelined For Up To Seven Weeks With Ankle Injury

Erling Haaland

Manchester City striker Erling Haaland will be out for up to seven weeks after suffering an ankle injury during Sunday’s FA Cup quarter-final win against Bournemouth, manager Pep Guardiola has confirmed.

Haaland, 24, scored the equaliser before being substituted in the 61st minute. He was later seen leaving the Vitality Stadium on crutches with his left ankle in a protective boot.

“The doctors say between five to seven weeks,” Guardiola said. “Hopefully, he will be back before the end of the season and for the Club World Cup.”

City said Haaland will see a specialist but expects him to return later this season. His absence is a blow to City, whose only remaining trophy hope is the FA Cup, following disappointing exits from the Champions League and Carabao Cup, with Liverpool tipped to win the Premier League.

City advanced to the semi-finals with a 2-1 win, keeping their silverware hopes alive.

GJA calls off AGM over lack of quorum

0

By Benjamin A. Commey/Eugenia Otenwaa

Accra, April 2, GNA – The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) on Wednesday called off its 2025 Annual General Meeting (AGM) over its inability to raise quorum to conduct business.

The meeting, initially scheduled for Monday, March 31, 2025, was postponed to Wednesday, April 2, due to the Eid-ul Fitr festivities.

However, on Wednesday, the GJA was compelled to call off the meeting for the second time in three years over lack of quorum.

Article 34(d) of the Association’s Constitution requires that 10 per cent of members in good standing form quorum for the AGM.

With 797 members in good standing, only a little over 30 qualified members were available for the meeting, almost an hour after the scheduled time.

Addressing the members present, Mr Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, the President of the GJA, expressed disappointment over the turn of events, especially the inability to hold the meeting for the second time under the current administration.

He said the Executive was willing and ready to account for their stewardship and make proposals for its growth.

“We have done very well to making ourselves available to account for our stewardship and to engage our members and also open up for any questions, lingering questions for that matter, from our members in order to ensure transparency in the discharge of our duty,” he said.

“We appreciate the fact that the confidence reposed in us by your very good selves cannot be taken for granted, but here is the case, we are unable to form a quorum, and per the constitution, it means we can’t hold AGM.”

He, therefore, called on members to show more commitment and urgency to matters of the Association to help improve its fortunes.

“Colleagues and seniors, I think this is our own. We should always attach some kind of urgency and seriousness when it comes to issues of our beloved Association,” Mr Dwumfour urged.

Mr Kofi Yeboah, the Secretary, GJA, in an interview with the media, said the inability to hold the AGM would negatively affect concerns on key issues of the Association, which needed to be addressed.

These include assault on journalists, welfare of members and the upcoming national election of the Association.

Mr Yeboah noted that even though those concerns could be laid before an Emergency General Meeting (EGM), final decisions may not be constitutional.

“For example, one very important thing we were coming to present to members at the AGM is that when we take the six newly created regions, we have seen that members in those areas are new, and they don’t meet the threshold of a minimum of three years to contest for regional executive power,” he said.

“So, we were coming to put that issue before the AGM, to ask for a waiver, so that if a member in any of those six regions had been a member for, let’s say, two years or one year, the person could still be allowed, because AGM would have given that waiver, a decision would have been taken here.”

“So, as it is now, it would mean that if we are not able to hold the EGM to take a decision like that, those six regions may not even get people who may qualify to contest for the elections. So that is one of the consequences of our inability to hold AGM,” Mr Yeboah explained.

To address the issue of quorum, going forward, Mr Yeboah proposed an amendment of the Association’s constitution to “settle” on a quorum that can be achieved.

“It’s always been a difficult thing to get the quorum to do the business of AGM. It is for us all to think about what we want to do going forward. Do we want to amend the Constitution to settle on a quorum that we believe we can always raise to hold AGM?” he asked.

“It is for us to take a decision on that. So that we may call for a review of the constitution itself, and if we believe it is the way to go…We collectively must take a decision and abide by it.”

ARHR questions government’s silence on free sanitary pad policy implementation

The Alliance for Reproductive Health Rights (ARHR) has raised concerns over the government’s silence regarding the implementation of the free sanitary pad policy.

Speaking to GhanaWeb TV on Wednesday, April 2, 2025, Benjamin Oppong-Twumasi, Program Manager for Policy and Budget Advocacy at ARHR, questioned why the government had not provided updates on how the policy would be implemented, despite its announcement in the 2025 budget.

“I would commend the government for introducing this initiative for our young girls. However, there is still no clear implementation plan for the policy. The government has only informed us about the amount allocated for this policy,” he said.

“I think the Trade Minister recently mentioned that the pads will be locally sourced and manufactured, but we still don’t know which agency or ministry will be responsible for the distribution of these free sanitary pads. We also don’t know how many pads will be given to each girl in school,” he added.

The Minister of Finance, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, announced that the government had allocated GH¢292.4 million to begin the distribution of free sanitary pads to female students in primary and secondary schools.

Presenting the 2025 Budget Statement and Fiscal Policy to Parliament, he explained that the initiative is part of the “Free Sanitary Pads” program, which also covers financial relief for first-year students in public tertiary institutions.

“We have allocated GH¢292.4 million to commence the distribution of free sanitary pads to female students in primary and secondary schools,” he stated.

The distribution of free sanitary pads is a fulfillment of President John Dramani Mahama’s 2024 manifesto promise to support girls in basic and senior high schools.

The initiative aims to address menstrual hygiene challenges and reduce school absenteeism among female students.

Ghana Cedi ranks as the 7th strongest currency in Africa

0

The Bank of Ghana reported that the Cedi depreciated by 5.3% on the interbank market within the first three months of 2025.

However, its decline against the US dollar in the retail market was comparatively lower, standing at nearly 3.0%.

At the top of the rankings was Tunisia’s Dinar, which recorded an exchange rate of 3.09 per US dollar. The Libyan Dinar followed in second place, while Morocco’s Dirham, Botswana’s Pula, Seychelles’ Rupee, and Eritrea’s Nakfa secured the third, fourth, fifth, and sixth positions, respectively.

Ghana’s Cedi claimed the seventh spot, while Lesotho’s Loti, Namibia’s Dollar, and South Africa’s Rand completed the top ten rankings in eighth, ninth, and tenth places, respectively.

Currency stability and economic growth

The top five currencies exhibited a slight appreciation compared to their rankings in the previous month. According to Forbes, a stable and strong currency is a crucial economic asset, particularly for African nations aiming for long-term growth and global competitiveness.

A robust currency serves as a buffer against economic shocks, preserving purchasing power and bolstering investor confidence. One notable example is Kenya’s Shilling, which has remained relatively stable due to consistent foreign inflows from non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and remittances.

The economic outlook for the cedi

Despite its depreciation, the Cedi remains one of the strongest currencies on the continent, reflecting Ghana’s ongoing economic resilience and monetary policies. The government and financial institutions continue to implement measures to maintain currency stability and reduce volatility in the exchange rate.

As Africa’s economic landscape evolves, the strength of national currencies will play a vital role in shaping trade, investment, and overall economic growth in the region.

Enchi court makes U-turn, says ruling was wrong in law

The Enchi District Court in the Western North Region has reversed its earlier ruling on the release of mining equipment seized from illegal miners within the Boin Forest Reserve.

The court, presided over by His Worship Lawrence Buenor Buer, ruled on Wednesday, April 2, 2025, that its initial order was erroneous and lacked jurisdiction.

The case, involving six defendants—four of whom are absent and two declared at large—centers on illegal mining activities, commonly referred to as “galamsey.”

The court acknowledged that its earlier decision on March 28, 2025, to release two Liugong excavators and other mining equipment to their owners for evacuation and relocation, was “wrong in law.”

Upon reviewing the facts and applicable mining laws, the court declared its previous order null and void.

“This District Court, in respect of illegal mining activities, lacks jurisdiction to entertain such matters by making those orders,” stated His Worship Buenor Buer.

The court exercised its inherent powers to set aside the previous ruling and issued a fresh order.

Under the new directive, the court ordered the retrieval of the two excavators and other mining equipment.

These assets are to be handed over to the Enchi Forestry Commission for safekeeping until the proper forum with jurisdiction determines the case.

The police and Forestry Commission have been tasked with tracing, locating, and intercepting the equipment to ensure compliance with the court’s new orders.

Citing legal precedents such as Moshie v. Begyina and Attoh Quarshie v. Okpoti, the court emphasised its authority to correct its own errors to uphold justice and maintain the integrity of the judicial process.

“It is finished” – Ato Forson hails abolition of E-Levy, Betting Tax, others

E-Levy cannot be scrapped instantly without approval

0

MTN Ghana CEO, Stephen Blewett, has clarified that the abolition of the Electronic Transfer Levy (E-Levy) cannot take immediate effect, as it must go through regulatory approval.

His remarks follow President John Dramani Mahama’s assent to legislative bills aimed at scrapping several taxes, including the E-Levy, Betting Tax, and Emissions Tax.

Speaking at MTN House in Accra on April 2, Blewett acknowledged public anticipation but stressed the need for compliance with regulatory procedures.

“There is a process that has to be followed. I can’t abolish E-Levy until I’m told to do it. If I do it ahead of time, the Bank of Ghana will catch me,” he said.

He emphasized that while the government has signaled its intention to remove the levy, telecom operators like MTN must follow official directives before making changes.

Blewett also highlighted the negative impact of the E-Levy on mobile money transactions and expressed optimism that its removal would revitalize the sector.

“The reason for the abolishment of E-Levy is to encourage momentum in mobile money,” he explained.

While acknowledging that the tax removal is expected to boost digital transactions and financial inclusion, he assured that MTN would implement the change only after receiving official instructions.

“We will follow the process. And once it’s gone, mobile money will regain its strength.”

The E-Levy, initially introduced at 1.75% before being reduced to 1%, taxed electronic transactions, including mobile money payments, bank transfers, and inward remittances. Since its introduction in 2022, it has faced widespread criticism, with opponents arguing that it imposed an additional financial burden on citizens and discouraged digital transactions.

Shatta Wale showed me how to make money with my music – Kweku Flick

Explaining how Shatta Wale exposed him to the business side of music, he responded, saying,

“Aside from the music, Shatta Wale directed me on how I could venture into other businesses and invest my money. We met a couple of times, but on all such occasions, he hammered on those pieces of advice.”

Kweku Flick also hinted at an upcoming single with Shatta Wale.

Find out details about Fort William, where there was a children’s dungeon for ‘stubborn kids’

0

Fort William is a one of the physical reminders of the Transatlantic slave trade’s brutal history.

Built by the British in 1753, this fort was specifically designed for slave trading, with an auction room where humans were sold into bondage.

The fort’s layout was designed to maximise efficiency in the slave trade.

Apart from the auction room where slaves were sold, there were also dungeons in which slaves were held for three months before being shipped out.

These dungeons were cramped, and had very poorly ventilated spaces.

And inside the fort, its walls bear witness to the suffering of the millions of slaves who ever passed through it.

In total, there were 466 million slaves shipped to the fort from various parts of Africa, with 381,000 successfully sold into bondage.

In an interview with GhanaWeb’s Etsey Atisu, Theresa, the tour guide at the Fort William, said that the fort’s history is marked by deception, violence, and exploitation.

“Parents were tricked into bringing their stubborn children to be ‘taken care of,’ only to be sold into slavery. Others were forcibly captured from neighbouring countries, including Chad, Mali, and Burkina Faso, and also children from the town,” she indicated.

Theresa also shared that the conditions within the fort were inhumane.

“Female slaves had their bath twice in the month, while the men had their bath once in the month. The women were raped on plantations by their slave masters,” Theresa explained.

She further said that Fort William had a dungeon for children between the ages of 15 to 25 years and 10 to 12 years.

“These children had no hole for ventilation in their dungeon because they were tagged stubborn, and the door of their dungeon was a metal. Once a while, 10 of them are brought out into the sun to take fresh air in chains and are taken back after 10 minutes,” she narrated.

She also stated that the slaves who were rejected during auction were allowed to return to their respective towns, while those who could not return remained in the town of Anomabo with their merchants.

Government owes Zoomlion GH¢1.2 billion for unpaid services – Minister

Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Religious Affairs, Ahmed Ibrahim Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Religious Affairs, Ahmed Ibrahim

The Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Religious Affairs (MLGCRA), Ahmed Ibrahim, has revealed that the government is currently in arrears of a staggering GH¢1.2 billion for waste management services provided by Zoomlion Ghana Limited over the past two years.

Speaking in an interview on Adom TV in Accra on April 1, 2025, the Minister disclosed that the debt, inherited from the previous Akufo-Addo administration, remains a major concern for the current government.

He explained that the debt covers unpaid services to firms under the Environmental Service Providers Association (ESPA), with Zoomlion being the most impacted.

“I have discussed this issue with the Minister of Finance, and it has been confirmed that the state owes Zoomlion GH¢1.2 billion for waste management services that have not been paid for,” Ahmed Ibrahim said.

Despite the growing financial pressure, Ibrahim emphasised the critical role of private companies like Zoomlion in Ghana’s waste management sector and stressed the need for closer collaboration to address the country’s sanitation challenges, particularly in plastic waste recycling.

“We are actively working with Zoomlion to solve the waste management issues across the country. Their cutting-edge infrastructure is essential in handling solid and liquid waste, and they have a crucial role to play, especially in recycling plastic waste,” the minister noted.

Ibrahim lauded Zoomlion for its substantial investments in modern waste treatment and recycling facilities, which he described as unmatched in the country.

He also highlighted that the government lacks the infrastructure necessary to deal with the growing volume of municipal solid and liquid waste, which puts even more pressure on private sector involvement.

“Zoomlion has made huge strides in building advanced waste management systems, but without them, we would be ill-equipped to manage Ghana’s waste problems. Their work in faecal waste management, in particular, has been indispensable,” Ahmed Ibrahim stated.

The minister also warned of a potential nationwide sanitation crisis if Zoomlion were to cease operations.

He recalled the negative environmental and health consequences of improper waste disposal practices, particularly the direct dumping of faecal waste into the sea, a problem that has been largely mitigated by Zoomlion’s liquid waste recycling plants.

“Zoomlion’s plants now process sewage into compost and charcoal, aligning with the ban on sea disposal introduced by former President John Dramani Mahama in 2016,” Ahmed Ibrahim explained.

The minister further urged the government to prioritize sanitation, especially in light of the cholera outbreak that struck coastal regions, including Cape Coast, Winneba, and Takoradi, on October 24, 2023.

However, the forward, who has been keeping fans updated on his recovery, recently shared a video on his Instagram page showcasing his intense gym workouts as he works to regain strength.

In the video, the former Sporting CP player is seen focused on a stationary bike exercise, displaying a joyous mood as he pushed through his workout.

Before his injury, the 21-year-old had become an integral part of Leicester’s quest for survival, contributing two assists in 11 Premier League appearances.

With only nine games remaining in the season, it remains uncertain whether Issahaku can recover in time to help Leicester mount a comeback and secure their place in the league for another season.

Govt owes Zoomlion GH¢1.2bn for waste management services – Minister reveals

0

The Minister of Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Religious Affairs, Ahmed Ibrahim, has disclosed that the government owes Zoomlion Ghana Limited a staggering GH¢1.2 billion for services rendered over the past two years.

Speaking on Adom TV in Accra, the minister addressed concerns over delayed payments to firms under the Environmental Service Providers Association (ESPA), describing the debt—accumulated under the Akufo-Addo administration—as a major challenge for the current government.

Despite the financial strain, he emphasized the need for strong collaboration between the government and private waste management companies like Zoomlion to tackle Ghana’s waste management issues.

“We are collaborating closely with Zoomlion to address waste management challenges in the country, particularly focusing on recycling plastic waste,” he stated.

Ahmed Ibrahim commended Zoomlion for its investments in modern sanitation infrastructure, acknowledging that the government lacks the necessary facilities to handle both solid and liquid waste efficiently.

“Zoomlion’s commitment to building advanced waste management systems across Ghana remains unparalleled,” he noted.

He highlighted Zoomlion’s expanded role beyond waste collection, particularly in faecal waste management, and warned of a potential nationwide sanitation crisis should the company cease operations.

Recalling past practices where faecal waste was dumped directly into the sea, he stressed the environmental and health hazards that such actions posed.

He also pointed out that Zoomlion’s liquid waste recycling plants now process sewage into compost and charcoal, aligning with a 2016 ban on sea disposal introduced by former President John Dramani Mahama.

The minister further called for increased government attention to sanitation, citing a cholera outbreak in coastal regions such as Cape Coast, Winneba, and Takoradi on October 24, 2023. He urged intensified public education on sanitation risks to prevent future health crises.

Niger’s military leaders free ministers, but not ousted president

0

Niger’s military leaders have released more than 50 detainees, including former ministers in the government they toppled in 2023.

Among them are the former ministers of defence, oil and finance, as well as several senior army officers, convicted or accused of plotting previous coups.

Ousted President Mohamed Bazoum, who has been under house arrest since the 2023 military takeover, was not on the list of those released despite international calls for him to be freed.

When the BBC asked about President Bazoum’s continued detention, Justice Minister Aliyou Daouda cited “national security and sovereignty” concerns.

“The question of his release is an internal matter in Niger and only concerns Niger,” Justice Minister Aliyou Daouda told the BBC.

Bazoum is accused of undermining national security and high treason.

The release of the others is among the recommendations of a national conference held in February, along with extending the rule of General Abdourahamane Tiani by five years.

The freed ministers and officials were arrested after the July 2023 coup which brought General Tchiani to power, and had been held for alleged conspiracy to undermine state security and authority.

This move could be an attempt by the junta to reconcile the country and gain popular support.

Similar amnesties have been granted by military governments in Burkina Faso and Guinea.

Since seizing power, General Tchiani’s administration has strengthened relations with Russia and cut ties with France.

It has also urged the ex-colonial power to withdraw its military bases from the country.

Niger’s relations have also soured with its neighbours. Along with Mali and Burkina Faso, where the military has also seized power, it has withdrawn from the West African regional bloc Ecowas.

‘Media Must Increase Mental Health, Special Needs Reporting’

0

The Empowering Better Life Foundations (EBL) has engaged a select group of journalists to advocate for mental health and special needs awareness.

The engagement on Friday, March 28, in Accra themed, “Breaking the Stigma: Responsible and Ethical Reporting on Mental Health and Special Needs,” equipped journalists with knowledge and tools to aid in reporting in a way that is accurate, stigma-free, and inclusive.

The founder and CEO of the foundation, Mrs. Alma Adade-Prempeh, in her remarks, lamented the under-reporting of special needs and mental health stories across various media platforms, leading to the increase in stigmatisation associated with the conditions.

“In our part of the world, we don’t talk much about mental health issues talk less on issues that relate to special needs,” she said.

Mrs. Adade-Prempeh urged media houses to enhance their reporting on mental health stories to increase awareness in the country.

Deputy Head of Communication at the Mental Health Authority, Dr. Josephine Darko, emphasised the importance of proactive measures in maintaining good mental health. She highlighted several positive activities that individuals can undertake to positively influence their mental well-being, which include eating right, exercising among others.

Executive Director of the Special Mothers Project, Hannah Awadzi, appealed to the government to establish specialised schools and create a conducive environment for children with cerebral palsy.

“We are in a country where children with special needs are boxed, meanwhile not all children have the same condition. Government as a matter of urgency must establish schools for children with cerebral palsy,” she said.

She urged journalists to avoid stereotyping individuals with special needs during their reporting, emphasising that each child’s experience is unique and should not be generalised, saying, “Most often when we read stories on the blog on special needs we get demoralised, especially the languages used turn to affect a lot of parents and guardians of these children. We can do better as media.”

NSA Director-General assures crackdown on illegal national service postings

Felix Gyamfi, Director-General of the National Service Authority (NSA) Felix Gyamfi, Director-General of the National Service Authority (NSA)

The Director-General of the National Service Authority (NSA), Felix Gyamfi, has assured the public that security measures have been implemented to curb illegal payments made to influence service postings.

This move follows an investigative report by The Fourth Estate, which uncovered the alleged existence of ghost names in National Service postings.

According to a report by 3news.com on April 2, 2025, Gyamfi emphasised his commitment to cracking down on “special postings,” a term used to describe postings influenced by illegal payments.

“National Service re-posting is just fraud. There will be no additional postings to companies after they have officially communicated the number of service personnel they require. Security measures are in place to detect any unauthorized changes in the system, even down to a single letter,” he assured.

Gyamfi also urged parents and prospective service personnel to accept their assigned postings.

“National Service is not a punishment; it should be something you enjoy doing. I have no malicious intent in posting people to places where they would struggle,” he said.

He further revealed that a full-scale investigation is ongoing to identify those involved in the NSS ghost name scandal.

“The Attorney-General has taken up the matter, and we are awaiting the outcome of the investigation. If I have to take any action after the findings, I will do so without hesitation,” he assured.

The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, has stated that the government is taking multiple steps to track down and secure the missing Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) containers.

He mentioned the involvement of key institutions, including the Attorney General’s Office, to ensure a comprehensive probe and recovery process.

“We have written to the Attorney General to conduct further investigations, with the possibility of taking the matter to court. We’ve also engaged the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) to carry out a proper forensic investigation to determine the whereabouts of the containers,” he said in a video shared on X by TV3 on April 2, 2025.

The minister further noted that he has personally written to the National Security Secretariat to assist in securing the remaining containers to facilitate proper reconciliation.

“I have also personally written to the National Security Secretariat to help us secure the remaining containers so that we can conduct a proper reconciliation,” he stated.

“Since some containers are still stuck at the port, we need to secure them and put them to good use while we pursue those that cannot be accounted for,” he added.

The issue of the missing containers came to light following findings from an investigative report on the state-owned Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).

The report revealed that ECG’s claim of having 2,491 uncleared containers was inaccurate, as an audit showed that only 1,134 containers were actually at the port, leaving 1,347 unaccounted for.

The phrase ‘I love you’ could fuel domestic violence – Research

0

File photo of an unhappy couple File photo of an unhappy couple

A study by Dr. Charles Prempeh, a researcher at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), suggests that the phrase “I love you” could contribute to domestic violence.

The research paper, titled “I” Love “You”, Issues of Love and Domestic Abuse in Accra, Ghana, explores how this commonly used expression may play a role in intimate partner violence.

In the paper, published in the 2025 edition of the Journal of Science and Technology, Dr. Prempeh argues, “The phrase ‘I love you,’ for all its tenderness, centers the self rather than the other, framing love as something one conditionally gives rather than a mutual necessity.”

According to him, the focus should shift from “I love you” to “I need you.”

He suggests that viewing a partner as existentially necessary expressing, “I need you” instead of “I love you”, could encourage more considerate treatment.

As one respondent in his study noted, “When you realize you need someone, you handle them with more caution. You don’t want to break what you rely on.”

Dr. Prempeh further explained that in Ghana, love is often perceived as an emotion, a transaction, or a form of possession.

“This conventional understanding may be perpetuating the very abuse it aims to prevent,” he argued.

He has therefore advocated for a shift from “I love you” to “I need you,” emphasising that acknowledging one’s fundamental incompleteness could be pivotal in reducing domestic abuse.

‘Akufo-Addo’s centralisation of power led to NPP loss in 2024’

Greater Accra Second Regional Vice Chairman of NPP, Eric Nartey Yeboah Greater Accra Second Regional Vice Chairman of NPP, Eric Nartey Yeboah

The Greater Accra Second Regional Vice Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Eric Nartey Yeboah, also known as Chairman Dollar, has blamed the party’s loss in the 2024 general elections on the centralisation of power under former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and his inner circle.

In an exclusive interview on Accra-based Original TV’s Adwenekasa with Kwaku Owusu Adjei, Nartey Yeboah explained that the concentration of power in the hands of Akufo-Addo and his close allies left the NPP’s leadership sidelined, which contributed significantly to the party’s electoral defeat.

He argued that the former president and his family acted as if the party had no role in his election, leading to an alienation of key decision-makers within the NPP.

Nartey Yeboah also explained that most of the decisions affecting the party were made at the presidency without any consultation with the broader leadership.

This approach, Nartey Yeboah said, undermined the party’s unity and ability to function effectively during the election campaign.

He further said that the arrogance of some of the president’s appointees, coupled with their disregard for the party’s leadership, played a role in the downfall of the NPP.

He cite an example of Opoku Ahweneeeh Danquah, for instance, who was appointed to the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC), who, after the NPP’s loss, reportedly returned to London and showed no commitment to the party’s cause.

“These are people who did not play a role in the formation of the party, yet they were given juicy appointments and never served the party’s interests,” he added.

Olanrewaju passed out during the bout Olanrewaju passed out during the bout

Nigerian boxer Gabriel Olanrewaju tragically passed away after collapsing during a boxing bout on Saturday, March 29, 2025, at the Bukom Boxing Arena.

The former West African light-heavyweight champion was competing against Ghana’s Jon Mbanugu in an eight-round contest at the Boxing Promotions event.

During Round 3, Olanrewaju suddenly leaned on the ropes, prompting ringside physicians and paramedics from the National Ambulance Service to administer first aid before rushing him to Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.

While initial reports claimed Olanrewaju died before arriving at the hospital, Mohammed Amin Lamptey, Communications Director of the Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA), provided chilling details of his final moments, countering those claims.

In an interview with UTV, Lamptey revealed that paramedics partially resuscitated Olanrewaju before transporting him to the hospital, where he was later pronounced dead despite receiving oxygen.

“The referee called the ringside physician, who then summoned the National Ambulance Service. They resuscitated him, transferred him to Korle Bu, and took him straight to the emergency department. He was put on oxygen, but after 30 minutes, he died,” Lamptey explained.

Lamptey also addressed misinformation suggesting that Olanrewaju had died in the ring.

“Let’s correct some misinformation out there. People are reporting that he died at the boxing arena, but that’s false. He didn’t die in the ring,” he added.

Ntim Fordjour requests joint briefing by National Security, NIB, CID and Narcotics Control Commission in Parliament

0

Ranking Member of Parliament’s Defence and Interior Committee, Rev. John Ntim Fordjour

Rev John Ntim Fordjour, the Ranking Member of Ghana’s Parliamentary Committee on Defence and Interior, has formally requested a high-level security briefing on crucial national security matters.

In a letter addressed to the Committee’s Chairman, he urged the Committee to summon key security agencies, including National Security, the Police CID, the Narcotics Control Commission, and the National Investigations Bureau, to appear before Parliament on 7 April 2025.

The briefing, in his view, will help to update the Committee on ongoing investigations into major security breaches that have raised public concern.

Citing a series of alarming incidents, Rev Ntim Fordjour emphasised the need for transparency and accountability in handling matters of national security.

“The purpose of this proposed meeting is to afford the agencies the opportunity to brief the Committee and provide updates on investigations being conducted into high-profile reported incidents of serious and urgent public interest,” he wrote.

Among the incidents highlighted were the National Security operation in Sapeiman on 9 February 2025, which uncovered twelve 20-foot containers loaded with gold bars and currencies, as well as two massive cocaine busts valued at $350 million and $120 million, respectively, in March.

The letter also drew attention to two suspicious flights, AirMed Flight N823AM and Cavok Air Antonov An-12B, which landed at Kotoka International Airport from Gran Canaria on separate dates in March.

Rev Ntim Fordjour noted that both aircraft departed back to Gran Canaria on 25 March under questionable circumstances, and he pressed for clarity on the nature of their cargo.

Given the gravity of these issues, he stressed the urgency of obtaining comprehensive briefings from the relevant security agencies to determine the full extent of any illicit activities and their implications for national security.

Beyond merely receiving updates, the Committee intends to actively contribute to the ongoing investigations by providing relevant intelligence and recommendations.

“The Committee would also volunteer information that will be useful for the security agencies in the conduct of their investigations into the specific matters under reference,” the Ranking Member stated.

Mr Odoom was a member of a panel that discussed: “Shrinking Aid & Disability Inclusion” at the Global Disability Summit (GDS) 2025.

The Global Disability Summit is underway in Berlin, Germany.

Chief Executive Officer of GTA, Maame Efua Houadjeto Chief Executive Officer of GTA, Maame Efua Houadjeto

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA), Maame Efua Houadjeto, has recounted the trauma her father endured during a coup d’état staged by the late former president, Jerry John Rawlings.

In an interview with JoyPrime on April 2, 2025, Maame Efua shared the harrowing incident involving her father and some military officers during the coup, where he was nearly killed.

She explained that during the coup, her father was tied up with another medical doctor, and both were thrown over a hill

“My parents will sing differently, but I just had to understand what came with it. We were in Tamale, and he was he charge of the military hospital during the coup; it was the other ranks that traumatised the senior officers. With him, that was tough because he was bundled with another doctor and was taken to this hill in Tamale, and got them rolling down the hill.

Maame Efua Houadjeto added, “My father couldn’t stop thanking God because he said they were about shooting and somebody spared their lives. As children, even though we felt their pain, it wasn’t like how they went through,” she said.

When asked if she had forgiven the late former president, Maame Efua confirmed that she had, and added that she even grew to like him.

“Sometimes you just have to let the past go. Funny enough, former President Rawlings was one of my favourite people. I somehow forgave him and grew to love him. He is also a very humble person because he kept on saying he needed to see my father and apologised to him.

“There was he gave my father the opportunity to serve in government, but my father said he is a medical officer and doesn’t want to do politics. It was easy to forgive him,” she added.

Let’s create a world where individuals with autism can thrive – Autism advocate

Nana Yaa Ohenewaa Kuffuor, daughter of Mary Amoah Kuffuor defying odds despite battling autism Nana Yaa Ohenewaa Kuffuor, daughter of Mary Amoah Kuffuor defying odds despite battling autism

Mary Amoah Kuffuor, an advocate for autism, which is a neurological disorder that impairs communication and interaction abilities, has called for the creation of a Ghanaian society that embraces and accepts individuals living with autism.

In a statement raising awareness for autism on the occasion of World Autism Day, on April 2, 2025, Mary Amoah Kuffuor, who has an autistic daughter who defies expectations despite her condition, emphasised the importance of fostering an inclusive society.

She explained that such a society, one that embraces and recognises the values, worth, and contributions of individuals with autism, will make significant progress in overcoming stereotypes and promoting positive change.

Kuffuor also shared the struggles associated with the medical condition but said that the strong bond within their family, along with the love and dedication to supporting her daughter, has helped them overcome these challenges.

“But our journey hasn’t been without its struggles. There have been times when we’ve felt isolated, misunderstood, and overwhelmed. Times when we’ve wondered if we’re doing enough, if we’re making a difference. But through it all, our love for our daughter has remained constant.

“As a family, we’ve made a commitment to accept the challenges that come with autism, and to support our daughter every step of the way. We’ve learned to communicate in her language, to see the world through her eyes, and to celebrate her unique gifts and talents,” she said in a statement.

Read her statement below:/b>

Today, we celebrate World Autism Day, a day dedicated to raising awareness and promoting acceptance of individuals with autism. As a parent of a beautiful daughter with autism, I’ve had a front-row seat to the challenges and joys that come with this journey.

Autism has touched our family in ways we never could have imagined. It’s brought us to our knees in frustration, but also to our feet in celebration. It’s taught us patience, empathy, and unconditional love. And it’s shown us that with acceptance and support, individuals with autism can thrive.

But our journey hasn’t been without its struggles. There have been times when we’ve felt isolated, misunderstood, and overwhelmed. Times when we’ve wondered if we’re doing enough, if we’re making a difference. But through it all, our love for our daughter has remained constant.

As a family, we’ve made a commitment to accept the challenges that come with autism, and to support our daughter every step of the way. We’ve learned to communicate in her language, to see the world through her eyes, and to celebrate her unique gifts and talents.

But we can’t do it alone. We need a community that accepts and includes individuals with autism. A community that recognizes their value, their worth, and their contributions. A community that provides opportunities for education, employment, and socialisation.

So today, on World Autism Day, I urge you to join us in promoting acceptance and inclusion. Let’s break down barriers, challenge stereotypes, and create a world where individuals with autism can thrive.

Let’s show our love, our support, and our commitment to individuals with autism. Let’s celebrate their differences, and recognise that they are not disabilities, but rather unique abilities.

Together, we can create a world that is more accepting, more inclusive, and more loving. A world where individuals with autism can live, learn, and thrive.

Treat Women With Respect – Muslims Urged

0

Members of the Yoruba community partaking in the street carnival in Accra

During his sermon on Eid-Ul-Fitr day last Sunday, the Imam of a mosque in Alajo, Accra, Sheikh Haruna Yahaya urged Muslims to treat women with respect because, according to him, they are God’s special creations.

Women, he said, bear children who are nurtured to grow into useful personalities for society. Such children, depending upon the prevailing circumstances where they grow, could become good or bad.

It behooves men to take good care of their wives so that they can perform their roles without let or hindrance, he stressed.

Imam Haruna added that all those who took part in the Ramadan fasting and ended it all with a feast should be especially grateful to God because others were not given such a privilege by their Maker.

This year’s Eid spanned over a period of two days for the first time since such occasions have been declared holidays.

In Accra Central, as has been the case for about a century, Muslims in Cowlane, Zongolane and Tudu converged at the area on the backside of the Accra Technical University to mount horses for a street carnival.

It was a carnival of colours as each ethnic head or chief had following them members of their tribes.

The reenactment of a practice steeped in the city’s history had Chief Abdul Rashid Brimah leading the Yorubas, and a representative of the English family leading the Hausas, as was somebody at the head of the Fulanis from the Danbaki family.

Although the Main Eid congregational open space prayers were held at the Independence Square on Monday, others decided to pray on Sunday at various locations across the city and other parts of the country.

Gov’t Agencies In Hot Soup As Jinapor Demands Them To Pay Pending Bills Or He Will Cut Power Supply

0

The Minister of Energy, John Abdulai Jinapor, has issued a strong warning to state-owned institutions indebted to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), urging them to settle their outstanding debts or face disconnection.

This directive is part of efforts to address ECG’s financial difficulties and promote accountability in the management of state resources as reported by Ghana Web.

Jinapor’s statement comes at a time when ECG is embroiled in a controversy over missing containers at the Tema Port, raising concerns about corruption and mismanagement within the power sector.

Speaking in an interview with GHOne TV, he pointed out that various state institutions, including Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs), have failed to meet their electricity bill obligations.

“A lot of the MMDAs are not paying. You, the ordinary Ghanaian, are paying, so MMDAs ought to pay as well. If they continue like this, we will cut their supply,” Jinapor emphasized.

One of the most notable defaulters is Ghana Water Company, which, according to Jinapor, has not made any payments despite generating revenue from water sales.

The Minister disclosed that he had written to President John Mahama regarding the matter, urging a review of Ghana Water’s procurement processes to enhance cost efficiency.

The warning extends beyond MMDAs and Ghana Water, as institutions such as Parliament and the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) have also been cited for non-payment.

These organizations will be required to present concrete payment plans to prevent disruptions in their electricity supply.

The Minister’s call for prompt payment underscores the broader issue of financial sustainability in Ghana’s energy sector.

If left unaddressed, the continuous defaulting by state institutions could have long-term repercussions on the country’s power supply and overall economic stability.

As the government seeks solutions, stakeholders in the energy sector will be closely monitoring the response of these institutions to Jinapor’s directive.

Ensuring timely payments and transparency in procurement processes could go a long way in stabilizing ECG’s operations and restoring public confidence in the management of Ghana’s power resources.

Fidelity Bank demonstrates resilience despite challenges – MD

FIDELITY Bank has demonstrated resilience in the face of considerable challenges, such as a fragile economy, increasing loss provisions, and a changing regulatory environment, particularly the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme that has impacted the sector in recent years, Mr Julian Opuni, Managing Director of Fidelity Bank, has stated.

With GH¢700K in grants and up to GH¢1 million in concessionary loans, we are scaling support for youth-led innovation and sustainable enterprises in the agriculture sector,” he elaborated.

The bank, he said, recognised the immense potential of Ghana’s creative economy.

0

By Iddi Yire

Accra, April 02, GNA – President John Dramani Mahama on Wednesday, signed into law the Earmarked Funds Capping and Realignment (Amendment) Bill, 2025.

The objective of the Bill, is to amend the Schedule to the Earmarked Funds Capping and Realignment Act, 2017 (Act 947), to expunge from the Schedule of the National Health Insurance Fund, Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund), Road Fund, Mineral Income Investment Fund, Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund, and transfers to the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation from petroleum revenue.

The uncapping of the GETFund will ensure the availability of dedicated funds for financing free secondary and tertiary education for Persons with Disabilities.

The sources of revenue for the Mineral Income Investment Fund, the Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund, and the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation have been restructured.

GJA unable to hold AGM due to lack of quorum

0

The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) was unable to hold its Annual General Meeting (AGM) as required by its constitution due to a lack of quorum.

According to Article 34 of the GJA constitution, at least 10% of all members in good standing must be present for the meeting to proceed. However, this requirement was not met, leading to the cancellation of the AGM.

Addressing members present at the cancelled meeting on Wednesday, April 2, GJA President Albert Kwabena Dwumfour expressed concern over the low turnout and urged members to take the AGM more seriously.

“This is our association, and we should treat issues concerning it with urgency and seriousness. We have made ourselves available to account for our stewardship, engage our members, and ensure transparency in our duties. We appreciate the confidence you have placed in us, and we do not take it for granted,” he stated.

He further acknowledged the constitutional requirement for a quorum and assured members that efforts would be made to convene an emergency meeting before the end of his tenure.

“We will make a conscious effort to hold the AGM before our tenure ends,” he assured.

The silent crisis of neglect, poverty, and systemic failure

Can a woman’s tender care cease towards the child she bears? Yes, she may be forgetful!

A mother’s love is often deemed the most unwavering force, yet even the most innate instincts can be overshadowed by hardship, neglect, or systemic failure.

In Ghana, the absence of a robust social welfare framework for children has left many vulnerable to poverty, abuse, and neglect; betrayed not by their parents but by the very structures meant to safeguard their well-being.

Healthcare is bad to say the least. The National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), intended to provide affordable healthcare, often fails children from low-income families due to delays in service delivery, lack of essential drugs, and bureaucratic bottlenecks.

Children living with disabilities or chronic illnesses receive even less attention, with limited specialized care available. A mother puts her 14-year-old son with cerebral on a back, takes public transport, comes to the hospital, and waits in a queue for review. The hospital, the public transport are all no access friendly.

The streets of Accra, Kumasi, and other urban centers tell the starkest story. The growing number of street children, many abandoned, trafficked, or forced into survival on their own. This exposes the deep cracks in the nation’s safety net.

Without intervention, they become easy prey for abuse, drugs, and crime, their childhood lost to the indifference of a system that looks but does not see.

Can a nation’s tender care cease towards the child it bears? It should not. Yet, Ghana’s children remain among the most vulnerable, not for lack of policy but for lack of will and action.

If the future of any country lies in its children, then Ghana’s future is at risk unless deliberate efforts are made to reform, fund, and enforce a social welfare system that truly prioritizes the child.

The Ghanaian child has a long way to go. Their advocates- an even a longer way.

Reflecting on one of my favorite hymns.

“Can a woman’s tender care
Cease towards the child she bears
Yes! She may forgetful be
Yet will I remember thee.”

Ansah Opoku slams partisan politics, calls for urgent action

MP for Mpraeso, Davis Ansah Opoku MP for Mpraeso, Davis Ansah Opoku

The Member of Parliament for Mpraeso in the Eastern Region, Davis Ansah Opoku has slammed partisan politics surrounding the over 1,300 missing containers belonging to the Electricity Company of Ghana.

According to him, the focus of discussion must be shifted from partisan disputes to the pressing issue of national theft.

He stressed that while political parties continue to trade accusations, the true culprits remain untouched.

In a post on his X page as sighted by GhanaWeb Business, the Mpraeso Mp called on the president to establish an independent Commission of Inquiry to investigate the missing containers, stating that the proceedings be broadcast live for the public to witness.

“I am praying that in the reset of Ghana, the Presidency commissions a full-scale, independent Commission of Inquiry into this grand theft—and that the hearings be aired live on national television for all Ghanaians to see,” he wrote on April 2, 2025.

He further called for transparency and accountability in tackling the menace.

Background

A recent investigative report on the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has revealed that over 1,300 containers intended for clearance at the Tema Port remain unaccounted for.

According to Prof. Innocent Senyo Acquah, chairman of the investigative committee, ECG initially reported having 2,491 uncleared containers filled with cables and other essential equipment.

However, an independent audit at the port identified only 1,134 containers, leaving 1,347 unaccounted for.

Stephane Roudet is IMF Mission Chief for Ghana Stephane Roudet is IMF Mission Chief for Ghana

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has commenced its fourth review mission in Ghana under the country’s Extended Credit Facility (ECF) program for 2023–2026.

According to the Ministry of Finance, the two-week assessment, running from April 2 to April 15, will evaluate Ghana’s economic performance and progress in implementing key structural reforms.

So far, the review began with discussions at the Ministry of Finance and the Bank of Ghana, focusing on Ghana’s fiscal performance in 2024.

“Over the coming days, the IMF delegation will engage with senior government officials, Central Bank executives, and key stakeholders to assess critical economic indicators such as inflation control, monetary policy, and fiscal discipline,” a statement from the Ministry on April 2, 2025 read.

“A key aspect of the review will be Ghana’s compliance with IMF targets related to economic stabilization and debt restructuring. The outcome will determine whether the country qualifies for the next tranche of IMF financial support, vital for sustaining macroeconomic stability and boosting investor confidence,” it explained.

Minister of Finance, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson on his part underscored the government’s commitment to economic resilience, citing the passage of transformative tax amendment bills, major reforms in public procurement, and other policies outlined in the 2025 Budget.

He also expressed optimism that with improving macroeconomic indicators, Ghana’s economy could stabilize by May 2025.

The review mission will include additional meetings and technical discussions, culminating in a final IMF statement on April 15, 2025.

People don’t want us to criticise government because their party is in power

0

Renowned Kumawood actor Agya Koo has said he is shocked at the reaction by many government sympathisers against him.

This comes amid a backlash against Agya Koo on social media after he was spotted in a video calling on the government to help fix a road in the Ashanti Region.

Many netizens pointed out how Agya Koo, who is a sympathiser of the now-opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), was silent during the tenure of the previous government but is speaking out now that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) is in power.

In reaction to the backlash on his X account on April 1, 2025, the actor stated that he was “surprised” by the response from government supporters.

He argued that President John Dramani Mahama is responsible for the well-being of all citizens, irrespective of their party affiliations.

“It’s indeed surprising that some people don’t want us to criticise the government just because the president is from their party. Don’t forget that he is the leader of Ghana, not just the NDC party.

“It’s interesting to note that some Ghanaians have high expectations from the NDC because they think Akufo-Addo and Dr Bawumia didn’t perform well,” he stated.

‘Nobody is Messi!’ – Kyle Walker slams Joao Felix for overdribbling

0

It has been a torrid season for Italian side AC Milan as the seven-time Champions League winners find themselves in ninth place, having lost three of their last five games.

As the 2022 Serie A champions struggled to regain their form, tensions flared during their match against Napoli at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona in Naples.

Trailing by two goals at halftime, England right-back Kyle Walker had a candid discussion with teammate Joao Felix as the team headed to the dressing room.

In a video shared by DAZN, Walker was seen criticising Felix for holding onto the ball for too long, urging him to pass instead.

He pointed out that the team isn’t Messi, implying they lack the same dribbling prowess, and encouraged Felix to focus on passing the ball.

Felix was substituted just ten minutes after the restart as Milan attempted to salvage a point. Unfortunately, new signing Santiago Gimenez missed a penalty and failed to halve the deficit.

Milan managed to pull one back when substitute Luka Jovic bundled the ball home from close range in the 84th minute.

Despite their efforts to find an equalizer, Napoli held on for a much-needed three points, closing the gap on league leaders Inter Milan.

UK finalising Chagos deal with Mauritius, says No 10

0

Diego Garcia is the location of a UK-US military airstrip Diego Garcia is the location of a UK-US military airstrip

The UK government is working with Mauritius to finalise a deal on the future of the Chagos Islands, Downing Street has said.

Under the proposed agreement, Mauritius would gain sovereignty of the islands from the UK, but allow the US and UK to continue operating a military base on one of the islands for an initial period of 99 years, at a cost to the British taxpayer.

UK government sources have indicated they are not waiting for further sign-off from Donald Trump.

Earlier this year, Foreign Secretary David Lammy said the deal would not go ahead if the US president had objections.

In a statement, the Mauritian government reiterated Downing Street’s comments, saying that both countries were “currently working to finalise this agreement”.

The plan to hand over control of the Chagos Islands, officially known as the British Indian Ocean Territory, was announced last October following negotiations with then-Mauritian leader Pravind Jugnauth.

However, following elections, he was replaced by current PM Navin Ramgoolam, who expressed concerns about the deal.

Progress on reaching agreement was also delayed after the election of Trump because negotiators wanted to give the new US administration time to examine the details of the plan.

Reform UK leader – and Trump ally – Nigel Farage had suggested that the proposal would be met with “outright hostility” by the new US president’s team.

In October, the US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the deal posed a “serious threat” to US national security, citing Mauritius’ relationship with China.

However, last month Trump indicated he would back the deal.

Asked about it at a press conference with Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer in the Oval Office last month, he said: “We’re going to have some discussions about that very soon, and I have a feeling it’s going to work out very well.

“They’re talking about a very long-term, powerful lease, a very strong lease, about 140 years actually.

“That’s a long time, and I think we’ll be inclined to go along with your country.”

The Chagos plan is expected to enable the UK to lease Diego Garcia for 99 years. Ramgoolam has previously said the deal included a clause allowing for a further 40 year-extension.

The Conservatives have fiercely criticised the deal, with party leader Kemi Badenoch arguing it was “not in our national interest to give [them] away and pay for the privilege of doing so”.

There have been reports that deal could cost the UK government up to £18bn, a figure the Foreign Office has labelled “inaccurate and misleading”.

The government has not yet said how much the deal would cost but Sir Keir has promised to inform MPs of the details once the agreement is finalised.

He defended the deal, calling it “extremely important for our security”.

The Chagos Archipelago was separated from Mauritius in 1965, when Mauritius was still a British colony.

Britain purchased the islands for £3m, but Mauritius has argued that it was illegally forced to give away the Chagos Islands as part of a deal to get independence from Britain.

In the late 1960s Britain invited the US to build a military base on Diego Garcia and removed thousands of people from their homes on the island.

In recent years, the UK has come under growing international pressure to return the islands to Mauritius, with both the United Nations’ top court and general assembly siding with Mauritius over sovereignty claims.

In late 2022, the previous Conservative government began negotiations over control of the territory but did not reach an agreement by the time it lost power in the 2024 general election.
