Amidst the global economic uncertainties worsened by US tariffs, gold prices have surged, reaching record highs of $3,000 per ounce in March 2025 as reported by the Financial Times. The rise in gold prices is driven by investors seeking safe-haven assets in times of uncertainty.
Serwa Atiase Dzogbenuku said the increased demand for gold has the potential to boost Ghana’s external revenue, supporting the country’s foreign exchange and contributing to the stabilisation of the Ghana Cedi.
On supply chain alignment, she pointed out that Ghana, with its political stability, improving infrastructure, and expanding industrial base, can position itself as a preferred supplier of goods like cocoa derivatives, cashew nuts, and gold.
According to her, this window allows Ghana to capture new market share and strengthen long-term trade relationships.
She also indicated that the tariff-induced trade shifts present a unique chance to reorient Ghana’s economy from raw material exports to value-added production.
“By attracting investment into processing industries (especially cocoa, palm oil, and rubber), Ghana can build an export-driven manufacturing base to take advantage of the rising global demand for ethically sourced and sustainable products”, she mentioned.
Navigating the Challenges
Serwa said the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) serves as a strategic tool for Ghana to trade more easily with other African countries, to strengthen local value chains, and reduce the country’s reliance on distant markets like the US.
She also urged the government to invest more in agro-processing, manufacturing, and small industries to reduce dependence on finished goods imports.
She cited an example of a government initiative, the One District One Factory (1D1F) initiative implemented by the previous government to boost industrialisation in the country.

Former New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful, Kennedy Agyapong, has reportedly donated an amount of GH¢1 million to the party.
This is according to a report by Accra-based Starr 103.5 FM.
A post shared by the media house on X, on Friday, April 25, 2025, indicated that the donation was to aid the party to pay the arrears it is owing its workers.
The post, which featured a flyer with a picture of Ken Agyapong, a former Member of Parliament for Assin Central, was captioned: “Kennedy Agyapong donates 1 million cedis to NPP to pay arrears owed workers.”
Unconfirmed reports have indicated that workers of the NPP, the largest opposition political party in Ghana, are owed several months’ salaries.
Workers of the NPP at its national headquarters have reportedly not been paid for several months following the party’s loss in the 2024 presidential and parliamentary elections.

Vice President of policy think tank IMANI Africa, Bright Simons, has raised red flags over Ghana’s potential early exit from its International Monetary Fund (IMF) program, warning that critical economic targets may become “irrelevant” by 2028 without the Fund’s oversight.
Speaking in an interview on Joy News’ PM Express Business Edition on April 25, 2025, Simons criticised what he called the government’s “political optics over substance” approach, arguing that abandoning the IMF program prematurely risks derailing essential fiscal reforms.
Simons painted a stark picture of what an early exit could mean, stating, “The IMF will do a victory lap dance. The government will join them. And then we will conclude by 2028 that we have not met those targets.”
He stressed that while benchmarks like debt-to-GDP ratios (55% by 2028) remain crucial, Ghana’s tendency to treat IMF programs as mere financial transactions rather than structural reform opportunities undermines long-term stability.
“The targets are still relevant, but I think by that time, the targets will not be relevant. They will not be relevant anymore,” he said.
Simons further accused both the IMF and Ghanaian authorities of favoring positive messaging over measurable progress.
“The IMF itself admits the ‘signaling isn’t pretty,’ yet they’ve elevated optics above facts. The government will exploit this,” he pointed out.
He contrasted Ghana’s stance with that of peer nations, including Kenya, which exited its IMF program early but secured $1.5 billion from Gulf investors, and Nigeria, which avoided an IMF program altogether despite economic turbulence.
“If the IMF really wanted us to reach those targets, it should have encouraged the government when they said they wanted to extend,” he argued.
“That was the only way, from 2026 to 2028, that there could have been program levers to deliver those targets,” he added.
According to him, Ghana’s early exit is more about political expediency than economic prudence.
“This debate isn’t about staying or leaving the IMF; it’s about whether Ghana is serious about reform or just crafting a good story for investors,” he said.

The suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonoo by President John Dramani Mahama barely five months after the change in government was expected, a member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) communications team, Mohammed Awal, has said.
In an interview with Joy Prime’s Roselyn Felli, Awal accused the National Democratic Congress (NDC) of diverting the attention of Ghanaians away from pressing issues by targeting the Chief Justice.
President Mahama asked the foremost judicial official to step aside following the establishment of a five-member committee to investigate three petitions filed against her. Myjoyonline.com understands two additional petitions have since been filed to get the Chief Justice out of office.
The presidency, which announced the suspension on Tuesday, said the action was in compliance with constitutional provisions and follows consultations with the Council of State.
The president cited Article 146(6) of the Constitution, which mandates the establishment of a committee to probe allegations against a superior court judge if a prima facie case is established.
According to the statement, President Mahama determined that sufficient grounds exist to warrant further inquiry.
However, the NPP communicator has jumped to the defence of the Chief Justice.
“I’m not surprised, even though I suspect that the NDC government is doing this to take our attention away from the existing issues we have in this country. Fourteen per cent electricity tariffs, ‘dumsor’ and fitting issues of galamsey and so on,” he complained.
Awal emphasised that the NDC’s history with judicial matters has been poor since the PNDC days. He cited the killing of three judges under the PNDC administration as an example.
“They were murdered in this country. Justice Sarkodie, Justice Agyie Agyapong, and a nursing mother who was also killed, all under the PNDC,” he recalled.
Mohammad Awal further condemned President Mahama over what he said was a violation of due process.
“We all know that indeed this process would have happened, but we were thinking that due process would be followed so that when the person is removed, we know that due process was followed.”
Reviewing the entire process, Mr. Awal was of the firm belief that the suspension was politically motivated because the president proceeded despite an injunction application at the Supreme Court.
Addressing the petition, Mr. Awal said, “Yes, it can even be fifty. There is nothing wrong with that. The most important thing is that there must be prima facie, there must be some amount of guilt in it, before you can even suspend the person. You can still petition hundreds, and if the person is innocent, the person will go unscathed”.

Big Confusion as Politician’s Husband is Arrested
Something strange and upsetting has happened in Ghana. The husband of a well-known politician has been taken into custody by the government’s security team. Former Member of Parliament for Subin, Eugene Boakye Antwi, has urged the New Patriotic Party (NPP), to explore the findings of the party’s committee reports to swiftly resolve issues that led to the party’s debacle in the 2024 Election because Ghanaians are closely watching to ascertain if they have changed.
He cited what he termed as soft governance issues, as one of the reasons behind the poor performance of the party in the last general elections.
Speaking to the party’s efforts to regroup and revitalise grassroot supporters, on Nhyira FM, on April 24, 2025, he cautioned the NPP to demonstrate the right attitude and present reforms that will convince Ghanaians that they have changed.
“Apart from the findings that Ghanaian youth did not vote for the party in the 2024 Election, soft governance issues such as a former Chief Justice picketing with other pensioners, galamsey menace, police recruitment, corruption, among other things, caused the party’s defeat,” he said.
He advised the leadership to make use of the Prof Mike Oquaye report and other committee reports conducted by the party to formulate a cogent strategy for the next election in 2028.
“Ghanaians are watching if we have changed and that is what will inform who will be chosen to lead the party.
“Remember that the message is as good as the messenger. Ghanaians are looking for responsible leadership in the party. They live with us in our communities and see our deeds. So, let’s be mindful of our engagements even in our communities,” he said.
On another score, he lauded the General Secretary of the NPP, Justin Kodua Frimpong, for apologising to Ghanaians at the launch of the nationwide tour, dubbed the “Thank You Tour”.
“I am happy that the General Secretary apologised to electorates and assured that they will right the wrongs that led to the unfortunate turn of events,” he said.

Some Ghanaians have expressed their frustrations over persistent issues of poor call quality and network disruptions from telecommunication service providers in the country.
This follows recurring instances of network jamming during calls, with some cases where the network completely goes off, leaving users with no service and leaving them facing difficulties in making calls.
Speaking exclusively with GhanaWeb on April 24, 2025, several individuals stated that the unreliable networks disrupt their daily activities and significantly hinder the smooth operation of their businesses.
One of the interviewees, a commercial driver, shared his experience, stating that his network service occasionally goes off completely without any signal.
He added that the service only returns after he switches off his phone, removes the SIM card, and reinserts it.
“It is disturbing us because sometimes I want to make an emergency call but the network signal just goes off. Sometimes, you need to switch it off and back on before you can make a call which is disturbing,” he said.
Another individual echoed similar concerns about how the poor call network negatively impacts his business.
He explained that on several occasions, when attempting to make a call, he receives a notification that the recipient’s phone is off, even though the phone is actually on, expressing deep frustration over the situation.
“We use the network services for business transactions, so if I’m calling my client or supplier and the person is active but I’m not able to reach them, it actually affects business. They need to work on it because it’s bad. You could be calling someone nearby, but the response will say they cannot be reached or are unavailable,” he complained.
In light of this, they are calling on the government, particularly the Minister of Communications, Samuel Nartey George, to address the ongoing challenges with poor network connectivity and call quality.
“… All I want is for the government to help solve the network issues we are facing,” one of the interviewees said.
Meanwhile, speaking on the development exclusively with GhanaWeb’s Mandy Agyemang, the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Chamber of Telecommunications, Dr Kenneth Ashigbey, acknowledged the existence of such challenges.
According to him, the Ministry of Communications is expected to roll out additional spectrum to telecommunication networks which will significantly enhance and improve the quality of network services and calls.
“… MTN and Telecel have a challenge with spectrum. The minister has given authorisation for MTN to be given some particular spectrum. He says Telecel are also to be given the spectrum, so, it is after that and when the spectrum has been deployed, that’s then we will begin to see some improvement in the quality of service,” he said.
Dr Ashigbey also highlighted some of the factors contributing to the poor quality of service, specifically citing the issue of fibre cuts, which occur when there is a break in an optical fibre.
He noted that efforts are currently underway to enhance the protection of fibre infrastructure and prevent such incidents, which often lead to network disruptions.
“Then also you have the challenges with fibre cuts and all of that has been happening and so those also result in the quality of service issues. I’m sure once we get all the spectrum issues dealt with, then we’ll begin to start seeing an improvement. There’s some work also going on to ensure that we can protect the fibre and all of that,” he said.
He indicated plans by the telecommunications chamber to collaboratively work with the communications and roads ministries, respectively, to implement legislative instruments that would make fibre cuts punishable, serving as a deterrent to potential offenders.
“We’re going to be working with the minister to put in place some legislative instruments to make it a bit more punitive so that those who cut the fibre, we can hold them responsible. I have had some engagement with the Minister of Roads as well who is also going to support in that particular direction. In May, there’s going to be a launch of a document. There is a standard specification that has been done for those who do the fibre, so, that those who also leave will do it according to a particular way of doing it.
“It’s a collective effort for all of us, including the media, the need to support in letting people realise the fact that the quality of service we get from telecommunications services is also based on the way we protect the telecommunication infrastructure,” he added.

The Founder of the All People’s Congress (APC), Hassan Ayariga, has called out financial institutions in Ghana for sidelining local entrepreneurs in favour of foreign companies.
He argued that the country’s economic development strategy fails to empower Ghanaian businesses.

“The problem is that we are not building individuals. We are building foreign companies that benefit more than local businessmen. I think the banks should open their wings, open up, and allow young Ghanaian businessmen to thrive,” he said on BizTech.
He added that; “The justification by banks that small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and young entrepreneurs often lack the necessary documentation is just an excuse to deny them loan facilities and support.”
“It is not because SMEs lack the requisite documentation to access loans. It is just an excuse by the banks to deny them loan facilities and support,” Ayariga emphasised.
His comments contribute to growing calls for a financial ecosystem that is more inclusive of local businesses and better aligned with Ghana’s development goals.

Eugene Boakye Antwi is a former NPP MP for Subin
Former New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament (MP) for Subin, Eugene Boakye Antwi, has confirmed that he will contest the General Secretary position of the party.
Speaking in an interview on UTV on Friday, April 25, 2025, Boakye Antwi stated that he would submit his nomination form when the party opens nominations for its national executive elections.
“God willing, if the party opens nominations, I will run for the General Secretary position,” he said in Twi.
The former Subin legislator asserted that he is the right man for the job because he plans to modernise the party.
“I am interested in the NPP General Secretary position now because I won’t just manage it, but I will modernize it for the future,” he said.
He indicated that the NPP must put its house in order to stand a chance of winning the 2028 general elections.
Boakye Antwi also mentioned that many NPP faithful have called for a ‘one-man, one-vote’ system in the party’s internal elections, from the selection of polling station executives to the presidential primaries, rather than the current delegate system.

Agriculture Minister Hussein Mohamed Bashe
Finance Minister Dr Mwigulu Lameck Nchemba has urged African countries to embrace strategic intra-continental investment and trade as a means to navigate the shifting tides of global economic policies.
Speaking in Washington D.C., United States, during the Spring Meetings of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for the Africa Group I Constituency, Finance Minister Dr Nchemba made the case for a united African economic front. He was contributing to the Annual Report on the IMF’s implementation agenda.
Dr Nchemba highlighted that the emerging wave of protectionist policies — including heightened tariffs and trade barriers imposed by major global economies — should serve as a catalyst for African countries to reinforce economic resilience through internal collaboration and trade.
He noted that instead of positioning themselves as rivals, African nations must become economic allies. Failure to do so, he warned, could jeopardise the long-term economic prospects of the continent.
The Minister called for deliberate investment in critical sectors such as infrastructure and local manufacturing — especially pharmaceutical industries — which would not only expand employment opportunities but also strengthen domestic economies.
He further expressed concern over the shrinking availability of international financing, driven by rising interest rates in advanced economies and a retreat from aid and concessional lending.
This trend, he said, has tightened fiscal space across many African countries, impeding development progress.
As a result, Dr Nchemba explained, macroeconomic instability has deepened, institutional capacity has weakened, and access to affordable and market-based financing has become increasingly constrained, thereby hampering the realisation of development goals.
Chairing the session, Central Bank of Botswana Governor Cornelius Dekop echoed Dr Nchemba’s sentiments. He emphasised that African countries must intensify local processing of goods and enhance trade cooperation within the continent, rather than over-relying on external markets.
Mr Dekop reiterated that the prevailing global trade challenges present an opportunity for Africa to harness its internal markets and vast investment potential, shifting from dependency to self-driven development.
The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has announced that the government is actively working to extend the student loan scheme to include students in private tertiary institutions.
He believes this move will bring significant relief to many students who struggle financially to access higher education.
Speaking at the inauguration of the new Board for the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) in Accra on April 25, Haruna Iddrisu stated, “Government is considering expanding the student loan scheme to all deserving students in the country, whether in public or private institutions.”

Ayisha Modi’s recent attack on Shatta Wale was when the dancehall musician purchased a Rolls-Royce in the early part of 2025.
The socialite and music investor alleged that Shatta Wale’s recently acquired Rolls-Royce, which he constantly flaunts on social media, belongs to someone else.
According to her, even though the “Ayoo” hitmaker has the car parked in his house, the car’s papers are kept in another person’s house.
Obrafour
Obrafour is also on the list of musicians Ayisha Modi has had a feud with in the entertainment industry.
One might recall that in November 2020, Ayisha Modi vowed to fight the musician till her last drop of blood.
She called Obrafour an ingrate after the musician demanded that she retract and apologise for claiming she once invested close to $45,000 in his “Kasiebo” project.
“If I have to die for the truth, then I will. I have sacrificed myself for others to survive. I can even die for my friends. So, if I could do that for others, how much more for myself? The GH¢800,000 you sued me for is too small, make it GH¢3 billion. I’m ready to fight you till the end. Let’s meet in court,” she said.
Sarkodie
In 2020, Ayisha Modi directed a series of attacks at Sarkodie, following a scuffle that ensued between Stonebwoy and the rapper’s manager, Angeltown.
According to Modi, Sarkodie had organised a press conference to tarnish Stonebwoy’s image and also reported the musician to the police for physical assault.
She added that she could not fathom why Sarkodie would suggest that Stonebwoy was at fault.
Okyeame Kwame
The socialite, in a recent social media video, has also alleged that the wife of renowned musician, Okyeame Kwame, once borrowed $3,500 from her in 2008.
She included that the musician and his wife have failed to repay her money despite she constantly asking them for it.
“I woke up around 3 am one time to see messages from the wife of Okyeame Kwame. I became scared because all the message was titled emergency. I called her and she told me that they needed my help. This happened in 2008. I told her I wouldn’t be able to send her the $3,500, so I sent her $3,000.
“After sending her the money, she told me she would pay me back in a month, but she has refused to pay me the money despite several attempts. It got to a point where she claimed I dashed her the money voluntarily,” she claimed.
Blakk Cedi and Kelvynbwoy
Former Stonebwoy manager, Blakk Cedi, was attacked by Aisha Modi after his exit from the record label.
In 2019, Ayisha Modi made a live video to accuse the artiste manager of fraudulent behavior, as well as physically assaulting Stonebwoy.
In the same year, Ayisha Modi attacked Kelvynbwoy before his exit from Burniton Music Group.
She tagged the musician as an ungrateful artiste who was hiding behind Blakk Cedi to disrespect the BHIM Nation boss.

Acting Administrator of the Minerals Development Fund, Dr Hanna Louisa Bisiw
The Acting Administrator of the Minerals Development Fund, Dr Hanna Louisa Bisiw, has opened up about some of the supposed rots she has found at the fund since assuming office.
Speaking in an interview on Metro TV on April 24, 2025, Dr Bisiw said that she found that the fund, under the previous government, paid a whopping US$1.4 million as rent for its office space to one Kwabena Kufuor, who identified himself as a family relation of former President John Agyekum Kufuor.
She said that the amount paid to the owner of the property shows that it had been rented for US$10,000 per month, which was way above the market rate for such a small facility.
“This is a fund that actually paid US$1.4 million for rent of the office… It’s a cubicle, actually, and directors have their files on the floor. The one who rented it twice is called Kwabena Kufuor; he is President Kufuor’s nephew… He told me himself when they came begging me. And I thought it belonged to us. Even though it’s small, it’s something we could have worked on.
“They first paid rent for two years — that is, I think 2020 or 2021… They did for two years, they were paying US$10,000 a month,” she narrated.
She added; “Right now, when you check a prime area, better than where we are in that same environment, it is US$6,500 a month. So, it means that it was a rip-off.”
Dr Bisiw, who is also the National Women Organiser of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), said that upon resumption of office, she was informed that the fund had leased the property for another 12 years, which cost it about US$9,600 this time around.
She said that she was astonished by the development and made the decision not to use the office space.
“When I came, and they said now they subleased it for 12 more years, and they quoted it in dollars. The payment was in cedi, so you have to pay the dollar equivalent. Why did they quote it in dollars? Because if they say, let’s say $1 million, it means that if you are going to pay tomorrow, it has to be the cedi equivalent of that dollar.
“So, they paid them for 12 years, and when you calculate, it means that per month, it is $9,600 now, and they paid everything… $500,000 could have bought a land or a government property, and this was a government bungalow,” he said.
She added that she had taken the decision to use every legal means to take back the 12 years’ rent that had been supposedly paid to Kwabena Kufuor.
She also claimed that the self-acclaimed nephew of the former president came to her office and offered her money to stop her from looking into the payment of the rent.
“When I told them that I was not going to use this place, and I would use every means possible to take it, this Kwabena Kufuor came to my office and put money on my table, and I asked him what that money was for. He told me it was commission… I took the money and reported the money,” she said.
Dr Bisiw added that this Kwabena Kufuor told her that if she accepted his offer, he would confide in her on how workers of the company operated on the basis of commission.

NPP First National Vice Chairman, Dankwa Smith Butey
First National Vice Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Dankwa Smith Butey, popularly known as Chairman Butey, has criticized the national executives for blaming President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for the party’s failure in the 2024 elections.
According to him, if they were unable to rein in the former president when they knew his actions were damaging the party, then they have no right to blame him for the party’s humiliating defeat.
Chairman Butey asserted that the national executives must take responsibility for the party’s failure to “break the eight,” citing their ineffectiveness and incompetence in executing their duties.
“They claim Akufo-Addo made us lose, but as national executives, when he was taking the actions that led to our loss, what did you say to him?” he questioned.
He continued, “You were silent, and now that his actions have affected the party, you turn around and blame him? The executives must accept that they caused the NPP to lose the election.”
He emphasized that the party leadership should have taken control of affairs, as it was they who brought the party to power, and not left everything in Akufo-Addo’s hands, only to later fault him for the party’s defeat.
“We brought the party to power, so if the leader was going off track and we couldn’t rein him in, then what kind of leaders are we? Please, NPP members, vote against any National Executive who contests for any position,” he urged during an interview with Sompa FM.
Media personality, Abena Moet
Media personality and entertainment pundit Abena Moet has come to the defence of musicians accused of negatively influencing the youth through their lyrics.
This follows concerns raised by some veteran musicians and industry stakeholders that contemporary songs, especially those by younger artistes, often contain sexually suggestive lyrics and promote drug use.
The issue came up during a discussion on Neat FM on April 23, 2025, involving Abena Moet, musician Showboy, and media personality Ola Michael.
Ola Michael questioned Showboy about some of his lyrics, which appeared to promote smoking. In response, Showboy stated that his music is not targeted at children and therefore he should not be blamed if minors happen to listen to it.
Abena Moet, siding with Showboy, argued that parents, not musicians, should be held accountable for the content their children consume.
“It is up to you to raise your child. Showboy is not responsible for raising your child,” she stated.
“When I was a child, I didn’t know certain songs until I was older. There were restrictions in my home. I didn’t have access to certain content or even a smartphone until I grew up. So if your child is listening to Showboy, it’s your fault,” she added.

Dr. Ransford Anertey Abbey, CEO of Ghana COCOBOD
The Chief Executive of the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD), Dr Ransford Anertey Abbey, has affirmed that despite the numerous challenges facing the cocoa sector, COCOBOD remains committed to improving the living conditions of cocoa farmers across the country.
Speaking at a farmers’ rally held at Attronso in the Sefwi Bekwai District during his three-day maiden visit to the Western North Region, Dr Abbey disclosed that plans are underway to review the producer price of cocoa for the 2025/2026 season.
This, he noted, forms part of efforts to demonstrate the government’s commitment to enhancing the livelihoods of cocoa farmers and attracting a younger generation into the sector.
“Despite our financial constraints, the management of COCOBOD is committed to offering cocoa farmers a better price for their produce,” he emphasised.
Dr Abbey also expressed concern about the aging population of cocoa farmers, describing it as a threat to the long-term sustainability of the sector.
He stressed the importance of attracting youth into agriculture through modernisation and innovation.
“We are working closely with the Ministry of Agriculture to modernize cocoa farming. By introducing advanced tools and equipment, we aim to make the sector more lucrative and appealing to young people,” he said.
On the issue of climate change, he announced plans to prioritise the implementation of irrigation systems on cocoa farms to mitigate the impact of unpredictable rainfall patterns.
He urged farmers to join cooperatives, which would enable COCOBOD to roll out irrigation projects more effectively.
“We cannot implement irrigation systems for individual farmers, it’s costly, and access to water sources has been severely affected by illegal mining (galamsey). Cooperative farming is the way forward,” he explained.
Dr Abbey further revealed that efforts are underway to amend existing laws protecting cocoa trees in order to safeguard Ghana’s cocoa industry from environmental threats.
He noted that all relevant stakeholders are being consulted in this careful and inclusive process to establish a more robust legal framework for crop protection.
“Cocoa farming is a source of generational wealth. We need laws to protect cocoa trees and stop the destruction caused by galamsey operators,” he stated.
He also assured farmers of the timely supply of fertilizers and agrochemicals, urging all to support COCOBOD’s efforts to prevent the diversion of essential farming inputs.
“These inputs are procured through significant investment to ease the burden on farmers. I will personally ensure that any misconduct or diversion is addressed, and anyone found complicit will be held accountable,” he warned.
Dr Abbey concluded by calling on all stakeholders within the cocoa value chain to unite and support his administration in revitalising and sustaining the sector.
He was accompanied by members of COCOBOD’s management team during the tour.

Tension is mounting at Aboso, a farming community in the Fanteakwa North District of the Eastern Region, following reprisal attacks between local farmers and herdsmen.
Several homes belonging to the herdsmen have been torched by the local farmers, destroying other properties, including the killing of six cattle in the raid.
According to Citi News sources, the attack stems from the alleged rape of a Christian woman by a herdsman three months ago. Although the suspect was arrested and remains in police custody, local farmers—frustrated by what they perceive as delayed justice—have continued to launch attacks on herdsmen in the area.
The latest attack saw the shooting of a 10-year-old boy who is currently in a critical condition at the Begoro government hospital.
Barakisu Belko, a victim who confirmed the attack to Citi News, indicated that even though the local police have been engaging the herdsmen, they still continue to live in fear.
“The locals avenged the death of the Christian woman by burning the homes of the Fulanis and shooting their cattle, to the extent of shooting a young boy who is at the Begro hospital.
“The shootings occurred yesterday, Thursday, April 24, and we were able to call the police to visit the scene. The young boy is in a critical condition,” she narrated.

Major General Lawrence Kwaku Gbetanu, had visited Bawku on Wednesday and said personnel of the GAF and other security agencies remained steadfast in their commitment to restoring peace and security in Bawku in the Upper East Region.
“The GAF and other agencies have been managing the crisis over the years in Bawku, which has persisted between two contending sides and will continue to do so to bring lasting peace to the area for the benefit of the people,” he stressed.
Major General Gbetanu interacted with the media when he embarked on the official visit to Bawku last Wednesday, April 23, 2025, to interact with chiefs and military personnel deployed to maintain law and order.

Reports of attack
However, on Thursday evening, some reports suggested he had been attacked prompting the Ghana Armed Forces to react to the speculation in a press statement.
“GAF wishes to state that the contents of the said videos are false and should be treated with the contempt that they deserve. COAS’ operational visit to Bawku on Wednesday, 23 April 2025 was successful and no negative incident was recorded. Efforts are however underway to track the originators of the videos in question to face the law as appropriate,” the statement signed and issued by Brigadier General E. Aggrey Quashie, Director General Public Relations at the GAF said.

Efforts are however underway to track the originators of the videos in question to face the law as appropriate.
GAF once again wishes to caution bloggers, content creators and the media at large to be circumspect in their reportage on GAF operations especially in Bawku since any deliberate misinformation and disinformation of the populace have a potential to worsen the security situation in the area.

Together, he said the society aims to shape lives, strengthen families, and build a more just and compassionate community.
Archbishop Dr Agyinasare made the call in Accra yesterday during the 60th Anniversary mini launch of BSG adding that: “As we launch this anniversary celebration, I invite each one of you to recommit yourselves to the mission of the Bible Society of Ghana.
BSG is a bible society which thrives on the mission of making God’s word available, affordable and encourage its use for the transformation of lives.
Let us work together to ensure that the word of God remains at the centre of our lives and our communities. Together, we can build a stronger foundation for the next 60 years and beyond,” he said.
The anniversary celebration, he said was not just a celebration of years, but also a celebration of “lives transformed, communities uplifted, and the word of God” spread across the nation.
Archbishop Dr Agyinasare said over the decades, the society had played a pivotal role in making the scriptures accessible to all Ghanaians, regardless of their background or circumstances.
He added that their commitment had not only empowered countless individuals to encounter God, but had also been a beacon of hope and a source of strength for many, guiding them in their faith journeys.
Acknowledging the evolving nature of the world, he said there was the need for the BSG to adapt to new challenges and opportunities in sharing the good news, calling for a renewed commitment to making the Bible accessible to all adding the need to embrace new technologies, innovation, and meaningful dialogues to reach more souls especially the youth.
However, he emphasised the need to balance innovation with the preservation of hard copies, highlighting the importance of having physical Bible.
The BSG President expressed gratitude to all the past and present leaders, staff, and volunteers of the BSG and organisers of the event for their dedication and passion for God’s word and for making the launch a success.
The chairman of BSG, Right Reverend Dr Daniel S Torto, said beyond the translation distribution, the BSG had actively engaged in various outreach programmes touching lives through initiatives such as the Next Generation Mentorship Programmes, persons with visual disabilities, trauma healing and literacy programmes, and free Bible distribution.
These initiatives, he said demonstrated the society’s commitment to the spiritual, social, and personal growth of the Ghanaian.
The past chairperson of BSG Council, Mrs Efua Ghartey, giving a brief on the 60th anniversary said as part of the celebration, the Society would distribute 500,000 Bibles to Junior High Students to enhance their spiritual engagement and literacy, adding that “We will also make available Asante Twi Braille Bible to aid People with Visual Disability (PVDs), all aimed at revitalising our bible ministry.”
Looking to the future, she said the society was optimistic about the future, filled with hope and anticipation that the next chapter of their work will be greater and better with the glory of God.
In attendance among others were the present and past members and executives of the council, representatives from various Christian organisations.

Legal practitioner, Theophilus Dzimega Jnr, has emphasised that the position of Chief Justice demands an individual with high moral integrity.
In an interview with GH One TV and monitored by GhanaWeb on Friday, April 25, 2025, he explained that beyond academic and professional qualifications, the Chief Justice must possess an unquestionable character.
“The qualifications to be a Chief justice, you need to demonstrate that you have a high moral character. So, someone might petition or send a memo to say, this person is not a person of high moral character,” he noted.
The legal practitioner also noted that discussions around the possible removal of a Chief Justice might be handled more discreetly due to the sensitivity of the matters involved.
“When you’re going to go into committee work about the removal of a Chief Justice, there may be things like fraud, there may be concerns about his or her character or even family issues. And you don’t want all those things out there in public for people to start to know,” he explained.
President John Dramani Mahama has suspended the Chief Justice, Justice Gertrude Sackey Torkornoo, after determining that three petitions seeking her removal establish a prima facie case to warrant a probe.
In the wake of her suspension, Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, the most senior Justice of the Supreme Court, is acting as Chief Justice.
This is pursuant to Article 144(6) of the 1992 Constitution, which allows the most senior Justice of the Supreme Court to act as the Chief Justice in the event the position of the Chief Justice becomes vacant or the substantive Chief Justice is unable to perform his or her functions, as pertains in this case where Justice Torkornoo is unable to perform her functions due to her suspension.

Ghanaian dancehall artiste, Shatta Wale
Ghanaian dancehall artiste Charles Nii Armah Mensah, popularly known as Shatta Wale, has dismissed claims of tension between himself and fellow musician Stonebwoy, stating that the media is largely responsible for fueling that perception.
Speaking during a TikTok live session, the On God hitmaker revealed that he and Stonebwoy have no issues in real life, contrary to what many people believe.
“Where I live is only about a 30-second drive from Stonebwoy’s place, so we are neighbours. Sometimes, I see that people are worried about us not being at peace, but it’s important to understand that this perception is largely influenced by the media,” Shatta Wale explained.
He further clarified that Stonebwoy himself is uncomfortable with how their relationship is often portrayed in the public domain.
“Stonebwoy doesn’t like this portrayal either. However, it’s all part of the game, and we just have to live with it,” he stated.
Shatta Wale emphasised that the media plays a major role in shaping the narrative of a feud between them, one that he believes fans often take too seriously.
“The media tends to create a narrative that suggests we are at loggerheads, and many of you take it seriously,” he added.

The Chairman of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Sanitation and Water Resources, John Oti Bless, has rejected calls by investigative journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni for the government not to renew Zoomlion Ghana Limited’s contract under the Sanitation Improvement Package (SIP).
In an open letter to Malik Basintalle, Chief Executive Officer of the Youth Employment Agency (YEA), Manasseh Azure Awuni urged him not to sign a new contract with Zoomlion, alleging that “the cleaners’ deal is just one of them, and it stinks to the heavens.”
However, addressing journalists after a tour of Zoomlion’s Kumasi Compost and Recycling Plant (KCARP) in Kumasi, Ashanti Region, on April 24, 2025, Mr. Oti Bless disagreed with Manasseh, warning that thousands of Ghanaians employed by Zoomlion would lose their jobs if the contract is not renewed.
“If there are issues with the contract, that’s why we are leaders; we have to address them,” he said.
He disclosed that his committee plans to invite Manasseh Azure Awuni to appear before them to share his concerns on the subject and find a way forward.
“We want to invite Manasseh Azure to appear before the committee sometime next week to come and share the information he has as far as this issue is concerned, so we can find a way out,” he said.
According to him, Zoomlion and the Jospong Group of Companies (JGC) employ many Ghanaians, and rather than terminating their contract, the best approach would be to support them to grow and create more jobs.
The Chairman emphasised the importance of supporting Ghanaian businesses and job creation, highlighting Zoomlion’s significant role in sanitation management.
“Definitely, once it has to do with Ghanaians, thousands of Ghanaians will lose their jobs if this contract is not renewed. So, we, as a committee and representatives of the people, believe a non-renewal will affect a lot of Ghanaians,” he warned.
Mr. Oti Bless expressed confidence that the government would settle the GH¢1.2 billion owed to Zoomlion, as promised by the Finance Minister, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson.
He also mentioned discussions with the YEA CEO, who will soon be invited before the committee to explore ways to improve remuneration for sweepers.
Mr. Oti Bless, who was highly impressed after the tour, commended Zoomlion and JGC for their substantial investments and urged Ghanaians to support them.
“In fact, I am impressed! This is the first time I’m witnessing this kind of investment. Zoomlion and Jospong are Ghanaian, and I commend them for the wisdom and knowledge given to Dr. Joseph Siaw Agyepong, the Executive Chairman of JGC, by God. I urge the public, service providers, farmers, civil society organizations, and everyone to support Jospong Group, especially the government. A private company’s growth and success largely depend on government support,” the Chairman stated.
The General Manager of KCARP, Samuel Ntummy, expressed appreciation for the committee’s visit to inspect their facilities.
He urged them to support private waste management companies like Zoomlion to further improve sanitation in the country.

One watermelon costs around GH¢50 cedis
A Clinical Research Coordinator at the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research (NMIMR) in Accra, Susan Adu-Amankwah, has expressed concern over the rising cost of food in Ghana.
According to her, prices have increased astronomically, making life difficult for many Ghanaians.
She made these comments in response to recent discussions about the state of healthcare in Ghana.
Speaking in a video shared by 3news on X, she said, “We need to look at healthcare holistically, not just in terms of hospitals. I mean, yes, you want to do the political bit with Agenda 111 and all that, but how are you equipping people? What primary healthcare programs are being put in place to help people take control of their health themselves? You understand? Food is too expensive in this country.”
Adu-Amankwah noted that the price of a single watermelon now ranges from GH¢50 to GH¢150, which is unaffordable for civil servants earning around GH¢3,000 a month.
“Yesterday, I wanted to buy a watermelon, it starts from 50 cedis and can go as high as 150 cedis. A single watermelon! If you’re a civil servant earning GH¢3,000 cedis a month, how can you afford to buy a watermelon for GH¢100 or even GH¢50 cedis? You understand? But we need fruits in our lives.
“Have you tried buying bananas lately? Do you understand that food is expensive? The government needs to look at our health holistically,” she added.
Ghana’s inflation rate stood at 23% at the end of March 2025.

In just 100 days in 1994, about 800,000 people were killed in the violence
A Rwandan beekeeper living in the US has been arrested over his alleged involvement in the 1994 genocide in his country.
Faustin Nsabumukunzi is accused of committing “heinous acts of violence abroad” when he served as a local leader at the start of genocide, the Justice Department said.
The 65-year-old suspect was also charged with visa fraud and attempted naturalisation fraud when he moved to the US in 2003. He pleaded not guilty to the charges and was released on bail.
“Nsabumukunzi repeatedly lied to conceal his involvement in the horrific Rwandan genocide while seeking to become a lawful permanent resident and citizen of the United States,” said John Durham, a federal prosecutor.
In just 100 days in 1994, about 800,000 people were killed in Rwanda by ethnic Hutu extremists.
The mainly Tutsi forces who took power following the genocide were alleged to have killed thousands of Hutu people in Rwanda in retaliation.
Nsabumukunzi is alleged to have set up roadblocks during the genocide to detain and kill Tutsis and to have participated in killings, prosecutors said, citing witnesses.
“Nsabumukunzi used his leadership position to oversee the violence and killings of Tutsis in his local area and directed groups of armed Hutus to kill Tutsis,” the federal prosecutors said.
He was subsequently convicted and sentenced to life in prison in absentia by a Rwandan genocide court, according to US legal papers.
The suspect was arrested on Thursday at his home in Bridgehampton, New York, where he had settled as a gardener and beekeeper in an exclusive enclave on Long Island, according to the US media.
Prosecutors said he had lied to US officials in his immigration application, including by falsely denying any involvement as a perpetrator of the Rwandan genocide when he sought refugee status in 2003.
He allegedly repeated those lies in his subsequent applications for a green card and naturalisation.
“For over two decades, he got away with those lies and lived in the United States with an undeserved clean slate,” said prosecutors in the Eastern District of New York.
He pleaded not guilty and was released on a bond of $250,000 (£188,000).
The bail package requires home detention and GPS monitoring, but he will be allowed to continue working as a gardener.
Nsabumukunzi faces a maximum of 30 years in prison, if convicted.
In Rwanda, Nsabumukunzi oversaw 150 beekeepers and 1,500 hives, according to the New York Times which profiled him in 2006.
In the US, he oversaw about 100 hives for the Hamptons Honey Company, which had hired him to scale up its production, the report said.
Gabriel Alfaya, the owner of Hamptons Honey since 2009, said he was unaware that Nsabumukunzi had worked for the company and had never met him, the New York Times reported.
Nsabumukunzi’s lawyer, Evan Sugar, described his client as “a law-abiding beekeeper and gardener”, in an interview with the AP news agency.
The lawyer said Nsabumukunzi was “a victim of the Rwandan genocide who lost scores of family members and friends to the violence”.
He said his client was rightfully granted refugee status and lawful permanent residence and planned to “fight these 30-year-old allegations” while maintaining his innocence.

The Overlord of Dagbon, Yaa Naa Abukari II, has dispatched a high-level delegation to the Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH) in a bid to mediate the ongoing strike by doctors of the hospital.
Led by Zangbalun Naa Dr. Yakubu II, Chief of the Zangbalun Traditional Area, the delegation met with both the hospital’s management and representatives of the Doctors Association of Tamale Teaching Hospital (DATTH).
In a message delivered on his behalf, the Yaa Naa acknowledged the dedication of the doctors but appealed to them to consider resuming work, particularly emergency, walk-in, and specialist services, to help save lives.
He also expressed his willingness to facilitate dialogue between the Ministry of Health and the doctors to find a lasting resolution to the impasse.
“As a neutral facilitator, will convey your concerns to the minister and engage him to take the necessary steps to address your grievances. We implore you to consider the lives and hang in the balance.
“We urge you in the interim to find a way to ensure the continuity of emergency service. We’re willing to facilitate a meeting with your representatives and the minister to discuss the way forward.”
Speaking on behalf of the Acting CEO of TTH on Friday, April 25, Dr. Salifu Alhassan Tiah, Director of Pharmacy at the hospital, expressed optimism that the Yaa Naa’s intervention would yield positive results.
“I want to appeal to colleagues that, as we are here, if there is any difficulty with our subsistence here, the ultimate place we will go to is his royal Highness, and if he is here, we have nothing to do than to accord this delegation the highest of respect, so we plead that we should all do well to take to heart the word they have for us,” he appealed.
The doctors’ strike, now in its second day, has severely affected service delivery at the hospital, leaving patients and their relatives stranded.
Doctors at the Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH) on April 24, suspended emergency and outpatient services indefinitely, citing “unwarranted attacks” from Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh and Tamale North MP Alhassan Suhuyini.
The decision was made during an emergency general assembly meeting of the Doctors’ Association of Tamale Teaching Hospital (DATTH) on Wednesday, April 23.
It came just hours after an earlier statement from the group condemning an incident during the minister’s visit to the hospital’s Accident and Emergency Unit on Tuesday, April 22.

Techiman, (Bono East), April 25, GNA – Mr Sebastian Sandaare, the Chairman of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Health has reaffirmed the government commitment to retool public health facilities to improve quality healthcare service delivery nationwide.
He said there was the need to improve the nation’s health systems to achieve useful health outcomes.
Mr Sandaare, who is also the Member of Parliament (MP) for the Dafiama,Bussie/Issa Constituency in the Upper West Region, said this when the Committee visited the Techiman Holy Family Hospital in Bono East.
The visit was to enable the Committee members including Professor Dr Titus Beyou, the MP for Lambussie and Mr Emmanuel Kwaku Boam, the MP for Pru East, to assess the operations of the facility.
Mr Sandaare said the visit would enable the Committee to produce a comprehensive report that would guide the government to improve conditions of the various public health facilities and to facilitate the provision of quality healthcare service delivery.
He commended the hospital management, staff and health workers for their efforts in providing quality services, assuring them of the government’s readiness to tackle emerging challenges impeding healthcare service delivery nationwide.
Dr Peter Yeboah, the Executive Director of the Christian Health Association of Ghana (CHAG), said the facility remained committed to collaborate with the government to improve health outcomes.
He said the hospital was a major referral facility in the Bono East Region and served as a Specialist Training Facility for both medical officers and nurses, as well as a research centre and called for increased government support in retooling the place for its effective delivery of services to these communities.
Dr Yeboah said the facility required clinical infrastructure and a medical education centre to be able to efficiently deliver its mandate and called for extensive support from all stakeholders.

NPP, other political parties to protest CJ’s suspension on May 5
The former leader of the Signals Bureau, Kwabena Adu-Boahen, and his wife have taken legal action against Attorney General Dr. Dominic Ayine, accusing him of defaming them during a Thursday, March 24, press event.
