Ghanaian musician cum boxer, Bukom Banku, has disclosed that he did not fast during Ramadan.

In an interview on Max TV, Banku explained that his decision was not due to any health condition but simply because he could not go without food.

Ramadan is a significant period in the Islamic faith, marked by fasting from dawn to sunset, prayer, and spiritual reflection.

It is believed to be the time when the Quran was first revealed to the Prophet Muhammad.

While fasting is a fundamental obligation for Muslims, certain exemptions exist for those who genuinely cannot fulfill this religious duty.

However, the retired Ghanaian boxer clarified that his decision was simply a personal choice.

He stated that he often gave money to people who fast on his behalf and pray for him.

According to him, this act is permissible within Islamic teachings, and he believes it allowed him to participate in the spirit of Ramadan in his own way.

He further noted that his community members are fully aware of his stance on fasting and have come to accept it over the years.

“This year’s fasting was successful. Those who embarked on it really did it well. I am a Muslim, but I have told Ghanaians that I cannot fast. So, I gave people money to fast on my behalf.

“When I wake up in the morning and I have not eaten, I don’t like it. It gives me stomach issues. I know myself better than anyone else.”

Despite not fasting, he expressed his commitment to the values of Ramadan by supporting others who observed the fast.

Shedding more light on his eating habits, Bukom Banku said, “I eat early in the morning, afternoon, evening, and later at night.”

‘Ghana’s future is in your hands’ – President Mahama to Muslim youth

President John Dramani Mahama President John Dramani Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has urged Muslim youth to take charge of their future by equipping themselves with knowledge, skills, and discipline to thrive in the digital age.

He emphasised that Ghana’s progress depends on how well young people prepare for both challenges and opportunities.

Speaking during special congregational prayers to mark the Eid-ul-Fitr celebration at the Black Star Square in Accra on Monday, March 31, 2025, he stated that education and hard work are essential tools for a brighter future.

“In this era of digital transformation, economic challenges, and global competition, our youth must equip themselves with the knowledge, skills, and discipline necessary to thrive. They are the ones who will shape the country’s destiny. Allow your faith to guide you, but also let your education and hard work serve as the tools that empower you to build a brighter future.

“I want to encourage our Muslim youth to embrace this fully. Education is our opportunity for social mobility. Islam itself teaches us that seeking knowledge is a lifelong duty for every Muslim. The future of Ghana hinges on our ability to equip young people with the right skills and mindset to thrive in a constantly changing world,” he added.

President Mahama further urged Muslims to continue acts of kindness beyond Ramadan.

“As we celebrate Eid, let us not forget our brothers and sisters who are less fortunate and struggling, such as orphans, widows, the unemployed, and the elderly. Indeed, when we leave here after Salah, everyone should look for an orphan, a widow, or an elderly person and show them an act of kindness. That is what Ramadan is about.

“Let us carry forward the acts of kindness that Ramadan has inspired and let us reach out to those in greatest need. This is not only an Islamic duty but also a national responsibility, because a nation that cares for its vulnerable will always be blessed by Allah. To our young people, I say: Ghana’s future is in your hands,” he concluded.

Following his coaching exploits, the Ghana Football Association appointed Addo to oversee the Black Stars’ qualification for the 2022 World Cup.

He successfully guided Ghana past Nigeria in the playoffs and led the team to the tournament.

He became the second Ghanaian coach to lead the Black Stars to the World Cup, following Kwesi Appiah in 2014.

However, after Ghana’s exit from the tournament, Addo stepped down but was later reappointed following the Black Stars’ disappointing performance at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

In the March international window, Addo guided the Black Stars to back-to-back victories against Chad and Madagascar in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, positioning Ghana as group leaders with a strong chance of securing a spot in the tournament.

Goldbod monopoly won’t create conflict of interest – Sammy Gyamfi

0

The Acting Managing Director of the Precious Minerals Marketing Company (PMMC), Sammy Gyamfi, has dismissed concerns that GoldBod’s dual role in trading and regulatory oversight could lead to conflicts of interest.

In a post on X, Gyamfi clarified that GoldBod is neither a regulator nor a competitor in the gold trade but a monopoly responsible for the trading and export of gold.

“The GoldBod is simply a monopoly in the trading and export of gold… The regulatory function of the GoldBod relates only to its own licensed agents and not to competitors,” he stated.

He further emphasized that GoldBod’s regulatory authority is limited to ensuring compliance among its licensed service providers, not external traders. “For emphasis, the GoldBod will not be regulating competitors but rather its own licensed agents. Thus, the issue of conflict of interest does not arise at all,” he added.

On the issue of gold hoarding, Gyamfi stressed that it is a criminal offense under Clause 68(1) of the GoldBod Bill. He explained that this provision is aimed at preventing licensed agents from stockpiling gold to manipulate prices, create artificial scarcity, or engage in unfair competition.

His comments follow the passage of the Ghana Gold Board Bill 2025 into law on Friday, March 28, 2025. The newly established Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) has been tasked with overseeing, monitoring, and managing the buying, selling, and export of gold and other precious minerals.

Under this law, GoldBod has been designated as the sole exporter of gold from Ghana’s small-scale mining sector, effectively barring licensed traders and bullion dealers from making direct gold exports.

The establishment of GoldBod is part of President John Dramani Mahama’s economic revitalization efforts and operates under the supervision of the Ministry of Finance.

Encroachers on Ramsar sites will be punished – Mahama

0

President John Dramani Mahama has vowed to take decisive action against individuals and entities that have illegally constructed buildings in unauthorised areas, including wetlands, waterways, and Ramsar sites.

Speaking at the 2025 National Eid-ul-Fitr celebration at Black Star Square, President Mahama underscored the urgent need to address the growing problem of land encroachment, which has contributed to persistent flooding and environmental degradation across Ghana.

In a firm declaration, President Mahama warned that all unauthorised structures obstructing waterways would be demolished without exception.

He expressed concern over the reckless disregard for urban planning regulations, which he said had worsened the annual flooding crisis in many parts of Ghana.

The President particularly called out individuals who collude with traditional leaders to illegally acquire and develop protected lands, such as Ramsar sites.

“I must address a deeply troubling issue. The illegal construction of buildings in waterways causing flooding and extensive destructions of property. As we know, the rains are about to start and already, we are seeing flooding because people have built and blocked the rivers and so they have nowhere to go but to backup

“This reckless disregard for planning regulations and environmental safety is a major contributor to the devastating floods that continue to plague our communities. I am aware of instances where private individuals collude with some chiefs to convert Ramsar sites into built up zones. Let me be clear, this must stop.

“Those structures will be pulled down and we will not allow a few selfish individuals to endanger the lives and livelihoods of countless others. The law will be enforced, and those who flout it will face the consequences.”
