The success of historic visit of Czech President will be measured by new military investments, others – Ablakwa

0

Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has described the recent visit of Czech President His Excellency Petr Pavel as a “truly memorable historic 3-day” event that marks a significant milestone in Ghana-Czech relations.

In a post on his official X (formerly Twitter) account, Mr. Ablakwa emphasized that the true success of this diplomatic mission will be reflected in the creation of new industries, advanced technologies, stronger business ties, military support, healthcare infrastructure, and job creation.

Clottey joins pro boxers’ welfare drive

0

Former world welterweight champion, Joshua “The Hitter” Clottey, has thrown his weight behind the newly formed Voice of Professional Boxers Association of Ghana (VPBAG), marking a significant endorsement of a movement aimed at uniting

Ghana’s professional fighters and championing their welfare.

In a symbolic gesture last Wednesday near the historic James Town Police Station in Accra, Clottey was officially inducted into the fraternity, becoming the first of Ghana’s world champions to sign up.

The VPBAG, led by its President and former crowd favourite, Ayitey Powers, is seeking to rally the nation’s professional fighters—past and present—under one umbrella to advocate for their rights, improve livelihoods, and provide support, particularly for struggling or retired boxers.

Clad in a union-branded shirt emblazoned with his name, the former IBF champion pledged his full commitment to the cause.

“I’m a full member now, and I’m fully into this. Boxers need to unite for our good—this will help us,” Clottey said in a widely circulated video. “I’ll attend every meeting. Just call me—I’ll be there”.

Addressing a gathering of young, promising fighters, including WBO Africa titleholders Daniel Selassie Gorsh (bantamweight) and Faisal Abubakari (junior middleweight), Clottey urged them to prove themselves on the local circuit before venturing into the international arena. “You have to test yourselves against the best here in Ghana first. That’s how you truly prepare for the world.”

VPBAG President Ayitey Powers, a former boxer turned promoter, described the association as a long-overdue initiative to safeguard the welfare of the very athletes who are the heartbeat of the sport.

“Boxers are the pillars of everything in this game. Without the boxer, there’s no coach, no promoter, no manager, not even a Boxing Authority,” he declared in an interview with Graphic Sports.

He added that other stakeholders in the sport—coaches, promoters, and even supporters—already had their associations, and it was time boxers also had a unified voice.

“This isn’t the first time a boxing union has been attempted, but those efforts lacked structure and collapsed. When the current fighters approached me and asked me to lead, I knew we had to do it properly.”

Crucially, the VPBAG is not just a symbolic body. It is legally registered with the Registrar-General’s Department and recognised by the Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA), giving it the institutional legitimacy that previous attempts lacked.

“This time, we have the papers. We are official, and we are here to stay,” Powers affirmed.

He expressed the hope that Clottey’s endorsement would encourage other Ghanaian boxing icons—including Azumah Nelson, Ike Quartey, and Joseph Agbeko—to come on board.

“We’re extending an open invitation to all our champions. We’re all boxers, and we must fight not just in the ring, but for the future of our sport.”

Were they drunk or mad on ‘red’? – Mamponghene reacts to Anti-Ashanti comments by NDC supporters

Mamponghene Daasebre Osei Bonsu II Mamponghene Daasebre Osei Bonsu II

The Omanhene of the Mampong Traditional Council, Daasebre Osei Bonsu II, has questioned the actions of some National Democratic Congress (NDC) youth in Mampong who have recently embarked on an open anti-Ashanti campaign.

Addressing some constituency leaders of the party at his palace on Sunday, April 13, 2025, Daasebre Osei Bonsu II questioned whether the youth protesting against the possible nomination of an Ashanti for the Mampong Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) position were intoxicated or high on opioids.

He suggested that the infamous ‘red’ opioid may have fueled the actions of the youth.

“Why are some people, whether they were drunk or high on those red or blue or whatever you call them, so mad that they felt the need to destroy what we all share as a people? And you, the party leaders, feel scared to call them to order. It is not nice; it is very disgraceful,” he condemned.

He issued an ultimatum to the leaders of the party to call their members to order or risk incurring the wrath of the Mampong Traditional Council.

“Advise those in the NDC who put up the despicable act. They have until tomorrow afternoon… If not, we shall shake things up for them to know that we wield the power and the entire jurisdiction,” Daasebre Osei Bonsu fumed.

He noted the tolerant and welcoming nature of Ashantis to diversity, stating that Ashanti remains the only area in Ghana where other tribes are allowed to install their own chiefs.

“Because of my work at the university, I have traveled a lot. There is no place you mention that I don’t know of. But our place is the only place where you find Sarkin Zongo, Ewe Chiefs, and whatnot… You are all Mampong people. We respect and treat everyone as equal, so why are some people trying to cause division among us?” he questioned.

The reaction by Mamponghene is in response to the actions of some NDC youth who have been campaigning against the possible nomination of an Ashanti by President John Dramani Mahama for the MCE position in the area.

Last week, NDC youth in Asante Mampong Constituency protested the rumored nomination of Esther Dwomoh as Municipal Chief Executive (MCE). The youth, favoring three shortlisted candidates—Yakubu Issifu (2024 Parliamentary Candidate), Mohammed Kamil (Constituency Chairman), and Imoro Iddrisu—stormed the party office on April 9 and 10, vandalizing property and setting items ablaze.

They argued the shortlisted trio, long-time party loyalists, deserved the role over Dwomoh, a recent NDC member since 2022.

The group was clear in their demand, stating that “no Ashanti will be allowed to become MCE of Mampong,” a statement that has been heavily condemned as anti-Ashanti and disrespectful to the owners of Mampong land.

Meanwhile, the NDC constituency leadership has apologized, condemned the violence, and urged calm while awaiting President Mahama’s final decision.

Damang Lease: Government must explain rejection reasons

Wisdom Edem Gomashie is a mining consultant Wisdom Edem Gomashie is a mining consultant

A mining consultant, Wisdom Edem Gomashie, has asked the Ministry of

Lands and Natural Resources, and the Minerals Commission to publicly disclose the specific provisions of the Minerals and Mining (Licensing) Regulations, 2012 (L.I. 2176) that formed the basis of the rejection of the renewal of Gold Fields’ Damang Mine lease.

In a release made available to GhanaWeb Business, he posed a series of questions to the government, while noting that the decision to reject the lease sends a wrong signal to the investor community.

Among the things he stated in his release are the following:

1. Was the extension application not submitted 90 days prior to the expiration of the existing lease? A check shows that Gold Fields submitted the extension application in December 2024. What might the situation be?

2. Did the applicants provide any false or misleading information that the regulator has now discovered?

3. Did the applicant refuse to provide information or correct an error under regulation 191(2) within 10 days from the day of notice?

4. Additionally, does the applicant, by operating that specific lease, violate any provisions of the lease or contravene or fail to fulfil certain guarantees outlined in the 2016 Aboso Development Agreement between the Government of Ghana and Gold Fields Ghana Limited?”

Goldfields’ application for an extension of its lease for the Damang Mine has been rejected by the government.

A memo to staff indicated that the current lease will expire on April 18, 2025. However, all efforts to renew it have so far been unsuccessful.

The company is currently engaging with the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources in an attempt to resolve the situation.

The consultant noted that it is already clear from the release that the company has received a rejection notice.

“Therefore, in accordance with Regulation 192(2) of LI 2176, the notification made by the Minerals Commission on behalf of the Minister to the company must be made public. The Minerals Commission’s technical capacity cannot be questioned, especially in recent years, as there has been significant improvement in the delivery of its mandate in the Large-Scale Mining sector,” he said.

In the meantime, Gold Fields has informed its workers to begin preparing for the expiry of the lease.

A Symbol of Elegance and Boldness

The red lace dress has become a timeless wardrobe staple for women, offering an irresistible combination of elegance, boldness, and femininity. Lace, with its intricate patterns and delicate texture, adds a touch of sophistication to any outfit, while the vibrant hue of red symbolizes confidence, passion, and power. Whether for a formal event, a night out, or a special occasion, a red lace style dress exudes a unique blend of grace and allure that makes it a perfect choice for women who want to stand out.

One of the reasons a red lace dress is so popular is its versatility. Red lace dresses come in a variety of cuts and designs, from bodycon silhouettes that hug the figure to flowy A-line or sheath styles that offer a more relaxed look. The versatility in design means that a red lace dress can be worn for a variety of occasions, whether it’s a wedding, cocktail party, or evening gala. A fitted red lace dress, for example, highlights the curves, while a loose or draped design offers a more modest yet still striking appearance.

The beauty of lace lies in its intricate detail, and when paired with the bold color of red, it creates a look that is both eye-catching and sophisticated. Many red lace dresses feature delicate floral patterns, which add a touch of femininity to the bold color. For an extra flair, the lace may be combined with sheer panels or a subtle nude lining that enhances the design and adds an element of sensuality without compromising on class.

The design possibilities for red lace dresses are endless. Off-shoulder or one-shoulder lace dresses add an extra dose of drama and can be perfect for evening events or romantic dinners. For a more modest yet equally stunning look, a high-neck red lace dress can provide a sophisticated and chic option, while still offering the elegant and timeless appeal of lace.

When accessorizing a red lace dress, it’s best to keep things simple and elegant. Opt for neutral or metallic accessories, such as gold or silver jewelry, to allow the dress to take center stage. Pair the dress with classic heels, a sleek clutch, and subtle makeup to complete the polished, refined look.

In conclusion, a red lace style dress is a wardrobe must-have for any woman looking to exude confidence, style, and grace. The combination of bold red and delicate lace makes it a versatile piece that can be worn for various occasions, leaving a lasting impression wherever you go. Whether you’re attending a formal event or a casual gathering, a red lace dress ensures you make a statement while remaining timelessly elegant.

Auto dealers urge govt to scrap ‘obnoxious’ taxes, review port fees

0

The Vehicle and Assets Dealers Union of Ghana (VADUG) has urged the government to accelerate the implementation of a comprehensive auto financing policy that enables banks and financial institutions to extend credit facilities to vehicle buyers.

The union also raised concerns over excessive port taxes, criticizing the Ghana Revenue Authority’s Customs Division for imposing what they describe as burdensome charges on vehicle importers and consumers.

“If you’re a customer clearing a vehicle at the port, be prepared to pay over twenty different fees,” VADUG noted, citing a long list of charges such as Import Duty, Import VAT, the GHS Disinfection Fee, COVID-19 Health Recovery Levy, Vehicle Examination Fees, and the African Union Import Levy.

In addition to insurance and freight costs, importers are required to pay taxes based on the first purchase price of the original model year—regardless of the vehicle’s actual purchase year.

Vehicles older than five years attract an extra 50% penalty based on the original value, while brand-new vehicles under six months old are exempt from depreciation-related penalties.

Speaking to the media, VADUG Executive Secretary Frank Atanley Kofigah described the port fees as “obnoxious taxes” that need urgent review.

“Now when you go in there, we have the GHS Disinfection Fee and the Special Import Levy. That 2% levy—what is it even doing there? It was meant for a specific purpose. Is that purpose still relevant? We need to interrogate these charges,” Kofigah said.

He emphasized the need for an accessible vehicle financing framework, citing global examples where consumers can walk into dealerships and secure vehicles with little or no upfront payment—provided they have valid employment and bank statements.

“In other countries, if you’re working, you can walk into a dealership with zero dollars and a proper appointment letter, and still drive out with a financed car. Why not here?” he questioned.

The Importers and Exporters Association of Ghana has backed VADUG’s call for a national vehicle financing scheme. The Association believes such a policy would reduce the country’s reliance on older, high-emission vehicles and promote the purchase of newer, more efficient models.

Executive Secretary of the Association, Samson Asaki Awingobit, said, “Until the government proposes a policy that allows both public and private workers to walk into an auto dealership, pay a 15–30% deposit, and spread the balance over a few years, driving will remain a luxury for many.”

Ghana keeps 2025/2026 cocoa price unchanged despite Côte d’Ivoire’s raise

0

Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) has said that the price paid to farmers for cocoa will stay the same for the 2025/2026 season.

This decision comes even though cocoa prices have changed in some areas and the global market remains unstable.

In a letter dated April 8 and sent to the Licensed Cocoa Buyers’ Association of Ghana (LICOBAG), COCOBOD explained that the decision was made after carefully reviewing the cocoa sector’s current financial and operational situation.

Gov’t backs SMEs with $300k to fight plastic waste

0

The government has sought the support of Small and Medium Enterprises to help tackle the country’s growing waste management challenges, particularly plastic waste.

The initiative includes providing financial assistance and grants to SMEs engaged in recycling and other waste management ventures, aimed at promoting a circular economy and creating jobs.

Minister for Environment, Science and Technology, Mohammed Murtala, who oversaw the disbursement of about $300, 000 to each of the 10 SMEs, said the government will strictly monitor the initiative.

“We should all be conscious and monitor how the monies will be utilised. I do not need a dollar or a cedi from you. You need to use the money for the intended purpose, and I will be doing the monitoring because this is just the first tranche,” he stated.

Gabon coup leader wins election by huge margin

0

Gabon’s military leader Gen Brice Oligui Nguema – who in 2023 led a coup that ended a near-60-year dynasty – has won Saturday’s presidential election with more than 90% of the vote, provisional results show.

Ahead of the vote, critics argued that the new constitution and electoral code were designed to give Oligui Nguema a comfortable pathway to the top job.

Some opposition heavyweights who could have posed a serious political challenge were excluded from the race.

His election victory consolidates his grip on power, nearly two years after he masterminded the demise of President Ali Bongo, whose family had been in power in Gabon since 1967.

Oligui Nguema, 50, faced seven other candidates, including former Prime Minister Alain Claude Bilie-by-Nze, who served under the Bongo regime, and two stalwarts of the former ruling PDG party, Stéphane Germain Iloko and Alain Simplice Boungouères.

“Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema is elected [president] by absolute majority of votes cast, with 575,222 votes,” Interior Minister Hermann Immongault announced.

His main challenger, Bilie-by-Nze, received just over 3% of the votes.

More than seven out of 10 registered voters took part in the poll, which the authorities and some observers hailed as signifying the election took place transparently and peacefully.

There were complaints of instances of irregularities in the process, however.

At some polling stations the vote was delayed, while some voters on the electoral roll were not able to find where they were meant to cast their ballot.

Bilie-by-Nze said he was particularly concerned by claims that in some places unmarked ballot papers were not kept in a secure location, and that he feared they could be used to stuff ballot boxes.

Oligui Nguema’s victory brings him a seven-year mandate and the resources to tackle the corruption and bad governance that characterised the Bongos’ time in power.

The highly articulate former commander of the elite Republican Guard proved to be very popular among a population relieved to be rid of dynastic rule, promising to rid the country of the ill that had tainted Gabon’s image.

The small oil- and timber-rich central African nation is home to just 2.5 million people.

Despite its resources, about 35% of the population still live below the poverty line of $2 (£1.50) a day.

‘This is not Mahama’s tone’ – Senyo Hosi criticises ‘showmanship’ in attempted Ntim Fordjour’s arrest

0

A former CEO of the Chamber of Bulk Oil Distributors, Senyo Hosi, has condemned what he describes as unnecessary “grandstanding” in the recent attempt to arrest an MP over allegations of suspicious aircraft activities in Ghana.

The policy analyst warned that such actions do not reflect the leadership tone of President Mahama or the maturity of Ghana’s democratic journey.

Speaking on Joy News’ Newsfile on Saturday, Senyo Hosi questioned the judgment behind what appeared to be a dramatic enforcement response to the yet-unsubstantiated claims made by the Ranking Member of Parliament’s Defence Committee, Rev. John Ntim Fordjour.

“Did we really need to have that grandstanding trying to arrest the man?” Senyo Hosi quizzed.

“I think that our democracy has moved on. This showmanship was not necessary. It’s not reflective of the tone of the President. It’s not reflective of the maturity that we’ve attained.”

Rev. Ntim Fordjour had alleged that aircrafts carrying “suspicious content” had landed in Ghana, implying illicit cargo possibly involving narcotics or money laundering.

While the MP is yet to provide evidence, his claims triggered significant public interest and a response from national security agencies, culminating in what many saw as an overly dramatic attempt to apprehend him for questioning.

Senyo Hosi, however, argued that such a move was not only avoidable but damaging to the democratic and civic culture Ghana is trying to build.

“All we needed to do was wait for the report,” he insisted.

“Should Ntim Fordjour cooperate with the agency? I think Article 4, Section 41 is very clear about that — we are supposed to collaborate with our law enforcement agencies.”

He acknowledged that public trust in government processes could be fragile, especially in a polarized environment.

“He [Ntim Fordjour] will tell you that because of government’s communication, he lost trust in the process. I can respect that to a certain extent,” Senyo Hosi said.

But he quickly added that the way forward must be rooted in institutional process and mutual respect, not public spectacle or political brinkmanship.

“Today, I think this matter should be put to proper rest by all the key parties involved,” he urged.

Suspected carjacking kingpin was selling each stolen car for GH¢4,000

Nana Anderson is alleged to be a ringleader of a carjacking syndicate Nana Anderson is alleged to be a ringleader of a carjacking syndicate

Following the recent arrest of Nana Anderson, a 37-year-old suspected leader of a vehicle theft syndicate, the Greater Accra Regional Police Command has disclosed that the accused was selling each stolen vehicle for GH¢4,000.

Anderson, who also goes by aliases such as Anderson Nana Abeka, Essel Kofi Elvis, and Willson Kojo Bismark, was apprehended on April 5, 2025, at his hideout in Atasamanso, Kumasi, Ashanti Region.

Police investigations revealed that on March 25, 2025, Anderson fraudulently rented a Hyundai Elantra, registered as GT 114-25, using forged ECOWAS identity and driver’s license cards with different names but his photograph.

He disabled the vehicle’s tracking system and failed to return it, prompting further scrutiny.

According to the police, Anderson, upon his arrest, admitted to the thefts, revealing that he was part of a syndicate operating between January and March 2025.

The group allegedly stole multiple vehicles, including a Kia Forte, a Honda Civic, a Kia Ultima at Spintex, and another in the Greater Accra region, each sold for GH¢4,000.

Anderson led police to a hideout in Millennium City, where the stolen Hyundai Elantra was recovered.

His accomplice, Gideon Baah, also known as Nana, remains at large. The suspect has been arraigned before the court, and efforts continue to apprehend Baah to assist with the investigation.

The Ghana Police Service affirmed that it is working to dismantle the syndicate and recover additional stolen vehicles.

GH¢32.5 billion COCOBOD debt saved Ghana’s cocoa sector

0

A former Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD), Joseph Boahen Aidoo, has offered justifications for the policies and decisions that defined his administration.

In an exclusive interview, Boahen Aidoo addressed the GH¢32.5 billion debt incurred by successive governments, describing it not as a mark of mismanagement but as a consequence of strategic interventions aimed at safeguarding Ghana as a force to reckon with in the cocoa industry.

He admitted that though his administration also incurred debt, the move was meant to save the country’s cocoa sector from collapse.

“We inherited a lot of challenges. In fact, when I took over COCOBOD in 2017, my management team had no money for the 2017-2018 cocoa season. The previous administration had fully utilised the US$1.8 billion syndicated loans and only achieved an average FOB price of US$2900. The last drawdown of about US$300 million from the US$1.8 billion syndicated loan amount occurred in the middle of December, 2016 when the NDC had lost the elections.

“So, by December 31, 2016, the full amount of US$1.8 billion had been utilised and the new administration had to look for money for the cocoa purchases and some operational expenses in the remaining nine months of the 2016-2017 crop year. So, if history is fair, it will remember us not for incurring a debt but for shielding Ghana’s cocoa industry from total collapse,” he said.

He added; “We chose to act. We chose to protect the farmers, the supply chain and the country’s economic future—even when it meant walking into the storm.”

Depleted institution

Boahen Aidoo also recalled taking over a financially depleted institution in 2017 while inheriting the GH¢1.8 billion syndicated loan from the previous administration despite actual cocoa deliveries falling short of projections.

“Only 611,763 metric tonnes had been secured by December 2016, well below the 900,000 tonnes anticipated”, he revealed.

“We inherited empty coffers.”

“There were no funds to purchase cocoa or pay farmers and we faced urgent financial obligations to suppliers amid a 30% drop in world cocoa prices. We had to act swiftly or risk losing total control of the industry”, he added.

Cocoa Bills

Aidoo’s administration turned to cocoa bills—short-term, high-interest instruments that raised over GH¢2.2 billion.

The funds were channelled into critical purchases of over 355,000 tonnes of cocoa, payments to Licensed Buying Companies (LBCs), logistics and the settlement of outstanding debts for chemicals and fertilizers.

“It’s disingenuous to suggest our debt was reckless,” he asserted, further stressing “it was an investment in continuity. Without it, Ghana’s cocoa sector would have come to a standstill”.

Economic scope

The former COCOBOD boss urged stakeholders to consider COCOBOD’s size and revenue-generating capacity when discussing its debt profile.

As of February 2025, cocoa purchases had exceeded 560,000 tonnes, valued at approximately GH¢45 billion based on Free On Board (FOB) pricing, he noted.

“People talk about debt but ignore revenue. COCOBOD consistently earns over $2 billion in annual cocoa receipts. With structured financing, it has the capacity to meet its obligations”, he averred.

Ending syndicated borrowing

One of the most consequential reforms during Aidoo’s tenure was COCOBOD’s decision to forgo syndicated loans in the 2024/25 season—a move that marked a dramatic shift in cocoa financing after 32 years of external borrowing.

Contrary to speculation that Ghana had been disqualified from syndicated funding, Aidoo revealed that financial institutions had, in fact, offered more favourable terms.

He emphasised that COCOBOD still chose to chart an independent course.

“We said no. For the first time in decades, we walked away from the dependency model and took control of our financing. That’s not weakness, that’s sovereignty”, he further asserted.

Under the new model, LBCs procure cocoa which is sold by the Cocoa Marketing Company (CMC) to global firms through forward contracts.

Payments are made in U.S. dollars via Ghana International Bank and converted into cedis through the Bank of Ghana before being remitted to COCOBOD.

The approach has saved Ghana an estimated $150 million in interest and related fees this year alone.

Growing threat

Despite gains in financial autonomy, Boahen Aidoo warned of a growing threat posed by cocoa smuggling, particularly following Côte d’Ivoire’s recent 22.24% increase in producer prices.

The disparity, he noted, has rendered cocoa farming across the border more lucrative, tempting Ghanaian farmers to sell their beans illegally.

“We estimate that over 120,000 tonnes of cocoa, worth around $600 million—could be smuggled out before any syndicated facility even arrives. The warning signs are already here.”

The situation, he added, is worsened by COCOBOD’s recent decision to eliminate incentives for whistleblowers and law enforcement officers—a policy that previously deterred illicit trade.

“That decision is not just ill-advised, it’s dangerous.”

“We’ve removed the tools that helped us protect this vital industry.”

Leadership beyond politics

He concluded with a direct appeal to national leadership, urging a bipartisan commitment to safeguarding Ghana’s cocoa sector.

“This is not about political parties. It’s about the livelihoods of over 800,000 cocoa farmers, about national pride, food security and economic justice. When the Ivorian market shifts, we must respond decisively. Delay is a luxury we cannot afford”, he noted.

Aidoo insisted that his administration’s actions were necessary, even if unpopular, stating “we took difficult decisions, not because they were easy but because they were necessary. That is what leadership demands.”

Prof Jane Naana Is Calling For Resignation As VP Over Spiritual Attacks – Okatakyie Afrifa Alleges

0

The political atmosphere in Ghana is heating up as shocking claims emerge about the health and future of Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang. Popular media personality, Okatakyie Afrifa, has alleged that the Vice President is seriously considering resigning from her position due to what he describes as spiritual attacks.

Speaking on his show “For The Record,” Okatakyie Afrifa claimed that Prof Naana Jane fell ill recently, and after the incident, a prophet visited her. According to the prophet, if she does not step down, she could face the same fate as the late President Atta Mills and his former Vice President, Amissah-Arthur, who both passed away while serving the country.

The prophet allegedly warned her that her situation was spiritual, not just medical. Okatakyie added that this revelation has caused great concern among her family members. He claims that her children are now urging her to resign immediately for the sake of her life.

Although these claims have not been officially confirmed by Prof Jane Naana or her office, they have raised a lot of discussions on social media and within political circles. Many are wondering whether she is truly under spiritual attack or if this is just a political distraction.

The Vice President is currently on a medical break and is said to be recovering. However, her silence on the matter is making people more curious.

Ghanaians are waiting to hear directly from Prof Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang or the government to confirm or deny these shocking allegations. Until then, the public can only hope that she is safe, healthy, and not under any form of spiritual threat.

The auction recorded a modest oversubscription rate of 2.81%, with the government surpassing its target by GH¢66.21 million. However, GH¢121.7 million worth of bids were rejected.

Yields on all tenors continued to trend downward, albeit slightly. The 91-day bill dropped by 20 basis points to 15.45%, the 182-day bill eased to 16.21% from 16.50%, and the 364-day bill declined by 18 basis points to 18.65%.

President Tinubu is best father to Seyi, but worst president of Nigeria

Nigerian rapper and activist Eedris Abdulkareem has said his controversial new song Tell Your Papa is not a personal attack on Seyi Tinubu, son of President Bola Tinubu, but a direct response to the younger Tinubu’s public praise of his father.

In March 2025, during an event in Yola, Adamawa State, Seyi Tinubu declared President Tinubu “the greatest president in the history of Nigeria,” a remark that sparked public debate and inspired Abdulkareem’s latest release.

The Only SHS In Ghana To Produce Three Presidents

0

Some senior high schools (SHS) in Ghana have produced many important people, including presidents. But only one SHS has produced three presidents in Ghana’s history. That school is Achimota School.

Achimota School is a well-known boarding school for both boys and girls. It is located in Achimota, a town in Accra, the capital city of Ghana. The school was founded in 1924 by three people, Sir Frederick Gordon Guggisberg, Dr. James Emman Kwegyir Aggrey, and Reverend Alec Garden Fraser. It was officially opened in 1927 by Sir Gordon Guggisberg, who was then the Governor of the Gold Coast (now Ghana). The school followed the British public school style and was the first to admit both boys and girls in the country.

Achimota School has trained many important African leaders. Some of the past students include Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, Edward Akufo-Addo, Jerry John Rawlings, and John Evans Atta Mills, who all became leaders of Ghana. John Dramani Mahama, another former President, also attended primary school at Achimota. In addition, Dr. Kofi Abrefa Busia, a former Prime Minister of Ghana, once taught at the school.

Here are the three Presidents of Ghana who went to Achimota School:

1. Edward Akufo-Addo

He was born on June 26, 1906, in Dodowa. He went to school in Akropong and later attended Achimota College. He got a scholarship to study in the United Kingdom at Oxford University, where he studied philosophy and politics and graduated with honors.

2. Jerry John Rawlings

He was born on June 22, 1947, in Accra. His mother was from Keta, and his father was a British man. He studied at Achimota School and later trained at a military academy. He met his wife, Nana Konadu Agyeman, while at Achimota.

3. John Evans Atta Mills

He had his early education at Huni Valley and Komenda Methodist schools. He later went to Achimota School for secondary education and then to the University of Ghana to study law.

President Mahama launches Feed Ghana Programme

0

The government has unveiled a new agriculture initiative dubbed “Feed Ghana Programme” to facilitate a transformation of the country’s agricultural sector.

The initiative seeks to boost agricultural production to feed the population, provide raw materials to feed agro-processing factories and create jobs for the teeming youth.

It involves sub-projects on vegetables, grains, poultry, oil palm, tubers and other import substitutes to reduce the country’s reliance on imports and transition into an export-heavy economy.

Launched by President John Dramani Mahama in Techiman in the Bono East Region last Saturday, the agriculture intervention is expected to play a crucial role in transforming the country’s agricultural landscape, providing support to farmers to increase production and boost the country’s food systems.

Importation

President Mahama explained that the initiative was crucial because it would reduce the country’s over-reliance on food imports, which currently exceeded $2 billion annually, a situation that posed significant risks to economic stability and exposed the country to external market fluctuations and currency instability.

He said challenges such as inadequate infrastructure, limited access to financing, and inefficient farming techniques continued to hinder the growth of Ghana’s agricultural sector, and that the initiative would work towards increasing local raw material production for animal feed manufacturing, ensuring a stable supply of agricultural products for industrial use.

He said the programme would ensure stronger linkages between smallholder farmers and commercial farmers to facilitate a win-win relationship for input access, technical support and a guaranteed market, among others.

Holistic approach

President Mahama said the government would take a holistic approach to transform agriculture through modernisation, with special emphasis on value chain approaches to improve service delivery.

He said the country needed to urgently work towards translating Ghana’s agricultural potential into real sustainable progress to feed Ghanaians, create jobs and increase income.

“The time has come for bold and decisive actions; we must no longer treat agriculture as an afterthought. Agriculture must be placed at the centre of our national economic transformation.

“In this spirit, my government is rolling out the Feed Ghana Programme under the broader theme of Agriculture for Economic Transformation Agenda (AETA). This is a comprehensive vision to modernise and expand agriculture to create jobs, reduce food inflation, and strengthen food security,” he said.

President Mahama said the initiative was anchored on deliberate actions to boost food production, promote modern farm practices, strengthen infrastructure, and develop agro-industrial zones across the country.

Food security

The main objective of the project is to enhance food security, alleviate poverty among farmers, attract young people and women to venture into agriculture, and stabilise food prices across the country.

Under the programme, the government is expected to establish farmers’ service centres, create farm banks, promote crop cultivation, support urban farming, revitalise the poultry industry, and increase local raw material production to feed agro-processing factories.

The government’s flagship programme will focus on commodities such as maize, rice, soya bean, tomato, onions and chilli pepper, as well as cassava, plantain and yam.

Other industrial crops of key priority under the initiative are cocoa, mango, rubber, coconut, shea, coffee, cashew, oil palm, ginger and cotton.

The initiative also focuses on putting a premium on livestock industries such as poultry, cattle, sheep, goats and pigs.

Vital commodities

President Mahama said the implementation of the programme would maximise food production, nutrition and the use of smart agricultural systems to improve self-reliance.

He explained that the establishment of farmer service centres across the country would provide mechanisation services, quality inputs, finance market access and training of farmers, among other essential services.

The President said the creation of farm banks in designated zones would support young agriculture entrepreneurs and enhance national food production.

Under the broad initiative, he said the government would also implement the Grains and Legumes Project, explaining that the government would scale up the production of maize, rice, soya bean and sorghum for consumption, agro-processing and export.

Poultry

The President lamented that the country imported almost $400 million worth of chicken annually, and mentioned another key component of the initiative as the Poultry Industry Revitalisation Programme to address the situation.

“This we all must be ashamed of,” he said.

President Mahama said the programme would be implemented in collaboration with the Poultry Farmers’ Association to increase production.

Under the programme, he said, the government would support hatcheries, feed mills, veterinary services and poultry processing centres to boost sustainable poultry production.

The President said this year, the government would register 50 anchor farmers to be supported to produce four million birds, equivalent to 10,000 metric tonnes of chicken.

Additionally, he said, the supplementary programme would involve the registration of 55,000 households across the country.

President Mahama said each of the households would produce 500 birds annually, expressing the hope that more than one million birds would be produced yearly to improve food nutrition and the incomes of women.

“We believe that this would rear over one million birds and thereby improve the incomes of women and the nutrition of their children,” he said.

He said the government had also placed priority on vegetable production, where households and institutions would be encouraged to grow vegetables and other foodstuffs to enhance nutrition and increase self-reliance. He thus encouraged students and the youth to view agriculture as a career.

Palm oil

President Mahama said the launch would also introduce a National Palm Oil Industry policy to provide strategic incentives across the value chain from cultivation to export.

He said the government would develop agro-processing zones with irrigation, roads, power and warehouses to attract private investment to boost production and processing of the agricultural produce.

“The policy aims to address Ghana’s consumption deficit, promote commercial plantations, and position the country competitively in the global palm oil market,” he said.

Embrace

The Minister of Food and Agriculture, Eric Opoku, called on Ghanaians to embrace the initiative to improve the country’s agricultural sector and the economy.

He explained that the country spent a huge sum of money to import tomatoes from Burkina Faso and onions from Niger, as well as pepper, maize and rice from other countries, which could be produced in excess in the country.

He said the country was blessed with fertile lands and rivers to support the production of food items to feed the country, including its agro-processing factories.

The Bono East Regional Minister, Francis Owusu Antwi, said the region was the best choice for the launch of the intervention because it was one of the food baskets of the country.

He said the region offered the greatest opportunity for the future of the country’s agriculture.

Seventeen-year-old Gout Gout won the Australian 200m title and broke the 20-second barrier with a wind-assisted performance in Perth.

He crossed the line in 19.84 seconds – 0.2secs faster than his own national record, but it was not official record because of a wind speed of +2.2 metres per second.

Gout became the second fastest under-20 200m sprinter in history in all conditions – behind American Erriyon Knighton, who clocked 19.49 at the LSU Invitational in 2022.

“Top speed is my gift. I used it, took off and I got sub-20, so I couldn’t be happier,” said Gout, who ran a legal 20.21 in the heats.

“I’ve been chasing getting that sub-10, focusing on my first 100, and that’s exactly what I did. Feels pretty good.”

Gout won the Under-20 100m title on Friday in 9.99, also with a tailwind above the permitted limit. –BBC

Following her post indicating positive improvement in her husband’s condition, Miracle Adoma, the wife of Ghanaian broadcaster Kofi Adomah, has shared a video of the journalist taking unaided steps.

The broadcaster, who has been battling to regain his eyesight after being shot in the face with gunpowder, is seen walking on the streets of North Carolina with his wife and a relative, who let go of his hands for a brief moment.

“All right, thank you,” Kofi Adomah, who was wearing dark sunglasses, is heard saying after taking about two dozen steps unaided.

“Thanks to the US medical system and thanks to my family in the US,” was the caption shared along with the video by Miracle Adoma, who has stood strong by her husband since January 15, 2025, when he sustained a serious eye injury while covering the Kwafie Festival and the 25th anniversary of the Dormaahene’s enstoolment at Dormaa Ahenkro in the Bono Region.

Initial reports suggested the injury resulted from gunpowder residue or pellets during a traditional musketry display, but his wife, Miracle Adoma, later clarified that an individual deliberately shot him in the face.

The incident led to partial vision loss in one eye.

Prior to her recent update, Kofi Adomah had undergone multiple surgeries in Dubai and was still recovering, with his wife indicating that her husband had been scheduled for further surgeries.

Ghanaian forward Emmanuel Boateng continued his impressive form in the Turkish Super League, scoring his third goal of the season in Gaziantep’s 2-1 win over Hatayspor on Sunday.

The visitors struck first through veteran Cameroonian striker Vincent Aboubakar, who exfoliated the scoring in the 38th minute with a clinical finish.

However, Boateng responded just before halftime, pouncing on a loose ball in the box to level the score for Gaziantep and send the home fans into celebration.

Gaziantep came out stronger in the second half and found the winner in the 59th minute, thanks to a composed strike from Halil Dervisoglu.

Both sides had several chances throughout the game, but Gaziantep held firm to secure all three points at home.

Boateng, who joined Gaziantep mid-season from Saudi Arabian side Al Orubah, has now netted three goals in 10 appearances for the club, underlining his growing influence in the squad as they push to finish the campaign strongly.

The drama began when Abena Moet appeared on a radio segment and made a bold statement that quickly caught fire on social media:

“I’ll marry Jim Iyke, smash Tinny, and sh00t Shatta Wale.”

As expected, her remarks didn’t sit well with fans of the dancehall artiste—and certainly not with Shatta Wale himself. Known for never backing down from a challenge or clapback, Shatta Wale took to his social media platforms to address the situation in his signature no-holds-barred style.

He posted:

“Because your pppssy smells so you will sh00t me… Madam wutsw3 b)n? Dem f$$ck you saaaa, we know your story… F00lish u,gly Litch…”

I Have the Passport, But I Chose to Remain in Ghana—Mussa Dankwah Rejects Brain Drain Temptation

News Hub Creator1h

Mussa Dankwah is not going anywhere.

In a rousing Facebook post defending his commitment to Ghana and Global InfoAnalytics, the pollster declared:

“I have the qualifications and experience to work anywhere in the world and a passport to guarantee me free movement but I chose to remain in Ghana.”

It’s a sentiment that hits home in a country where many of its brightest minds leave for greener pastures. But not Dankwah. He’s chosen country over comfort, mission over migration.

“I left a good job to settle back home and I am not going back,” he adds.

His tone reflects resolve—an unshakable belief in the role of data, transparency, and public opinion in strengthening Ghana’s democracy. With political polarization at its peak, Dankwah’s staying power is a statement in itself: committed citizens can make a difference, even when the system is flawed.

Critics may question his intent, but Dankwah doesn’t flinch. His response is personal, patriotic, and powerfully plainspoken.

While some may flee Ghana’s chaos, Dankwah plants his feet firmer. Global InfoAnalytics, he insists, isn’t just visiting the scene—it’s part of the scene, and here to stay.

Posting New Photo Won’t Change The Fact That You’ve Not Practiced Law For Over 15 Years- Sarpong

0

Political commentator affiliated with the New Patriotic Party P.K Sarpong has taken a swipe at former Electoral Commission boss Charlotte Osei for uploading new photo wearing his law custom ahead of her appointment as a Supreme Court judge. According to P.K Sarpong, the photo is a way for Charlotte Osei to communicate that she still practise law.

However, he indicated that the photo alone cannot change the fact that Charlotte Osei has not practiced law for over 15 years.

Taking to his Facebook page, P.K Sarpong wrote:

Charlotte Osei, has just posted this picture as her profile. As I mentioned it to you, John Mahama OWES her, and must pacify her with an appointment to the Law Lords and Ladies. All hail John Mahama’s nominee to the Supreme Court, a person who hasn’t practiced law for over 15 years, Char Osei!

Lest I forget, JM nominated her for the Supreme Court in the past and she was flatly rejected by the Council. He then appointed her to NCCE for a while before making her EC’s Chairperson.

We all saw her stewardship at the helm of affairs as far as the Electoral Commission was concerned. Her insufferable arrogance coupled with her bossy attitude downed her work.

Today, this same person whose procurement breaches did her in is being promoted to the Supreme Court of the land. At all cost, according to Mahama, Charlotte Osei must be appointed to the Supreme Court. This is the true meaning of the reset they promised.

Make no mistake. She posted this picture to dispel the fact that she hasn’t been practicing law for ages. It is true that she hasn’t practiced law for over 15 years. This changes nothing.

‘I use my own car for funerals’ – Prof Gyampo rejects CEO privilege amid austerity drive

0

The newly appointed Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Shippers Authority (GSA) has laid bare a philosophy of leadership grounded in austerity, modesty, and a deliberate rejection of extravagance.

Professor Ransford Yaw Gyampo told Joy News amid growing public concern about the perks and privileges enjoyed by public officials, said he uses what he described as his “commonsensical approach” to leadership — one that includes driving his personal car to funerals and weddings.

“I was offered an old vehicle which I use only to and from work,” Prof Gyampo said. “I drive my own car to church, funerals, weddings and to all social gatherings. Government vehicles must only be used for government business.”

This unorthodox approach to public office, especially at the CEO level, he stated, comes against the backdrop of financial constraints at the Ghana Shippers Authority.

According to Gyampo, the Authority became cash-strapped after government swept excess funds from various agencies to meet sovereign obligations.

“Through this initiative, the financial resources and monies saved by the Ghana Shippers Authority were swept away,” he explained.

“So as CEO, I had to offer an innovative response to cut expenditure to ensure that the organisation survives.”

Among his first actions was to cancel and renegotiate contracts, suspend staff allowances, and halt all foreign travel not directly tied to the Authority’s core operations.

But perhaps most striking is his personal example, which includes flying economy class on official international assignments.

“I believe I am the only CEO in Ghana at the moment who travels abroad with an economy class ticket,” he said.

“I do so because the current financial position of my organisation makes it unethical and unthinkable for me to be opulent.”

He added, “CEOs and managers of organizations that run at a loss must have no business enjoying the largess that goes with their positions.”

Prof. Gyampo’s rejection of privilege is shaped by his identity as a teacher, unionist, and a man of modest upbringing.

“Though by the grace of God and through hard work, I was living comfortably even before I was appointed as CEO, my modest background and the kind of training I got have tended to shape what I do.”

He also took a swipe at critics who accused him of misusing public funds.

“That’s why I described as senseless and ignorant propaganda, the claim that I had gone to buy a massaging chair in my office in spite of all that I am doing to save money and cut costs,” he said.

“Competent and effective propaganda is not for little minds.”

Asserting his commitment to national service above partisan interests, Prof Gyampo praised President Mahama for appointing non-party individuals like himself and vowed to help “reset Ghana.”

“If we succeed, Ghana will succeed,” he said. “And insha Allah, we would succeed, given the kind of commonsensical approach we are adopting in handling simple problems. We won’t countenance people’s sense of entitlement to perpetuate what is wrong. We will change the status quo.”

Four suspected armed robbers have been shot dead by police during a fierce gun battle on the Bekwai-Fomena Highway in the Ashanti Region.

The incident occurred after the gang reportedly mounted a roadblock and attacked travellers between Bekwai and Fomena, an area which has seen a surge in highway robberies in recent times.

According to police sources, the suspects are believed to be part of a larger gang terrorising residents and commuters within the Adansi enclave.

The swift response by security forces followed multiple distress calls from victims of the attack. Upon arrival, the police exchanged fire with the armed men, resulting in the deaths of four of the suspects.

In an interview on Channel One TV on Saturday, April 12, Trendy shared insights into styling some of Africa’s top music stars.

“We can’t count the costumes in Sarkodie’s wardrobe. His Air Force Ones, for instance—he doesn’t repeat them. He has a room full of trainers,” she said.

Trendy also expressed concern about the trend of artists throwing expensive clothing into the audience during performances.

As a stylist and fashion enthusiast, she finds such actions upsetting.

“Some of these clothes are very expensive. If custom-made, they can cost between £8,000 and £10,000. But it’s part of the artists’ lifestyle, and they don’t see anything wrong with it. For a stylist like me, though, it’s frustrating,” she explained.

She recounted an incident from Sarkodie’s 2022 Rapperholic concert.

“Sarkodie had this red jacket. He took it off and threw it into the crowd. I kid you not—that jacket was probably worth £3,000 or £4,000,” she recalled.

Mamponghene Daasebre Osei Bonsu II Mamponghene Daasebre Osei Bonsu II

The Ashanti Mampong Traditional Council, led by the Mamponghene, Daasebre Osei Bonsu II, has given leadership of the party in the Mampong Constituency less than 24 hours to ensure the retraction of anti-Ashanti comments made by some youth of the party.

Addressing the NDC leadership of the constituency at his palace on Sunday, April 13, 2025, when they called on him, Mamponghene condemned the actions of the party supporters who have waged an open campaign against the possible nomination of an Ashanti for the Mampong Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) position.

“Because of my work at the university, I have travelled a lot.

Last week, NDC youth in Asante Mampong Constituency protested the rumoured nomination of Esther Dwomoh as Municipal Chief Executive (MCE). The youth, favouring three shortlisted candidates—Yakubu Issifu (2024 Parliamentary Candidate), Mohammed Kamil (Constituency Chairman), and Imoro Iddrisu—stormed the party office on April 9 and 10, vandalizing property and setting items ablaze.

Ghana withdraws from Africa Hockey Cup over financial challenges

The tournament will now feature only seven men’s teams and six women’s teams The tournament will now feature only seven men’s teams and six women’s teams

Ghana’s U-21 men’s and women’s hockey teams have pulled out of the upcoming Junior Africa Cup (JAC 2024), set to take place in Windhoek, Namibia, from April 18 to 25, 2025, due to financial constraints.

The decision marks another missed opportunity for Ghana to return to competitive junior-level international hockey, following its last participation in 2010.

Back then, the U-17 team won the continental tournament and represented Africa at the Youth Olympic Games.

The U-21 level serves as a crucial stepping stone for young athletes, bridging the gap between youth programs and senior national teams.

It provides a platform to refine skills, build international experience, and prepare for the demands of the global stage. Without this opportunity, Ghana risks stagnation in its hockey development pipeline.

With Ghana’s withdrawal, the tournament will feature only seven men’s and six women’s teams.

This adjustment will impact both the event’s structure and diminish opportunities for young Ghanaian athletes to gain international exposure.

The JAC 2024 will proceed as planned, with the remaining teams competing for qualification spots in India’s 2025 Junior World Cup.

Hearts took the lead in the 38th minute through defender Kelvin Osei Asibey Hearts took the lead in the 38th minute through defender Kelvin Osei Asibey

Vision FC and Hearts of Oak produced a thrilling 1-1 draw on Sunday afternoon at the Nii Adjei Kraku II Sports Complex in Tema Newtown, in a game that demonstrated the Ghana Premier League’s Round 27 competitive zeal.

The visitors, Hearts, took the lead in the 38th minute through defender Kelvin Osei Asibey.

Arriving highest from a set-piece, Asibey headed the ball over the Vision goalkeeper to give the Phobians a narrow advantage at the interval.

The advantage, however, did not last. Just three minutes into the second half, Vision responded through Meschack Sowah Adjetey, who netted with a composed finish following persistent pressure from the home side.

This determination infused more passion into Vision’s performance, and they looked the more threatening of the two teams as the game progressed in the second half.

Substitute Emmanuel Akansase nearly turned the score in Vision’s favour with a 60th-minute charge, but his low shot in the box brushed against the post and went narrowly wide.

The first half was well-balanced, but Vision appeared sharper in the second half.

Hearts will rue another away match without a win, while Vision will feel they did enough to claim all three points but will have to settle for a hard-earned draw.

Foot soldiers who block law enforcement officers from arresting politicians can be charged – OSP

Director of Strategy, Research, and Communication at the OSP, Samuel Appiah Darko Director of Strategy, Research, and Communication at the OSP, Samuel Appiah Darko

The Director of Strategy, Research, and Communication at the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP), Samuel Appiah Darko, has warned that foot soldiers or supporters who interfere with law enforcement officers attempting to arrest politicians could face charges of obstruction of justice.

Speaking on JoyNews’ The Law on April 13, Appiah Darko explained that obstructing an arrest, whether by the person being arrested or bystanders, is a criminal offense.

“If foot soldiers or sympathizers try to block law enforcement officers from arresting someone, they can be charged with obstruction of justice,” he said.

He explained that under the OSP Act, this offence carries a minimum of two years and a maximum of four years in prison.

He further clarified that resisting arrest itself is a separate offence, punishable by a fine or a minimum one-year jail term, depending on the circumstances.

This, he noted, applies not only to the individual targeted for arrest but also to anyone impeding law enforcement, including friends, relatives, or political supporters.

Appiah Darko also addressed the misconception that only uniformed police officers can make arrests.

He noted that agencies like the OSP, the Economic and Organized Crime Office (EOCO), and intelligence agencies have legal authority to effect arrests, even without wearing police uniforms.

“The term ‘police powers’ extends beyond uniformed officers,” he said, emphasizing that these institutions operate under constitutional or parliamentary authority.

He urged the public to avoid interfering with lawful arrests to prevent facing serious legal consequences.

Nigeria bans airing of song criticizing President Tinubu

Artist Eedris Abdulkareem’s 'Tell Your Papa' slam President Bola Tinubu Artist Eedris Abdulkareem’s ‘Tell Your Papa’ slam President Bola Tinubu

The Nigerian authorities have banned broadcasters from playing the song “Tell Your Papa,” which criticizes the country’s leader.

Artist Eedris Abdulkareem’s lyrics slam President Bola Tinubu and urge his influential son, Seyi, to let his father know “people are dying” through hardship and insecurity, and there is “hunger” in the country.

In a letter to TV and radio stations, the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), which issues licenses and regulates the industry, ordered the track not to be played, saying it violates the country’s broadcast code.

The NBC said it considered “Tell Your Papa”’s content to be “inappropriate” and “objectionable,” adding that it falls short of public decency standards.

Released earlier in the week, the song has gained significant attention on social media in Nigeria and has sparked debate regarding the economic and security situation in the country.

On becoming president in May 2023, Tinubu introduced several economic reforms that increased the cost of living.

He dropped the fuel subsidy, which had long kept petrol prices low, saying that the government could no longer afford it. Fuel prices then jumped sharply, which had a knock-on effect on the rest of the economy.

Annual inflation was above 30% for most of last year, and the price of some basic food items increased by even more.

This has led some Nigerians to cut back on the number of meals they eat a day and the amount of food they consume.

There are also worries about the level of insecurity in the country, with kidnapping-for-ransom still a major issue and fears that the Islamist militant group Boko Haram could make a resurgence in the northeast.

On the track, in a mix of English, Yoruba, and Pidgin, Abdulkareem tells Tinubu’s son that his father “is not trying” and that he has made “too many empty promises.”

When it comes to insecurity, the artist urges Seyi to travel by road, instead of a private jet, to experience the dangers faced by ordinary Nigerians.

Tinubu’s government has in the past defended its economic policies, saying that the president is aiming to put the country on a stable footing in the long term.

To deal with the short-term pain, the authorities have an ongoing cash transfer scheme to help 15 million poorer Nigerian households.

Regarding security, the government has said that the situation has improved in the last 18 months.

As the licensing authority, the NBC can sanction broadcasters for ignoring its orders. In the past, it has fined stations and suspended licenses for violations.

Abdulkareem is not new to controversy, as he recorded a similar song in the past.

In 2003, he released his most popular tune to date—”Nigeria Jaga Jaga,” meaning “Nigeria has spoiled.”

Then-President Olusegun Obasanjo reacted harshly, publicly insulting Abdulkareem. The song was banned for broadcasters but gained popularity among Nigerians and became a street anthem.

Bawku crisis requires military action — IMANI’s Kofi Bentil

Senior Vice President of IMANI Africa, Kofi Bentil Senior Vice President of IMANI Africa, Kofi Bentil

Senior Vice President of IMANI Africa, Kofi Bentil, has declared that the ongoing crisis in Bawku has escalated beyond the scope of mediation and policing, calling for military intervention to restore peace.

Speaking on Joy News, Kofi Bentil emphasized that the situation has reached a “war-like” state, requiring decisive action from the Ghana Army.

Bentil argued that negotiation becomes ineffective when parties believe they can achieve their goals through force.

“If you believe you have what it takes to make your adversary do what you want, you will never negotiate,” he said. He stressed that negotiation only occurs when the negotiated outcome seems better or cheaper than alternatives.

He criticized the repeated failures of mediation and policing in Bawku, stating, “We keep doing the same things. It’s been failing.”

He highlighted the inadequacy of police efforts, noting that even the Inspector General of Police’s vehicle was reportedly shot at during the crisis.

Kofi Bentil urged authorities to simplify the complex situation by deploying military forces to take control of the territory and impose peace. “What the military is trained to do is to take territory, hold it, and impose peace,” he stressed. He warned that if armed groups are prepared to fight the military, there may be little that can be done beyond such intervention.

Kofi Bentil called for a reevaluation of Ghana’s approach to handling such crises and urged immediate military action to prevent further escalation.

Yirenkyi is reportedly being monitored by several top European clubs Yirenkyi is reportedly being monitored by several top European clubs

Ghanaian youngster Caleb Yirenkyi was among the scorers as FC Nordsjaelland secured a commanding 5-2 win over Randers FC in a Danish Superliga clash at Right to Dream Park.

The 19-year-old continued to impress with a solid performance, capping it off with a goal in the 60th minute to extend Nordsjaelland’s lead in the second half.

Benjamin Nygren was the star of the first half, netting a sensational hat-trick with goals in the 24th, 38th, and 40th minutes to give the hosts a comfortable 3-0 lead before the break.

Yirenkyi’s goal made it 4-1 after Randers had briefly pulled one back through Norman Campbell.

Gustav Wikkheim then sealed the win with Nordsjaelland’s fifth goal in the 77th minute.

Mathias Greve added a late consolation for the visitors, but it was too little, too late.

Yirenkyi’s growing influence in the Nordsjaelland setup has not gone unnoticed, with reports suggesting the talented Ghanaian is being monitored by several top European clubs.

The win further boosts Nordsjaelland’s position in the league as they chase a strong finish to the season, with Yirenkyi continuing to make a strong case as one of Ghana’s brightest emerging talents.

‘You don’t grandstand with Ghana’s image, that’s not being well-meaning citizen’ – Susan Adu-Amankwah

0

The Executive Secretary of the National Interest Movement has criticised the conduct of the Ranking Member of Parliament’s Defence Committee over his public allegations of two planes carrying suspicious cargo.

Susan Adu-Amankwah, contributing on Joy News’ Newsfile, questioned both the motivation and responsibility behind Reverend John Ntim Fordjour’s claims, made without proof that the planes were carrying cocaine and money.

“If he didn’t have evidence of cocaine and of money, what was he talking about?” she asked pointedly.

“Because we will reasonably think that he had gone further to say ‘suspicious flight’ and had mentioned cocaine and money. And that makes all of us think there must be something more to it.”

Her criticism centered on what she described as the misuse of political privilege and the danger of playing politics with Ghana’s international image.

Susan Adu-Amankwah’s comments come after Rev. Fordjour made allegations in Parliament and on various media platforms about suspicious aircraft landings in Ghana, but has yet to present any evidence to support those claims.

“He’s no ordinary citizen of Ghana. That’s why we pay them all that money,” she said of the MP.

“He is an MP and has privileges. If he had those suspicions, and it was not about grandstanding and about politics, he could have gone to the head of [national security].”

Susan Adu-Amankwah argued that the responsible course of action would have been for the MP to quietly engage the appropriate authorities before taking the matter public.

“That is the well-meaning Ghanaian. That is the well-meaning citizen,” she stressed. “You don’t just go hopping from station to station and grandstanding.”

She further noted the implications of such statements for Ghana’s global reputation.

“Sometimes people forget that when we go out there, it doesn’t matter whether you are NDC, NPP, independent — you are Ghanaian,” she said.

“When things go out into the public and into the world, it’s about you being Ghanaian.”

She warned that when Ghana is profiled internationally, it is not by political party but by nationality and race.

“They don’t profile us according to our political parties. They profile us according to our color, according to the country in which we come from,” she explained.

“So when you go out there thinking you are doing it against your party or for your party, and you want to grandstand, you’re doing it against all of us.”

Turning to the core of the allegations, Susan Adu-Amankwah underscored how critical the issue of drugs is to national interest, particularly among Ghana’s youth.

“Some of us feel that a lot of drug issues are already a problem in this country,” she said.

“We see the devastation Red has caused for young people. We definitely don’t want the other drugs to come and add to it.”

She called on the government to take control and investigate all legitimate suspicions, but reiterated that unsubstantiated public statements are dangerous.

“Any suspicion, yes — but when you say, ‘I mean this and this,’ we expect that you have more than just speculation,” she said. “That one, ah, you know…that’s not what well-meaning citizens do.”

Annual $400 million imports of chicken is a shame — President Mahama

0

President John Dramani Mahama President John Dramani Mahama

Ghana imports nearly $400 million worth of chicken every year, President John Dramani Mahama has said.

The President said the imports ought to be a source of shame for all Ghanaians, reiterating plans to support 54 individuals to produce four million birds, amounting to 10,000 metric tons of chicken.

President Mahama stressed his government’s commitment to advancing livestock development to improve cattle production and small ruminants, including goats and sheep, alongside improving access to high-quality breeds.

The President made this known when he launched the government’s Feed Ghana Programme, a flagship initiative, in Techiman in the Bono East Region.

He said the livestock production component of the programme would also focus on agro-production enclaves and infrastructure.

This involves the execution of irrigation systems, improved road infrastructure, provision of power supply, and establishment of warehousing facilities to attract private investment.

The President said that the programme would further enhance the production and processing of agricultural produce.

President Mahama presented maize seeds, fertilizers, a Kia truck, and tractors to some institutions, including the Ghana Prisons Service and National Service Authority, to spearhead the implementation of the programme.

He called for unity and shared commitment in transforming the nation’s agriculture as a driver of national growth and prosperity, saying the Feed Ghana Programme presented a proactive initiative rather than just a policy.

Admitting some challenges in the sector, the President said he was highly optimistic that the implementation of the programme would achieve success and called on farmers, agribusinesses, financial institutions, and development partners to join forces to achieve desirable outcomes.

The programme aims to implement strategic measures to increase food production, promote the adoption of modern farming techniques, improve infrastructure, and establish agro-industrial zones across Ghana.

President Mahama said key interventions within the Feed Ghana Programme include smart agriculture, involving the establishment of farmers’ service centres nationwide.

These centres will provide essential services such as mechanization, quality inputs, financial support, market access, primary processing, and training for farmers.

President Mahama announced the creation of farm banks or land banks in designated irrigable zones to support young agri-entrepreneurs and contribute to the enhancement of national food production.

He said the second component of the programme, grains and legumes development, would also focus on increasing the production of maize, rice, soybeans, and sorghum for consumption, agro-processing, and export.

The third component, the vegetable development project or ‘Yeredua,’ aims at reducing imports from neighbouring countries by promoting the cultivation of vegetables locally.

President Mahama highlighted the importance of investing in controlled environmental farming, such as greenhouse technologies, urban and peri-urban agriculture, and promoting schools to grow their own vegetables through backyard gardening.

The fourth component of the initiative will focus on promoting institutional farming to empower households and communities to cultivate vegetables such as tomatoes, peppers, and garden eggs to enhance self-sufficiency.

It will also extend support to institutions, such as Senior High Schools, to access lands to engage in crop production and livestock farming.

The fifth component of the programme involves the revitalization of the poultry industry, known as the “Nkoko Nketenkete” project.

‘We are profiled as Ghanaians, not NDC or NPP’ – Susan Adu-Amankwah on suspicious flights

0

Executive Secretary of the National Interest Movement, Susan Adu-Amankwah, has taken aim at what she describes as reckless grandstanding by politicians whose unverified allegations could damage Ghana’s global reputation.

Speaking on Newsfile on Joy News, Saturday, she criticised Rev John Ntim Fordjour, the Ranking Member of Parliament’s Defence Committee, who recently made sensational claims about suspicious aircraft landing in Ghana, with references to drugs and money, but has yet to provide proof.

“What was he talking about?” she asked. “Because we will reasonably think that he had gone further to say suspicious flights and had mentioned cocaine and money. That makes all of us think there must be something more to it.”

Adu-Amankwah questioned how the MP handled the matter, suggesting that someone in such a privileged position could have engaged the appropriate authorities quietly and responsibly.

“He’s no ordinary citizen of Ghana. That’s why we pay them all that money [as MP],” she stressed.

“If he had those suspicions, and it was not about grandstanding and about politics, he could have gone to the head of NIB or BNI. He could have said, ‘Look, this has come to my attention. We want you to do this. If I don’t hear from you by a certain time, I will go public.’ That is the well-meaning Ghanaian.”

Instead, she lamented, the approach has appeared more performative than patriotic.

“We expect that you have more than just hopping from station to station and grandstanding,” she said.

Susan Adu-Amankwah emphasized the need to separate partisanship from national interest, particularly when the stakes involve Ghana’s image on the international stage.

“Look, people sometimes forget that when we go out there, it doesn’t matter whether you are NDC, NPP… you are Ghanaian,” she declared.

“And when things go out into the public and into the world, it is about you being Ghanaian.”

She warned that political players often forget how such controversies affect all citizens.

“They don’t profile us according to our political parties. They profile us according to our color, according to the country, Ghana. That is how they profile us. So when you go out there thinking that you are doing it against a party, don’t forget you are doing it against all of us who don’t vote either NPP or NDC.”

She called for a sober, non-partisan approach to drug enforcement and national security, especially given the history of drug-related concerns in Ghana.

“We definitely don’t want the other drugs to come and add to it,” she said.

“We don’t want to be used as a transit point. We don’t want to be used as an endpoint. And so it’s important that the government takes hold of it.”

She made an emotional plea to politicians across the divide: “All of us as politicians, we need to recognise this. It’s not just about party lines. It’s about the dignity of this country, and the lives of our people.”

South Africa poised to re-open inquest into Nobel laureate’s death

0

A South African court is due to re-examine the circumstances around the death of one of the most renowned campaigners against the racist system of apartheid, which had initially been described as accidental.

A 1967 inquest ruled that Chief Albert Luthuli was walking on a railway line when he was struck by a train and died after fracturing his skull.

Activists and his family have long cast doubts on the official version of events, and have said they welcomed the re-opening of the inquest.

Luthuli, who at the time of his death was the leader of the then-banned African National Congress (ANC), won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1960 for spearheading the fight against apartheid.

The ANC went on to lead the struggle against white-minority rule and came to power in 1994, following the first democratic elections.

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has said that it “will be presenting evidence before the court in an attempt to have the initial findings into the deaths of Chief Luthuli… overturned”. It has not said what that evidence is.

Nearly six decades ago, the initial inquiry into the Nobel laureate’s death “found that there was no evidence which disclosed any criminal culpability on the part of any of the employees of the South African Railways or anyone else”, the NPA said last week.

But campaigners suspected the authorities had killed him and covered it up.

Luthuli’s grandson, Albert Mthunzi Luthuli, told South Africa’s IOL news site that the family “welcomes the re-opening of the inquest”, even though it is now years after the deaths of “many people that we suspected of being involved in my grandfather’s murder”.

“We believe the TRC [Truth and Reconciliation Commission] let many families of victims down by giving amnesty to apartheid murderers,” he added, referring to the post-apartheid process where perpetrators of violence in the previous decades were encouraged to come forward to fully confess their crimes.

At the time of his death, Luthuli was not allowed to leave his residential area in Groutville – now in KwaZulu-Natal province – or take part in politics.

He was South Africa’s first winner of the Nobel Peace Prize. The award was later given to three other South Africans: Archbishop Desmond Tutu in 1984, and Nelson Mandela and FW de Klerk in 1993.

The Luthuli case is one of two highly anticipated inquests into the deaths of anti-apartheid figures re-opening on Monday. The other concerns lawyer Mlungisi Griffiths Mxenge, who was killed in 1981.

He had been stabbed 45 times and his throat had been slit.

An inquest into his death a year later failed to identify his murderers and it was only nine years later that they were revealed – when Butana Almond Nofemela, confessed to killing Mxenge and seven other ANC members.

He was part of a covert hit-squad, or counter-insurgency unit, that detained and killed anti-apartheid activists.

Nofemela, together with the squad’s commander Dirk Coetzee and David Tshikalange, were in 1997 found guilty of Mxenge’s murder but were granted amnesty by the TRC before the criminal case could be concluded.

Explaining the reopening of the inquest into Mxenge’s death last year, the justice ministry said this was because new evidence had emerged, suggesting that “certain critical information” had not been presented to the TRC.

In South Africa, inquests often look into determining how a person died and whether anyone should be held responsible for their death.

Kennedy Agyapong calls for calm amid tensions in Bawku

0

Former Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong, has called for calm and unity in the wake of renewed violence in Bawku and its surrounding areas, which has led to multiple fatalities and injuries.

In a statement released on Sunday, April 13, Mr. Agyapong expressed deep concern over the escalation of tensions following a violent clash between police and some youth in the Bawku enclave on Thursday, April 10.

The unrest reportedly resulted in casualties and the alleged burning of the private residence of Bawku Central MP, Mahama Ayariga.

He appealed to the youth to remain calm, stressing that no grievance should lead to the loss of life or the destruction of communities.

“I have followed with deep concern the recent escalation of tensions in Bawku and surrounding communities. The recurring violent outbreaks and reprisals rooted in longstanding tribal conflicts, continue to cause pain and instability among our people.

“At this critical moment, I call for calm—especially from the youth. No grievance, however deeply felt, justifies the loss of life or the destruction of our communities. Our peaceful coexistence is the foundation of the prosperity and development we seek, without which we cannot build the Ghana we all desire,” he stated.

Mr. Agyapong also commended President John Dramani Mahama for activating a mediation process led by the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II—an initiative initially launched under former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

“This is a welcome sign of statesmanship and national unity, one that places Ghana above partisanship,” he noted.

He urged all parties involved in the conflict to support the Otumfuo-led committee in its efforts to restore peace, emphasizing that national unity and progress depend on stability in all parts of the country.

“When there is peace in Bawku, there is peace in Ghana. No part of this country can prosper while another is in pain. Ghana must move forward together,” Mr. Agyapong stated.

Tanzania’s main opposition party banned from election

0

Tanzanian opposition leader and former presidential candidate Tundu Lissu has also been arrested and charged with treason

Tanzania’s main opposition party has been barred from participating in this year’s election, days after its leader was charged with treason.

Ramadhani Kailima, director of elections at the Independent National Elections Commission, said that Chadema had failed to sign a code of conduct document that was due on Saturday, meaning the party was disqualified from October’s elections.

Last week, Chadema’s leader Tundu Lissu was arrested and charged with treason following a rally in southern Tanzania at which he called for electoral reforms.

The CCM party, which has governed Tanzania since 1977, is expected to retain power following the latest developments.

“Any party that did not sign the code of conduct will not participate in the general election,” Mr Kailima said on Saturday, adding that Chadema would also be banned from taking part in any by-elections until 2030.

Earlier on Saturday, Chadema had said that it would not participate in a code of conduct signing ceremony, as part of its drive for voting reforms.

The country is due to vote in parliamentary and presidential elections, where Lissu was expected to challenge incumbent President Samia Suluhu Hassan.

When Hassan first came to power in 2021, after the death of her predecessor John Magufuli, she was praised for reversing some of his more authoritarian tendencies.

Campaigners and opposition parties have since accused Hassan’s government of an intensifying crackdown on political opponents, citing arrests and abductions of opposition members. The government has denied the accusations and launched an investigation into the abductions.

One of the longest-reigning parties in Africa, CCM – or Chama Cha Mapinduzi – has governed Tanzania for over five decades.

Under the slogan “No Reforms, No Election”, Lissu has argued that there was no possibility of free and fair elections without changes to how elections are run in Tanzania.

Lissu said that the make-up of the electoral commission needed to change and should not include people directly appointed by Hassan.

Authorities accuse Lissu of seeking to disrupt the election and incite a rebellion.

He has been remanded in custody and his treason case adjourned until 24 April. His lawyer, Rugemeleza Nshala, told Reuters that the charges were politically motivated, adding: “You cannot separate these charges from politics.”

The opposition leader has been arrested on numerous occasions and in 2017 survived an assassination attempt in which his vehicle was shot 16 times.

He then went into exile, returning briefly in 2020 to run against Magufuli in that year’s election. He left after the results were announced, complaining about supposed irregularities.

He then returned again in 2023, following changes introduced by Samia which her government said were aimed at allowing greater opposition freedom.
