Market women in Kpetoe disappointed over non-appointment of female DCE, demand gender-inclusive leadership

0

By Michael Foli Jackidy

Kpetoe (V/R), April 02, GNA – Market women in Kpetoe, within the Agortime-Ziope District of the Volta Region, have voiced their disappointment and frustration following the failure to appoint a woman as the District Chief Executive (DCE).

At a press conference held at the Kpetoe Market on Monday, March 31, the Market Queen, Madam Sewordor Janet, spoke on behalf of the women, expressing their profound discontent that Ms. Vicentia Leyo Sename, whom they had strongly endorsed, was overlooked for the position.

According to them, the decision is a missed opportunity for inclusive governance, gender equity, and women’s empowerment in the district.

They believe Ms. Sename, a vibrant, well-educated, hardworking, and unbiased woman, had demonstrated exceptional leadership and dedication to the community, particularly during the immediate past elections.

Her appointment, they argue, would have broken barriers for women in leadership and inspired young girls in the district.

The women emphasised that they have played a crucial role in the socio-economic development of the district through contributions in agriculture, trade, education, and community service.

Despite these efforts, they continue to face systemic barriers to leadership and decision-making positions.

They stated that their aspirations for greater female representation in governance have once again been disregarded.

“Women in leadership positions often champion issues affecting the marginalized, especially women and children,” Madam Sewordor said.

She stressed that a female DCE would have been in a better position to address challenges such as inadequate healthcare, poor road infrastructure, lack of access to quality education, and economic empowerment for women.

The women of Kpetoe feel that their voices have been ignored and sidelined in the governance of the district. They argue that the decision to overlook Ms. Sename deepens their sense of exclusion and marginalization.

They are therefore calling on the government and key stakeholders to take deliberate steps to address gender imbalances in political appointments at the district level.

“Sustainable development can only be achieved when women are given equal opportunities to participate in decision-making processes,” they stated.

According to them, the current political landscape favors male dominance and prioritizes party loyalists over competent individuals, a system they believe must be revisited to ensure fair and inclusive leadership.

As a collective force, the market women of Kpetoe remain resolute in their call for fair representation in leadership. They are urging: The government to prioritize gender-inclusive appointments at the district level.

Traditional authorities, opinion leaders, and civil society organizations to actively support female representation in governance.

Policymakers to recognize the value of women’s leadership in achieving inclusive development.

They insist that the time has come for a change in leadership structures, and they will not remain silent on the issue.

“The call for gender equality in leadership is not just about fairness; it is about progress, development, and building a better future for the next generation of women and girls in our district,” Madam Sewordor concluded.

The women reaffirmed their determination to advocate for equal representation and ensure that women’s voices are heard in governance at all levels.

Minority must present proof of suspicious Aircraft cargo – Ade Coker

0

Former Greater Accra Regional Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Joseph Ade Coker, has called on the Minority in Parliament to provide the government with any relevant information they have regarding the alleged arrival of cocaine and cash in Ghana via a suspicious aircraft.

His remarks follow claims by the Minority that cargo planes carrying suspected contraband landed at Kotoka International Airport under suspicious circumstances. The Minority has urged the National Security Ministry to urgently disclose the content of the aircraft and provide clarity on the matter.

The Minority raised concerns about two aircraft—AirMed Flight N823AM and Cavok Air Antonov An-12B—which reportedly landed in Ghana in March 2025. According to their statement, the AirMed flight, usually an air ambulance, arrived in the country on March 20, 2025, but did not transport any patients during its five-day stay.

Similarly, the Cavok Air Antonov jet landed on March 12, 2025, remaining in the country for 13 days before departing to Gran Canaria, a region associated with drug trafficking and money laundering.

Speaking on the Breakfast Daily on Channel One TV, Ade Coker urged the Minority to assist security agencies by sharing any credible intelligence they possess.

“I think the call from the minority is in the right direction. If they have the information, they should bring it. Maybe a plane comes to land at the Kotoka Airport, until an arrest is made before the president can be briefed that we have been able to arrest a plane with cocaine in it.

“Otherwise, do you expect the president to be briefed on every plane that lands in Ghana? No, that is not how it is done,” he stated.

Ade Coker emphasised that security agencies rely on tip-offs to conduct their investigations effectively.

“Now, the minority has put up information regarding the two flights. You and I were not there. Maybe, the government itself is not aware of it. So, until an arrest is made or there is a tip-off, security can act.”

Ghanaians have been bleeding, deliver all 6 points - MP tells Black Stars

Esperance fans appeared to instigate the altercations, breaching barriers and engaging in physical confrontations with Sundowns supporters.

Security personnel and police struggled to contain the unrest, which resulted in injuries and damage to stadium infrastructure.

Some Esperance supporters fled onto the pitch before being escorted out by authorities, while others received medical treatment near the changerooms for minor injuries.

Witnesses reported that fans hurled plastic bottles and scuffled in the stands for several minutes.

Medical officials confirmed treating minor injuries, including cuts and bruises.

The match itself was a tense affair with limited clear chances, but Sundowns’ Portuguese coach, Miguel Cardoso, had to intervene late in the game, rushing onto the pitch to separate his players following a contentious foul.

Coach’s reaction

Reflecting on the match, Cardoso acknowledged the challenges ahead, stating,

Hard work lies ahead of us. We lost our way after taking the lead, but I was pleased with our goal and the team’s movement. I assure our supporters that we are not travelling to Tunisia to defend—we aim to score and win the second leg.

The return fixture is set for April 8 in Rades, with Sundowns holding a slight edge but facing a hostile environment amid heightened tensions following Tuesday’s incidents.

Target politicians who become wealthy overnight – IEA boss to BoG on unexplained wealth

The Director of Research at the Institute of Economic Affairs, Dr John Kwakye, called on the Bank of Ghana in April last year to investigate politicians with unexplained wealth.

He said this measure was necessary to promote fairness in the fight against money laundering.

Dr. John Kwakye, Director of Research at the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA), has called for a comprehensive approach to tackling sudden unexplained wealth, advocating for scrutiny of politicians who amass significant wealth overnight.

According to him, it is important to target high-profile individuals, together with smaller offenders to ensure fairness in anti-money laundering efforts.

“How about the politicians who become wealthy overnight? You have to target them as well and not only the small flies,” he remarked in a tweet in response to the Bank of Ghana’s recent warning that sudden unexplained wealth might indicate money laundering.

Ghana’s central bank has provided insights into how sudden unexplained wealth, which could be a result of money laundering, can land an individual in jail after prosecution.

It explained that persons with sudden unexplained wealth must be ready to provide satisfactory explanations of the source of their wealth to relevant authorities.

In its latest Financial Literacy document, the Bank of Ghana urged the public to remain circumspect when receiving funds from third parties through their bank accounts.

“Sudden unexplained wealth could be as a result of money laundering and you could be prosecuted. Be sure to be in a position to satisfactorily explain your source of wealth.

“Don’t allow a third party to receive and or transfer funds through your bank account. You could be aiding money laundering or terrorist financing which is a crime punishable by law,” the bank said.

The document further detailed what money laundering is, by stating that the act is “the process whereby money obtained from unlawful activities such as drug trafficking and corruption is legitimized through complex transactions and processes called ‘cleaning’ to hide its illegal source.”

Paulina Oduro Clarifies Kofi Kinaata TGMA Comment

0

Paulina Oduro

Veteran highlife musician, Paulina Oduro, has clarified reports misquoting her statement about Kofi Kinaata and the Telecel Ghana Awards (TGMA).

Speaking on Empire 102.7 FM, she dismissed claims that she said Kinaata was “bigger” than the awards scheme, urging the media to report accurately.

“Oh, Chaley! I think these bloggers should get their facts right,” she allegedly said. “What I actually said was that it’s not a big deal. Kofi is loved all over Ghana; he’s a big artiste and should not be worried about whether he’s nominated or not. TGMA has been around for a long time; Kofi can never be bigger than that show. But as an artist, he is big!”

The controversy stemmed from Kofi Kinaata’s absence from the Artiste of the Year category at the 26th TGMA, despite multiple nominations driven by the success of his Kofi oo Kofi EP. The omission sparked disappointment among fans, with some blogs misinterpreting Paulina Oduro’s remarks in her effort to encourage the artist.

With her clarification, she hopes to put the issue to rest, reaffirming that Kinaata is a major force in Ghanaian music, but the TGMA remains an essential platform for recognizing industry talents.

Ken Agyapong Blames Religion On NPP Defeat

0

Ken Agyapong

New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful, Kennedy Agyapong, has launched a stunning religious attack against former Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

At a meeting with a group of lawyers in Kumasi, to solicit their support for his second bid to become the next NPP flagbearer, Kennedy Agyapong said the NPP should not retain Dr. Bawumia because the party lost the 2024 election because of his Islamic religious status.

According to Kennedy Agyapong, Bawumia’s religious status greatly affected the NPP because a number of Christian leaders who he said did not want a Muslim to become President, campaigned against Dr. Bawumia.

He said, these Christian leaders urged their members not to vote for a Muslim.

The former Member of Parliament (MP) suggested to his audience that as long as Dr. Bawumia is a Muslim and he’s elected again by the NPP, the problem will persist.

At the end of the meeting, a number of those invited dismissed Kennedy Agyapong’s claims, completely dismissing it as “baseless and divisive.”

Some also said available data across the country does not support the religious slant and attacks by Kennedy Agyapong.

Mahama can’t fight galamsey due to political ties – Ahiagbah alleges

0

The Director of Communications for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Richard Ahiagbah, has alleged that President John Dramani Mahama is unable to take firm action against illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, due to his political ties with those involved in the practice.

Speaking on the Breakfast Daily on Channel One TV on Wednesday, April 2, Ahiagbah claimed that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) actively sought support from galamsey operators during the 2020 election, making it difficult for them to clamp down on the activity.

“President Mahama is very soft on galamsey, and it has worsened under him because he is compromised by many of the things he said on the campaign platform. They actively campaigned for galamsey votes in 2020.

“So, where he is now, he cannot do anything, at least in the short term, to aggressively attack these galamsey people,” he stated.

Ahiagbah further suggested that while strong public statements are being made about fighting galamsey, the necessary actions to address the crisis are not being effectively implemented on the ground.

“In my assessment, strong statements are one thing, but the mechanisms on the ground to deal with these matters are not there. Galamsey is worse today, and we are threatening our existence with this galamsey issue.

“Granted, galamsey didn’t start today, and we need to fight it. At that level, I say let’s deal with the issue outside of politics because they interlace.

“The idea that galamsey is getting worse is because the NDC had a tacit benefit from the galamseyers, and they cannot do anything immediately to deal with them,” he concluded.

By Laudia Sawer

Tema, April 02, GNA – The Tema branch of the Power Queens Club of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has received fire prevention training as part of the Club’s vision of empowering and educating its members on various issues.

The workshop, held at the ECG Tema Regional Office, had members of the all-female club of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) take the ECG ladies through safety issues at home.

The ladies were cautioned against overloading sockets, not leaving open fires unattended, and keeping heating equipment in aerated areas; they also received training in the handling of fire extinguishers.

The interactive workshop also gave the ladies a general overview of the operations of the GNFS, as well as what should be done in fire outbreaks.

They were also advised to educate their colleagues and household on general safety issues to prevent accidents and fire outbreaks.

Madam Anabel Zormelo, an engineer and the President of the Tema ECG Power Queens, stated that the training was organised to help educate and spread information on safety and fire prevention.

Madam Zormelo added that it was critical for them to be educated to be more intentional about common mistakes at home that could easily cause fires and other accidents.

The Power Queens Club is made up of all female workers of the ECG with the aim of helping and equipping female workers of the organisation.

I encountered ‘sex for roles’ at the start of my career – Ahoufe Patri

Priscilla Opoku Agyeman, popularly known as Ahoufe Patri Priscilla Opoku Agyeman, popularly known as Ahoufe Patri

Ghanaian actress Priscilla Opoku Agyeman, popularly known as Ahoufe Patri, has revealed that she encountered sex-for-roles proposals early in her acting career.

The actress, who gained fame through the popular ‘Boys Kasa’ skits with Kalybos, shared her experience in an interview on Max TV.

She added that the issue of sex-for-roles is not limited to the movie industry but exists in many other professions as well.

“The issue of sex for roles is prevalent everywhere, not just in the movie industry. I remember when I was about 19 years old, I met a producer who was interested in what I had to offer, but he insisted on getting to know me in a more personal way,” she revealed.

At the time, Ahoufe Patri said she was new to the industry and still finding her path.

She explained that while she was eager to land roles, she was unwilling to compromise her values.

“At that time, I had a boyfriend whom I was deeply in love with, and I couldn’t imagine doing something like that with another man. The producer became angry,” she recalled.

She further mentioned that years later, the same producer unknowingly crossed paths with her again. By then, she had already become a well-known actress.

“Years later, when I became known as Ahoufe Patri, the same producer didn’t recognise me and told me he was a big fan,” she recounted.

Watch horrible scenes as Sundowns fans clash with Esperance fans during CAFCC game

Mamelodi Sundowns’ CAF Champions League quarter-final match against Esperance was marred by scenes of hooliganism after rival supporters clashed in a brawl on Tuesday, April 1, 2025.

The ugly scuffle erupted at the end of the game as fans from both sides breached security measures and engaged in physical altercations in the stands.

In a video sighted by GhanaWeb, the violence unfolded in the blue stand of Loftus Versfeld Stadium, where fans were seen throwing objects at each other while others engaged in fistfights. Despite the chaotic scenes, no deaths were recorded.

However, three Esperance fans sustained serious injuries and were rushed to the hospital for medical attention.

In an official statement, Esperance SC confirmed that the injured fans are in stable condition and reassured supporters that all travelling fans had safely returned to Johannesburg.

“The Tunisian Sports Al-Taraji assures all Al-Taraji fans, especially the families of those who travelled to South Africa, that our supporters are fine and have returned to Johannesburg safe and sound.

The club’s management ensured the necessary transport was secured to leave the stadium and take them to the train station,” the club stated.

“The Tunisian Sports Al-Taraji informs all its fans that the three individuals taken to the hospital are in stable condition and are receiving treatment.”

Additionally, the Tunisian club announced that it will submit an official complaint to CAF, providing evidence of the altercation.

Mamelodi Sundowns secured a 1-0 victory over Esperance, with Peter Shalulile scoring the decisive goal for the home side in the first-leg encounter. EE/BB

BBC finds fear, loss and hope in Sudan’s ruined capital after army victory

0

The battered heart of Khartoum lies eerily quiet now, after weeks of intense urban combat in the Sudanese capital.

We entered the city just days after Sudan’s army recaptured it from the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), the culmination of a six-month offensive through the central part of the country.

Once the commercial heart and seat of Sudan’s government, Khartoum is now a burnt-out shell.

Taking back the capital was a turning point in the two-year civil war, which erupted out of a power struggle between the army and the RSF, and is estimated to have claimed at least 150,000 lives.

But – as celebrations for Eid spill out into the capital’s streets and people here consider the war to be over – it is not clear what direction the conflict will take now.

We drove first to the presidential palace, which the RSF occupied early in the war.

It was an important base for the paramilitary fighters.

The floors are covered with debris and broken glass.

Cushioned chairs once used for official functions stand covered with dust, a few paintings still hang on the walls, ragged chandeliers dangle from the ceilings.

But almost everything else had been looted – even the electrical cables were yanked out of the walls.

The worst damage is at the front of the building, which was struck by RSF drones shortly after the army seized the palace.

The main entrance is wrecked, dried blood still visible on the stairs, the windows now gaping holes looking out over the River Nile.

“I was really very excited to be in the Republican palace,” one soldier told me as we walked down the grimy red carpet.

“It’s my first time in this place and I waited for this place [like] the Sudanese in general. They wanted it to be free. It is symbol of our dignity.”

It is also an important symbol of power for the army.

Soldiers sang and danced, their jubilation erupting as the Muslim Eid holiday began.

A local restaurant delivered a feast for them, hailed as heroes by many in the capital.

But their victory was won at enormous cost.

The level of destruction in central Khartoum is stunning: government ministries, banks and towering office blocks stand blackened and burned.

The tarmac at the international airport is a graveyard of smashed planes, its passport and check-in counters covered in ashes.

We drove slowly, weaving around unexploded ordnance in the road.

At one intersection body parts were in a heap, two skulls clearly visible. About 100m (328ft) down the road, a body lay in front of a damaged car.

A stop at St Matthew’s Cathedral, built by the British in 1908 and a place of worship for the country’s minority Christian population, was a welcome reprieve.

The beautifully painted ceiling is intact.

A hole high in one wall showed where a shell had crashed through, a cross had fallen down.

But it looked much better than many of the buildings we had seen.

A soldier cleaning up rubble on the floor told us that most of the damage was caused by shrapnel from shelling around the church.

No-one destroyed the “house of God”, he said, but the RSF fighters desecrated the building by defecating in it.

He said his son was born on the first day of the war, but because of the non-stop fighting he had still not had a chance to go home and see the child.

The paramilitaries also occupied the areas where diplomatic missions are located.

When the fighting began, countries and companies scrambled to evacuate staff.

At the entrance of the British embassy, an RSF slogan is scrawled on the wall.

The bullet-proof glass of the building largely held, but it is pockmarked with many signs of impact.

In the car park at the back, a fleet of vehicles stands destroyed.

Across the street, a UK flag hung over the staircase of a battered building, crumpled and dirty.

This is Sudan’s third civil war in 70 years, and in some ways, it is worse than any of the others – as previous conflicts were fought in other parts of the country.

But this one has torn through the core of Sudan, hardening divisions and threatening to split the nation.

Further away from the combat zone, scattered celebrations for Eid spilled into the street.

For people here the war is over, even though it continues elsewhere.

The army has been accused of atrocities, and reports say tens of thousands fled the fighting in recent days. But in Khartoum, people celebrated the end of the brutal RSF occupation.

The mood was also buoyant at a communal kitchen in the neighbourhood of al-Jeraif West.

“I feel like I’ve been re-created,” said Osman al-Bashir, his eyes lighting up with the new reality after citing a list of the war’s hardships. He told me he had learned his English from the BBC World Service.

Duaa Tariq is a pro-democracy activist, part of the movement that in 2019 toppled military leader Omar al-Bashir, whose authoritarian rule had lasted nearly three decades.

She has been focusing on helping her neighbourhood survive the war.

“We’re celebrating Eid for the first time in two years,” she said.

“Everybody’s dressing up, including myself! I’m overwhelmed with a lot of emotions, just like trying to learn how to live again. We feel free, we feel light, even the air smells different.”

Ms Tariq struggled to keep the kitchens running during the war as food ran out, the city looted by the RSF, under siege by the army and US aid cut.

Food is still scarce, but there is hope now.

“I’m feeling wonderful. I feel safe. I feel great, even though I’m hungry,” said an elderly man, Kasim Agra.

“You know, it doesn’t matter. Freedom is what’s important.

“As you see, I carry a mobile,” he said, pointing to a phone in his pocket.

“You couldn’t carry a mobile about two weeks ago.”

That is something many people in different parts of Khartoum have said to me – mobile telephones were a lifeline to the outside world, and a prime target for theft by RSF fighters.

Mr Agra was optimistic that Khartoum, and the country, could recover.

“I think the government is going to bring investors: Americans, Saudis, Canadians, Chinese, they’re going to rebuild this country, I believe.”

Even if such massive reconstruction takes place, it is hard to imagine Khartoum retaining its distinct cultural and architectural features.

Several of the women also echoed something I have repeatedly heard elsewhere – they can finally sleep again, after lying awake nights afraid that RSF looters would break in.

The weight of fear and loss is heavy: so many stories of abuse, of life endangered and disrupted.

“Our children are traumatised,” says Najwa Ibrahim.

“They need psychiatrists to help them. My sister’s a teacher and tried to work with the children, but it’s not enough.”

Ms Tariq also has questions about the impact of the war: “When will the city be accessible again, open again?

“And another personal question as an activist, what will happen to all the freedoms and rights that we gained over the past five years of revolution?” she asked, referring to the years that followed the ousting of Bashir when a joint civilian-military government had been working towards a return to civilian rule.

“How will it be again for civil society, actors, for activists, for freedom fighters? I’m not sure of our future now.”

No-one is sure of Sudan’s future.

“We pray for the people of Darfur,” 16-year-old Hawaa Abdulshafiea said, referring to the western stronghold of the RSF, where the humanitarian crisis has been worst, and where the focus of the war is expected to shift.

“May God protect them.”

Armed Robbery on Manso Road in Ashanti Region – Traumatized Woman Shares Her Experience

0

A frightening armed robbery has left passengers shaken after five armed robbers attacked travelers on the dangerous Manso road in the Ashanti Region. The robbers, heavily armed and ruthless, targeted unsuspecting travelers, mostly traders, stealing money, phones, and other valuables. The incident has reignited concerns about security on Ghana’s highways.

A victim of the attack shared her harrowing experience in a video posted on X by Eddie Wrt. She explained that a vehicle that had already been robbed attempted to warn them of the danger ahead, but their driver failed to recognize the signal. Moments later, their vehicle was ambushed and forced to stop. The robbers directed the passengers to a bushy area, where the victim saw three other vehicles that had already been robbed.

In fear for her safety, the victim managed to hide her phone in the seat cover with the help of a male passenger. The robbers then began to steal from the passengers, leaving them vulnerable. In a particularly disturbing detail, she revealed that female passengers who had no money were stripped of their clothes by the robbers.

Fortunately, there were no reported casualties, but the attack has revived concerns about the poor state of the Manso road, which has long been a hotspot for criminal activity due to its deteriorated condition. Many believe that the bad roads make it easier for criminals to target vehicles, as they are forced to slow down or stop.

The incident has sparked outrage across Ghana, with many urging authorities to improve security in the area and repair the roads to prevent future attacks. As investigations continue, passengers and traders who use the route regularly are left questioning their safety and wondering when the government will take action to protect them from such terrifying experiences.

We’re Implementing Measures To Manage Liquidity – BoG Governor

0

Dr. Johnson Asiama

The Bank of Ghana (BoG) has announced additional measures to manage the amount of money circulating in the country.

The Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr. Johnson Asiama, who disclosed this during a press conference at the 123rd Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) said the decision to increase the policy rate from 27% to 28% was aimed at maintaining macroeconomic stability and enhance monetary policy transmission.

“In addition to the adjustment in the policy rate, the Central Bank is implementing complementary measures to strengthen liquidity management and enhance monetary policy transmission,” he added.

“The Bank will introduce a 273-day instrument to augment the existing sterilization toolkit. Intensify the monitoring of banks’ Net Open Positions (NOPs) to ensure compliance.  Review the current structure of the Cash Reserve Ratio (CRR) to assess its broader impact on liquidity conditions and financial intermediation in the economy,” he stated.

According to the governor, the measures were necessary to prevent excessive liquidity that will undermine efforts to reduce inflation as well as stabilise and protect the economy from unexpected shocks.

He further stated that the persistent inflation dynamics over the past year, partly driven by both fiscal and monetary policy missteps, will require a policy reset to re-anchor the disinflation process.

“To restore price stability going forward will require a tight monetary policy stance, strong liquidity management, and commitment to the 2025 budget which seeks to reset the fiscal consolidation process,” he added.

A fire broke out at the Tamale Taxi Rank in the early hours of Wednesday, 2nd April, 2025, causing panic among residents and traders. The blaze, which started unexpectedly, spread quickly and engulfed several containers at the site before firefighters arrived.

According to reports, the Ghana National Fire Service received an emergency call about the fire at around 5:35 am. A team of firefighters was dispatched immediately and arrived at the scene within ten minutes. Upon arrival, they found parts of the taxi rank in flames, with thick smoke filling the air. They worked swiftly to put out the fire and managed to bring it under control by 6:05 am.

Eyewitnesses said they saw flames suddenly emerging from one of the containers, and within minutes, the fire had spread to nearby structures. Some traders and taxi drivers at the rank tried to douse the fire with buckets of water before the firefighters arrived. Others quickly moved their belongings to safety to avoid losses.

At the moment, authorities are still investigating the exact cause of the fire. It is not yet clear whether it was due to an electrical fault, a gas explosion, or any other factor. Fire officials have urged traders and business owners in the area to be cautious and ensure that all electrical connections and flammable materials are properly handled to prevent future incidents.

Fortunately, no casualties have been reported. However, the fire has destroyed valuable goods, and some traders have suffered heavy losses. Affected individuals are appealing for support from the government and other organizations to help them recover from the disaster.

Muslims last weekend accomplished one of the canons of their faith – the month-long period of fasting.

It is a period of spiritual renewal after which those who took part in it, according to the dictates of God or Allah, are expected to continue to be spiritually disciplined as they were during the period under review.

A tall order this might seem given the temptations in our everyday lives as humans in a digitalised world in which bad deeds are largely not considered iniquitous.

The challenges of total adherence to the  dictates of God, notwithstanding those who submit themselves to these are expected to be righteous as much as they can even after the Ramadan fasting.

The world today is full of injustices and we wonder whether mankind has forgotten about the ephemeralness of this world and so easily carried away by its glitters.

Social media is today a location where all manner of vanity and iniquities are exhibited by both members of the Abrahamic faiths of Islam and Christianity.

Political activities have been reduced to name-calling and exchange of vitriolic underpinned by mendacious remarks.

In all the foregone, the objective is to pull our colleagues down in the most viciousness of manners. Today, defamation has become commonplace and the youth are able to hide behind the partition of social media to spread filth against men and women older than their parents.

Bizarrely, these are taking place at a time when the word of God is being spread with speed never before witnessed in the history of humanity, thanks to modern technology.

For how long shall we allow the nasty phenomenon of name-calling and lies continue to feature in our lives?

Gone are the days when news were consumed without any fear of consuming lies.

Consuming information with a pinch of salt is now the order of the days we live in.

It is our prayer that both members of the Islamic and Christian faith, including those who adhere to African traditional faiths, will resolve to work towards making our country morally clean.

Some might consider this as Utopian too ideal to be possible. We think however that, giving up without a fight as it were would be defeatist, which we should not allow.

Political leaders who provide the fodder for poisoning our body-politics belong to either the Islamic or Christian faith. We therefore implore them to let the fear of God be the cornerstone of their activities.

If such persons allow the dictum ‘God First’ to be their watchwords, we would have gone a long way in surmounting the morally bankrupt deeds of mischief, vengeance and thievery of the public kitty.

The coming weeks will see the country being treated to the political drama of the President continuing his project of removing from office a sitting Chief Justice.

The subject is one which will not inure to the interest of the country.

Anything which threatens the rule of law is something which should be despised by all cherishers of democracy and all its attributes.

Good governance is about being Godly in our management of the kitty and other departments of state so that the people will not have cause to complain about instances of bad governance. The fear of God is the beginning of wisdom.

Govt Applauds Ghana Bauxite Company’s Refinery Plan

Tractors working on the refinery site

The government has commended the management of Ghana Bauxite Company at Awaso for its decision to build a refinery, a move that will add value to the country’s natural resources and contribute to economic growth.

Western North Regional Minister, Wilbert Petty Brentum, noted that the refinery project will not only enhance the company’s operational efficiency but also create employment opportunities for residents of Awaso and surrounding communities.

“The government’s support for this initiative aligns with its broader vision of developing an integrated aluminum industry in Ghana,” Mr. Brentum stated. He emphasised that leveraging local bauxite deposits will reduce the country’s dependence on imported alumina and strengthen domestic industries.

Speaking at the official opening of a Community Relations Office in Awaso, located in the Bibiani-Anhwiaso-Bekwai Municipality, Mr. Brentum reiterated the government’s dedication to adding value to the country’s natural resources.

He commended Ghana Bauxite Company’s management for their substantial investments in improving operational performance.

“Since Ofori-Poku Company Limited took over from foreign operators three years ago, the company has demonstrated remarkable growth and efficiency,” he noted.

Mr. Brentum also underscored the importance of supporting indigenous businesses, expressing confidence in the ability of local enterprises to thrive when given the opportunity. He stressed that promoting local ownership will create jobs, stimulate economic growth, and reduce reliance on foreign investment.

“Ghana Bauxite Company’s success under local ownership is proof that indigenous businesses have the potential to drive economic growth,” he added.

Ghana Bauxite Company’s General Manager, Alexander Gyedu, provided a brief history of the company, noting that it has been operating in Awaso since the 1940s. For over eight decades, the mine has remained a major source of premium trihydrate bauxite, with an alumina (Al₂O₃) content of 51%, low silica levels of 2%, and 9% moisture.

He stated that the company is Ghana’s first and only operational bauxite mine, currently owned by Ofori-Poku Company Limited (OPCL), which holds an 80% stake, while the Government of Ghana, through the Ghana Integrated Aluminum Development Corporation (GIADEC), holds the remaining 20%.

Mr. Gyedu emphasised the company’s commitment to its workforce, describing employees as the lifeline of the business. Since OPCL became the major shareholder in 2022, the company has increased its workforce from 483 employees to 1,158 as of February 2025, with plans to continue hiring to boost production.

Under OPCL’s leadership, the company has significantly expanded its fleet, adding 160 nine-axle trucks since 2022. It has also acquired: 42 new earth-moving machines, 52 dump trucks, 16 utility vehicles, 35 light-duty vehicles, a surface miner, and two rollers and a tractor slasher, among other equipment.

These investments have led to a substantial increase in haulage operations, from approximately 600,000 tons of bauxite in 2022 to 1.7 million tons in 2024.

Mr. Gyedu stated that the company is implementing various initiatives to further enhance production. These include an extensive exploration programme to assess bauxite reserves within its concession, the acquisition of additional equipment, and the development of a new mining area.

The Paramount Chief of Sefwi Bekwai Traditional Area, Oyeadeeyie Basape Kojo Armah III, lauded Ghana Bauxite Company for its commitment to corporate social responsibility. He noted that the establishment of a Community Relations Office will help address concerns from stakeholders and strengthen engagement with the local community.

He also emphasised that the transition to Ghanaian ownership has led to significant improvements in workers’ welfare and overall community benefits.

“The opening of this office is a testament to Ghana Bauxite Company’s dedication to social and community development,” he said.

Ghana Bauxite Company continues to play a key role in Ghana’s mining sector, driving economic growth, fostering local employment, and reinforcing the government’s vision for a robust aluminum industry.

Nollywood Is Losing Its Originality – Segun Arinze

0

Segun Arinze

Veteran Nollywood actor Segun Arinze has expressed concerns that Nollywood is losing its African authenticity due to the increasing influence of foreign culture.

Speaking in an interview with Joy News on March 27, 2025, he said that while the industry is growing, the stories being told are becoming “slightly distorted,” making Nollywood lose its originality. He attributed this shift to social media and global exposure, which have led many filmmakers to adopt Western storytelling styles rather than preserving African traditions.

“We are losing originality. We are beginning to imitate Western culture instead of keeping our authentic African stories. Just because we travel and interact globally doesn’t mean we should abandon our customs and traditions,” he said.

He gave an example of how traditional African marriage ceremonies are being replaced by white weddings, emphasizing that this cultural shift is also happening in Nollywood.

Segun Arinze urged filmmakers to stay true to African storytelling and not let foreign influences erase the industry’s rich heritage.

What sports ministry, stakeholders have said so far after Nigerian boxer’s death in Ghana

0

A Nigerian boxer, Gabriel Oluwasegun Olanrewaju, tragically passed away after collapsing during a fight in Ghana.

He was later pronounced dead at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital.

Olanrewaju collapsed during his bout against Ghana’s John Mbanugu on Saturday, March 29, 2025, at the Bukom Boxing Arena.

He had a strong start in what was a close contest before the tragic incident occurred in the third round. Olanrewaju had switched to a defensive stance while Mbanugu sought an opening.

The latter managed to break through Olanrewaju’s guard with a punch.

Although the strike was not a clean shot, Olanrewaju became dizzy, his eyes rolling back immediately before he collapsed onto the canvas.

Medics rushed into the ring as the referee struggled to remove the gum shield in the boxer’s mouth.

The boxer was later transported to the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The incident has sparked a public outcry, with many demanding detailed information regarding the circumstances of his death.

The demands have triggered responses from major stakeholders involved in the Ghana Boxing League, except for the main organizers, IMAX Boxing Promotions. and the Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA).

Here are reactions from some key stakeholders

Trust Sports Emporium (TSE)

The Trust Sports Emporium (TSE), managers of the multipurpose Bukom Arena, where the bout took place, confirmed the boxer’s passing in a press release and announced the postponement of the boxing league.

“It is with deep regret that the Trust Sports Emporium confirms the death of Nigerian boxer Gabriel Oluwasegun Olanrewaju, who collapsed in the ring during an IMAX Boxing League match at Bukom Boxing Arena and was later pronounced dead at Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital.

“In view of the incident, the Emporium has postponed the proposed start of the Amateur Boxing League until all major issues arising from the boxer’s death have been duly addressed,” their statement said.

TSE also clarified that contrary to some reports, they were not the event organizers, emphasizing that IMAX Boxing Promotions was responsible for the competition.

“In the interim, it is important to highlight the following: The boxing event was not a Trust Sports Emporium event. The promoters were IMAX Boxing Promotions,” they added.

The organisation further stated that ensuring a safe environment is a priority, noting that medics and ambulances were present at the event.

“As part of our commitment to safety, we ensure that each event has medics and an ambulance on standby. These were present.

“Trust Sports Emporium remains dedicated to ensuring that all events held at its facilities take place under safe conditions,” it added.

Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA)

While the Ghana Boxing Authority has yet to release an official statement, its Communications Director, Mohammed Amin Lamptey, has suggested that the league should continue despite the tragedy.

“It’s normal. So, if today a colleague of ours has gone to cover an event and coincidentally or accidentally the person got injured and died in the process, must we also say that we aren’t going to practice journalism again? I don’t think so,” he told Citi FM.

Minister of Sports, Kofi Adams

Ghana’s Minister of Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has extended his condolences to the family of the late Nigerian boxer.

He expressed deep sorrow over the incident and reassured the Nigerian Boxing Board of Control (NBBC) that Ghanaian authorities would cooperate with investigations.

“It is with profound sadness and a heavy heart that I, on behalf of the Ministry of Sports and Recreation and the Government of Ghana, extend my deepest condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of Nigerian boxer Gabriel Oluwasegun, who tragically passed away following his contest at the Bukom Boxing Arena.

“Gabriel, a promising athlete who displayed exceptional talent, passion, and courage in the ring, passed away under unfortunate circumstances. His untimely departure not only deprives boxing of an admirable competitor but also reminds us of the unpredictable nature of the sport we passionately love,” he said.

The minister also assured the public that his office would support investigations and implement measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.

“While we await the official medical report regarding the cause of Gabriel’s passing, the ministry, together with the Ghana Boxing Authority, pledges full cooperation to ensure a thorough investigation and to support all efforts aimed at improving the safety of our athletes,” he added.

Nigerian Boxing Board of Control (NBBC)

Dr Rafiu Oladipo, President of the Nigeria Boxing Board of Control, has called on the Ghana Boxing Authority to provide a full explanation of the circumstances leading to Olanrewaju’s death.

Olanrewaju, a former West African light-heavyweight champion, was 40 years old.

Speaking to Sporty FM, Dr Oladipo acknowledged the sorrow within Nigeria’s boxing fraternity and demanded answers from Ghanaian authorities.

“The Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) needs to explain to us the circumstances that led to our boxer’s death. The Nigerian boxing fraternity is in a state of mourning. He has a wife and three children—who will take care of them? We need answers from the Ghana Boxing Authority.”

The exact cause of death remains unknown, but Dr Oladipo confirmed that an autopsy has been scheduled for Wednesday, April 2, 2025, due to public holidays in Ghana.

“We spoke to the GBA, but they told us Oluwasegun Olanrewaju’s body is at the mortuary. However, as it’s a holiday in Ghana, the autopsy will be done on Wednesday,” he stated.

Ghanaian Pastor in U.S. Allegedly Kills Wife Few Days After Wedding

0

A tragic and shocking incident has unfolded in the United States, where a Ghanaian pastor identified as Isaac has been arrested for allegedly killing his wife, Sandra, just days after their wedding. The case has sparked intense debate online, with many questioning the circumstances that led to the fatal confrontation.

According to reports, Pastor Isaac, a devoted Christian who strongly believes in abstaining from sex before marriage, only discovered after the wedding that his wife was transgender. Sandra had reportedly not disclosed her gender identity before their union, leading to feelings of betrayal and rage when Isaac eventually found out. Overcome with emotions, he allegedly took matters into his own hands, resulting in her tragic death.

Authorities have since taken Pastor Isaac into custody, and an investigation is ongoing. Other reports reveal that some close friends of Sandra were the ones that disclosed the truth to the husband. The case has ignited discussions about trust, disclosure, and personal beliefs in relationships. Many argue that honesty is crucial in marriage, while others condemn the violent reaction, emphasizing that no form of deception justifies taking a life.

Social media reactions have been mixed. Some sympathize with the pastor, saying he was misled, while others believe his actions were inexcusable, regardless of the circumstances. One user wrote, “Marriage is built on trust. If one partner hides something this significant, there are bound to be serious consequences. But killing someone is never the answer.” Others have called for a deeper conversation on transgender rights, relationship transparency, and legal protections for LGBTQ+ individuals.

As the case unfolds, legal experts suggest Pastor Isaac could face serious charges, including first-degree murder. Whether fueled by anger, betrayal, or religious beliefs, this tragic event serves as a stark reminder of the complexities surrounding identity, relationships, and acceptance in today’s world.

NDC’s Ayine and Edudzi Allegedly Justified ECG’s Procurements Without PPA Approval

Exposed: NDC’s Ayine and Edudzi Allegedly Justified ECG’s Procurements Without PPA Approval

News Hub Creator3h

A recent post by NPP member PK Sarpong has sparked controversy regarding the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and its legal representatives under President Akufo-Addo’s government. According to Sarpong, two prominent lawyers, Dr. Dominic Ayine and Edudzi Tamakloe, played key roles in ECG’s management between 2017 and 2024.

Sarpong alleges that these lawyers were hired by ECG to justify numerous procurement deals that were done without approval from the Public Procurement Authority (PPA). He claims they were paid thousands of dollars for their services, raising concerns about accountability.

In recent times, ECG has been in the news for various scandals, including containers stuck at the Tema Port for long periods due to contractual disputes. Sarpong insists that Ayine and Tamakloe should take a significant part of the blame for these issues, as they were involved in legal decisions during that time.

He further argues that all aspects of the ECG situation should be thoroughly investigated, including the roles played by those who advised and represented the company legally. According to him, transparency is necessary to understand how ECG ended up in its current state.

With ECG struggling financially and facing public backlash, these allegations add another layer to the ongoing debate about corruption and mismanagement within state institutions. While the accused lawyers have not yet responded, this issue is expected to generate more discussions in the coming days.

What do you think about NDC’s Dominic Ayine and Edudzi Tamakloe allegedly being the lawyers who justified the procurement by ECG without approval? Share your thoughts in the comments section below

PBC workers demand urgent govt intervention to revive struggling firm

0

Workers of the Produce Buying Company (PBC) are ramping up demands for government intervention as the once-thriving cocoa-buying firm struggles with inefficiencies and financial distress.

They argue that PBC, a crucial player in Ghana’s cocoa sector, deserves the same level of attention and support as Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) amid ongoing economic recovery efforts.

At the core of their demands is the urgent appointment of a new CEO to lead the company out of crisis.

Led by the Pressure Group of PBC Limited, the aggrieved workers cite months of unpaid salaries as a major setback, threatening their livelihoods and the company’s operations.

Speaking to Citi Business News, Vice Chairman of the PBC Workers’ Union, Seth Adusei, called on the government to take swift action to revive the struggling firm.

“PBC as at this time should have been given a new CEO so that the staff may know that indeed when the government came, it has really listened to their grievances, which the previous administration failed to address,” he said.

“COCOBOD, with its debt stock of about 32 billion, still has the government’s keen interest in its activities, so why can’t the same government do anything about PBC? It is about three to four months in power, and nothing significant has been done for us to bring back the company to life,” he added.

PBC’s market share has plummeted from 30.88 percent in 2016 to just 8 percent in 2021, reflecting the company’s decline.

In January 2024, the Agricultural Development Bank (ADB) and five other banks secured a court order preventing the sale or transfer of PBC’s assets, including its headquarters at Number 106 Olusegun Obasanjo Way, Dzorwulu Junction, Accra.

In response to these challenges, PBC workers have staged multiple protests, demanding payment of their outstanding salaries and urgent action to restore the company’s viability.

Wasteful Ex-ECG Boss holds NDC ministers in his mud

…Friendship and business ties sighted

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) is once again, embroiled in controversy, raising fresh concerns over long-standing mismanagement and corruption within the state utility.

Despite consistent warnings from the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC), civil society organisations (CSOs), and investigative journalistic reports—most notably by The Herald—political elites and sections of the media, either ignored or actively resisted scrutiny of ECG’s operations.

Suspend mining for 3-4 years to reclaim lands – Ade Coker

0

Former Greater Accra Regional Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Joseph Ade Coker, has called for a complete ban on illegal mining (galamsey) and the suspension of small-scale mining to facilitate land reclamation efforts across the country.

Speaking on Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily on Wednesday, April 2, Ade Coker stressed the need for decisive action to protect Ghana’s natural resources from further destruction.

He also suggested that large-scale mining companies temporarily halt operations for at least three to four years to allow for land restoration.

“Galamsey should be banned; small-scale mining should be suspended. The big companies should be set aside for the next three to four years to reclaim our land. How much are we getting from our gold? The last time I heard, $2 billion worth of Ghana’s gold was exported to Dubai, and out of that $2 billion, most of it was smuggled. Ghana gained just peanuts from it,” he stated.

Ade Coker also emphasized the importance of tracking excavators used in mining operations to prevent illegal activities.

“We should have an inventory of all the excavators in this country. We should find out which excavator is in road construction and how many are in mining, then call the owners to bring them to designated places,” he added.

Meanwhile, in a related development, the Western Central Regional Police Command has arrested 11 individuals for engaging in illegal mining activities along the Bonsa River in the Western Region.

The suspects—seven Ghanaians and four Chinese nationals—were apprehended on March 31, 2025, as part of an intelligence-led operation aimed at tackling illegal mining in the region.

Agbodza orders urgent repairs on Ashaiman-Afienya, Tema Motorway-Dawhyena roads

0

Kwame Governs Agbodza, the Minister for Roads and Highways, has taken decisive action to address the worsening road conditions along two key stretches in the Greater Accra Region.

In a move aimed at easing the traffic congestion faced by commuters, the Minister instructed two local contractors, First Sky Group and Ozwald Construction, to immediately mobilise resources and commence construction works on the Ashaiman-Afienya stretch and the Tema Motorway to Dawhyena stretch.

The Minister’s intervention comes after mounting public frustration over the deteriorating state of these vital roadways.

In a press briefing on Tuesday, April 1, following an emergency inspection of the affected areas, Agbodza underscored the immediate need for corrective action.

He highlighted that the roads, which serve as critical arteries for the movement of goods and people in the region, have become increasingly congested and unsafe due to poor road conditions and traffic gridlock.

“Immediately, I am asking First Sky Group to help remedy all that we can do to ease the problem on the motorway runabout towards Central University. And immediately, I am asking Ozwald to also work on the Ashaiman round about beyond Michel Camp and everything we can do as a remedial activity to improve the surface of the road, we will do it.

“They should move in as quickly as possible…we can mobilise under the guidance of the chief executive of Highways to limit the suffering of our people immediately. Within two months, we want this project to be started. So to all those suffering on this corridor, help is coming.”

If You Are A Board Chair, It Is Finished–Mussa Dankwah

News Hub Creator11h

Mussa Dankwah has sent shockwaves through Ghana’s business and political landscape with a stark warning: “If you are a board chair and you receive an order from above on a transaction, ask the person from above to put it into writing. If you can’t prove that there is a formal instruction, it is FINISHED.”

His statement highlights a troubling yet all-too-common practice in Ghana’s governance system—powerful figures issuing verbal directives for transactions, only to deny involvement when controversies arise. This pattern has led to significant scandals, from banking sector collapses to procurement fraud, where those who execute the orders—CEOs, board chairs, and executives—face severe legal consequences while the real masterminds remain untouched.

Dankwah’s warning has struck a chord with many, especially in light of recent high-profile cases where top executives were prosecuted while politicians who allegedly orchestrated financial mismanagement escaped accountability. The aftermath of Ghana’s banking sector cleanup is a glaring example—several CEOs were imprisoned, yet many believe the true architects of the crisis avoided justice.

The public response to Dankwah’s remarks has been swift and intense. Social media users have advised professionals in leadership positions to always demand written directives, ensuring they have documented proof of instructions. Others argue that resignation might be the safest route for those unwilling to risk becoming scapegoats in politically charged financial transactions.

Dankwah’s statement serves as a stark reminder of the risks professionals face in Ghana’s political and business circles. In a system where accountability is often elusive, his advice is clear: without written proof, there is no protection.

Lionel Messi’s bodyguard no longer on sidelines for Miami games

0

Lionel Messi’s bodyguard Yassine Cheuko expressed frustration after saying he was no longer allowed to protect the Argentina forward from the sidelines during Inter Miami matches.

Cheuko gained widespread recognition after social media videos showed him closely watching the crowd to stop potential pitch invaders from harming the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner.

“They don’t allow me to be on the field anymore,” the bodyguard said in an interview with social media channel House of Highlights.

“I was in Europe for seven years, working for Ligue 1 and the Champions League, and only six people invaded the pitch.

“I came to the USA and in just 20 months, 16 people have already done so. There’s a huge problem here. I’m not the problem. Let me help Messi.”

An Inter Miami team spokesperson told ESPN it was a club decision, not MLS’, to not have Cheuko on the sidelines. However, he remains an employee of the club and part of the security detail.

Major League Soccer said earlier on Tuesday that its protocols regarding team security guards had not changed and multiple sides had designated team security guards that are stationed near team benches on the field.

‘Don’t be surprised if someone other than King Promise or King Paluta wins Artiste of the Year’ – KOKA

Entertainment pundit KOKA Entertainment pundit KOKA

Entertainment pundit Kwaku Osei Korankye Asiedu, popularly known as KOKA, has sent a message to fans tipping either King Paluta and King Promise for the ‘Artiste of the Year’ award.

In a discussion on AdomTV shared on Instagram on March 31, KOKA noted that the award scheme is full of surprises and advised Ghanaians not to be astonished if, on the big day, someone other than Paluta or King Promise is awarded ‘Artiste of the Year’.

“King Promise has dedicated a brand for himself and he knows what he is doing. Stonebwoy has also done well but he didn’t stage a show in Asia like what King Promise did… I have always believed that the competition was between King Paluta and King Promise.

“TGMAs is the only award scheme that changes their rule every year. So, people shouldn’t be surprised to see a different person winning that category. We should know that the god of TGMAs has done it again,” he stated.

KOKA further expressed disappointment in the TGMAs board for not including Kofi Kinaata in the ‘Artiste of the Year’ category.

“TGMA is full of surprises and up to now, I don’t know why Kofi Kinaata couldn’t make it to that category. Everyone knows what we did with digital numbers so far as the scheme is concerned. But if they see that it is not going in their favour they will now say they are using airplay. And we know that doesn’t work in Ghana. But I feel it’s between King Paluta and King Promise,” he added.

Come and give account of gold bars you seized at Sapeiman – Minority to National Security

The Minority Caucus in Parliament has demanded answers from the National Security regarding the interception and seizure of a large stash of gold bars and cash, hidden in 12 containers at a warehouse at Sapeiman, in February 2025.

Addressing the press on behalf of the Minority, the Member of Parliament for Assin South, Rev John Ntim Fordjour, criticised the state security agency for failing to provide updates on the matter, specifically regarding arrests made and the quantity of gold bars and cash seized at the warehouse.

He also called on the government to disclose its plans for the seized items, emphasising the Minority’s role in ensuring accountability and transparency.

“Nearly two months after this operation, National Security has failed to brief the public on the status of their investigation relating to the culprits behind the billions of cash and gold stashed in the 12 containers and failed to disclose the actual quantity of gold and the specific amount of money retrieved during the operation and what the state intends to do with the gold and cash currently in the custody of National Security,” he stated.

Ntim Fordjour further alleged a potential collusion between the government and the National Security to divert the 12 containers containing cash and gold bars.

He suggested that the diversion plan might be aimed at misleading the public by labeling the items as counterfeit, thus allowing those involved to evade accountability.

“We demand accountability and demand National Security to give accounts of the gold bars and the cash retrieved and what they intend to do with it. The legitimate question Ghanaians are asking is does the government, through National Security, intend to divert the 12 containers filled with gold and cash, only to turn around to deceive the public in the end and probably call the gold as fake and the cash as counterfeit?” he asked.

The lawmaker assured the public of the Minority’s commitment to hold the government accountable and ensure that all details surrounding the gold bust are made transparent, free from secrecy.

“The public is, hereby, assured that the mighty Minority will not rest and relent until credible communication on the status of the 12 containers filled with gold and cash is transparently made to the general public by the Minister of Interior with additional responsibility for National Security and corporates duly prosecuted,” he added.

Background

On February 9, 2025, National Security officers intercepted a massive stash of counterfeit US dollars, Ghanaian cedi notes, and suspected gold bars hidden in 12 shipping containers at a warehouse in Sapeiman, Accra.

The containers were tracked to a warehouse around Sapeiman in the Ga South Municipality, where a special late-night operation was conducted following a tip-off.

The unspecified amount of US dollars and Ghana cedis seized by the security officials including counterfeits were hidden in twelve 20ft shipping containers.

The fake currencies, mostly bundles of US dollars, were found in wooden boxes covered with cement.

Additional currencies suspected to be counterfeit were discovered stashed in the boxes, which were sealed with plywood and covered with charcoal.

Two containers were still unaccounted for but were being tracked. Boxes of metals suspected to be gold bars and fake Ghana Army uniforms and boots were also found.

Additionally, a manhunt was launched for suspects, including a ringleader known as Alhaji.

Green transition must not undermine global food security – Dr Ali tells UN agency

0

Navy Captain Kamal-Deen Ali Navy Captain Kamal-Deen Ali

As the global community ratchets up efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, the transition to green and cleaner energies must not negatively affect food security especially for developing and vulnerable countries.

This is because access to nutritious food in adequate quantities by all those who need it is a fundamental human right – a fact which must not be overlooked in the pursuit of greenhouse reduction measures.

The Director-General of the Ghana Maritime Authority, Navy Captain Kamal-Deen Ali (Rtd.), PhD., said these at the 18th Meeting of the Inter-Sessional Working Group on reduction of Greenhouse Gas emissions from ships, at the International Maritime Organization (IMO) in London.

The meeting, organized by the IMO – an agency of the United Nations – continued the discussions on the technical and economic (mid-term) measures that are needed to support the implementation of greenhouse reduction measures in the shipping industry as outlined in the 2023 IMO GHG Strategy.

Dr. Ali commended the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) of the IMO for serving as a platform for a comprehensive impact assessment of the implementation of the mid-term measures on food security, saying that was extremely helpful in the decision-making process.

The Ghanaian delegation took cognizance of the findings of the literature review conducted by the World Maritime University on behalf of IMO relating to the impact of the mid-term measures on maritime logistics cost – which is likely to increase after the adoption of the measures – with potentially corresponding negative impact on food security.

“We reiterate that the concerns with the impact on food security for Ghana does not only pertain to essential food commodities, but also to critical agricultural inputs, such as fertilizers and machinery, that would ensure food security for our country and many other countries in Africa,” the Director-General observed.

He stressed that, “The negative impact on food security will, therefore, increase the food import wage bill and erode livelihoods of millions of people in Africa.” While over 90percent of globally traded goods is transported by sea, the maritime industry is, at the same time, a significant contributor to greenhouse gas emissions, primarily through the burning of fossil fuels by ships.

The IMO has thus been actively working on reducing greenhouse gas emissions from ships and has since July 2023, set an ambitious target of reaching net-zero emissions by or around 2050. The implementation of the measures to curb emissions will in turn increase the cost of maritime logistics with a cascading rise in cost of food in many parts of the world, something the Ghanaian delegation was chiefly concerned about.

Ghana, therefore, called for further empirical assessment of the impact of the measures on food security in developing countries. This, Dr Ali observed, would ensure that remedial measures are put in place to mitigate the impacts before the adoption and coming into force of the measures.

“We want to emphasize that addressing negative impact on food security is a humanitarian issue and a responsibility of the (International Maritime) Organization, and should take center stage in whichever measure(s) that would be adopted,” the GMA DG emphasised.

The maritime expert said, “As a developing African country, which is already climate vulnerable and with an economy that is highly susceptible to shocks, there is no doubt that we will experience disproportionate negative impacts in the implementation of the mid-term IMO GHG measures.”

He pointed out the findings from the IMO comprehensive impact assessment that show potentially “negative impacts on our GDP, consumer prices in general, and food security— a price too heavy to pay for implementing the GHG measures, if no conscious remedial measures are put in place.”

Dr. Ali cautioned that Ghana would not be “in support of a measure that would affect our economy, derail our development priorities and increase Ghana’s economic vulnerabilities.” He, therefore, entreated the IMO to consider the development priorities of African countries by designing measures that would ensure minimal impact on economies.

GBA rejects calls for Boxing League to be suspended over Nigerian boxer’s death

Mohammed Lamptey is the Communications Director of the GBA Mohammed Lamptey is the Communications Director of the GBA

The Communications Director of the Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA), Mohammed Amin Lamptey, has confirmed that the Ghana Boxing League will continue despite the tragic demise of Nigerian boxer Gabriel Oluwasegun Olanrewaju during a bout.

According to him, although the misfortune has brought sadness to the entire sporting fraternity in the country, it is not enough to warrant the suspension of the league.

The communications director likened the situation to how the accidental death of someone while performing their duties would not halt operations for other colleagues in the field.

Speaking in an interview with Citi Sports, Lamptey clarified that the GBA does not intend to suspend the boxing league and will continue as scheduled.

“It’s normal. It’s just like you and I are journalists. So, if today a colleague of ours has gone to cover an event and coincidentally or accidentally the person got injured and died in the process. Must we also say that we aren’t going to practice journalism again? I don’t think so,” he said.

Gabriel Oluwasegun collapsed during a bout against Ghana’s John Mbanugu on Saturday, March 29, 2025, at the Bukom Boxing Arena and was later pronounced dead at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital.

The Minister of Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has stated that the government will set up a committee to investigate the circumstances that led to the incident to ensure justice is served.

Forbes 2025 top 10 World’s richest women

Women continue to be significantly underrepresented on Forbes’ World’s Billionaires list, though their numbers are gradually increasing. In 2025, 406 of the 3,028 billionaires—just 13.4%—are women.

This marks a slight rise from 2024, when 369 women made the list, accounting for 13.3%. While progress remains slow, the data reflects a steady, albeit marginal, shift in global wealth distribution.

Dominic Ayine and Edudzi Tameklo Should Be Blamed For Missing ECG Containers

0

In social media post, political commentator affiliated with the New Patriotic Party and columnist P.K. Sarpong alleged that the Electricity Company of Ghana engaged the services of two lawyers, Dr. Dominic Ayine and Edudzi Tameklo, during the eight-year administration of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. According to him, these legal representatives played a key role in justifying ECG’s procurements, which, he claims,. were undertaken without the necessary approvals from the Public Procurement Authority(PPA).

P.K Sarpong further asserted that the two lawyers were compensated in thousands of dollars for their services to ECG. He suggested that if the state-owned power distributor is currently facing public scrutiny, responsibility should largely fall on the legal advisors who were involved in its transactions between 2017 and 2024.

“Let it be known to the entire Ghanaian public that for the 8 years of President Akufo-Addo, the Electricity Company of Ghana, ECG, employed the services of Dominic Ayine and Edudzi Tamakloe.

These two lawyers justified the numerous procurements by ECG without approvals from the Public Procurement Authority, PPA.

The duo were paid thousands of dollars by ECG for the services they rendered to it.

If today ECG is in the news for all the bad reasons, it is just fair that those who were their legal representatives ought to take the lion’s share of the blame.

These containers which were stationed at the Tema Port for months if not years because of contractual issues must be blamed on Ayine and Adudzi.

Sunshine must be brought to all the issues, angles and people who played pivotal roles in the mess that ECG found itself in.

The current Attorney General, Dr. Dominic Ayine and Edudzi Tamakloe were integral figures in whatever decisions ECG’s management took between 2017 and 2024.”He wrote.

West Ham Coach Reacts to Mohammed Kudus’ Absence in Defeat to Wolves: “It Was Difficut”

0

  • Mohammed Kudus was conspicuously missing from West Ham United’s matchday squad against Wolves on Tuesday night
  • The Ghanaian international’s absence led to fans of the club thinking it was an April Fools’ Day prank
  • But following the painful defeat at the Molineux, head coach Graham Potter has reacted to Kudus’ absence from the team

West Ham United head coach Graham Potter addressed Mohammed Kudus’ absence following his side’s 1-0 defeat to Wolverhampton Wanderers on Tuesday night.

Despite controlling large phases of the contest, the Hammers lacked sharpness in attack, succumbing to their second loss in three matches.

West Ham coach Graham Potter admitted Mohammed Kudus' absence from his side made life difficult for him.

West Ham’s lack of cutting edge without Kudus

Although Potter praised his team’s ability to dictate play, the lack of creativity and clinical finishing proved costly as Jørgen Strand Larsen’s deflected first-half effort gave Wolves all three points at stake, as reported by the BBC.

Without Kudus, West Ham struggled to carve open clear-cut opportunities, with Evan Ferguson, who started in place of the Ghanaian, spurning a glorious chance early on.

The Republic of Ireland forward, fresh from scoring during the international break, failed to capitalise on a gilt-edged opening before being withdrawn for Niclas Füllkrug.

The German, returning after three months out with a hamstring injury, provided a much-needed focal point, going close with a looping header that struck the crossbar.

Despite an improved second-half display, Potter’s men couldn’t find an equaliser, as Emerson and Tomáš Souček both found the side netting with promising late attempts.

West Ham coach admits Kudus’ absence was felt

Reflecting on the defeat, Potter acknowledged how Kudus and Jean-Clair Todibo’s late withdrawals disrupted their game plan.

“It was difficult, we lost Mo [Kudus] to injury yesterday and Todibo as well, so we had to readjust quickly,” he shared on West Ham’s official website.

While no timeline was given for Kudus’ return, the Black Stars playmaker is expected back sooner rather than later.

Kudus’ form this season and the task ahead

Since his electrifying debut season, Kudus has yet to replicate the same goal-scoring influence.

According to Transfermarkt, the 24-year-old has managed just three goals and one assist in 24 Premier League outings, a stark contrast to his eight goals and six assists last term.

However, after breaking his 431-day international goal drought with Ghana, Kudus will be eager to end his current 13-game barren run for West Ham.

Potter will hope his return against Antoine Semenyo’s AFC Bournemouth on April 5 injects the much-needed spark in the final third.

Ghana enacts groundbreaking Public Financial Management Act to enhance fiscal discipline

0

Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, Minister of Finance Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, Minister of Finance

The Ministry of Finance has announced the passage of the Public Financial Management (Amendment) Act, 2025, a landmark legislation aimed at bolstering fiscal discipline, accountability, and ensuring long-term economic stability in Ghana.

This comprehensive reform introduces stricter oversight mechanisms, enforces rigorous fiscal responsibility rules, and establishes an independent Fiscal Council to enhance transparency and compliance.

Key Reforms Introduced by the PFM (Amendment) Act, 2025

1. Enhanced Sanctions for Fiscal Mismanagement:

• The Minister of Finance faces censure under Article 82 of the Constitution for any breaches of fiscal rules.

• Ministers of State and Heads of Covered Entities are subject to potential imprisonment for actions contributing to fiscal slippages.

2. New Fiscal Responsibility Measures:

• Implementation of a primary balance rule mandating an annual surplus of at least 1.5% of GDP on a commitment basis.

• Establishment of a public debt ceiling, capping the debt-to-GDP ratio at 45% by 2034 to ensure debt sustainability.

3. Creation of an Independent Fiscal Council:

• A legislated, autonomous Fiscal Council tasked with monitoring adherence to fiscal responsibility rules, thereby ensuring budget credibility and macroeconomic stability.

4. Strengthened Oversight and Accountability:

• Requirement for the Minister of Finance to obtain Parliamentary or Cabinet approval before suspending fiscal rules due to force majeure or unforeseen economic conditions.

5. Consolidation of Fiscal Management Laws:

• Unification of all fiscal rules under a single legal framework, eliminating redundancies and enhancing enforcement mechanisms.

With the enactment of this law, the Fiscal Responsibility Act, 2018 (Act 982) has been repealed, and the Presidential Fiscal Advisory Council dissolved, streamlining oversight under the newly established independent Fiscal Council.

The passage of these critical reforms, well ahead of the September 2025 deadline for the IMF-supported program, demonstrates the Ministry of Finance’s unwavering commitment to restoring fiscal discipline, enhancing transparency, and securing Ghana’s long-term economic resilience.

The Ministry remains dedicated to ensuring full implementation of these laws and will collaborate closely with all stakeholders to uphold Ghana’s macroeconomic stability and prosperity.

More efforts needed to reduce inflation to desired levels

0

The Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr. Johnson Asiama has indicated that while inflation remains a concern, future rate adjustments will depend on economic developments.

He acknowledged the progress in tackling inflation but insists that additional measures are required to bring it down to desired levels.

Addressing the press after the 123rd Monetary Policy Committee meeting, Dr. Johnson Asiama stressed the need for sustained policy efforts to maintain price stability and ease the cost of living pressures on businesses and households.

“As inflation becomes firmly anchored, the Committee will reassess the scope for a gradual easing in the policy stance,” he said.

As of February 2025, Ghana’s inflation rate stood at 23.2%, reflecting a steady decline from the peak of 54.1% recorded in December 2022.

The BoG attributes this progress to tight monetary policies, improved food supply conditions, and relative stability in the foreign exchange market. However, inflation remains above the central bank’s target range of 6–10%, prompting calls for further action.

“The disinflation process is ongoing, but risks remain. To consolidate these gains, monetary and fiscal discipline must be maintained while addressing supply-side constraints that contribute to inflationary pressures.” he added.

The Bank of Ghana already raised the policy rate by 100 basis points to 28.0%, citing persistent inflationary pressures and the need to maintain macroeconomic stability. The move, it notes, is intended to re-anchor inflation expectations and prevent second-round effects from elevated food and non-food prices.

Macroeconomic Trends

Ghana’s economy recorded stronger-than-expected growth in 2024, with real GDP expanding by 5.7%, driven by robust performance in the industry and services sectors.

However, inflationary pressures persisted, largely due to supply chain disruptions, adverse weather conditions affecting agriculture, and fiscal slippages.

On the fiscal side, the government’s 2024 deficit widened to 7.9% of GDP, significantly above the target of 3.8%. This expansionary stance contributed to a liquidity overhang, prompting the central bank to tighten monetary policy.
