America’s 10% Tariff: Africa’s Golden Opportunity

0

The United States’ decision to impose a 10% tariff on all imports marks a pivotal moment in global trade dynamics. While policymakers in Washington may argue that this move protects domestic industries and reduces dependency on foreign goods, the long-term consequences could be far-reaching.

This policy, rather than strengthening U.S. dominance, could signal the beginning of a declining phase in American hegemony and weaken its leadership in the global economic order. At the same time, this shift presents an unprecedented opportunity for the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) to emerge as a formidable player in global commerce.

The Declining Phase of American Hegemony

For decades, the U.S. has been the epicentre of the world economy, setting the rules of global trade through multilateral institutions and strategic alliances.

However, the imposition of broad tariffs on imports suggests a shift toward protectionism, a strategy that historically backfires by triggering retaliatory measures, reducing trade efficiency, and eroding diplomatic goodwill. Here’s how this tariff could accelerate America’s decline as the dominant global economic force:

1. Erosion of Free Trade Leadership

The U.S. has long been a champion of free-market capitalism, advocating for global trade liberalization through agreements such as WTO regulations, and bilateral trade deals. A blanket 10% tariff contradicts these very principles, making it harder for the U.S. to argue against protectionist policies in other nations.

Countries that once followed America’s trade model may now look toward alternative economic leadership, particularly from China and the European Union.

2. Strengthening of Economic Rivals

While the U.S. is imposing import taxes, China is expanding its trade footprint through the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), strengthening ties with Africa, Asia, and Latin America.

The EU is deepening its economic alliances through expanded trade agreements. Meanwhile, BRICS nations (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa) are actively promoting de-dollarization and alternative financial systems. By isolating itself with protectionist policies, the U.S. risks pushing its trade partners toward rival economic blocs, weakening its global influence.

3. Declining Trust in the U.S. Dollar

One of the pillars of U.S. economic hegemony is the dominance of the U.S. dollar (USD) as the world’s reserve currency. This dominance is maintained through global trade reliance on the USD for transactions and foreign exchange reserves.

However, if countries begin diversifying their trade away from the U.S. due to these tariffs, they may seek alternative settlement mechanisms in Chinese yuan, euros, or regional currencies, further reducing reliance on the USD and diminishing American financial power.

4. Global Supply Chain Reconfigurations

American firms that rely on imports for production, ranging from tech companies to automotive manufacturers, will face higher costs, making their products less competitive globally. In contrast, competitors in Asia, Europe, and Africa could step in to fill the supply chain void left by weakened American trade relationships.

The AfCFTA: A Blessing in Disguise

As the U.S. retreats into protectionism, Africa has a unique opportunity to strengthen its economic integration through the AfCFTA. Launched in 2021, AfCFTA is the largest free trade area by the number of participating countries, aiming to boost intra-African trade, industrialization, and economic self-sufficiency. Here’s how the U.S. tariff shift could accelerate Africa’s economic rise:

1. Increased Trade Diversification

With reduced U.S. trade appeal, African nations will be incentivized to trade more with one another, strengthening regional supply chains and reducing reliance on external partners. For example, Ghana, which exports cocoa to the U.S., can shift towards processing more cocoa locally and selling finished chocolate products within Africa, capturing greater value.

2. Attraction of Foreign Investment

As the U.S. creates barriers for global commerce, investors seeking new markets with lower trade restrictions may turn to Africa. The AfCFTA provides a 1.4-billion-person market with zero intra-African tariffs, making it an attractive destination for manufacturing, tech, and agriculture-based industries.

For instance, automotive giants like Volkswagen and Toyota are already expanding operations in Ghana, Rwanda, and South Africa to serve the African market rather than relying on Western exports.

3. Strengthening Africa’s Industrial Base

Africa has historically been an exporter of raw materials rather than finished goods. However, with reduced Western trade dominance, African countries have the chance to scale up local production.

Nations like Nigeria, Egypt, and South Africa are investing in textiles, pharmaceuticals, and automotive industries, allowing them to become suppliers of finished goods to their neighbours instead of depending on imports from the U.S. or Europe.

4. Empowering African Currencies

If African nations increase intra-continental trade under AfCFTA, the reliance on the U.S. dollar for trade settlements could decline. More countries could adopt regional trade settlement systems using local currencies, strengthening African financial independence.

5. Reducing African Dependence on the U.S. and China

The U.S. tariff policy inadvertently encourages Africa to build a self-sufficient economy, reducing reliance on American and Chinese imports.

For instance, African tech startups can focus on localized innovations instead of depending on expensive American hardware, fostering a new era of industrialization.

Conclusion: A Turning Point in Global Economic Power

The U.S. 10% import tariff is not merely a domestic policy; it has global ramifications that could accelerate America’s decline as the dominant economic superpower.

While the move may aim to protect American jobs and industries, it risks alienating trade partners, reducing global confidence in the U.S. dollar, and opening doors for economic rivals like China and the European Union.

For Africa, however, this shift is a strategic blessing in disguise. As the U.S. turns inward, the AfCFTA can step up to fill the void, integrate Africa’s economies, and position the continent as the next global manufacturing and trade hub.

By leveraging this moment, Africa can transform from a raw-materials exporter into a competitive economic powerhouse, rewriting its role in the world order.

As global power realigns, the question is no longer whether the U.S. will maintain its hegemony but whether Africa will seize this moment to emerge as the next global economic frontier.

Even the mighty Otumfuo spoke with care under Akufo-Addo – A Plus slams NPP for criticising NDC govt

Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II

Independent Member of Parliament for Gomoa Central, Kwame Asare-Obeng, popularly known as A Plus, has stated that the culture of silence under the erstwhile New Patriotic Party (NPP) government, led by former President Akufo-Addo, was so intense that even the powerful King of the Ashanti Kingdom, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, was very cautious when criticizing that administration.

According to A Plus, a controversial musician-turned-politician, the King chose to critique the former administration’s flagship programme only after it had left power.

“I am not an Ashanti, but I revere the Asantehene because of the way he has been able to hold the Ashanti Kingdom together and ensure that there are no chieftaincy disputes in his jurisdiction. God bless him for that. I have so much respect for Otumfuo. A whole Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, when Akufo-Addo was president, was very careful whenever he spoke.

“He never commented on the Free SHS programme until Akufo-Addo exited office. When the NPP was in power, Ghanaians could not speak up. Today, John Mahama is president, and NPP supporters are all over the place complaining. Ghanaians should not take the NPP seriously,” A Plus said in an interview with Adom FM, as monitored by GhanaWeb.

He further criticized the NPP, asserting that the party lacks the moral authority to criticize the Mahama government, which has been in office for only three months.

“Just a few months after the NPP left power, they have found their voices and are talking, while the NDC is looking on. Even some of us who were with the NPP and campaigned to get them into power in 2017 are verbally assaulted when we speak. John Mahama is human; when you make an allegation, he orders for the claim to be investigated. The likes of Bullgod were arrested for criticizing the NPP government. I don’t know the source of the NPP’s confidence. Their conduct makes me angry. You left power recently, and you are always talking since the NDC came to power, as if you are the true owners of the country.”

Are you the same A Plus who is now mute because of GH¢400K? – Paul Adom-Otchere questions Gomoa Central MP

Former Board Chairman of the Ghana Airports Company Limited, Paul Adom-Otchere, has accused the Member of Parliament for Gomoa Central in the Central Region, Kwame Asare Obeng, popularly known as A Plus, of being influenced by money to remain silent in his advocacy.

According to Adom-Otchere, who doubles as media personality and host of Good Evening Ghana on Metro TV, A Plus, who is widely known for openly criticizing the ills of government, has suddenly gone quiet due to alleged monetary inducement from the ruling government.

Speaking on his Good Evening Ghana show, Adom-Otchere maintained his position, accusing A Plus of receiving GHC 200,000 and an extra GHC 100,000 for a project in his constituency, and allegedly pocketing the funds to silence his once-vocal criticism of government.

He further claimed that A Plus has benefited from a GHC 400,000 parliamentary fund and has, as a result, lost his credibility as someone who used to hold governments accountable.

“A Plus, are you the same person? Are you the same A Plus who is now taking GHC 200,000 in Parliament that you claim will be used for a project in your constituency, and an extra GHC 150,000?” he questioned.

“Are you the same person who saw so much corruption in the NDC government and even played a song for the NPP to win power?

“When the NPP came into power, you said they were thieves and went on UTV to criticize them. But now, what are you doing? Is that the reason why we voted for you? To join Parliament and receive GHC 400,000 in your pocket when we can’t even pay BECE registration fees? Kwame A Plus, our ‘saviour’, is this what politics does to people?” Adom-Otchere added.

Meanwhile, A Plus has denied the allegations of pocketing any GHC 200,000.

He explained that the funds in question are part of a government policy to support development projects by Members of Parliament.

According to him, the money, which he is yet to receive, will not pass through him directly but will be disbursed through the District Assembly for the intended development works.

Salaga South MP advocates reparations to Africa

0

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Salaga South, Zuwera Mohammed Ibrahimah, has said that Africans deserve reparations from the West to address the “historical injustices and injurious crimes committed against Africans and people of African descent through the transatlantic enslavement, colonisation and apartheid”.

She explained that such a gesture would also “address the inequities present in the international economic and political orders, as well as demonstrate the progress of reparatory justice and healing for Africans and for all people of African descent”.

Addressing the subject in Parliament on Friday in the wake of the theme for the AU’s 38th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of the AU held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, from February 15–16, 2025, the MP said an earlier conference held in Accra on reparations had proposed the establishment of a “Committee of Experts on Reparations, to develop an African Common Position on Reparations”.

The 38th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of the AU was on the theme: “Justice for Africans and People of African Descent Through Reparations”.

The Accra Reparations Conference held from November 14 to 17, 2023 in Ghana’s capital, was the culmination of years of advocacy for adequate compensation from the West to Africa and its people for the injuries occasioned by the transatlantic slave trade, colonisation, and other dehumanising actions.

Ms Ibrahimah, reiterating a statement she had made on the floor of Parliament earlier this year, said the Accra Reparations Conference had further proposed a Committee of Experts on Reparations to develop an African Common Position on Reparations; a reference group of legal experts to work led by the Commission and including the judicial and quasi-judicial organs; the establishment of a global reparations fund based in Africa; and the establishment of a transcontinental partnership framework embracing the AU, the African Diaspora in Latin America, North America, Europe, UK, and other relevant identifiable groups to build a strong common front in pursuit of reparations and reparatory justice at the global level.

The proposal falls in line with the proposition of various individuals who recently shared their views regarding how Africa could pursue the reparations agenda.

In the summary of their views, they proposed a common Pan-African movement to champion the project to elicit the ultimate goal of compelling the West to compensate Africa and its people for the injustices they suffered from the slave trade and other dehumanising activities.

Ghanaians are gradually losing faith in the NDC govt’s ability to stop galamsey – CenPOA

0

Michael Donyina Mensah, Executive Director of the Centre for Public Awareness and Opinion Michael Donyina Mensah, Executive Director of the Centre for Public Awareness and Opinion

Michael Donyina Mensah, Executive Director of the Centre for Public Awareness and Opinion (CenPOA), claims that Ghanaians are losing faith in the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) government’s ability to put an end to illegal mining activities known as galamsey.

Michael Donyina Mensah stated that it is a bit too early to conclude that the NDC’s commitment to the fight against galamsey was inadequate, given the promises made in opposition.

But was quick to add that it appears they are not demonstrating any seriousness towards the fight against illegal mining.

He opined that it would not be wrong to declare that the NDC is being slow in the fight against galamsey.

“First of all, I will state that it is a bit too early to say that the NDC is not demonstrating commitment in the fight against galamsey.

“But on the other hand, we have noticed that the seriousness with which Ghanaians thought they would tackle the galamsey is not there. So, you would be right in saying that their commitment in the fight against galamsey has been slow,’’ he said on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM.

He argued that while in opposition and judging from commentary made by President John Dramani Mahama, it appeared as if only members of the NPP and former appointees of the previous government were involved in galamsey.

“But it has now become clear that members of the NDC are also engaged in galamsey, and so if we reduce the galamsey menace to NDC and NPP politics, it would be extremely difficult to fight it.”

He noted that one of the most important things the NDC should have done to fulfil their campaign promises was to repeal Legislative Instrument (L.I.) 2462, which allowed mining in forest reserves rather than to amend it.

PlugOut •Time away in nature, wholesome conversations

0

Imagine being chauffeured out of the busy city to a serene farm at Pokrom, a town on the Aburi- Nsawam Road in the Eastern Region.

Upon arrival, you are welcomed with fresh, farm-to-table coconut, a variety of fruit juices, probiotic yogurt with granola and a selection of toppings. Then, your phone is taken away so you can unplug, network and simply spend some time in nature!

This and more were the offerings for the women who were part of the first edition of PlugOut at the Neville Farms Ghana last weekend.

Agrileisure Curator at the farm, Joyce Sackitey Ahiadorme, promised a fun and relaxing day in nature, and that’s exactly what she delivered.

After the welcome drinks and snacks, she led a session where each person introduced herself and shared an interesting activity or event they remember from specific years she mentioned.

Later, she led the group, who were now bonding into tasks and a short reading session intended to motivate them to stay focused despite the many challenges.

Neville Farm Ghana

The group task encouraged teamwork

By 2 p.m., lunch from the farm kitchen was ready with the highlight being the grilled or fried rabbit meat.

The farm, which has been in existence since 2020, has a 600-unit rabbit farm, whose droppings are used as manure for farming various vegetables, including pepper, tomatoes, cabbage and cucumbers.

Mrs Ahiadorme explained that the meals served on the farm are selected with nutrition and health as a priority and “incorporating the idea of forward integration where the rabbits we produce on the farm are used in creating delicious food for our guests as part of our marketing strategy.”

Rabbit meat is gaining popularity in Ghana, and while some members of the group who were not new to the delicacy couldn’t wait to dig in, the first-timers equally enjoyed the meat, with some ordering fresh or seasoned rabbit meat sold on the farm.

After lunch, the options were to take a farm tour, spend some time in nature under the sheds or on the hammock or sleep.

Those who opted to stay under the sheds or tour the farm continued with conversations until it was time to return to Accra.

In an interview with The Mirror, the host said the idea was to give guests, especially women who are usually the primary caregivers, the chance to recharge in a serene and natural environment.

“The farm models my love for nature and the things that fulfill and energise me as a person.
The idea behind PlugOut is to give women what I typically enjoy as a monthly routine. It is to allow them to take care of themselves as they create deeper bonds with other women and themselves in the most serene environment- nature.

“Nature is the purest way to healing and well-being. Everything we need is in nature and this is why we call on Ghanaians to explore nature and the Neville Farms Ghana for their outdoor activities,” she explained.

In addition to PlugOut, which is a monthly event, the farm, she added, was also open to host camping, corporate day retreats, photoshoots and family time out in nature.

Researcher and Educator, Dr Rachael Hansen-Garshong, who was on the trip, told The Mirror that the experience not only gave her time to reflect, but also to meet new people.

“These days, life moves so fast. Everyone is always in a rush, and being busy feels like the norm. That’s why it’s so important to be intentional about pausing to reflect—and that’s exactly what the PlugOut Hangout offered.

As someone who loves nature, the location couldn’t have been better—up in the mountains near Aburi, surrounded by lush greenery. It was just what I needed. I completely unplugged from technology—no phones, no laptops, no distractions—and just allowed myself to be present”, she said.

NCCE holds Constitution quiz in Binduri District

0

The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has organised a quiz competition among Junior High Schools (JHS), on the 1992 Constitution in the Binduri district in the Upper East Region.

The objective of the exercise was to deploy quizzes to promote learning on the content of the 1992 Constitution of Ghana.

It was also a strategy and tool used to create awareness of the main values of democratic governance to instill the spirit of patriotism and enhance citizens’ participation in governance at all levels.

The occasion, which formed part of the activities of the Commission, was to commemorate the 68th Independence celebration of Ghana, where students were engaged to bring to bear the knowledge they had acquired with respect to the 1992 Constitution.

Emmanuel Abass Laari, the Binduri District Director of the NCCE, during the exercise, thanked the patrons of participating schools for making time to be part of the programme despite their busy schedules.

He told the students that as young citizens, they had the responsibility to get involved in the development of the country as the theme for the Commission: “Ghana’s future: Our collective Responsibility,” stated.

The Director encouraged the students to attach more seriousness to civic education clubs in their respective schools since it was an avenue to equip them with varying knowledge on discipline, patriotism, hard work, love for one another, time management, as well as the basic principles of the Constitution, among others.

On the issue of the insecurity in the district, Laari encouraged the students to abide by the laws of Ghana, stay in school during school hours and be at home after school sessions so as to avoid being victims of any likely attack since the district had in recent times experienced series of attacks resulting in loss of lives.

Ezekiel Abugre, the Headmaster of Christian Academy and host school on behalf of the competing schools, expressed gratitude to the Commission for organising such an educative programme.

They also pledged to support the activities of the Commission since it played a vital role in improving the lives of the students.

The four schools that were part of the competition included Benguri Junior High School, Binduri Girls Model JHS, Christian Academy JHS, and Zaid Islamic JHS.

At the end of the competition, the Binduri Girls Model JHS emerged winner with 45 points, Christian Academy JHS placed second with 36 points, Benguri JHS came in third position with 31.5 points, while Zaid Islamic JHS had the fourth place with 27 points.

To motivate the students, awards were also given to the respective schools.

No diplomatic property will be sold under Mahama’s administration – Ablakwa

0

Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Minister of Foreign Affairs Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Minister of Foreign Affairs

Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to preserving the country’s diplomatic properties.

Speaking during a meeting with the Ghanaian community in Benin, Ablakwa emphasised that “Ghanaian missions and their property are for the state, bought with taxpayer funds, and none must sell or own it”.

This assurance comes on the heels of attempts to sell some properties belonging to Ghanaian missions abroad, a statement issued by Ablakwa and copied to the Ghana News Agency, Accra, has said.

It said Ablakwa warned that no diplomatic property, whether in Ghana or across Ghana’s 71 diplomatic missions abroad, would be available for sale under the current administration.

The minister also highlighted the government’s efforts to alleviate the burden on ordinary Ghanaians by scrapping ‘nuisance taxes.’

“President Mahama has assented to the bill to remove betting tax, emission levy, and the electronic transfer levy, and assured that in the next budget, the COVID recovery levy will go away,” the statement noted.

It said to strengthen ties with other countries and support Ghanaian businesses abroad, the foreign affairs minister tasked the mission to position itself strategically.

“Additionally, the Ministry plans to establish operational offices to facilitate easy access to passport acquisition and other legal documents for Ghanaians living abroad,” it added.

According to the statement, the minister’s commitment to preserving Ghana’s diplomatic properties is in line with the government’s stance on protecting the national interest.

“As the minister leading the Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL) committee, Ablakwa has been instrumental in halting the sale of diplomatic properties in Nigeria and Zambia, which was initiated by the previous administration,” the statement noted.

Here are four Ghanaian artistes whose album releases were the talk of town

0

Being able to produce and release an album as an artiste is an achievement on its own.

But having fans and potential fans listen to your album and talk about it for days on end is even better. (Whether for the right or wrong reasons) is a big deal.

In recent years, several Ghanaian album releases have generated significant anticipation and media attention before and after their release.

Here are some notable examples of artistes whose albums have been the talk of the town, specifically for their international impact and social media retention after their release.

Sarkodie:

In 2010, Sarkodie made records as the first artiste to win the ‘Discovery of the Year,’ ‘Artiste of the Year’ and ‘Album of the Year’ in his first appearance at the Ghana Music Awards. All thanks to his debut album ‘Makye’, which was released in 2009.

Since then, the rapper has made a name for himself with notable album releases featuring several local and international acts.

In 2013, “Sarkology,” Sarkodie’s third studio album, was accompanied by a major release concert at the Accra Sports Stadium, drawing over 15,000 attendees.

In 2024, Sarkodie released “The Championship,” a project that sparked a major beef between rappers in both Ghana and Nigeria. The pre-released song “BRAG” initiated a response from Nigerian rapper Dremo. Prompting retaliation from various Ghanaian rappers, including Lyrical Joe and others.

King Promise:

In 2019, King Promise made headlines after his debut ‘As Promised’ album became the most-streamed song on Spotify of all time.

In 2023, his 5 Star album won Album of the Year at the Telecel Ghana Music Awards.

His 2023 album, ‘True to Self,’ was an international hit, with songs like ‘Terminator’ becoming a social media hit and surpassing 200 million streams across major platforms.

This was followed by a world tour, which saw sold-out shows across Asia and Europe.

No stranger to awards, Stonebwoy’s first album ‘Grade 1’ propelled the Reggae/Dancehall artiste to the limelight with the hit track “Climax,” featuring Samini, being one of the hits that earned him nominations at the Ghana Music Awards in 2013.

His subsequent albums, including ‘Anloga Junction’ and ‘Epistles of Mama’ featured various hits which solidified his presence in the music industry.

But in 2023, Stonebwoy’s ‘5th Dimension’ album was a standout. Consisting of various hits, the album was followed by a world tour which climaxed with a massive (and controversial) event at the Accra Sports Stadium in 2023.

Black Sherif:

After his smash hit ‘Second Sermon,’ the young rapper from Konongo turned heads with his debut album, ‘The Villain I Never Was’ in 2022.

The album featured hits like ‘Kweku the Traveller,’ ‘45’ and ‘Soldier Soldier’ which bagged Black Sherif the Artiste of the Year and Album of the Year awards at the 2023 TGMAs.

Black Sherif’s Zama Disco concerts also helped etch the album in the sands of time. Proving that an album can have enough impact no matter how long ago it was released.

After teasing fans for more than two years, Black Sherif is finally out with his second album, ‘Iron Boy,’ which was released on April 2, 2025.

The album has been the talk of social media, especially with a particular song, “Where Then Boyz”, which many on social media are speculating as a diss song towards another artiste.

South African players not eager to travel abroad like Ghanaians

0

Former Black Leopards head coach Maxwell Konadu Former Black Leopards head coach Maxwell Konadu

Former Black Leopards head coach Maxwell Konadu has highlighted a key difference between Ghanaian and South African footballers.

According to Konadu, Ghanaian players have a stronger mentality and a greater desire to succeed abroad compared to their South African counterparts.

“Ghanaian players are always eager to travel to Europe,” Konadu said.

“A South African player grows up having almost everything a European player does. So, the hunger and drive to move abroad aren’t as intense.”

This difference in mindset, Konadu believes, gives Ghanaian players an edge in terms of mental toughness.

Konadu also noted that South African coaches are more unpredictable in their tactical approach compared to those in Ghana.

“In South Africa, each team has its identity, and you never know what to expect next,” he said. “In Ghana, you can often predict a coach’s tactics before a game.”

With experience in both leagues, Konadu’s insights provide a fascinating perspective on the contrasting football cultures of Ghana and South Africa. His comments highlight the unique strengths and approaches of each country’s football industry.

Rapper and singer Black Sherif Rapper and singer Black Sherif

Rapper and singer Black Sherif’s new album, Iron Boy, has received great support from fans and even seniors in the industry.

Dancehall singer Shatta Wale called it “a masterpiece,” and rapper Sarkodie who had the Country Side megahit with Sherif indicated nothing was greater than listening to the tape on the morning of its release, April 3.

“The sonics, the writing, the expression, the spiritual depth… Everything is so intense. I love it,” Efya added her voice.

Afro-Dancehall singer Stonebwoy applauded Sherif on rising from the slums of Konongo, Ashanti Region, and reaching the world with his music.

Rapper Kwaw Kesse expressed his amusement over Black Sherif calling an unnamed detractor a “cowboy from Ali Express,” lightheartedly noting Sherif would cause great trouble.

Nigerian rapper Odumodublvck, with whom Sherif has an Afrobeats megahit Wotowoto Seasoning, observed while his album was number one in Nigeria, Black Sherif’s was also the leader in Ghana, all on Apple Music. He again noted his tape, The Machine Is Coming, rhymed somehow with Sherif’s Iron Boy conceptually, noting: “Iron is used to make machines.”

Hearts of Oak coach blames venue uncertainty for Nations FC defeat

Hearts of Oak head coach, Aboubakar Ouattara Hearts of Oak head coach, Aboubakar Ouattara

Hearts of Oak head coach, Aboubakar Ouattara, has suggested that uncertainty over the match venue contributed to his team’s 1-0 defeat to Nations FC in Week 21 of the 2024-25 Ghana Premier League season.

The game, played at Tuba Park, saw Nations FC captain Razak Simpson score the decisive goal with a powerful strike.

In the days leading up to the match, Hearts of Oak faced uncertainty regarding their home venue.

Both the University of Ghana Stadium and the Accra Sports Stadium were unavailable due to various reasons.

Ouattara believes this disrupted the team’s preparation and affected their mentality heading into the game.

“When you don’t know the venue you are playing at 24 hours before the game and you are not well prepared on the psychological side, this is the result,” Ouattara said after the loss.

The defeat marks Hearts of Oak’s third defeat in four games, causing them to drop to sixth place in the standings.

Meanwhile, Nations FC continues to gain momentum in the competition, with Simpson’s goal proving crucial in securing their latest victory.

Week 26 Match Preview – Dreams FC vs Bibiani Gold Stars

0

Dreams FC will look to extend their revival when they host second-placed Bibiani Gold Stars at the Tuba Astro Turf on Sunday, April 6, 2025.

The Still Believe have turned the tide as they are unbeaten in their last seven league matches.

They have won all but two of those games, which ended in draws. Karim Zito would want to ensure his lads do not take their feet off the pedal.

The hosts sit in 8th position in the league standings with 33 points following the upturn in form, and they trail visiting Gold Stars by 11 points.

The Miners would be keen on banking all three points to turn the heat on league-leading Asante Kotoko.

Frimpong Manso knows this will be a tight contest for his side, and they would have to find a way through the Dreams’ back line, who have conceded just twice in six matches.

This is definitely a tasty match-up which could change the complexion of the title race with the Miners keen to stay firm in it and Dreams also bent on keeping up the momentum.

Ghanaians are gradually losing faith in the NDC govt’s ability to stop galamsey – CenPOA

Hearts of Oak head coach Aboubakar Ouattara Hearts of Oak head coach Aboubakar Ouattara

Hearts of Oak head coach Aboubakar Ouattara has admitted that his team was not at the level of Nations FC following their defeat on Thursday, April 3, 2025.

Hearts of Oak, who are enduring a poor run of form, lost 1-0 to Nations FC in the midweek clash at the Tuba Astroturf.

Speaking after the game, the former TP Mazembe technical director acknowledged Nations FC’s superiority.

“We lost to one of the most organized teams. We did everything right, but unfortunately, we continue to struggle with the same issue—the ability to score. We have a problem with that,” the Ivorian manager said.

“We lost, and we accept it. We accept that we didn’t do well,” Ouattara added.

Following the defeat, Hearts of Oak are now on a four-game winless run, having lost three of those matches.

They have dropped further down the table, putting their title aspirations in jeopardy. They currently sit 6th with 37 points.

The Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mubarak, has issued a stern warning to police personnel against the practice of converting foreigners into citizens during arrests.

He cautioned that any officers found engaging in this misconduct would face disciplinary action.

Speaking during a meeting with the Ashanti Regional Police Command at their headquarters today, the Minister expressed his displeasure over reports indicating that some officers had been changing the names of arrested foreigners to Ghanaian names.

He described the practice as unacceptable and a violation of law enforcement protocols.

Mr. Mubarak emphasized that such actions undermine the integrity of the police service and vowed to ensure accountability for officers involved.

In addition to addressing this issue, the Minister also spoke about a well-known drug peddling hotspot known as “Tinker Island” in the Manhyia South Constituency of the region.

He urged the regional police command to intensify their efforts and conduct a raid on the area within the next six months.

The Minister called for decisive action against drug peddling and misconduct within the police service, highlighting his commitment to upholding the rule of law and maintaining public safety.

Ghana launches 2025 World Physical Activity Day

TThe Ministry of Health has officially launched the 2025 World Physical Activity Day, alongside the 10th anniversary celebration of The New You Fitness, a wellness organization dedicated to promoting fitness and healthy lifestyles in Ghana.

Speaking during the event in Accra on April 3, 2025, the Chief Director of the Ministry, Alhaji Hafiz Adam, underscored the urgent need to tackle rising levels of physical inactivity and its consequences in Ghana.

“Active Today, Healthy Tomorrow: Empowering Ghanaians Through Physical Activity,” the theme for this year’s event, aligns with our vision of achieving a healthy population for national development,” he stated.

Citing the 2023 Ghana STEPS Report, Alhaji Adam noted that 9.9% of Ghanaians fail to meet the World Health Organization’s recommended 150 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity per week.

He highlighted that more women (14.6%) than men (5.5%) fall below the guideline—a gap that The New You Fitness has been actively working to bridge over the past decade.

Alhaji Adam emphasized the Ministry’s commitment to promoting physical activity through policy frameworks such as the National Health Policy, the Non-Communicable Diseases (NCD) Policy, and Ghana’s adoption of the WHO’s Global Action Plan on Physical Activity.

He further stressed the need to revise Ghana’s first Physical Activity and Dietary Guidelines, developed in 2013, to reflect current realities and inform future health strategies.

“We cannot do this in silos. Achieving better physical activity outcomes requires the support of all stakeholders: policymakers, development partners, healthcare providers, educators, civil society, fitness professionals, traditional leaders, and the private sector.”

As part of the outlined activities, Alhaji Adam announced that the Ministry, in partnership with The New You Fitness, will organize a nationwide health walk dubbed “The Ghana Walk” on May 10, 2025, to raise awareness and encourage regular physical activity among the population.

Hafez Adam Taher, Acting Director of Technical Coordination at the Ministry, called for stronger collaboration across sectors to reduce the burden of non-communicable diseases.

“The factors influencing physical inactivity are multifaceted. Embracing walking and cycling as part of our urban lifestyle can improve not only health but also environmental sustainability and economic productivity,” he said.

Renowned physical activity and sports researcher, Professor Emeritus Reginald Ocansey, also highlighted the cognitive and emotional benefits of exercise.

“There is research proving that individuals who engage in regular physical activity have sharper brains and improved emotional and social well-being,” he said.

Coach Hannah Afi Asumani, popularly known as Coach Hannah of The New You Fitness, reiterated the importance of combining exercise with healthy eating habits.

“A healthy diet and exercise are very, very good for the body; they help prolong life and prevent many diseases,” she stated.

Out of 4,700 applications, only 734 students were admitted based on merit Out of 4,700 applications, only 734 students were admitted based on merit

The Military Secretary to the Ghana Armed Forces, Air Commodore Adu-Gyamfi, has urged newly admitted students of the Ghana Armed Forces College of Nursing and Midwifery (GAFCONM) to uphold discipline, integrity, and responsibility as they begin their journey toward becoming professional nurses and midwives.

Speaking at the matriculation ceremony held at the 37 Military Hospital in Accra on April 4, 2025, Air Commodore Adu-Gyamfi reminded the students that while college life offers newfound freedoms, those freedoms must be exercised with caution and respect for others.

“You are joining this institution at a time that it has been upgraded to a degree-awarding college,” he said. “Very high academic standards are expected of you. This is a place where we train not just your mind, but also your character. You must exhibit self-discipline, proper conduct, and focus throughout your training.”

The ceremony formally welcomed 734 students, comprising the first cohort of Bachelor of Science in Nursing and Bachelor of Science in Midwifery students, into the College for the 2024/2025 academic year.

Delivering a speech on behalf of the Vice Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast (UCC), Dr. Atta Yeboah-Sarpong hailed GAFCONM as the first diploma-awarding health institution in Ghana to elevate its programmes to the bachelor’s level.

He praised the College’s affiliation with UCC, which he described as the top-ranked university in Ghana, best in West Africa, and 7th in Africa.

“Through our mentorship, UCC is committed to maintaining high educational standards and offering GAFCONM students a globally competitive education,” he said. “With a structured curriculum and exposure to cutting-edge research, these students will be well-equipped to meet the demands of the evolving healthcare landscape.”

Dr. Yeboah-Sarpong also encouraged the College to explore specialized bachelor’s and postgraduate programmes, particularly in critical areas such as oncology, perioperative, and geriatric nursing, while leveraging the capabilities of the 37 Military Hospital.

Acting Principal of GAFCONM, Major Bright Atta Addae, expressed pride in the College’s journey from a wartime nursing orderly training wing to its current status as a degree-awarding institution.

He noted that the College received over 4,700 applications, out of which only 734 students were admitted based on merit.

“This is a transformational journey, and we are committed to nurturing these students into skilled, compassionate, and patriotic health professionals ready to serve by land, sea, and air,” Major Addae said.

He highlighted ongoing challenges, including inadequate lecture halls, limited office space for staff, and the need for permanent lecturers, and called on the Ministry of Defence, UCC, and corporate Ghana to support the College.

‘We didn’t know it would take you so long to solve the Bawku conflict’- Youth group to Mahama

0

A youth group in Bawku in the Upper East Region has criticised President John Dramani Mahama for not resolving the ongoing conflict in the area, accusing the government of inaction despite promises made during the 2024 elections.

In a video shared on X by For the Records on Friday, April 4, 2025, the group accused the president of failing to live up to his commitments in spite of the high hopes they had when he assumed office.

“When we heard your promise to bring a lasting solution to the Bawku conflict, we were overwhelmed by it and thought the NDC was our saviour.

“We didn’t know it would take you so long to solve the Bawku issue when we voted you into power,” they added, pointing out the delayed response to a crisis that has claimed many lives”, they noted.

The group further blamed the two political parties in the country for using the conflict for political gains.

“We now realise that the politicians are using the Bawku conflict for their self-face political gains. Politicians keep deceiving us with their fake promises to bring lasting peace to Bawku just for us to vote them into power.

“Do you know that since your assumption of office as president, more than 18 people have been killed in this Bawku conflict, including women and children. Is that what you want?” the youth asked.

For decades, Bawku has been plagued by a conflict that has claimed hundreds of lives.

I’m not the investigator; ask National Security – Rev Ntim Fordjour defends cocaine plane claims

0

Assin South MP, Reverend John Ntim Fordjour, Assin South MP, Reverend John Ntim Fordjour,

Reverend John Ntim Fordjour, Ranking Member of Parliament’s Defense and Interior Committee, has responded to critics demanding proof of alleged cocaine smuggling on a Ghana-bound aircraft, asserting that it is not his responsibility to conduct investigations.

In an interview on Kumasi’s Pure FM, monitored by MyNewsGh, the Assin South MP clarified that verifying or debunking such a sensitive matter falls squarely under the jurisdiction of National Security, not Parliamentarians like himself.

“I have not said this for attention. I’m not making noise. I’ve raised a legitimate concern, and it’s up to National Security to tell us whether there’s cocaine on that aircraft or not,” he stated.

When the host suggested he collaborate with Minority MPs to provide supporting evidence, Fordjour dismissed the idea.

“I’m not the investigative body here. I don’t have the authority or the resources to track aircraft or run drug tests. That responsibility belongs to our National Security apparatus,” he said.

He also underscored the media’s crucial role in a democratic society, urging journalists not to wait passively for politicians to uncover the truth.

“You are the fourth estate. The media has power. When I raise something, you dig further. That’s your job,” Fordjour emphasized.

According to the MP, his comments have already piqued public interest, with several radio stations launching their own investigations into the matter.

He further cited Parliament’s current recess as a limitation to pushing the issue from a legislative standpoint.

“Parliament is currently on break. There’s no opportunity for me to summon the Minister or demand answers on the floor. So right now, we all need to do our part—media included,” he added.

While the alleged cocaine shipment on the aircraft has yet to be officially confirmed or denied, Fordjour’s bold statements have stirred public debate and increased pressure on the relevant authorities to provide clarity.

The Ghana Police Service has launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the tragic death of General Constable John Kwabena Dogbetey.

The incident occurred on April 3, 2025, at Assin Dansame in the Central Region.

According to preliminary findings, Constable Dogbetey was part of an Anti-Galamsey Taskforce deployed to the area under the Assin Foso Police Division.

Reports indicate that while he was dismantling a chamfan machine used for illegal mining activities, a sudden gunshot rang out, fatally wounding him.

A police statement confirmed that his colleagues rushed him to the St. Francis Xavier Hospital in Assin Foso, where he was later pronounced dead.

“The necessary police procedures have since been initiated, and investigations are underway to determine the exact cause of his death,” the statement read.

Authorities have assured the public and the bereaved family that they are committed to uncovering the truth.

“The Police Administration is in touch with the deceased’s family to provide the needed support during this difficult time,” said ASPINA Francis O. Onyina, Public Affairs Director for the Central North Region.

In a move to preserve evidence and ensure a thorough investigation, the police have taken custody of the firearm that discharged the fatal shot.

“Meanwhile, the task force was able to dismantle other machines, take custody of three excavators, and seize other mining equipment,” the police noted.

ECG’s monthly revenue now rivals MTN

0

Former MD of ECG, Samuel Dubik Mahama Former MD of ECG, Samuel Dubik Mahama

Former Managing Director of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), Samuel Dubik Mahama, has emphasized the company’s notable strides in revenue generation and operational efficiency during his tenure.

Speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show, Mahama highlighted ECG’s financial transformation, comparing the company’s current monthly revenue to that of major corporations in Ghana.

“Let’s not treat ECG like a cottage industry when it’s actually one of the biggest,” he said. “ECG’s monthly revenue can be likened to—what do you call it—MTN now.

The Minister, in his own interview, said ECG is making 1.5 billion cedis a month. When I came into office, it was around 450 to 500 million. In longer months, maybe 700 million. But as we speak, revenue has tripled to 1.5 billion. How did we do it? We changed how we worked.”

Mahama also elaborated on the company’s pricing strategy, explaining that ECG operates under a strict engineering pricing model.

“ECG works with something called engineering pricing. So our pricing is unique. ECG has a set price for set goods. Whether you like it or not, that’s the price—take it or leave it. You can’t negotiate the price.”

Discussing the structural inefficiencies he inherited, Mahama revealed that there was a significant backlog of projects requiring critical equipment.

“I came to see 722 projects that predated me, all needing critical equipment, along with 98 civil infrastructure projects and 12 customer service-related projects. This showed me that the company wasn’t operating as a commercial entity, but rather as an engineering-focused one.”

On improving service delivery, Mahama noted the dramatic increase in electricity meter installations under his leadership.

“When I got to ECG, the data showed meter installations were at about 2,500 per month. Under the loss reduction project, by the time I was leaving, ECG had the capacity to install up to 100,000 meters a month.”

‘Illegal miners are ‘terrorists’- Lands Minister vows crackdown

Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah

The Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, has described illegal miners, popularly known as galamsey operators, as terrorists.

The minister has vowed to eradicate the menace by launching a crackdown on the illicit activities of these miners, which are destroying water bodies and farmlands.

He reaffirmed the government’s stance, warning that those involved—along with their political collaborators—will face severe consequences.

“This government is committed to fighting this galamsey menace,” he declared while addressing the media in Accra. His comments underscore a zero-tolerance approach to illegal mining, which has long been blamed for environmental degradation and the pollution of water bodies.

He cautioned individuals against interfering with law enforcement efforts, making it clear that attempts to influence the release of seized equipment or arrested persons would not be tolerated. “Any attempt to make calls for the release of an excavator or a person arrested for galamsey will not be countenanced; they will not succeed,” he warned.

Expressing deep concern over the devastating impact of illegal mining, Mr. Buah did not mince words in describing those involved. “They are terrorists; they are killing us, and we cannot allow this to continue,” he stated, emphasizing the government’s determination to protect the nation’s natural resources.

To expedite legal action against offenders, he revealed that the government has engaged with the Office of the Attorney-General to establish special courts dedicated to prosecuting illegal miners. “We have also had engagements with the Office of the Attorney-General on the need to set up special courts to fast-track cases involving illegal miners. Currently, the Attorney-General is taking steps to constitute dedicated courts for that purpose,” he added.

As part of its latest enforcement efforts, security operations have resulted in the arrest of 76 illegal miners within forest reserves, along with the confiscation of 100 excavators, three bulldozers, and other mining equipment. To prevent any mishandling of seized machinery, the government has introduced a tracking system. “We have developed serial coding for all the seized excavators to ensure that none of them get lost,” Mr. Buah disclosed.

Looking ahead, he signaled the government’s readiness to explore additional measures to curb illegal mining, including a possible state of emergency and a temporary ban on small-scale mining. “The fight against illegal mining is a national priority, and sustained collaboration is essential to ensure lasting success,” he stressed.

Ghana is set to host the President of the Czech Republic, His Excellency Petr Pavel, for a three-day state visit from April 8 to 10, 2025.

This visit marks a historic moment, as it will be the first by a Czech leader since diplomatic ties were first established between Ghana and then-Czechoslovakia in October 1959.

A statement issued by the Presidency’s Communications Office confirmed that President John Dramani Mahama will receive the Czech leader, making this the first official state visit under his leadership since his return to office in January 2025.

During his stay in Ghana, President Pavel will engage in high-level discussions with President Mahama, focusing on strengthening bilateral relations between the two nations.

The Czech leader is also scheduled to address a business forum, inaugurate a Czech-funded health facility, and visit historic sites including Osu Castle and the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park.

Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Spokesperson to the President and Minister for Government Communications, emphasized the importance of the visit, stating, “President Mahama will host a state dinner in honour of the visiting Head of State.”

The visit is expected to reinforce economic and diplomatic ties, opening new avenues for collaboration between Ghana and the Czech Republic.

Ghana journalist awarded $18m after suing ex-MP

0

A US court awarded Ghanaian investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas $18m (£14m) in damages, after a jury said he was defamed by former Ghanaian MP Kennedy Agyapong.

The case stems from comments Agyapong made about Anas after his BBC investigation in 2018 that exposed football corruption in Ghana and elsewhere.

The court heard that Agyapong, among other accusations made on a podcast, had called the reporter a “criminal” and alleged he was behind the murder of fellow journalist Ahmed Suale.

Anas lost a similar legal action in Ghana seven years ago. But after the release of the podcast episode in 2021 Anas went to court in the US state of New Jersey where Agyapong has a property.

The politician was in New Jersey when he was interviewed for the Daddy Fred Show podcast, according to court papers filed by his lawyers.

Last week’s initial verdict was confirmed on Tuesday. The $18m in damages was the result of a unanimous decision by an eight-member jury in Essex County Superior Court in New Jersey, finding Agyapong liable for defamation.

The figure included $8m in punitive damages.

“Justice has prevailed. This victory is not just for me, but for truth, press freedom, and every journalist who risks everything to expose corruption and wrongdoing,” Anas said in response.

“No amount of intimidation or falsehood will silence the pursuit of accountability even in the face of assassination. Our work continues, undeterred and unafraid.”

The journalist, who has won multiple international awards for his reporting, has vowed to continue fighting corruption and holding wrongdoers accountable.

Agyapong’s lawyers had unsuccessfully argued that the case should not have been brought in the US in the first place. They also said that the comments made on the podcast were the kinds of things other courts had described as hyperbole and opinion and were not subject to a defamation case.

Meanwhile, police in Ghana have arrested a suspect in connection with the murder of Anas’ colleague, Ahmed Hussein Suale, who was killed in 2019.

The suspect allegedly shared pictures of the undercover journalist with a popular Ghanaian politician before his death.

The death of Ahmed was also linked to a football corruption exposé.

The investigation sought to expose corruption in African football and was reported by BBC Africa Eye.

NCCE urges Ghanaians to resolve misunderstanding through dialogue

0

Ghanaians, particularly the youth have been entreated to use dialogue rather than violence to resolve any form of misunderstanding between them and their neighbours.
That, according to the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) was to ensure such misunderstandings were settled amicably without threatening the peace and stability.
The Secretary to the Commission, Mrs Lucille Hewlett Annan who gave the advice at a post-election violence engagement organised NCCE for youth and women groups at Madina in the La Nkwantanang Madina Municipality of the Greater Accra Region Thursday, said Ghana had embraced democracy as the preferred option of governance, hence the need to uphold the tenets of democracy, including using the right channels to address grievances.
Mrs Annan expressed concern about post-election violence that had characterised the transfer of power from one political party to another, in recent times.
“After the successful 2024 elections, we realised that there are certain violence or activities that were carried on by some unknown people. People attacked the Electoral Commission offices while others vandalised ballot boxes ,” she said.
With the support of the European Union (EU), the engagement created awareness about the effects of violence, and illicit arms use and the need to ensure a peaceful and stable society.
The roles of youth in promoting post-election peace and stability; the consequences of post-election violence; post-election misinformation and disinformation and the vigilantism and related offences act were some of the topics treated at the event.
At least, five key state institutions, including the Ghana Gas Company, Passport Office, and Tema Harbour, according to reports, were attacked and vandalised after the December 7, 2024, general election.
Mrs Annan warned that such post-election violence could undermine the country’s democracy and erode the progress made over the past three decades.
According to her, using violence to resolve conflicts could only worsen the situation and disrupt the peace and security of the country, adding that it deepened divisions and hindered national cohesion.

Highlighting the role of youth in ending such acts to promote national cohesion, the NCCE Secretary charged them to be tolerant and united in their respective diverse communities.

Additionally, she urged them to foster mutual respect and shared national values.

“They should eschew all forms of violence, and if they have issues, their preferred choice is dialogue and reconciliation rather than violence and other things and destruction of public property,” she stated.

Hidden epidemics in Africa and power of serosurveillance

0

Serosurveys have expanded our understanding of infectious diseases in Africa, revealing the true burden of pathogens beyond reported outbreaks.

These studies have uncovered silent epidemics of otherwise never-reported pathogens of interest and provided additional insight into the burden of reported pathogens. This includes providing evidence of widespread dengue exposure among children and unexpected seroprevalence of Marburg virus disease.

Dr. Anthony Afum-Adjei Awuah has been at the forefront of these efforts, leveraging seroprevalence studies to bridge the gap between traditional outbreak responses and proactive pandemic preparedness.

A research team in Ghana set out on a routine public health study in early 2021. Their goal was simple: collect blood samples from healthy individuals from randomly selected households from the country’s northern, middle, and southern belts to test for COVID-19 antibodies.

The effort proved worthwhile. The research found 84.7% of people in Tamale, 43.9% in Kumasi, and 53.3% in Accra had been exposed to SARS-CoV-2, although the number of cases reported was extremely low. These findings countered global assumptions about the transmission of COVID-19 in Africa and helped shape Ghana’s national policy.

“For pandemic preparedness, seroprevalence surveys are invaluable,” says Dr. Anthony Afum-Adjei Awuah, Deputy Group Lead at Global Health and Infectious Diseases Research Group (GHID), Kumasi Centre for Collaborative Research in Tropical Medicine (KCCR), KNUST. “They give us a retrospective look at past exposures and provide an additional layer of support to the traditional surveillance system to improve pandemic preparedness.”

A brief history of seroprevalence studies

The beginnings of seroprevalence studies can be traced back to the early 20th century when scientists started drawing blood from patients to screen for antibodies, providing evidence of a prior infection. Once infected, a person’s immune system produces antibodies specific to the pathogen. Some of these antibodies can linger for years and can be used to determine if a person has been infected at any point with a pathogen, especially when it was undiagnosed. During World War II, they were used to track diseases like typhus and malaria in soldiers. In the 1980s, serosurveys played a crucial role in understanding the spread of HIV and some beneficial responses worldwide.

Over the years, seroprevalence studies have become important tools for mapping disease exposures, monitoring vaccine coverage, and identifying immunity gaps. Today, these surveys seek to expose hidden outbreaks and direct responses to avert future pandemics.

Beyond COVID-19

The Ghana work was only the beginning. Researchers quickly realized that serosurveys could uncover exposures not only to COVID-19 but also to a whole host of other infectious threats.

Under the SERODEN study, blood samples drawn from Ghana, Senegal, and the Democratic Republic of Congo showed widespread exposure to Dengue virus. In Ghana, it was found that 36% of children in Tamale had already been exposed by age nine, compared to 5% percent in Kumasi and 18% in Accra.

“This means that in some parts of Africa, there is an increased risk of dengue infection especially among children,” Dr. Afum-Adjei Awuah mentions. “Understanding this helps us put a public health intervention in place and plan for potential vaccine rollouts.”

The Marburg Virus mystery

The most unsettling finding came from the SeroMARV study, which aimed to track exposure to the Marburg virus, a deadly hemorrhagic fever virus related to Ebola.

These severe viral infections cause extensive internal bleeding, high fever, and massive organ damage by disrupting the body’s ability to regulate blood clotting and vascular integrity.

In July 2022, when Ghana faced its first-ever Marburg virus outbreak, three cases were confirmed in the Ashanti region, two of which were fatal. This impressed the need for proactive surveillance to detect and respond to emerging threats promptly.

Dr John Amuasi, Group lead for the GHID-KCCR and co-lead of The African coaLition for Epidemic Research, Response and Training (ALERRT), explained why there was a need to deploy the SeroMARV study.

“When the Ghana Health Service announced that there was a Marburg virus disease outbreak, the team sprang into action. Our inquiries with the support of the Ghana Health Service led us to believe the outbreak as we saw it might have been the tip of the iceberg.”

“We realized by deploying well-designed serosurveys, we could better appreciate what might have happened and its scale and therefore generate knowledge which would help Ghana be better prepared for future outbreaks,” he said.

The initial findings suggested that there were individuals in the areas where these outbreaks occurred who had been previously exposed to the Marburg virus but did not show typical symptoms associated with the disease.

“Serological assays are not perfect,” Dr. Afum-Adjei Awuah explains. “There is the need to address discordance with the immunological tools used to perform these serosurveys.”

The researchers estimated that Marburg virus seroprevalence in Ghana was around 0.6%, with one sample testing positive for Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever virus, a widespread zoonotic disease caused by a tick-borne virus (Nairovirus). The findings suggested that while undetected Marburg transmission might be occurring, cross-reactivity in antibody tests could also distort the picture.

This tells us two things,” Dr. Awuah says. “First, Marburg exposure might be broader than we think. Second, we need better diagnostic tools to confirm these findings.”

Strengthening disease surveillance

Seroprevalence studies wield the ability to identify hidden threats that can direct public health response before outbreaks occur.

“The advantage here is that if we look for antibodies against pathogens based on our understanding of immunology, we will better be able to tell if there has been any cause for worries,” Dr Afum-Adjei Awuah explains.

“Our work seeks to provide some understanding and guidance to identify transmission hotspots that otherwise our conventional surveillance system may miss.”

Researchers are trying to upscale activities through the SeroMarv Africa Plus Study, which will expand serosurveys to other African countries. In addition to determining the burden of past exposure to pathogens of interest, the study will also examine the role that genetics play in susceptibility to these infections.

Dr. Afum-Adjei Awuah believes that Africa must take charge of its disease surveillance. “If we truly want to prevent the next pandemic, we need to move from reactive to proactive strategies,” he says. “Seroprevalence studies give us that opportunity.”

A highly anticipated documentary is set to explore the complex life of Nigeria’s Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, with a particular focus on his relationships with women, his connection to popular Nigerian artist and entrepreneur McGalaxy, Nollywood actress Tana Adelana and Nigerian fashion designer popularly known as beunique. The film promises to offer an in-depth look at the personal dynamics surrounding one of Nigeria’s most prominent political figures and his relationships with women.

Godswill Akpabio: A Politician with a Polarizing Legacy

Senator Godswill Akpabio, former Governor of Akwa Ibom State and current Senate President of Nigeria, is a politician with a legacy that has garnered controversy. Akpabio has long been known for his role in the development of Akwa Ibom, his rise to national prominence, and his strong political influence. However, the upcoming documentary will take a different approach by focusing on the private aspects of his life, particularly his relationships with women and his social interactions with key figures in the entertainment world.

The documentary is set to delve into Akpabio’s personal life, including allegations and rumors regarding his romantic and social relationships. While these matters have remained mostly out of the public eye, whispers in the political and social spheres have linked him to various women, and the documentary will offer a closer examination of these associations. The portrayal of Akpabio as a multifaceted leader will challenge the typical narratives around politicians and their personal lives.

McGalaxy: The Pimp Connection

One of the more intriguing and controversial aspects of the documentary involves the relationship between Godswill Akpabio and the popular Nigerian musician and entrepreneur McGalaxy. McGalaxy, best known for his hit songs and presence on social media, is often described as a “pimp” within certain circles, and the documentary will explore this role in detail. It is alleged that McGalaxy has been involved in facilitating the social connections of several prominent individuals, including those with ties to Akpabio.

The documentary promises to reveal how McGalaxy has played a role in navigating the social and political landscapes, including acting as a middleman in introducing women to key political figures. His unique position within both the entertainment and political spheres has led to claims of him exerting influence over high-profile figures, and the documentary aims to pull back the curtain on these complex relationships and exposes a wide range of popular female celebrities in Nigeria that has been pimped to Akpabio through Mc galaxy.

Tana Adelana: Nollywood Actress, alleged pimp

The third key figure in the documentary is Nollywood actress Tana Adelana, who has made a name for herself with her acting prowess and social media presence. According to the documentary, Tana Adelana is linked to Godswill Akpabio, with reports suggesting that she has been part of the social circles frequented by the powerful men. Adelana’s role in the documentary is poised to raise questions about her involvement with high-profile individuals in Nigeria’s political and entertainment worlds. Adelana who has been rumored to be another major pimp of Akpabio for over a decade and has brought so many women in the industry to Akpabio for sexual favors in exchange for money.

As one of Nollywood’s rising stars, Adelana’s career and personal life have been subjects of media scrutiny, and this documentary is expected to offer new insights into her relationships with Akpabio. Whether romantic or professional, the connections between these figures are shrouded in secrecy, and the documentary aims to bring these previously hidden dynamics to light.

Exploring the Intersection of Politics and Entertainment

What sets this documentary apart from typical political exposés is its exploration of the intersection between Nigeria’s entertainment industry and its political landscape. As politics and entertainment continue to play crucial roles in shaping Nigerian society, figures like Akpabio, McGalaxy, and Adelana exemplify the blurred lines between these two powerful worlds.

The documentary will not only delve into personal relationships but also examine the broader societal implications of these connections. How do the powerful relationships between politicians, entertainers, and social influencers affect Nigeria’s political discourse? What do these dynamics say about the power structures within both spheres? These are some of the questions the documentary will address, offering viewers a behind-the-scenes look at the country’s most influential circles.

Controversy and Anticipation

Naturally, the documentary is generating significant buzz in both political and entertainment circles, with some supporters of Akpabio and other subjects expressing concern over its potential to damage reputations. Others, however, are excited for the insight it will provide into the often murky world of Nigerian politics and celebrity culture.

While it remains to be seen how Akpabio will respond to the documentary’s release, it is clear that this project will spark important conversations about power, influence, and the intersections of personal and public life in Nigeria.

The documentary is expected to premiere in the coming months, and whether it leaves audiences with more questions than answers or a deeper understanding of the intertwined worlds of politics and entertainment, one thing is certain: it will be a must-watch for anyone seeking to understand the intricate and often controversial relationships that shape modern Nigerian society.

Conclusion

As the documentary on Godswill Akpabio approaches its release, it is sure to provoke debate and challenge existing perceptions of Nigerian political and entertainment elites. With its promise to uncover previously hidden relationships and connections, the film offers an unprecedented opportunity to see how the powerful operate behind closed doors. Whether the documentary serves as a political exposé or simply as a look at the complex world of Nigerian public figures, it will undoubtedly capture the public’s attention.

Policy rate hike comes at a wrong time; government must be financially disciplined – IPPA

0

The Institute of Public Policy and Accountability (IPPA) believes the Bank of Ghana rushed in increasing its policy rate by 100 basis points to 28%.

According to the policy think tank, though inflation remains high, above 20%, it has declined for two consecutive months, and therefore, the Monetary Policy Committee of the Bank of Ghana could have observed the inflationary trend for some time before adjusting its policy rate upwards.

“The Institute of Public Policy and Accountability though recognises the above challenges the hike in the policy rate is coming at a wrong time. Inflation is still above 20% but has witnessed two consecutive declines (marginally). Therefore, the Committee could have observed the situation for some time before adjusting the policy rate up”.

“An increase in the policy rate is a disincentive to businesses and household consumers as they grapple with the high cost of operations and living. We therefore want the Bank of Ghana to take a second look at its inflation targeting framework. We think that the Bank cannot continue to depend solely on that policy to control money supply. Many questions have been asked regarding the efficacy of the inflation targeting framework purely because the current drivers of inflation are supply-side and not demand-side”, it said in a statement.

There was a split decision by the 5-member MPC over the policy rate, with three proposing an increase while the remaining two dissented.

IPPA said the high policy rate is a disincentive to businesses as many grapple with high borrowing and operational costs.

It also questioned the government’s appetite for borrowing and poor fiscal management, urging the Bank of Ghana not to lend to the government and criticise the government if necessary.

“A disciplined government is important in keeping the macroeconomic fundamentals (lower interest rates, lower inflation, reduced borrowing, stable exchange rate) stronger and opening the economy for growth. Inconsistency in fiscal prudence has been our bane over the years. We, therefore, urged the Bank of Ghana not to shy away from criticising the government or pulling the plug anytime it foresees the government exhibiting poor fiscal management”.

“It [Bank of Ghana] should not succumb to executive pressure by lending to the government or printing monies. We also want the government to be disciplined by not borrowing excessively or spending beyond its means. Again, borrowed funds should be invested in productive sectors of the economy”, it added.

Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor (L) and Alexander Afenyo-Markin (R) Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor (L) and Alexander Afenyo-Markin (R)

The Majority Chief Whip and Member of Parliament for South Dayi, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, has asked the Minority Leader, Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin, to use his time during the current parliamentary recess to adjust his leadership style.

“I hope that the parliamentary recess will provide Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin with an opportunity to reflect on his leadership style and make necessary adjustments,” he stated.

According to ChannelOne TV on X, Dafeamekpor raised concerns about Afenyo-Markin’s approach to handling parliamentary matters and interactions with colleagues.

“We believe that this recess will offer him the opportunity to review his performance between January and the end of March and see whether there will be opportunities for him to mend the way he handles matters on the floor and also amend the way he conducts affairs among his people and between his people and us,” Dafeamekpor stated.

However, he noted that there are recurring issues with his leadership style since he was once a Majority Leader.

“You recall how, as Majority Leader, he was always holding press conferences even though he was in government. He will take matters to court and will dramatise, and with the slightest matter on the floor, they will walk out sometimes on their own business,” he indicated.

Dafeamekpor also expressed optimism that the recess would allow Afenyo-Markin to reassess his approach and foster better collaboration within Parliament.
