‘Child was raped every half an hour’ in two months in eastern DR Congo: UN

The United Nations has condemned the widespread rape and sexual violence against children in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) reported in the first two months of this year amid heightened tensions between the M23 armed group and government forces.

Spokesperson for the United Nations children’s agency UNICEF, James Elder, warned on Friday that the rate of sexual violence in the DRC against children had “never been higher”.

“Early reports show that children make up between 35 to 45 percent of the nearly 10,000 cases of rape and sexual violence reported … in just January and February of this year,” he told reporters in Geneva, speaking from Goma.

“In short, based on initial data … during the most intense phase of this year’s conflict in eastern DRC, a child was raped every half an hour,” he explained.

After the fallout of the Rwandan genocide in 1994, the DRC has been plagued with violence as rebel groups and government forces fight for control.

However, the conflict escalated in January after M23 fighters advanced rapidly, seizing the eastern city of Goma and the town of Bukavu in February.

At least 3,000 people have been killed, and more have been displaced from the eastern territory, prompting fears of a wider regional war.

Moreover, the UN and Western governments have accused Rwanda of backing M23 and providing the group with arms, which Kigali has denied.

‘Systemic crisis’

Elder warned the recent uptick in violence against children is not an isolated incident due to the conflict but a “systemic crisis”.

“It is a weapon of war and a deliberate tactic of terror. And it destroys families and communities,” he said, stressing that the figures could be “just the tip of the iceberg, hidden beneath layers of fear, stigma, and insecurity”.

He said this “should shake us to our core. Certainly, it should compel urgent and collective action.”

The UN official called for more prevention efforts and “survivor-centred services” that allow for a safe and accessible way to “report abuse without fear”.

“Survivors must see the world stand with them, not turn away. And perpetrators must face justice,” he urged.

I was scared to release ‘Asylum’ due to its controversial lyrics

0

Ghanaian musician, Olivetheboy, has recalled how he was scared to release his hit song ‘Asylum’.

According to the singer, he was uncertain about how the public would react to the song’s controversial lyrics wrapped in a love theme.

Speaking in an interview on 3Music TV, Olivetheboy admitted that even before the release, people around him warned that the song’s content could be seen as “toxic.”

“I was a bit scared when I dropped my song Asylum because of the content in it. People came to me telling me it’s toxic. So, I was thinking about it, that it wasn’t going to do very good. The song’s content is quite harsh,” he said.

‘Asylum’ vividly portrays a heartbreaking situation, with lyrics hinting that a lover’s decision to leave could result in mental breakdown or even fatal consequences.

The narrative implies that if one partner walks away, the other could drive her to madness or even an untimely death.

The song became one of the biggest hits of 2024 and earned a nomination for ‘Most Popular Song of the Year’ at the 26th edition of the Telecel Ghana Music Awards.

Mahama pledges to complete Kumasi Military Hospital

0

President John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed his government’s commitment to improving healthcare delivery for military personnel and their families, with a strong pledge to complete and furnish the Kumasi Military Hospital located at Afari in the Central Command.

Speaking during the graduation ceremony of officer cadets at the Ghana Military Academy on Friday, April 11, the President emphasized that the welfare of the armed forces remains a top priority under his administration.

“Soldiers and civilian staff, your health is also a priority. We have a viable vision to upgrade your medical health facilities. We will, therefore, complete and equip the Kumasi Military Hospital at Afari in the Central Command. We have also budgeted for a military field hospital in Tamale. We want you and your families to have access to quality health care,” President Mahama said.

The President outlined a broader agenda to strengthen support systems for both active personnel and veterans, noting that the government was already taking steps to enhance working conditions and guarantee fair compensation.

“Dear military personnel and civilian staff, I am determined to systematically improve your conditions of service. GEHOC will be one of our key plants in providing sustainable financing for the Ghana Armed Forces. Your sacrifices deserve recognition. For our retired personnel who have sacrificed so much for our nation, we will ensure that your retirement benefits are paid promptly,” he added.

The remarks were met with applause from the audience, which included high-ranking military officials, government representatives, and families of the graduating cadets.

President Mahama’s assurance comes as part of broader efforts to modernize the Ghana Armed Forces and ensure that military personnel receive the care and recognition they deserve for their service to the nation.

NPP did worse things; Mahama is only giving them farmgate treatment – Nana Yaa Jantuah

0

Presidential Staffer Nana Yaa Jantuah has accused members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) of crying foul over alleged intimidation by the Mahama-led administration.

In a statement, Jantuah explained that President John Mahama has been calm and gentle with the NPP, especially when compared to the actions of the NPP while they were in power.

Jantuah, a former General Secretary of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), made these remarks in response to recent raids on the homes of former government officials, including a failed attempt by operatives of the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) to arrest Assin South MP, Rev. John Ntim Fordjour,, at his residence in Spintex on Wednesday.

The incident followed allegations that two suspicious flights had landed at Kotoka International Airport, reportedly carrying drugs and cash.

The raid was described by some as politically motivated, with claims that it was an attempt to use security agencies to intimidate and harass opposition members.

However, in an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Jantuah rejected these claims, stating that the NPP members were being treated far better than they deserved.

“They did worse things, and for them, Mahama is giving them farmgate treatment. What exactly is being done to NPP members? Where is the intimidation here? We have to separate the human aspect from those engaged in vandalism,” she stated.

Jantuah also criticized the Ranking Member of the Defence and Interior Committee for going public with his findings.

“Why do you even come to the media after you had the tip-off? If he doesn’t trust anybody, at least he should trust his Speaker, or there is someone he can trust because this is of national interest. Who leaves evidence in any clandestine activity?” she chided.

Bawku MP Ayariga condemns violent clashes, backs Otumfuo’s peace efforts

By Elsie Appiah-Osei

Accra, April 11, GNA – Mr Mahama Ayariga, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament (MP) for Bawku Central, has condemned the recent violent clashes between police and youth in Bawku, resulting in fatalities, injuries, and an attack on his private residence.

In a statement issued by Mr Ayariga, and copied to the Ghana News Agency, Accra, he expressed sympathy for those affected and appealed for calm amidst rising tensions over the prolonged Bawku conflict.

It acknowledged the alleged deep-seated frustration among the youth regarding the slow pace of resolving the Bawku and Kusaug conflict, as well as concerns over the conduct of some law enforcement officers.

“I understand the anger and frustration of the youth about the pace of the resolution of the situation in Bawku and Kusaug and the misconduct of some misguided law enforcement officers,” it said.

The statement noted that the NDC government remained committed to ensuring justice and lasting peace.

It also reaffirmed Mr Ayariga’s support for the ongoing peace efforts mediated by the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, emphasising that the process had the backing of key traditional authorities in the region.

“In this regard, I will urge all of us to remain committed to the peace process being led by His Majesty the Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

“The Overlord of Kusaug, Zugran Naaba Asigri Abugrago Azoka II, and the Overlord of Mamprugu, Nayiri Naa Bohagu Mahami Sheriga, are fully participating in the process,” it said.

The statement further assured of the MP’s unwavering commitment to his constituents to resolving the long-standing dispute in accordance with Ghana’s laws and judicial decisions.

“Whilst attending an official assignment out of the country, I have learnt about fatal violent encounters between the police and the youth in Bawku and a subsequent vandalization and attempt to burn my private residence in Bawku in anger.

“I want to assure the people of Bawku and Kusaug, whom I represent, that I remain resolute and committed to a lasting resolution of the matter according to the well-established laws and judicial decisions of Ghana, which must ultimately be respected and enforced,” it stated.

The statement dismissed alleged coordinated smear campaigns against Mr Ayariga on social media, calling on the public to disregard “lies being told” by political opponents.

“Kindly disregard the lies being told about me by political detractors and people seeking shamelessly to take advantage of the current unfortunate situation in Bawku and Kusaug to settle personal electoral political scores,” it said.

Reaffirming his long-standing position on the chieftaincy dispute, the statement quoted Mr Ayariga also the Majority Leader, as saying, “My personal position on the matter has been known to all over the years and has never changed. It will not change.

“I agree with the youth of Kusaug that another person cannot reside in Bawku claiming to be chief. But in reverence to the great Asante Stool, I leave that matter to Otumfuo Osei Tutu II to resolve expeditiously. The law enforcement officers must be cautious,” it said.

Cartels, political cronies ‘hijack’ premix fuel; fisherfolk don’t benefit

0

Fishermen pulling back their net after making a catch Fishermen pulling back their net after making a catch

The Executive Director of the Centre for Environmental Management and Sustainable Energy (CEMSE), Ben Nsiah, has stated that fisherfolk do not benefit from premix fuel subsidies despite a decline in crude oil prices on the market.

He asserted that certain cartels and individuals close to power within the marine value chain tend to benefit more than local fish farmers.

In an exclusive interview with GhanaWeb Business, the energy expert said; “With respect to subsidies, I think that the only product subsidized for us locally has been the premix, which is used to support fishermen or people who engage in certain domestic marine activities.”

“I think that these premix subsidies that we give to some of these fisherfolk or fish farmers do not benefit them but rather benefit certain cartels or perhaps some political cronies within the value chain, because there’s a lot of leakage when it comes to premix subsidies in Ghana. Some corrupt politicians are benefiting, while these fishermen are not,” Ben Nsiah added.

The National Premix Fuel Committee (NPFC) Regulations, 2016 (L.I. 2233), instruct the Landing Beach Committee (LBC) to undertake developmental projects within the community using profits from the sale of premix fuel, of which 53 percent is allocated for community development.

The prices of fish mostly increase due to the shortage of premix fuel.

It is worth recalling that the previous government introduced digital canoe identification cards to streamline the process of purchasing premix fuel, thereby addressing the stress, hoarding, and challenges in fuel acquisition.

The new digital system aims to enable fisherfolk to directly access the quantity of premix fuel they require at the pumps using their digital canoe identification cards, which are linked to their vessels.

The data generated will be essential for re-ordering, while each order is monitored and measured against timelines to enhance delivery efficiency.

‘He doesn’t handle his social media’ – Vida on claims Stonebwoy unfollowed Peller over Shatta Wale

0

Public Relations Officer of Burniton Music Group, Vida Adutwumwaa Public Relations Officer of Burniton Music Group, Vida Adutwumwaa

The Public Relations Officer of Burniton Music Group, Vida Adutwumwaa, has addressed recent criticisms surrounding dancehall artiste Stonebwoy’s decision to unfollow Nigerian social media influencer, Peller.

It will be recalled that Stonebwoy appeared in a live TikTok session with Peller ahead of his UK concert on March 8, 2025, where he even invited Peller to join him on his album tour.

The interaction sparked controversy online, with some social media users criticising Stonebwoy for choosing to associate with a Nigerian influencer over Ghanaian content creators.

Peller later revealed in a separate live TikTok session that Stonebwoy had unfollowed him, speculating it was due to his recent interactions with Ghanaian musician Shatta Wale.

Responding to the allegations, Vida Adutwumwaa clarified in an interview with Onua FM on April 10, 2025, that Stonebwoy does not personally manage his social media accounts.

“We have a crew that handles Stonebwoy’s social media accounts. So, at any point, two or more people are handling our accounts, and there won’t be a report of everything that happens on social media.

She further explained that the social media team only reports major issues to the artiste, and their primary focus is to promote his music and brand.

“The main thing we post on the social media handle is his music, and things centred around promoting him. We only report to him if there is a big issue that requires his approval.

“As to who we follow and unfollow is up to the team and we don’t have a meeting on who to follow and unfollow. Also, if the artiste wants to have a relationship with a certain personality, we can choose to follow or unfollow but it doesn’t have anything to do with a certain artiste,” she added.

Law against mis/disinformation to be laid before Parliament – Sam George

0

Samuel Nartey George, Minister of Communications, Digital Technology and Innovations Samuel Nartey George, Minister of Communications, Digital Technology and Innovations

The Minister of Communications, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, has signaled to actors in the media space that a bill will soon be sent to Parliament for debate and approval to check misinformation and disinformation.

He, however, clarified that this bill will not cover criticisms of the government.

Speaking in an interview with TV3 on April 11, he warned against deliberate peddling of falsehood and misinformation on multiple forms of media.

“Irrespective of your political colour, if you engage in peddling of fake news, the law will deal with you,” he said.

Sam George first made the proclamation about the legislation to combat misinformation and disinformation during parliamentary proceedings on February 5.

The Ningo-Prampram MP emphasised the urgent need for a legal framework to address the growing threat of false information, both in Parliament and across the country.

“The ministry will be coming again to deal with the issues of misinformation and disinformation with legislation to this House. And I will urge Members of Parliament to support it,” he stated.

He cited the case of Oliver Barker-Vormawor, who was invited by the Appointments Committee of Parliament over an alleged doctored social media post.

He mentioned instances where altered images of him were presented on the floor of Parliament to stress the dangers of manipulated digital content.

“Even in this chamber yesterday, there was misinformation. In fact, in the past one week, this House has carried out business on two occasions on the back of misinformation,” he noted.

The minister re-echoed the government’s commitment to cracking down on individuals who deliberately spread false information, stating that such acts should attract legal consequences.

“It’s important that we take misinformation and disinformation seriously and deal with it once and for all, and crack the whip and make sure that persons who are actively engaged in this face the full rigours of the law,” he said.

3rd Northern Trade, Industry And Investment Summit Launched

0

Ali Adolf John and other stakeholders at the Summit

The Center for Policy Development has launched the 3rd Northern Trade, Industry and Investment Summit, in Tamale in the Northern region.

This was in collaboration with the Ghana Export Promotion Authority, University for Development Studies, Northern Development Authority, Ghana Free Zones Authority, Ghana Tourism Authority, Ghana Enterprise Agency, Ghana Investment Promotion Center, Ghana Revenue Authority, Ghana Exim Bank, and Northern Regional Coordinating Council.

The Executive Director of Center for Policy Development, Ismail Yahuza, said the objective of the Trade, Industry and Investment Summit is to create jobs, reduce unemployment and uplift the living standards of the people of the North.

“The only way we can bridge the gap between the North and the South is to improve on economic activities,” he said.

He disclosed that this year’s summit themed, “Enhancing Trade & Industrial Growth through Strategic Investments and Accelerated Export” will include a grand durbar, conferences and seminars, trade exhibitions and an awards night to climax the event and motivate businesses to do more for others to emulate.

The Northern Regional Minister, Ali Adolf John, speaking at the launch noted that the summit is a platform where investors, policymakers, entrepreneurs, and development actors converge to connect ideas with funding, challenges with solutions, and aspirations with tangible outcomes.

“Our focus is to explore how strategic investment can ignite industrial growth, and how a deliberate push toward export-led development can elevate the Northern Region onto the global economic stage,” he said.

The Northern Regional Minister, indicated that the region is rich, not only in natural resources, but in human capital, cultural heritage, and cross-border trade potential.

“With vast arable lands, emerging agro-industries, and a youthful entrepreneurial population, the region is well positioned to become a hub for Agro-processing. What we need now is targeted investment, investment that is smart, sustainable, and inclusive. Investment that brings jobs, improves infrastructure, builds local capacity, and opens markets beyond our borders,” he added. “Let us not forget, our domestic market is important, but it is only the beginning. If we are to industrialise and grow sustainably, we must produce to export. We must add value to what we grow and create and connect it to markets across Africa and the world. Through strategic partnerships, better trade facilitation, and targeted support for SMEs and cooperatives, we can turn Tamale and the wider Northern belt into an export-ready zone, one that contributes meaningfully to Ghana’s goals under initiatives like the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).”

He assured stakeholders of the government’s unwavering commitment to promoting industrialisation and investment across all parts of Ghana, through programmes such as the Big Push, 24hr economy, business development entrepreneurship, and agriculture and agri business development amongst many others.

“We are therefore laying the foundation for a more resilient and diversified economy. We will continue to work to improve infrastructure, create a conducive business environment, and reduce barriers to investment and export, because we believe that real transformation happens when the private sector thrives,” he said.

Meet Chelsea’s Ghanaian youth sensation

0

Josh Acheampong is having a breakthrough season with Chelsea and is on course to win his first title with the Blues.

The English-born Ghanaian has been sensational for Chelsea in the UEFA Europa Conference League and earned praise from manager Enzo Maresca for yet another impressive display in a 2-0 win over Legia Warsaw on Thursday, April 10, 2025.

“The one I fell in love with tonight was Josh Acheampong. For me, potentially, he can be a fantastic player for this club and in football in general,” he said after the game.

“Since we started, I’ve been in love with him, but tonight he showed he can be a very good player for this club. A good player shows you they can play in different positions,” Maresca added.

Born to Ghanaian parents, Acheampong joined Chelsea’s academy at the age of eight and has risen through the ranks to the first team.

He is a defender who plays as a right-back, possessing exceptional defensive and attacking qualities. He fits the modern game with a good passing range, is technically adept, and demonstrates strong defensive awareness.

He was promoted to the senior team in December 2024 after signing a long-term contract that runs until 2029.

Acheampong, 18, was born in the London Borough of Waltham Forest on May 5, 2006. He is eligible to represent Ghana, England, and Ireland.

He currently holds English and Irish citizenship but has yet to secure Ghanaian citizenship. His ties to Ireland remain unclear.

Josh Acheampong has made nine appearances for Chelsea this season and has been the breakout star of the team. He has featured in four Premier League games, four Conference League matches, and one English Football League Cup game.

Why fears are growing of a return of civil war to South Sudan

0

Rising tensions in the east African country of South Sudan, culminating in the 26 March arrest of Vice-President Riek Machar, have sparked concerns that the world’s youngest nation is heading for another civil war.

His party, the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement In Opposition (SPLM-IO), has said that his house arrest “effectively brings… to a collapse” the fragile 2018 peace agreement that ended five years of fighting.

What’s the background?

South Sudan, one of the world’s poorest countries, gained independence from Sudan in 2011 after decades of struggle led by the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM), now under President Salva Kiir.

Just two years into independence, a civil war erupted when Kiir dismissed Machar as vice-president, accusing him of plotting a coup.

The ensuing conflict, largely fought along ethnic lines between supporters of the two leaders, resulted in an estimated 400,000 deaths and 2.5 million people being forced from their homes – more than a fifth of the population.

As part of the peace deal, Machar was reinstated as vice-president within a unity government that was meant to pave the way for elections.

Why is there tension now?

The current crisis was sparked at the beginning of March when the White Army militia, which was allied to Machar during the civil war, clashed with the army in Upper Nile state and overran a military base in Nasir.

Then on 7 March a UN helicopter attempting to evacuate troops came under fire, leaving several dead, including a high-ranking army general.

Nearly three weeks later, Machar and several of his associates were arrested. They were accused of trying to stir up a rebellion.

“The prospect for peace and stability in South Sudan has now been put into serious jeopardy,” Oyet Nathaniel Pierino, deputy leader of SPLM-IO, said at the time.

What about the 2018 peace deal?

While Machar’s inclusion in the unity government was a key part of the agreement, other parts of it have not been implemented.

The key issue for many South Sudanese is the security arrangement.

The deal outlined how former rebel forces and government soldiers would be brought together into a unified national army made up of 83,000 troops. The remainder were supposed to be disarmed and demobilised.

But this has not happened and there are still lots of militias aligned to different political groups.

The deal also outlined the establishment, with the help of the African Union, of a court meant to try the perpetrators of the violence. But this has not been created, in part because those holding some of the top positions in government are reluctant to set up something that could see them put on trial.

Elections that were supposed to happen in 2022 have still not taken place and neither has a new constitution been drawn up.

What is the problem between Machar and Kiir?

While Kiir and Machar, both in their 70s, were part of the SPLM that fought for independence, long-standing tensions exist.

These have been fuelled by ethnic divisions – Kiir is Dinka, while Machar is Nuer – and competing political ambitions.

When Kiir sacked Machar in 2013, triggering the civil war, Machar denounced him as a “dictator”.

Creating further problems between the two are the repeated postponements of elections. Polls have been delayed four times, leaving Machar unable to fulfil his presidential ambitions.

Who is Riek Machar?

Born in 1952, the 72-year-old was the 27th son of the chief of Ayod and Leer and was brought up in the Presbyterian Church.

As an undergraduate, he studied mechanical engineering at the University of Khartoum and in 1984 earned a PhD in philosophy and strategic planning at the UK’s Bradford University.

He switched sides on several occasions during the battle to secede from Sudan, as he sought to strengthen his position and that of his Nuer ethnic group.

He became vice-president of South Sudan at independence in 2011. Machar was sacked in 2013 and then reinstated as part of a deal in 2016, but then fled as fighting resumed.

Who is Salva Kiir?

Born in 1951, the 73-year-old devout Roman Catholic was the son of a cattle herder and the eighth of nine children.

At 17, he joined the Anyanya, one of the rebel groups that was fighting for southern independence during the First Sudanese Civil War in 1967. Sixteen years later – in the Second Sudanese Civil War – he was one of the five founding members of the Sudan People’s Liberation Army/Movement.

The former rebel commander, who specialised in military intelligence, was seen as a moderate within the SPLM and became its leader in 2005 after the death of John Garang in a helicopter crash

He became president of South Sudan on independence and has remained in that position for 14 years as no elections have taken place.

How bad could things get?

Nicholas Haysom, head of the UN mission in South Sudan, has warned the country is “teetering on the brink of a return to full-scale civil war”, which would devastate the nation that is still dealing with the aftermath of the last conflict.

There are concerns that a return to fighting could lead to “proxy warfare in the region”, according to Daniel Akech, an analyst at the Crisis Group think-tank.

“South Sudan is filled with so many armed groups, they’re all seeming to be gearing up for military engagement.”

The war in neighbouring Sudan adds another element of instability.

What is being done to ease the tensions?

The leaders of the members of the regional grouping Igad – including Uganda – are supposed to be the guarantors of the 2018 deal.

Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni was in Juba recently and met Kiir, but the outcome of their discussions is not known.

Ugandan troops were also deployed to the country last month. South Sudan’s government said the deployment was part of a long-standing agreement with its neighbour and the soldiers are there to support the army.

An African Union delegation was also in the capital and, as well as talking to the president, diplomats hoped to sit down with Machar – but that did not happen. There has been not a statement from the AU in the wake of the visit.

Western embassies including the US and the UK have released statements calling for the de-escalation of tensions, but it is not clear what impact these have had.

Stonebwoy Not Behind Peller Unfollow Saga – PRO Clarifies

0

The Public Relations Officer of Burniton Music Group, Vida Adutwumwaa, has responded to recent criticisms regarding dancehall artiste Stonebwoy’s alleged decision to unfollow Nigerian social media influencer, Peller.

Stonebwoy had earlier engaged in a live TikTok session with Peller ahead of his UK concert on March 8, 2025, during which he invited the influencer to join him on his album tour. However, the interaction sparked backlash from a section of social media users, who accused Stonebwoy of sidelining Ghanaian content creators in favour of Nigerians.

Subsequently, Peller disclosed during another TikTok live session that Stonebwoy had unfollowed him, speculating that the action might have been influenced by his recent online engagements with Ghanaian musician Shatta Wale.

Clarifying the issue in an interview with Onua FM on April 10, 2025, Vida Adutwumwaa explained that Stonebwoy does not personally manage his social media handles.

“We have a dedicated team responsible for managing Stonebwoy’s social media platforms. At any given time, two or more people are in charge, and not every activity or action taken is directly reported to Stonebwoy,” she stated.

She further noted that the primary focus of the social media team is to promote the artiste’s music and brand.

“Our social media content is largely focused on Stonebwoy’s music and activities aimed at enhancing his brand visibility. Only major issues requiring his personal attention are brought to him,” she added.

Addressing the specific issue of following and unfollowing individuals on social media, she clarified that such actions are typically left to the discretion of the social media team.

“Decisions on who to follow or unfollow are determined by the team and are not necessarily influenced by the artiste. If Stonebwoy wishes to establish a relationship with a particular individual, we accommodate that, but following or unfollowing someone is not done to target any artiste or personality,” she emphasised.

NPP made no investment in ECG during their first term – Dubik Mahama

0

Former ECG boss, Samuel Dubik Mahama, has revealed that the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) saw little to no investment during President Nana Akufo-Addo’s first term in office.

Speaking at the JoyNews National Dialogue on Thursday, Mr. Mahama said the government’s attention was focused on privatising ECG rather than improving its infrastructure and operations.

Court Affirms Annoh- Dompreh’s Election

0

Frank Annoh-Dompreh

A High Court in Koforidua has reaffirmed the election of Frank Annoh-Dompreh as Member of Parliament (MP) for the Nsawam/Adoagyiri Constituency, by dismissing a petition challenging his election last year.

This follows the decision of the court presided over by Justice Krofa Addae to uphold an application filed by Gary Nimako Marfo, the Director of Legal Affairs of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), asking the court to dismiss a petition filed by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidate for the area, Amenorpe Philibert Fummey.

The court, in its decision, dismissed the petition on ground that it had no merit, thereby reaffirming Mr. Annoh-Dompreh as the duly elected Member of Parliament for the area.

The court’s decision shutters the claims of the NDC, which challenged the declaration of the Electoral Commission (EC).

The party had vowed to contest the result, promising to use all legal avenues to ensure the declaration was overturned.

The parliamentary candidate subsequently filed an election petition challenging the legitimacy of Mr. Annoh-Dompreh’s election.

He later filed an application for substituted service which was granted by the court, and the MP was served with the petition through the substituted service.

The substituted order, issued on February 21, 2025, compelled Mr. Annoh-Dompreh, the Electoral Commission and Clerk of Parliament to appear before the court in Koforidua.

The court also ordered that the service be done through the High Court’s notice board, NPP office, Electoral Commission, the police station, the main lorry station, Fawe FM, and selected information centres.

The MP was served with the substituted order on February 26, 2025, paving a way for him to enter an appearance and put up a defence.

‘My dad has done a lot for us’ – Jordan Ayew

0

Ghana international Jordan Ayew has lauded the importance of his dad, Abedi Pele, in his career and that of his brothers.

Abedi is arguably one of the biggest talents to come out of Africa, with his sons, Ibrahim Ayew, Andre and Jordan all tolling the same path.

Jordan and Andre both played for Abedi’s former club, Olympique Marseille, before going their separate path.

Now at Leicester City, Jordan, who has 300 Premier League appearances under his belt, highlighted the importance of his parents in his life.

“My Dad has done a lot, for not only me, but my whole family. It’s not easy to come after your father in a sense of the expectations being so high back home and even in Europe,” he told the club’s website.

“I think me and my brother have coped really well with it and tried to focus on ourselves and ensure that we had our own journey.”

On his mom, he added, “My Mum tells me that, but mums are always positive! Personally, that’s how I feel, that my parents can be proud of the journey me and my brother have made.”

The Black Stars captain is confident both he and his brother Andre still have a lot to offer.

“There’s still more to come from us, and hopefully we can give them more moments to enjoy,” he continued.

MzGee opens up on sabotage, body shaming

MzGee is a media personality MzGee is a media personality

Media personality MzGee has sparked conversations about intra-gender support and respect with a monologue on her Gee O’clock show, urging deeper reflection on the contradictions in how women treat one another, particularly in professional settings.

In a heartfelt reflection, MzGee recounted an early experience in her career where her relentless pursuit of exclusive stories was downplayed by a colleague simply because she had no children.

“I used to hop. Wherever there was an event, you’d find me there. Even if you didn’t invite me, I’d show up because I wanted to get exclusives,” she recalled.

“One day, a colleague said, ‘Gee, you don’t have a child, so you’re all over the place. If you had a child, you wouldn’t have had the time to be roaming and scouting for news.’”

For MzGee, that remark wasn’t just a passing comment — it was a stark reminder of the subtle ways women undermine one another, especially in professional environments.

“Someone will say it’s not a big deal, but it is a big deal,” she stressed. “Let’s assume that at the time the comment was made, I was struggling to have a child. How would it have felt?”

She lamented the irony of such behaviour, especially when some of these same women go on to make bold declarations about women’s empowerment on days like International Women’s Day.

The broadcaster also touched on body shaming — another issue she says often originates from women.

“I am a victim of body shaming, and it mainly came from women. I even had to write on my Facebook page that the rate at which women confidently body shame women is alarming. It gives men the pleasure to do same,” she noted.

According to MzGee, while she finds joy in seeing women succeed, she believes that the deep-seated habit of tearing each other down must be addressed with urgency.

“I get excited when women are excelling… but the things women do to women!” she exclaimed. “You’ll see people who cannot go a day without makeup come and say ‘look at her face without makeup’… and it’s mostly women writing those ill, nasty comments.”

“It’s about time we changed and treated our fellow woman kindly, respected our fellow woman and be gracious to our fellow woman. If we did this, there is no way a man would have the infantry to come and say rubbish and nonsense to a woman.”

MzGee began her media career in 2005 at Eagle FM while studying at Cape Coast Technical University. She later worked with Skyy TV and Pravda Radio. After participating in TV3’s ‘Hottest Host’ reality show, she interned at the station and pursued further education at the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA).

In 2014, she joined the Multimedia Group, where she hosted programs like Campus Show and Day Break on Hitz FM. In 2018, she launched her own TV show, Gee Spot, on Joy Prime. She moved to Media General in 2019, taking on roles as a presenter and producer on TV3 and 3FM, where she hosted shows such as ShowBuzz and Mentor.

In March 2023, MzGee joined Despite Media as host of UTV’s United Showbiz.

Digital payments lag among local firms

0

Kenneth Ashigbey, CEO-Ghana Chamber of Telecommunications Kenneth Ashigbey, CEO-Ghana Chamber of Telecommunications

Ghana’s push toward a cash-light economy is facing a slower-than-expected uptake of digital payments by businesses, according to findings from a new nationwide study by the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) and Research for Financial Inclusion and Development (ReFinD) initiative.

The report, which forms part of the 2024 Integrated Business Establishment Survey (IBES), shows that only 37 percent of firms across the country currently accept or use digital payment platforms. Adoption is particularly low in the agricultural sector, where firms are least likely to use such services.

While this data underscores the transformative potential of digital finance for business growth and financial inclusion, uptake remains heavily concentrated in Greater Accra and a few regional capitals. Knowledge gaps, fears of frau and uncertainty over financial returns continue to limit broader adoption, especially among smaller enterprises.

Professor Peter Quartey, Director-Institute for Statistical Social and Economic Research (ISSER), said during the report’s launch that while progress has been made, digital payments remain underutilised in the business sector.

“Although cash still dominates, we’ve made some strides,” he noted. “But constraints like taxation – particularly the e-levy – and security concerns continue to hold back adoption.”

The study finds that most firms using digital platforms still rely on personal mobile money accounts, which are costlier and less efficient for business transactions. Larger companies tend to diversify their usage, leveraging merchant accounts that are more aligned with business needs and help drive revenue growth.

Despite the strong performance of female managers in boosting revenue and the adoption of merchant accounts, women-owned businesses often struggle with limited access to capital – one of the key barriers to greater adoption.

“Female managers tend to be better at managing firms,” said Prof. Quartey. “But the issue is that most women lack the capital to own or expand businesses and that limits their ability to invest in digital finance.”

Francis Annan, an assistant professor of economics at the University of California, Berkeley and a co-lead of the ReFinD project, described the results as “striking”. He said while nearly 95 percent of individuals surveyed have used digital payments as consumers, only about 37 percent of businesses reported doing the same.

“This large gap tells us a lot about selection issues in the market,” Mr. Annan said. “Firms face barriers like lack of understanding and concerns about security. For more educated users, these barriers aren’t binding. But across the broader firm landscape, these constraints are real and they matter.”

He believes that addressing these barriers will not only expand access to finance but also strengthen firm-level productivity and, by extension, the national economy.

“When firms grow, they hire more people, produce more and the entire economy benefits,” he said. “Starting from a low base means our interventions can yield high returns,” he added.

To boost adoption, the report recommends a multi-pronged strategy: improving cybersecurity in digital finance systems; incentivising female-led businesses; expanding digital infrastructure beyond major cities; and strengthening digital and financial literacy among business owners, managers and staff.

The report also advocates inclusive partnerships between academic researchers and ecosystem actors such as fintechs, mobile money operators, banks, regulators and policymakers to co-develop practical, data-driven solutions.

Kenneth Ashigbey, CEO-Ghana Chamber of Telecommunications, stressed the importance of leveraging such insights to design inclusive financial products. “We’ve always known there’s a need to move beyond peer-to-peer to merchant payments,” he said. “The gender gap is clear and we now have the data to guide how we address it.”

Mr. Ashigbey also questioned continued use of the term ‘informal’ in reference to unregistered businesses, suggesting such labels may discourage support for their formalisation and integration into digital ecosystems. He called for a renewed focus on education and outreach, noting that smartphone penetration in areas like Wa is above the national average due to local educational efforts.

“This tells us we need to do more at the community level,” Mr. Ashigbey said. “Working with the Bank of Ghana and Ministry of Finance, we intend using this data to target educational campaigns more effectively.”

Ultimately, the report underscores that while digital finance holds immense promise for Ghana’s business ecosystem, realising its full potential will require deliberate, inclusive and sustained action across the public and private sectors.

Family of Junior Pope

One year after the death of popular Nollywood actor Junior Pope, his wife, Jennifer Awele Odonwodo, shared an emotional message on social media.

This is the first time Jennifer has spoken publicly since his passing in April 2024. In her post, she talked about how life has changed for her and their three sons — Jason, Jaden, and Jamon.

She said the pain of losing her husband is still very fresh and that the children often ask about the promises their father made before he died. These include plans to take Jason and Jaden to a football academy and buy a toy car for little Jamon.

“I still don’t have the right words to respond to Jason and Jaden,” she wrote. “Then the littlest one, Jamon… keeps asking when Daddy is bringing the big toy car he promised.”

Jennifer thanked everyone who has supported her and her family, saying they feel Junior Pope’s love around them every day.

“Though you’re no longer by our side, you live on in every memory, every smile, and every tear,” she added.

She ended her tribute by saying, “We cannot question God, right? May your soul rest in perfect peace, my love.”

Junior Pope was a well-loved actor in the Nigerian movie industry. His death left a big gap in Nollywood and in the hearts of many fans.

Otumfuo mediation will deliver lasting peace in Bawku – Mahama

0

President John Dramani Mahama has condemned the renewed violence in Bawku, expressing confidence that the peace process led by Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II will ultimately bring lasting stability to the area.

On Thursday, April 10, Bawku witnessed a violent confrontation between police and some youth, reportedly resulting in deaths and injuries. The private residence of Member of Parliament Mahama Ayariga was also allegedly set ablaze during the chaos.

Speaking at the Graduation Parade of the Ghana Military Academy on Friday, April 11, 2025, President Mahama reiterated his government’s commitment to restoring peace in the troubled enclave.

“The Ghana Armed Forces is engaged in several threats to maintain peace and security in our nation. One major flash point is the Bawku area. Only two days ago, a situation that took place in the market triggered an unfortunate loss of life and criminal vandalism of property. I wish to emphasise that nobody gains from this conflict and insecurities,” he said.

He noted that the mediation process initiated by the Asantehene, which brings all key stakeholders together, remains the best route to peace.

“We have triggered the Otumfuo mediation process, which has all the stakeholders to ensure a roadmap towards peace. I am assured by the Asantehene that the process will resume next week when he returns from his brief visit abroad,” he stated.

President Mahama also stressed that his administration will act on all allegations of criminality, promising thorough investigations.

“We will take all allegations of crime seriously and trigger our security service investigation machinery to go after criminals, no matter who they are. But let me state emphatically also that we do not have the resources and time to engage in any game of smoke and mirrors,” he added.

Ghanaian artistes, from L to R: Obrafour, Kofi Nti and Kojo Antwi Ghanaian artistes, from L to R: Obrafour, Kofi Nti and Kojo Antwi

Ghana’s music industry has produced timeless Highlife and Hiplife hits that continue to inspire artistes around the world.

Over the years, Ghanaian musicians have created sounds that remain relevant today, with some international artistes sampling these classics in their songs, often without consent.

Here is a list of some popular Ghanaian songs sampled by artistes from different countries over the years:

1. “Oye Ohene (Remix)” by Obrafour ft. Tinny (2003); sampled by Drake

Netizens were stunned when it was revealed that Drake’s 2022 song “Calling My Name” was a sample of Obrafour’s “Oye Ohene Remix”.

The phrase “Killer cut blood, killer cut”, originally featured at the beginning of Obrafour’s track, was included in Drake’s song.

This led to Obrafour suing the Canadian musician for $10 million over alleged copyright infringement.

2. “Odo Nwom” by Kofi Nti ft. Ofori Amponsah (2004), sampled by Tion Wayne ft. One Acen

British rapper Tion Wayne and singer One Acen sampled the romantic Highlife classic “Odo Nwom” in their 2019 track “2/10.”

The UK-based artistes used the melody to create a fresh urban Hip-hop vibe while still capturing the essence of the original Ghanaian love song, particularly the “Owaee, Owaee” part.

3. “Ahomka Wo Mu” by VIP (2003), sampled by Wizkid & Mut4Y

VIP’s hit song “Ahomka Wo Mu” is one of Ghana’s biggest Hiplife anthems.

Nigerian producer Mut4Y and superstar Wizkid sampled it for their 2017 hit “Manya” infusing the Ghanaian rhythm into Afrobeat.

Interestingly, Nigerian actress Patience Ozokwor (Mama G) also sampled the same song in her collaboration with Tonto Dikeh, titled “Make We Jolly”.

4. “Odofo Nnyi Ekyir Biara” by Ebo Taylor (1973), sampled by Kelly Rowland

American singer Kelly Rowland brought Ghanaian Highlife to the global stage when she sampled Ebo Taylor’s 1973 classic “Odofo Nnyi Ekyir Biara” in her 2021 song “Black Magic”.

Ebo Taylor’s influence as a pioneer of Highlife has since resonated in modern R&B and soul music.

5. “Odo Nwom” by Ofori Amponsah ft. Kofi Nti (2004), sampled by Rotimi ft. Afro B

Ofori Amponsah’s “Odo Nwom” was sampled not once but twice.

In 2019, American-Nigerian actor and singer Rotimi teamed up with UK-based Afro B to release “Mega Love” which heavily borrowed “Odo Nwom” rhythm.

6. “Nfa Me Nko Ho” by Kojo Antwi (2002), sampled by Yxng Le & Frenna

Kojo Antwi, known for his smooth vocals and powerful love songs, released “Nfa Me Nko Ho” in 2002.

Dutch artistes Yxng Le and Frenna sampled it in their 2021 hit “Wat Is Je Naam”.

7. “Kotosa” by Wutah (2008), sampled by Flavour

Wutah’s “Kotosa” was one of the biggest dance tracks in Ghana back in 2008.

Nigerian singer Flavour reworked the song into his 2012 track “Kwarikwa” (Remix).

Gabon holds its breath as coup mastermind eyes presidency

0

Every day, 40-year-old Landry Obame-Mezui drives a taxi in Gabon’s capital Libreville.

But it’s not just any taxi. It’s a sparkling, brand-new white car with the inscription “Taxi Gab+”.

For Mr Obame-Mezui, it is a shining symbol of a promise to Gabon’s youth from coup mastermind-turned-transitional leader Gen Brice Oligui Nguema, who has ruled since August 2023.

With 40% of young people out of work, Oligui Nguema has offered more than 800 new vehicles to young people through a hire purchase scheme.

Mr Obame-Mezui used to drive a taxi owned by someone else. He says, thanks to the interim leader, he now has a better chance of becoming an entrepreneur.

“Before August 30 [2023], things weren’t going as I wished, but today I have something stable on which I can set objectives and go far,” he says, leaning on his new car.

It is no secret who the taxi driver will vote for in Saturday’s presidential and general election – “I will vote for the builder Oligui Nguema” says the slogan on his car roof.

“The president came in with a new way of doing things – action before speeches,” he says, predicting a “crushing victory” at the polls.

Little more than 19 months after the bloodless coup that brought an end to more than five decades of rule by the Bongo family, the people of Gabon are about to head to the polls to choose a new head of state.

Across the capital, there is no secret about who controls the country.

In varied shapes, sizes and designs, billboards and campaign posters of race favourite Oligui Nguema cover the city.

They dominate the airport, markets and neighbourhoods, leaving very little room for the opposition.

“It’s just for the ambiance,” says Shonnys Akoulatele a potential voter who believes there is more to governance than displaying campaign posters.

With little enthusiasm for the campaign, the 30-year-old says she will only vote out of a sense of duty because none of the eight candidates appear to be able to truly transform the country.

“We’re merely seeing a monotony of the previous regime,” says Ms Akoulatele, adding that presidential candidates are former allies of ex-President Ali Bongo.

Alain Claude Bilie-by-Nze, the main challenger in the polls, served as prime minister both under late president Omar Bongo and his son Ali Bongo.

Other aspirants such as Stephane Germain Iloko and Alain Simplice Boungouères were also influential members of the former ruling PDG party.

But all candidates seem keen to distance themselves from the old regime.

Front-runner Oligui Nguema served both Bongo father and son, but now emphasises his role in leading the coup that ousted the Ali Bongo.

He is making the fight against corruption, money laundering and embezzlement a central part of the country’s transition to democracy – including arresting the ex-president’s wife and eldest son and accusing them of illegally enriching themselves, which they deny.

On the campaign trail, he boasts of the roads, hospitals and schools being built under his tenure, promising further projects if elected as president.

Not everyone is convinced.

“The transition was something I loved from the start,” says Libreville resident Jacques Okoumba.

“I appreciated what they were doing, but after several months I realised not everything promised during the transition actually materialised.”

After voting for a new constitution in a referendum in November 2024, many believed Saturday’s election would signal the official end of the Bongo dynasty.

Oligui Nguema’s supporters thought it would complete the work he started with his so-called “liberation coup” a year earlier, ending five decades of corruption scandals, rights abuses and alleged repression.

But political analysts like Bergès Mietté say they doubt how authentic that change is, arguing that political transition is truly valid “when there is a renewal of the political class and method of governance”.

“Looking at the current situation, there’s almost no renewal of the elite, because those in power now were part of the previous regime, be it that of Bongo the father or Bongo the son,” he says.

For most Gabonese, this election is a chance to right some of the wrongs they suffered under the previous regime.

For the first time since 1967, the country will go to the polls without a Bongo or the PDG party on the ticket.

Critics say the new constitution and electoral code were designed to favour Oligui Nguema, because they did not bar the former military officer from running and they introduced age limits which meant older opposition leaders could not challenge him.

But others have dismissed this claim, attributing any potential victory to the fact that Oligui Nguema has no strong competition.

“I don’t want to get married again, I want to have more babies with my ex-husband” – Toriola

Popular Nollywood actress Wumi Toriola has disclosed that she is not interested in getting married but wants to have more babies with her ex-husband.

Recall that in 2023, the actress opened up about why her marriage to her ex-husband failed. According to Wunmi, her marriage ended because her ex-husband always rubbed her face to her face during arguments.

GAF: Serve with integrity, courage and compassion

0

President John Dramani Mahama, Commander-in-Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces, has called on newly commissioned officers to uphold the values of responsibility, integrity, and professionalism as they begin their careers in military service.

He made this charge while addressing the graduating officer cadets at the Ghana Military Academy on Friday, April 11. The graduation ceremony marked the official transition of the cadets into commissioned officers of the Ghana Armed Forces.

In his address, President Mahama reminded the officers of the high expectations the nation has of them and urged them to live up to their duty as future leaders of the military.

“Graduation cadet, today marks the beginning of the beginning of a new chapter in your life. You are no longer officer cadet, you shall soon be officers of the Ghana Armed Forces. The nation looks up to you with expectations, hope and confidence. You are part of the future of the Ghana Armed Forces, your action will shape the destiny of our nation.

“Remember that leadership is not about rank or privilege. Leadership is about responsibility and service. I urge you to live with integrity, courage and compassion. I encourage you to be officers who inspire loyalty. I expect you to be leaders who earn respect and uphold the highest standard of professionalism,” he stated.

The President emphasized that the Ghana Armed Forces is a critical institution in maintaining peace and stability, and as such, those who lead within it must display exemplary conduct and a deep sense of national duty.

The commissioning parade was attended by high-ranking military officials, government representatives, diplomats, and family members of the graduates.

It featured a display of military drills and traditions that marked the cadets’ successful completion of their training.

Kwesi Pratt fumes over NPP’s misguided diplomatic petition on ‘cocaine plane’ saga

0

Kwesi Pratt Jr, the Managing Editor of the Insight Newspaper Kwesi Pratt Jr, the Managing Editor of the Insight Newspaper

The Managing Editor of the Insight Newspaper, Kwesi Pratt Jr, has strongly criticised the growing trend of political parties resorting to diplomatic missions to settle domestic disputes.

Speaking on Metro TV on April 9, 2025, Kwesi Pratt Jr insisted that such practices highlight weaknesses in Ghana’s democratic system and subjects the nation to international ridicule.

“This drama is taking a bizarre proportion… Now, for me, the worst thing that has happened so far is the involvement of diplomatic missions in state issues. I have to be honest here, it is not only the NPP that takes that tangent; the NDC also behaves like that too. We have a small disagreement; we don’t see eye to eye, and then they run to diplomatic missions.

“What’s wrong with the political leaders that we have in this country. Why? They forget that on December 7, we lined up to choose a government. We didn’t vote for diplomatic missions… So, this running to diplomatic missions as if they have oversight responsibility over our governance is strange. I don’t understand it,” he lamented.

His reaction follows the Minority in Parliament’s petition to the Dean of the Diplomatic Corps and Ambassador of Lebanon to Ghana, Maher Kheir, to intervene in the ongoing controversy surrounding the alleged suspicious flights from Gran Canaria that landed at the Kotoka International Airport (KIA).

In a statement issued on April 8, 2025, and signed by the Ranking Member on the Foreign Affairs Committee, Rev John Ntim Fordjour, the Minority appealed to the diplomatic community to support Ghanaian authorities in investigating the alleged landing of two AirMed flights and a Cavok Air cargo flight that reportedly transported suspected illicit drugs and money into the country.

The request follows a press conference held by the Minority on April 1, 2025, during which they raised serious national security concerns and called on state authorities to probe the mysterious flights.

This development has irked the veteran journalist, who has questioned why both parties are quick to request the involvement of diplomatic missions in resolving issues of the state.

GEA CEO Margaret Ansei hails MTN SME Boost for Ghana’s 24-hour economy

0

The Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Enterprises Agency (GEA), Ms. Margaret Ansei, has hailed the newly launched MTN SME Accelerate Programme as a strategic game-changer for Ghana’s Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), describing it as a timely intervention that aligns with the national push for a 24-hour economy.

Speaking at the official launch of the programme on Thursday, April 10, 2025, at the Accra Metropolitan Assembly, Ms. Ansei said the initiative resonates strongly with GEA’s mission to build a resilient, digitally empowered, and globally competitive MSME sector.

“The theme, ‘Business Done Smarter, Faster, and Better’, could not be more appropriate,” she said. “In today’s fast-evolving world, the future belongs to those who can embrace change, leverage technology, and drive smart solutions to sustain their businesses.”

She outlined key initiatives GEA has rolled out to boost digital transformation in the MSME sector, including the SME Innovation and Inclusion Programme – Digitalize for Jobs (D4J), a collaboration with the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), and the U-Spark Project under the UNIDO KAIZEN Expansion Initiative supported by the Government of Japan.

“These interventions are not just about access to finance,” Ms. Ansei emphasized. “They are about building an ecosystem of innovation where MSMEs — from rural seamstresses to youth-led agro-processors — can thrive in the digital age.”

Linking the programme to the broader national development agenda, Ms. Ansei said the MTN SME Accelerate Programme fits squarely into former President John Dramani Mahama’s visionary policy of a 24-hour economy.

“President Mahama’s 24-hour economy is not just about extending business hours — it’s about reimagining productivity, creating jobs, and building businesses that run around the clock,” she noted. “To do this, MSMEs need digital tools, infrastructure, and strategic partnerships like this one with MTN.”

She praised MTN Ghana for going beyond telecommunications to become a “technology enabler” and urged Ghanaian entrepreneurs to take advantage of the platform to accelerate growth and reach global markets.

Following the launch, MTN Ghana also took to social media, reaffirming its commitment to small businesses: “Today marks the beginning of brighter things to come for small businesses. SME Accelerate is designed to position SMEs to work smarter, faster and better with lots of opportunities to move ahead in business. Get ready to accelerate!”

Ms. Ansei concluded her speech with a strong call to action: “When MSMEs rise, Ghana rises. And with a 24-hour economy in sight, the sky is not the limit — it is only the beginning.”

The MTN SME Accelerate Programme is expected to empower thousands of MSMEs across the country with digital tools, business support, and training aimed at improving productivity and market access.

GOC Elections: Akpokavie’s campaign team unveils manifesto to rejuvenate Ghana sports

0

By Simon Asare

Accra, April 11, GNA – The campaign team for Mr Richard Akpokavie, a presidential aspirant in the upcoming Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) elections, has unveiled a bold and comprehensive manifesto targeted at improving Ghana sports.

The “National Sports Federations Manifesto” as it is dubbed, outlines a strategy for elevating athletes, empowering federations, and positioning Ghana as a continental leader in sports innovation and tourism.

Following extensive conversations with athletes, coaches, administrators, and grassroots stakeholders, the campaign team presented Mr Akpokavie with the manifesto during a short ceremony in Accra.

At the core of the manifesto is an athlete-centered philosophy, which encapsulates a comprehensive welfare programme—covering training, mental health support, education, and post-career opportunities—alongside a structured plan to bolster federations with better governance, funding access, and high-performance systems.

“We are not just dreaming of medals; we’re building a system where every athlete has the tools to succeed, and every federation thrives.

“This is a collective ambition to transform Ghanaian sports with integrity, purpose, and unity,” said Mr Akpokavie.

One of the manifesto’s standout proposals is the “Grassroots to Podium Vision”, a long-term strategy to identify and nurture talent from rural fields to international arenas.

This includes the bold introduction of local Olympic Games—a biennial, nationwide multi-sport event aimed at fostering unity, uncovering hidden gems, and embedding Olympic values at the community level.

The campaign also calls for smarter use of Olympic Solidarity Funds, redirecting resources to directly support athletes and federations. From funding international competition fees to powering grassroots training camps, the plan promises to make every cedi count.

Highlighting the role sports can play in driving meaningful economic impact, Mr Akpokavie emphasises the need to commercialise Ghanaian sporting talent and put our nation on the global map.

With the elective congress scheduled for Saturday, April 26, 2025, Mr Akpokavie has been a leading contender in the presidential race, with former Ghana Golf Association President Mike Aggrey who has also stated his intention to contest.

I pity you! – MzGee slams vulgar celebrities

0

MzGee is a media personality MzGee is a media personality

Media personality MzGee has expressed dismay over the way some artistes and celebrities speak about women, using vulgar language with no regard for dignity or decency.

After openly sharing her personal experiences with sabotage and body shaming from fellow women on her Gee O’clock show, she turned her attention to what she said is an equally troubling issue — the casual disrespect of women by public figures, particularly within the entertainment industry.

“Your favorite artiste and celebrity… I may like their songs and whatever, but just when they begin to have the guts to insult a woman’s private part, people’s mothers’ private parts, they’ve lost all the respect,” she said. “Because it shows you don’t respect yourself. I just pity them because I feel they were not brought up well.”

Her concern didn’t stop at the men spewing the insults. She also questioned the silence and sometimes complicity of the women who continue to endorse, support, or even engage with such individuals.

“I pity the women who also go and open up for them to sleep with,” she added. “Anything that has got to do with a woman’s dignity can be protected.”

MzGee’s comments follow a broader reflection on how women often endure harmful treatment, not just from men, but from each other. On the same show, she revisited earlier parts of her career where she faced subtle jabs, invasive comments about motherhood, and relentless body shaming — most of it from other women.

‘Cocaine’ Plane Saga: ‘Fordjour has no obligation to cooperate in his own investigation’

Kofi Bentil is a Vice President of IMANI Africa Kofi Bentil is a Vice President of IMANI Africa

A Vice President of IMANI Africa, Kofi Bentil, has slammed the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) over its attempt to arrest the Member of Parliament (MP) for Assin South, Rev John Ntim Fordjour, over his allegations about cocaine smuggling and money laundering by two planes that landed at the Kotoka International Airport.

According to him, even though Rev Ntim Fordjour made the allegations, he is not obliged by any law to provide evidence of them or be involved in the investigations.

He said that making the allegation is not a crime which means there is no justification for the Assin South MP to be arrested.

“I don’t know what crime he’s committed by the questions he’s asked. If he has made allegations that are not true, it’s for the person arresting him to prove that those allegations constitute a crime.

“And then that person, say it’s a crime, should go to court and prosecute and have him found liable. He does not have to cooperate in his own investigation,” he said in an interview on JoyNews.

The IMANI vice president also explained that Ntim Fordjour, like any citizen of Ghana, has the right to speak on issues happening in the country.

He added that the MP can also ask state authorities questions on national issues and the authorities are obliged by law to answer them.

“Every one of us has the right to freedom of speech. You can say whatever you want to say as long as you don’t insult somebody and you don’t commit a crime with the things that you have said; those include voicing out suspicions. Ntim Fordjour is a citizen of this country and as a citizen of this country, he can say what he wants to say under his freedom of speech. To the extent that he has not insulted anybody or committed any crime, indeed, he is free to say what he wants to say. And if he insults anybody, he can be sued for defamation.

“As a citizen, he can also question public officers all the way to the president and ask questions of them. Article 41 of our constitution enjoins him to do that and public officers owe it to the citizenry to answer candidly, honestly and to the best of their ability and knowledge, using state resources, questions that are asked of the public offices,” he said.

Background:

Rev John Ntim Fordjour, MP for Assin South and the Minority’s Ranking Member on the Defence and Interior Committee, claimed in a press conference on April 1, 2025, that two flights; an air ambulance and a private jet, might have been involved in drug trafficking or money laundering.

He alleged that one of the aircraft, AirMED flight N823AM, landed in Ghana on March 20 and stayed for five days without any record of transporting a patient.

These allegations led President John Dramani Mahama to order security agencies to “immediately and fully collaborate with the honourable Member of Parliament so he provides all necessary information to investigate the allegations and take all action necessary to expose any drug dealing”.

President Mahama also directed all security agencies to work with Rev Ntim Fordjour to investigate the drug trafficking and money laundering claims involving the two suspicious flights at the Kotoka International Airport (KIA).

He emphasised that Ghana has a zero-tolerance policy for drug trafficking and will not allow the country to be used as a transit or final destination for illicit drugs.

On Wednesday, April 9, 2025, NIB officials stormed Ntim Fordjour’s residence to pick him up for questioning regarding his allegations.

However, the officers left the residence without arresting him following the intervention of leading figures of the New Patriotic Party including Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin.

In 2020, some former staff of the defunct Gold Coast Fund Management lamented the loss of their provident fund from Pentrust Limited.

They complained the situation had led to the collapse of their marriages.

“We, the ex-staff of Gold Coast Fund Management, wish to bring to the notice of the National Pension Regulatory Authority, NPRA, and Government about the deliberate attempts by our pension administrator, Pentrust Limited, and Board of Trustees not to pay our full Provident Fund (Tier 3) contributions,” they said.

Some former staff of the defunct Gold Coast Fund Management has bemoaned their inability to access their provident fund (Tier 3) from Pentrust Limited.

This, they said, has rendered them financially unstable to the extent that they cannot cater for the needs of their families.

According to the former staff, the situation has aggravated as their marriages are collapsing because they are financially handicapped.

In a press statement copied to GhanaWeb, the Ex-Gold Coast Fund Management staff noted that “our inability to pay our rents, feed our families and most importantly take care of our wives and children which has led to the dissolutions of marriages and loss of respect in our homes. We are suffering”.

They, therefore, called on the National Pension Regulatory Authority to look into the matter for them to receive their due.

“We, the ex-staff of Gold Coast Fund Management, wishes to bring to the notice of National Pension Regulatory Authority, NPRA and government about the deliberate attempts by our pension administrator, Pentrust Limited and Board of Trustees’s not to pay our full Provident Fund (Tier 3) contributions.”

“Since November 2019, several attempts to get our Provident Fund paid to us have proven futile. The fund administrator has utterly failed to honour our demands. Therefore, we deem it very urgent and necessary to notify the National Pension Regulatory Authority, the regulator of Pentrust Ltd, and government about these developments and the plight of the ex-staff”.

DELAY OF PROVIDENT FUND PAYMENT –

(EX-STAFF OF GOLD COAST FUND MANAGEMENT)

23RD NOVEMBER, 2020

PRESS RELEASE

We, the ex-staff of Gold Coast Fund Management, wishes to bring to the notice of National Pension Regulatory Authority, NPRA and government about the deliberate attempts by our pension administrator, Pentrust Limited and Board of Trustees’s not to pay our full Provident Fund (Tier 3) contributions.

Since November 2019, several attempts to get our Provident Fund paid to us have proven futile. The fund administrator has utterly failed to honour our demands.

Therefore, we deem it very urgent and necessary to notify the National Pension

Regulatory Authority, the regulator of Pentrust Ltd, and government about these developments and the plight of the ex-staff.

It is very sad to note that these deliberate attempts by Pentrust Limited and Trustees, to deny ex-staff their provident fund contribution has brought a lot of suffering and financial burden on us.

These include the inability to pay our rents, feed our families and most importantly take care of our wives and children which has led to the dissolutions of marriages and loss of respect in our homes. In fact, we are suffering.

Our checks indicate Pentrust Limited and The Trustees transferred our Provident Fund money from the custodian bank, The Republic Bank to GN Savings and Loans. As of now, our money is locked with the receiver, Mr Eric Nana Nipah.

This simply means that,

1. Pentrust Limited and the Board of Trustee borrowed our money to the Employer, without our knowledge and without following the due process. An act which is against the pensions regulations.

2 . Our employer invested our money with a different name, that is, GN/ Gold Coast Trustee. Due to this error by the Trustees, the receiver said they are investigating the transaction.

Therefore, the Association of Ex-Staff of Gold Coast Fund Management Ltd respectfully calls on the NPRA, the regulator and The President, His Excellency Nana Akuffo-Addo, as a matter of urgency, to intervene and help in the payment of our provident fund to alleviate our long sufferings.

We know the President being a listening and compassionate, will help us during this difficult time.

Thank you

The debate over Chief Justice Torkornoo’s tenure reflects deeper tensions in Ghana’s democracy. While Barker-Vormawor’s rhetoric may be extreme, his underlying concern—judicial accountability—resonates with many Ghanaians. The ball now lies in President Mahama and the Council of State’s court: their decision will either reinforce public trust in the judiciary or deepen perceptions of a captured legal system.

Woman in court for killing her mother for insurance payout

A 'pastor' has also been arrested in the case and appeared in court on Thursday. A ‘pastor’ has also been arrested in the case and appeared in court on Thursday.

An Mpumalanga woman is expected to appear in the Acornhoek Magistrate’s Court on Friday for allegedly orchestrating the death of her mother for an insurance payout.

The 40-year-old woman was arrested in connection with the murder of Emmie Maonye, who was killed last month.

She is the third person to be arrested in relation to the case. Two other suspects, Thapelo Khoza, 25, and Lebo Magopane, 26, appeared in the same court on Thursday, and were denied bail.

Their case has been postponed to next week.

“The Crime Intelligence Unit in Mpumalanga has played a pivotal role in cracking this case,” said Mpumalanga police Brigadier Donald Mdhluli.

‘Dodgy’ 25-year-old pastor

Mdhluli said Khoza, who claimed to be a pastor, was apprehended in Nelspruit for his alleged involvement in a housebreaking and theft case in Mataffin outside Nelspruit in December 2024.

“Subsequent investigations uncovered connections to other crimes, including Maonye’s case. During the arrest, he was found in possession of stolen items serving as crucial evidence.

“Upon further investigation, it was revealed that he was also a part of the people who reportedly orchestrated Maonye’s death, “ added Mdhluli.

Cracked the case

Mpumalanga police commissioner Major General Zeph Mkhwanazi, commended the police for cracking the case.

“The prevalence of alleged murders linked to insurance claims is a disturbing trend. We urge the public to report such cases promptly, and rest assured, the police will diligently investigate these matters to ensure justice prevails.”

Insurance payout murders

There have been several high-profile cases of murders for insurance payouts. Rosemary Ndlovu is currently serving six life sentences for the murders of her partner and other family members after taking out life insurance policies in their names.

Similarly, Limpopo police officer Raesetja Rachel Shokane Kutumela is currently facing 19 charges, including murder, fraud, and defeating the ends of justice.

She allegedly took out several funeral, accidental, and life insurance policies on vulnerable individuals, including some who were disabled or mentally challenged, making herself a beneficiary.

“She is currently linked to about six insurance-related murders, and evidence shows she has pocketed at least R10 million,” said police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe.

Insurance fraud on the rise?

The Douglasdale Community Policing Forum (CPF) recently warned of a rise in cases of insurance fraud in the area.

According to the Randburg Sun, CPF public relations officer Freda Boiles said authorities have spotted a trend of people lying about stolen laptops, cellphones, and other valuables to get an insurance payout.

Provide security for final EC declaration in Ablekuma North – NPP to IGP

0

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has noted that it is waiting on the newly appointed Inspector General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, to provide adequate security for Electoral Commission (EC) officials to declare the outcome of results from the remaining polling stations in Ablekuma North.

The constituency remains without a Member of Parliament following a disagreement between the NPP and the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) over the results of the 2024 parliamentary election.

The NDC has since taken the matter to court, seeking an order to have its parliamentary candidate, Ewurabena Aubyn, declared the winner.

Speaking on the issue, the NPP’s Director of Legal Affairs, Gary Nimako, emphasized that the party expects action from the new IGP.

“We have been engaging the new IGP and the Electoral Commission, and we are waiting for security to collate the only three outstanding polling stations,” he said.

“In any event, if you put together a collation of the entire polling station, you will know who has won or lost. So, they just have to put it together, and when they do, the official can tell us who has won or lost,” he added.

The President’s nominee for the position of District Chief Executive (DCE) for the Central Tongu District of the Volta Region has been overwhelmingly approved by the Assembly Members (AMs) at a colourful ceremony at Mafi Adidome, the administrative capital.

Out of the forty (40) AMs who were present and voted at the confirmation ceremony, thirty-eight (38) of them voted ‘Yes’ for Mr. Addison Dodzi Mornyuie, representing ninety-five (95) per cent of the valid votes cast while two (2) AMs objected to his confirmation bid to become the next DCE for the area.

The event was witnessed by a large number of chiefs, and queen mothers as well as a cross-section of citizens of the district including some Members of Parliament (MPs), Heads of Department (HODs) of the Assembly, some past and a few of the just-confirmed DCEs of sister districts and municipalities of the region, some constituency and regional executives of the party as well as a large number of the youth of Mafi Adidome.

One of the unique features of the DCE confirmation in the Central Tongu District was the collective decision of the AMs not to accept any financial favours from the nominee before confirming him. The MP for the area, Hon. Alexander Gabby Hottordze, who disclosed this in an address at the event, said the decision by the AMs was for the interest and development of the district.

According to the MP, the only request the AMs made was for the nominee to organize a party for them after the confirmation if he so wished.

The Regional Minister, Hon, James Gunu, who led the government’s team to the ceremony from the Volta Regional Co-ordinating Council (VRCC) at Ho, described the move or gesture by the AMs as highly commendable, saying it was a sign of showing goodwill and love for the total development of the district.

Ms. Edith Lucy Dzormeku also administered the same to Mr. Addison Dodzi Mornyuie after the Electoral Officials declared him as having been duly confirmed by the Assembly Members.

In his confirmation speech, the DCE was very grateful to the AMs, the NDC party as a whole and all its executives, the Regional Minister, party supporters, the youth and ultimately the President, H.E. John Dramani Mahama for the confidence reposed in him.

Hon. Mornyuie said his leadership would be one of inclusion, transparency, discipline, innovation and action. ‘Together, let us fix our schools, promote youth empowerment, invest in roads and sanitation and uphold peace and unity in our communities’, the new DCE intimated.

The MP for the Central Tongu Constituency, Hon. Alexander Gabby Hottordze stressed the need for unity among the rank and file in the constituency. He called for an end to all unhealthy acts such as backbiting and betrayal that can thwart the developmental efforts of the constituency.

Hon. Hottordze urged the party leaders and supporters not only to remain loyal to the party and its vision but also to bid their time to achieve elevation at the opportune and right time.

Ivory Coast, the world’s biggest cocoa producer, could take measures to make the product more expensive if tariffs proposed by U.S. President Donald Trump go into effect, the West African country’s agriculture minister said on Thursday.

The Trump administration last week announced tariffs of 21%, the highest in West Africa, on Ivory Coast as part of higher targeted duties on dozens of countries. On Wednesday Trump announced he was pausing them for 90 days.

Speaking to reporters in Abidjan on Thursday, Agriculture Minister Kobenan Kouassi Adjoumani said his country wanted Washington to reconsider the tariffs.

“When you tax our product that we export to your country, we will increase the price of cocoa and that will have a repercussion on the price to the consumer,” Kouassi said.

It was not immediately clear what specific measures Kouassi was referring to. Ivory Coast does not have the ability to set the price for cocoa, which is determined by the global market.

However, the country could raise export taxes on cocoa to earn more revenue, which would make the product more expensive for consumers.

“It’s the end consumer who will be harmed,” Kouassi said.

Ivory Coast exports between 200,000 and 300,000 metric tons of cocoa to the U.S. each year, according to data from the Coffee and Cocoa Council (CCC).

Kouassi also said Ivory Coast would seek stronger ties with the European Union to ensure that “if our products are not accepted in the United States, the EU can recover all of them.”

Kwahu Easter: 7 reasons everyone is heading to Ghana’s ultimate festival

0

Every Easter, the serene hills of Kwahu in Ghana’s Eastern Region transform into the heartbeat of celebration, drawing revelers, adventurers, and culture lovers from Ghana and beyond.

But what makes Kwahu Easter the unofficial Coachella of Ghana?

Here are 7 reasons why this highland holiday is Ghana’s ultimate festival:

  1. The energy is electric, and it’s for everyone

Kwahu Easter isn’t just an event; it’s a full-body experience. The atmosphere is electric from traditional durbars and uplifting church services to street jams and all-night mbosuo.

The moment you start the ascent into the mountains, you feel it, a buzz in the air, a rhythm in your chest.

It’s in the convoy of cars blasting music, the crowd-packed streets of Obomeng, and the adrenaline-pumping parties at Adom Park.

Whether you’re coming to dance, reflect, hike, or just soak it all in, there’s a vibe for every tribe, from the hypebeasts to the homebodies.

  1. The line-up is always lit!

Every Easter, top-tier Ghanaian artists descend on Kwahu to set the hills on fire with unforgettable performances, from Afrobeats and highlife to gospel and soulful live bands. For many performers, gracing a Kwahu stage is a career milestone. For fans, it’s a front-row seat to greatness.

And it’s not just music. Kwahu’s calendar is packed with cooking competitions, football galas, concerts, and mega parties led by Adom FM.

Add in pop-ups, vendor markets, and brand activations, and you’ve got a town that never sleeps, day or night, there’s always something popping.

  1. The adventure sports are next level

If you’re an adrenaline junkie, this is your playground. From paragliding off the Odweanoma Mountain to hiking, quad biking, or ziplining through lush terrains, Kwahu Easter doubles as an adventure festival that gets your heart racing and your camera roll buzzing.

  1. A cultural showcase like no other

This isn’t just about parties. Kwahu still honors its roots, through durbars hosted by traditional leaders in full regalia, captivating cultural dances, Akan storytelling, and drumming.

It’s a place where heritage meets modern celebration, and pride in identity is on full display.

  1. Business & branding take center stage

For brands, this is prime marketing real estate. Every major Ghanaian label, bank, telco, and beverage brand wants a piece of the Kwahu magic.

Pop-up experiences, influencer activations, giveaways, and promo campaigns turn the hills into a corporate carnival.

  1. Kwahu is Ghana’s unofficial fashion week

The fits are intentional, the colours are loud, and the styles are original. Whether it’s streetwear, kente couture, or fully dripped squad goals, the fashion scene alone deserves its own highlight reel.

Kwahu Easter is where people come to see and be seen.

  1. Networking? Oh, you mean hilltop connections

Whether you’re a creative, entrepreneur, executive, or dreamer, Kwahu Easter is where the plug meets the socket.

It’s not unusual to find yourself networking on a mountaintop, swapping contacts in a hotel lobby, or closing a deal at a live band session. It’s social capital with a view.

BONUS: It’s the ultimate road trip with the crew

Let’s be honest, half the fun is in the journey. The road to Kwahu is filled with anticipation, playlists, snack stops, and laughs. It’s a time to unplug, reset, and reconnect with nature, your people, and yourself.

I slept with my husband’s brother and I can’t get him out of my mind

0

File photo of a worried woman File photo of a worried woman

Dear GhanaWeb,

My husband and I have been married for three years, but we haven’t had kids yet. We decided to take our time as a young couple and focus on building our finances before starting a family. My husband’s brother lives with us temporarily due to a job he secured in our city, so my husband offered to accommodate him for a while.

Recently, we took a family trip out of town to spend a few days together. However, even before the trip, I noticed that my husband’s brother had been giving me strange attention.

Whenever he is around, he’d often act in ways that felt flirtatious, and sometimes, when it was just the two of us, he’d make indirect flirtatious remarks. I never paid much attention to it at first.

During our trip, my husband got busy with something on one of the days, and his brother offered to keep me company.

He suggested taking me to explore a part of the forest, explaining that he had lived in the village for about a year and knew the area well. We chatted as we walked, but eventually, we reached a point where he claimed he didn’t recognize the area, and we ended up getting lost.

We were struggling to find our way back to where we were camped, then he started acting all romantic and caring.

He began talking about how good he could handle me in bed, and he had the courage to grab my breast and kissed me. I was kind of surprised he did that, so I didn’t say anything.

He continued with the romance, and I tried to fight back but the idea of sex in the bush seemed nice to me, so I gave in.

We had sex in the bush and although the feeling was nice, I felt sorry afterwards.

I haven’t really given him a chance to come any closer because I see him like my weakness now. I’m avoiding him and he keeps trying to get closer.

He has been texting me and saying crazy stuffs. I’m always horny when I see his message or himself.

I keep watching his pictures and imagining what we did in the bush but I don’t want to repeat it. I’m scared if my husband should find out, my marriage would be over and I don’t want to divorce my husband because he’s a good man. I want to avoid him completely but it’s becoming harder to handle.

He is driving me crazy and I don’t know what to do.

I don’t get that horny when I’m with my husband. What should I do to forget about my husband’s brother and focus on my husband only?

Godfred Yeboah Dame, former Attorney General and Minister of Justice play videoGodfred Yeboah Dame, former Attorney General and Minister of Justice

A former Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Godfred Yeboah Dame, has expressed dissatisfaction with the adjournment of the hearing for an application aimed at halting the prima facie case determination in the Chief Justice’s impending impeachment process.

The case, filed by Old Tafo MP, Vincent Ekow Assafuah, was scheduled to be heard on Wednesday, April 9.

However, the Supreme Court adjourned the case indefinitely due to the unavailability of state attorneys attending an ECOWAS Court representation training.

Addressing the media after proceedings in court, Godfred Yeboah Dame expressed surprise at the turn of events, describing the AG’s reasons as untenable.

“I find it quite odd for him to say that state attorneys are at a conference and for that matter all the cases in the country should be adjourned. He’s not a state attorney he could not come to court in a case as important as the removal of the Chief Justice; he couldn’t come or extend the courtesy to the court by attending… And what makes it even more odd that they sent state attorneys, not even one but two to inform the court that they’re attending a conference and that they couldn’t attend… I find it as a confirmation of their disregard for the rule of law,” Dame told the media.

Godfred Dame subsequently prayed the court to adjourn the case to Monday, April 14, but his plea was dismissed.

The plaintiff is seeking a Supreme Court declaration that the president’s decision to consult the Council of State on the determination of a prima facie case without first seeking the Chief Justice’s response is unconstitutional.

The court was presided over by Justice Henrietta Mensah Bonsu.

China raises retaliatory tariffs on US imports from 84% to 125%

China has raised its retaliatory tariffs on US imports from 84% to 125%, on Friday, April 11, 2025.

This follows US President Donald Trump’s announcement of a 145% tariff imposition on China.

According to a statement from the spokesperson of the Chinese Commerce Ministry, and available to the CNN, China has no plans to increase its tariffs on US goods beyond 125%.

“The successive imposition of excessively high tariffs on China by the US has become nothing more than a numbers game, with no real economic significance. It merely further exposes the US practice of weaponising tariffs as a tool of bullying and coercion, turning itself into a joke,” the spokesperson said.

The ministry further stated that China won’t continue to engage the US if it insists on pushing numbers game with tariffs.

“If the US persists in substantively harming China’s interests, China will resolutely take countermeasures and fight to the end,” the spokesperson added.

Experts have warned that the unpredictable, stop-start nature of President Donald Trump’s trade policy will likely dampen investment and could slow global economic growth.

Meanwhile, Chinese leader Xi Jinping, in his first public comment on the escalating trade war with the US, has said that China is not afraid of the US.

“There are no winners in a trade war, and going against the world will only lead to self-isolation. Regardless of how the external environment changes, China will remain confident, stay focused, and concentrate on managing its own affairs well,” Xi told Spain’s Prime Minister, Pedro Sanchez, in Beijing.

Samsam residents lament deplorable roads, demand urgent fix

0

Residents of Samsam, a community in the Ga West Municipality, have expressed deep frustration over the poor condition of their roads, which they say has severely affected their daily lives and economic activities.

According to them, the deplorable nature of the roads has not only hindered transportation but also impacted key sectors like education and commerce.

“I have lived here for three years. In this town, our roads are very bad, and due to that, we find it difficult to get a car to our workplace, and that affects us,” said Abigail, a teacher and resident of the community.
She noted that the situation has discouraged teachers posted to the area from staying, leading to challenges in the education sector.

“Most of the teachers who are posted here resist staying in the community due to the poor nature of the road, resulting in difficulties in getting a car, and that affects productivity in the school as well,” she explained.

Speaking on Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily on Friday, April 11, she added, “We are pleading with the government to put the road into good shape for us so that we can have the empathy and the energy to work in the area.” Abigail added.

Drivers who operate in the area also shared similar concerns. Samuel Appiah, who has been driving in the area for nine years, stated that the road has deteriorated significantly over time.

“I have driven on the road for nine years. The road used to be good in the earlier years, but the current state of the road has damaged our cars. Due to that, the drivers find it difficult to ply the road,” he lamented.

He further appealed for urgent government intervention. “We beg the authorities to divert their attention here and construct the road for us because there are students and workers here who come in the morning to pick cars, so if they come and there are no cars available, it’s disturbing,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Assembly Member for the Kono Electoral Area, J.B. Dankwa, acknowledged the ongoing construction efforts but admitted that challenges remain.

“There is a contractor now on the road working, and we are grateful for the intervention of the government. But still, the situation persists, and the number of risks involved is high. People queue up early in the morning to get cars, yet there are no cars available,” he stated.
He also raised concerns about the economic toll on commuters.

“The poor road also amounts to passenger cost. We are also pleading with the government to intervene for the contractors who are on the road to hasten the job, and they shouldn’t just construct the drain; they should complete the road,” he urged.
