‘China, Russia are not your friends, don’t let them lie to you’

Renowned Ghanaian vlogger, Wode Maya Renowned Ghanaian vlogger, Wode Maya

Renowned Ghanaian vlogger, Wode Maya, has delivered a message to Africans on the need to liberate themselves from what he describes as modern-day slavery.

In a video shared on X on May 30, 2025, Wode Maya, widely known for his advocacy for African development, expressed concerns over the continent’s reliance on foreign powers.

According to him, countries like Russia, China, and several European nations do not have Africa’s best interests at heart.

“These nations are only after Africa’s natural resources. Africans must wake up and stop placing their trust in foreign powers that exploit rather than empower,” he stated.

Wode Maya’s comments have since sparked a wave of discussion online, with netizens praising his call for greater self-reliance and unity among African nations.

“Africa can only be built by Africans. Don’t let anyone lie to you! China is not your friend, Russia is not your friend. Europeans are not your friends,” he said.

Wode Maya, however, called on African countries to trade among themselves and also avoid engaging in political conflicts.

“It’s about time for you to start trading with each other. It’s about time for us to put our differences and tribal stuff aside. We should put our political affiliation aside, come together, and build Africa,” he added.

Government leverages purchasing power to revive textile, garment industry

0

The Ministry of Trade, Agribusiness, and Industry (MoATI) has initiated discussions with six other ministries to procure uniforms and apparel from local manufacturers and designers.

The move is expected to leverage state purchasing power and stimulate the textile and garment sector, according to Chief Director-MoATI Noah Tumfo, will see ministries including Education, Defence, Interior, Health, Lands and Natural Resources procure uniforms locally.

“This initiative is expected to create reliable market access for local manufacturers while strengthening domestic value chains,” Tumfo noted.

The overarching goal, he added, is to promote local procurement of uniforms and other apparel used by state institutions – a move that aligns with government’s Made-in Ghana programme.

Tumfo, who spoke at a policy dialogue on the textiles and garment industry organised by Development Bank Ghana (DBG) and Association of Ghana Industries (AGI), also announced that government is prioritising the development of a policy for the garment and textile.

The policy seeks to establish textiles and garment parks – aimed at accelerating growth of the domestic industry. This policy forms part of the Mahama-led administration’s ambitious Big Push industrial transformation agenda.

The parks, which will feature plug-and-play factory shells, are expected to significantly reduce the lead-time associated with setting up garment factories while addressing logistical challenges in securing suitable industrial sites.

Government also highlighted broader market opportunities along the textile value chain, which are bolstered by existing bilateral, regional and continental trade agreements.

Creating an enabling environment for investment in the sector is critical to unlocking its full potential, say industry players.

“The textile and garment industry’s revitalisation is not just an economic goal – it is a national mission. With the right policy framework, this sector can become a major source of employment, innovation and cultural pride,” Chief Director Tumfo told the gathering.

Policy dialogue

The event is part of an ongoing partnership signed between DBG and AGI in 2024.

As part of the memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the two, Development Bank Ghana is investing at least GH¢100million annually in the domestic textiles and garments industry over the next three years.

The funding is being channeled through partner financial institutions (PFIs) and development partners (DPs) via long-term financing.

DBG pledged to commit an initial GH¢566,200 for AGI to execute various activities under the programme. These include identifying at least three investable projects within the textile and apparel value chain, providing technical assistance, facilitating market development, organising capacity-building sessions and conducting regular monitoring and evaluation to assess the programme’s impact.

Under the MoU, DBG and AGI are implementing a three-year initiative to provide technical support, financial resources and market development assistance to selected textile, garment and fintech companies.

The programme aims to address critical challenges such as high production costs, limited skilled labour and restricted access to long-term financing.

Speaking at the event, themed Revamping Ghana’s textiles and garment industry -The challenges, pitfalls and opportunities, Chief Executive Officer-Development Bank Ghana, Dr Randolph Nsor-Ambala, noted that the domestic textile industry’s resurgence is being viewed as both a symbol of renewed industrial ambition and a strategic move to enhance international collaboration.

“Textiles represent a large entrepreneurial opportunity. For many, it’s more than a livelihood – it’s a pathway to dignity and economic empowerment. This is why our focus, as developers and financiers, has been on unleashing the textile industry’s full potential to deliver its associated benefits,” Nsor-Mbala noted.

Commenting on the event, he added that: “We need frank discussions on how to address institutional bottlenecks, supply-side challenges and the persistent dumping of foreign wax-prints on our market”.

Key among the priorities he highlighted were appropriate sourcing of raw materials, access to affordable and targetted financing and implementing practical, result-oriented strategies to support growth in the sector.

“There is an urgent need for pragmatic, implementable actions that bring together the financial sector, entrepreneurs and policymakers to drive the industry forward. The opportunities for employment are enormous – as are the prospects for restoring national pride and identity,” the DBG boss concluded.

AGI

Chief Executive Officer of the Association of Ghana Industries, Seth Twum-Akwaboah, reacting to the policy announcements, said that if properly implemented, the two policies have the potential to significantly transform the sector.

“If the government commits to buying locally, that creates a huge market which can spur expansion and job creation,” he stated.

Government clears salary arrears of Otto Addo, Chris Hughton, 5 other Black Stars coaches

The government, through the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, has settled unpaid salaries owed to both current and previous Black Stars technical team members.

The salary arrears accumulated between October 2024 and March 2025 for current head coach Otto Addo and his technical staff have been duly paid to motivate them.

The salary backlog for previous Black Stars coaches like Chris Hughton and Charles Kwabena Akonnor, together with other assistant coaches George Boateng, Didi Dramani, David Duncan, and Maxwell Konadu, has been cleared successfully.

The action was taken following a robust audit and inter-agency coordination to ensure a fair and transparent disbursement process.

It was also noted that the initiative forms part of sports minister Kofi Adams’ efforts to clear the backlog of salaries for Ghanaian coaches who served the nation by playing a role in the Black Stars technical team.

This comes at a good moment as the Black Stars will be hoping to secure qualification for the 2026 World Cup, having topped their group with a few matches left to conclude the campaign.

“He Did That in a Big Way!” – Sarkodie Credits Akon for Afrobeats’ Global Dominance

Ghanaian rap icon Sarkodie has publicly acknowledged Akon’s role in the global rise of Afrobeats, describing the Senegalese-American artist as a key contributor to the genre’s success.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Sarkodie praised Akon for using his influence to support African talent during his peak.

“Big shouts to the legend @Akon for what you did for Afrobeats!!! We can’t skip that in history… few artists at their prime will look back and put their people on from the motherland! He did that in a big way!” Sarkodie wrote. “Of course it’s been bigger and better since, but we can’t ignore his contribution to the global dominance of Afrobeats.”

However, the post has sparked mixed reactions online. While some agree with Sarkodie’s sentiments, others believe Akon’s impact has been overstated. Critics argue that although he may have played a role, his contribution pales in comparison to the consistent efforts of other African artists who have carried the genre to its current global stature.

A Station Refused To Play My Song In Ewe – Keeny Ice

0

Keeny Ice

Ghanaian rapper, Keeny Ice, has claimed that a local radio station once refused to play his music because the lyrics were in the local dialect, Ewe.

Speaking on Hitz FM with Doreen Avio and DJ Slim, the artist from the Volta Region said he approached a radio station (which he did not name) with one of his songs, but it was turned down due to the language.

“I went to a radio station and somebody told me, ‘We can’t play an Ewe song. I don’t understand what you say in the song,’” he alleged.

Keeny Ice believes this reflects a broader issue in the Ghanaian music industry, where songs in less widely spoken local languages face challenges in gaining mainstream acceptance.

He pointed out that languages like Twi, Fante, and Akan dominate the industry, making it harder for artists who perform in Ewe, Dagbani, or other indigenous tongues.

He explained that although he is an Ewe, he doesn’t always perform in his native language. “I have songs that don’t have any Ewe words,” he added.

He also commented on the shift among Ghanaian rappers towards singing and danceable music, saying that financial opportunities often go to Afrobeat and commercial artists rather than traditional rappers.

Keeny Ice, who has released songs such as Deja Vu, Sound Check, My Way, and Aya, is set to release his new EP titled “Ice Cold” today, May 30, 2025.

Trent Alexander-Arnold joins Real Madrid

0

Trent Alexander-Arnold will become a Real Madrid player on Sunday, 1 June after Liverpool accepted a 10m euros (£8.4m) fee to release the defender early from his contract.

According to sources, Real have made the single, up-front payment to allow the England right-back to join the Spanish side in time to play in the Club World Cup.

Alexander-Arnold, who had already confirmed he would leave Liverpool this summer, has agreed a six-year deal.

The 26-year-old would have been able to leave Liverpool on a free transfer when his contract expired on 30 June.

Fifa approved an additional window for this summer, from 1-10 June, allowing teams to register new players for the expanded month-long Club World Cup, which starts on 14 June and is being held in the United States.

Real’s opening group game is against Saudi side Al-Hilal on 18 June in Miami.

Alexander-Arnold has been with Liverpool since joining his hometown club at the age of six.

He has won two Premier League titles, the Champions League, Fifa Club World Cup, Uefa Super Cup, FA Cup and League Cup with the Reds.

But earlier this month he said he had decided to leave to experience a “new challenge” and to push himself “personally and professionally”.

Alexander-Arnold leaves Liverpool having claimed 23 goals and 92 assists in 354 appearances for the club.

He will join England team-mate Jude Bellingham in Madrid, plus former Liverpool and Real midfielder Xabi Alonso.

Alonso, 43, has succeeded Carlo Ancelotti as Real boss after the club failed to win a major domestic or European trophy for the first time since 2020-21.

Cassie Ventura Welcomes Third Child Amid ‘Diddy’ Trial

0

Cassie Ventura

Singer Cassie Ventura has welcomed her third child, a baby boy, with her husband Alex Fine. The couple, who are already parents to two daughters, Frankie and Sunny, expanded their growing family earlier this week.

The news was confirmed by celebrity stylist Deonte Nash, who revealed during his testimony in federal court on Wednesday that he had spoken with Ventura on Tuesday and congratulated her after the birth.

This joyful development comes during a turbulent time for Ventura, who recently served as a key witness in the federal criminal trial of her ex-boyfriend, music mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs. Earlier this month, Ventura gave nearly 20 hours of emotional and graphic testimony detailing years of alleged abuse during her relationship with Combs, which spanned from 2007 to 2018.

Ventura was identified as “Victim 1” in the federal indictment against Combs, who faces multiple charges, including racketeering conspiracy, sex trafficking, and transportation to engage in prostitution. He has pleaded not guilty and could face life in prison if convicted on the most serious counts.

In court, Ventura recounted episodes of violence, mental health struggles, and disturbing details of their past relationship. A civil lawsuit she filed against Combs in November 2023 was settled within a day for $20 million. During her testimony, Ventura said she hoped to inspire and empower other survivors of abuse.

Despite the weight of her involvement in the high-profile case, Ventura and Fine announced in February that they were expecting another child, a message that was warmly received by fans.

Representatives for Ventura and Fine have not yet issued an official statement regarding the birth.

Ghana, UAE sign MOU to build $1 billion innovation hub

0

Accra, May 30, GNA- Ghana has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the United Arab Emirates, led by the Ports, Customs and Free Zone Corporation (PCFC), to build a $1 billion innovation hub in Accra.

The investment will be fully funded by PCFC, while Ghana will provide the land to be located in Ningo Prampram in the Greater Accra region.

The 25-kilometre square facility is expected to begin in 2026 and be completed before the end of 2027.

Mr Sam George, the Minister of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovation Communications, signed on behalf of Ghana, while Mr Sultan Ahmed Bin Sulayem, Group Chairman, PCFC, signed for the UAE.

Mr George said the partnership between Ghana, PCFC and the G42, leading AI firms in the world, would revolutionise technology in the country.

The partnership, he stated, was part of President Mahama’s vision of transforming Ghana into the next AI hub for Africa by launching the one million coders programme.

“As you train a million coders, you need to have jobs for these coders, and that is where PCFC comes in.

“Having the innovation hub built in Ghana PCFC will come along with the over 11,000 companies that are under their umbrella in the UAE to have a Ghanaian presence,” he said.

PCFC has led in the transformation of Dubai’s AI ecosystem and currently holds over 11 innovation hubs in Dubai and operates with all the big 10 top tech companies in the world, like Microsoft, Oracle, IBM, and others.

He said PCFC was part of the Dubai Ports that are logistics companies, serving over 11,000 clients, including Africa, but without a hub on the continent.

“Ghana, being the gateway to Africa, reached out to the company to establish the hub.

“The facility will attract all the big top tech companies in Ghana. So our Business Process Outsourcing, Knowledge Process Outsourcing, AI Engineering, and all the new emerging technology fields will be positioned here in Africa,” he said.

He said the company would not set up the hub in Ghana and bring in the human capital or human skill sets from outside of the country but would rather employ Ghanaians through the coders programme.

The Minister said the agreement was both bold in ambition and also grounded in mutual respect and built on a shared understanding that digital transformation was no longer optional but essential.

This initiative, he stressed, was designed to anchor Ghana’s place as a continental leader in digital transformation and technological advancement.

Mr Bin Sulayem underscored the importance of technology in empowering future development.

He said the wealth of a country relied on its new ideas or innovation to advance the needed growth for sustainable development.

He expressed the company’s resolve and commitment to partner with Ghana to enhance technology in the emerging economy and provide jobs for the citizens.

‘I know where you stay, your time will come’ – KOKA threatens EOCO officers

Entertainment pundit KOKA Entertainment pundit KOKA

Amid the ongoing controversy surrounding the arrest of NPP’s, Chairman Wontumi, by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), KOKA has stirred public attention with some controversial statements.

In a video circulating widely on social media, KOKA was seen issuing a stern warning to EOCO officers.

He accused them of political bias and threatened retaliation if the New Patriotic Party (NPP) regains power.

“I know where you stay. You are laughing at us. We know you’re there mocking us, and your time will come,” KOKA stated in the video.

He further alleged that the Ghana Police Service and other security agencies are acting in the interest of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) rather than serving the people of Ghana.

“This is now a personal vendetta because the police are working for the government,” he said. “The police told us they won’t allow us into the premises. I want them to know this was only a reset, but the process isn’t over.

“When the time comes, we’ll identify you and bring you from your room for judgment,” he added.

Background

KOKA’s statements came during a protest he led with Minority MP’s at the EOCO office, demanding the release of Chairman Wontumi, who has since been in custody.

He is currently under investigations for several serious offenses, including fraud, causing financial loss to the state, and money laundering.

Although bail has been granted in the sum of GH¢50 million, his legal team has so far failed to meet the necessary conditions for his release.

EOCO’s decision to keep the NPP stalwart in custody has triggered a discussion, especially among NPP Minority MPs, who argue the move is politically motivated.

Government promises fair treatment for all creditors

0

Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, Minister of Finance Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, Minister of Finance

Government is reaffirming its commitment to fair treatment for all external creditors as it nears the final stage of its debt restructuring process, which is aimed at restoring financial stability and investor confidence after the crushing defaults of 2022.

In a statement on Wednesday, the Ministry of Finance said it continues to make “good progress” in negotiations with remaining creditors within the debt restructuring perimeter.

Government stressed that it has not extended preferential terms to any creditor group, aligning with the G20 Common Framework’s principle of Comparability of Treatment – a key condition for continued multilateral support.

“We have strictly applied provisions in the Memorandum of Understanding with our official creditors – and in particular have continued to remain in arrears with all external creditors included in the debt restructuring perimeter. No creditor has been treated preferentially,” a portion of the statement read.

The restructuring process, now 97 percent complete, follows the historic default on external debt triggered by rising borrowing costs, a depreciating currency and a collapse in revenue during the COVID-19 pandemic and Russia-Ukraine conflict fallout as well as a subsequent downgrading of the nation’s debt, which triggered capital flight.

Government initiated a debt exchange programme covering over US$20billion in external liabilities to regain debt sustainability and unlock funding under a US$3billion Extended Credit Facility (ECF) from the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

Key to the process was a US$13billion Eurobond exchange concluded in under nine months. The deal secured 98 percent consent from bondholders – surpassing the 65 percent threshold required – and resulted in a 37 percent nominal haircut.

It also reduced the average coupon rate from over 8 percent to below 5 percent, substantially easing the interest burden and curing defaults on international bonds.

Officials say the deal has helped normalise the country’s standing with rating agencies and global capital markets. The successful outcome was widely seen as a key moment in the country’s economic reset and a potential model for other heavily indebted developing economies.

While most of the restructuring is now finalised, about 3 percent -primarily commercial loans – remains under negotiation, as reiterated by President John Dramani Mahama during a Presidential panel discussion at the 60th Annual Meeting of the Africa Development Bank (AfDB) in Abidjan, Cotê d’Ivoire.

Speaking of the process, he said: “It brought the quantum of our debt, that is the size, down; but it also stretched the repayment period, which brought us to about a 76 percent debt-to-GDP ratio. Since then, we are left with three percent of the debt as we covered 97 percent. It is left with some commercial creditors who hold about three percent of the debt; and once we do that, the entire process will be complete”.

He suggested that government is working to close the gap, with ongoing discussions centred on instruments that are more complex and less uniform than Eurobonds or bilateral loans.

The Finance Ministry said it remains “committed to achieving a fair and mutually beneficial resolution with all creditors” and expressed appreciation for the “forbearance, cooperation and support” of its international partners.

Ghana’s fiscal outlook has improved markedly, helped by better-than-expected revenue performance, a stronger cedi and tighter spending controls.

Government is targetting a debt-to-GDP ratio of between 55 percent and 58 percent by 2028, a goal officials believe is within reach well ahead of the IMF schedule.

If current trends hold, the nation is expected to reach a moderate risk of debt distress status by 2028 – a notable improvement from the high-risk classification it held during the peak of its crisis.

Still, analysts caution that the final stretch of creditor negotiations could pose challenges; particularly as legacy debts, especially in the electricity sub-sector, continue to weigh heavily on government’s intended expenditure. Any slippage in fiscal consolidation or delays in finalising the remaining restructuring agreements could weigh on investor sentiment.

Ghanaian actor and filmmaker Kwadwo Nkansah, popularly known as Lilwin, has claimed that the production of his latest movie project, “Ibrahim Traoré,” has been disrupted following an attack by unidentified armed men on motorbikes.

In a statement made via his official social media platforms, Lilwin reported that the assailants stormed the set of the movie, destroyed equipment and props, and caused significant disruption. According to him, the attack occurred without warning during a shoot. Fortunately, no one was physically harmed during the alleged incident.

Lilwin did not provide video footage or third-party confirmation of the event, and no official police statement has been released at the time of this report. The absence of independent verification has led to public speculation and calls for further clarity.

“We were peacefully shooting our ‘Ibrahim Traoré’ movie when armed men on motorbikes came and destroyed everything,” Lilwin said in his post. “Though no one was harmed, this has forced us to halt all production activities. This project meant a lot to us and to Africa.”

The “Ibrahim Traoré” film, inspired by the leadership of Burkinabè President Captain Ibrahim Traoré, was anticipated to be one of Lilwin’s most ambitious works—blending historical storytelling with contemporary African political themes.

Reactions online have been mixed. While many fans and fellow entertainers have expressed solidarity and support, others have called for more transparency, urging authorities to investigate and verify the claims. As of now, no arrests have been made, and the motives behind the alleged attack remain unknown.

All production on “Ibrahim Traoré” has been suspended indefinitely, pending further assessment and investigations.

Sky Train Case: I’m innocent of all charges

0

Professor Christopher Ameyaw-Akumfi, former Board Chairman of the Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund (GIIF), has spoken publicly for the first time since his arraignment in connection with the controversial Sky Train project, declaring his innocence and expressing heartfelt gratitude for the overwhelming support he has received.

In a personal statement released on Friday, May 30, Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi confirmed that he has pleaded not guilty to all charges brought against him, emphasising his commitment to transparency and accountability—values he says must be upheld within a framework of justice and fairness.

“I welcome the opportunity to clear my name and have full confidence in my innocence,” he added.

The former Minister of Education, who served in various capacities under the John Agyekum Kufuor administration, is among former GIIF officials facing prosecution over the failed $2.3 billion Sky Train project.

The initiative, launched in 2019 as part of efforts to modernise Ghana’s urban transport system, was suspended amid procurement concerns and questions about its financial viability.

Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi described the period following the news of his arraignment as “challenging,” but noted that he has been deeply moved by the outpouring of solidarity.

He expressed gratitude to his family, close friends, and legal counsel for their steadfast support during what he called a trying time.

“Their encouragement has strengthened my resolve to stay the course,” he said.

Significantly, Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi also acknowledged support from key political figures. He extended special thanks to former Assin Central MP, Hon. Kennedy Agyapong, whom he described as showing “Santaclausian brotherliness”.

He also lauded Techiman South MP, Hon. Martin Kwaku Agyei Mensah Korsah, whose support, according to him, “exemplifies the enduring strength of family ties.” Both figures are known allies within the New Patriotic Party (NPP), where Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi remains a respected elder.

UN lauds Ghana’s contribution to peacekeeping

0

The UN has lauded Ghana’s contribution to maintenance of peace and stability across the world through peacekeeping missions.

Ghana is ranked seventh among troop-contributing countries in the world.

The acting UN Resident Coordinator, Osama Makkawi Khogali, said “Ghana has long been a steadfast pillar of UN peacekeeping efforts with a distinguished legacy dating back to the early 1960s”.

“Today, we proudly recognise Ghana’s remarkable contributions, as the nation ranks seventh among 122 troop-contributing countries—a testament to its enduring commitment to global peace and security,” he added.

Mr Khogali said that the contribution of Ghanaian peacekeepers transcended duty; it depicted a profound calling to uphold the values of humanity, solidarity and hope in the world’s most challenging environments.

Ceremony

Mr Khogali was speaking at a flag-raising ceremony to commemorate the 77th International Day of UN Peacekeepers in Accra yesterday, on the theme: “The future of peacekeeping: Strengthening partnership and multilateralism in Ghana and beyond”.

It was organised by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) in collaboration with the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF).

The ceremony aimed at paying tribute to security and civilian peacekeepers who lost their lives in the process, while complimenting those who had served, and continued to serve in UN peacekeeping missions.

In attedance were members of the diplomatic corps and high-ranking officials of MFA and GAF, as well as the Minister of State in-Charge of Government Communication, Felix Ofosu Kwakye, who was the guest speaker.

Tribute

Mr Khogali paid tribute to the 57 peacekeepers who lost their lives last year, including two Ghanaian soldiers – Sergeant Evans Kyere and Warrant Officer II David Kwame Amankwah.

He added that the two “fallen heroes” would later this year be conferred with the “Dag Hammarskjold Medals” in a ceremony in New York.

Mr Khogali further congratulated Squadron Leader Sharon Syme, a Ghanaian soldier, for receiving the 2024 Military Gender Advocate of the Year Award.

He emphasised the importance of partnerships and multilateralism in peacekeeping, including the need for unity, collaboration and intentional action to address evolving security threats.

Mr Khogali said there was the need for investment in training and capacity building to equip peacekeepers with modern tools and increase funding for crisis management, among others.

Commitment

For his part, Mr Kwakye said the country would continue to advocate a more robust and inclusive multilateral system because multilateralism, though imperfect, was still the best tool to sustain peacekeeping efforts in an increasingly fractured world.

He urged world leaders to recommit to collective action to fully resource missions, equip them with robust mandates, and stand united with the brave women and men who risked their lives to protect civilians.

The minister said there was the need to ensure that peacekeeping operations thrived even in the most challenging environment.

“Our contribution to global peace has been tremendous.

Our brave men and women peacekeepers have, through their dedication in Liberia, South Sudan and beyond, demonstrated to the world that lasting stability is achievable under even the most difficult circumstances,” he said.

Mr Kwakye also said that commemoration of the peacekeepers’ day must serve as a reminder that it was only through a shared vision of human dignity that “we can uphold the worth of every individual and build a more secure world”.

68.3% of bribery cases in Ghana involve men

0

A new report from the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) shows that men are much more likely than women to pay bribes when dealing with public offices.

The report, which is part of the Governance Series Wave 1, noted that while 55.7% of Ghanaians interacted with public officials in 2024, nearly one in six (18.4%) admitted to giving gifts in exchange for services.

The study used phone interviews to survey 7,248 people across all 16 regions of Ghana. It found that 55.7% had interacted with a public official in 2024.

The research supports Ghana’s efforts to monitor progress on SDG Indicator 16.5.1, which tracks bribery in public institutions.

Strikingly, men accounted for 68.3% of these bribery cases, more than double the figure recorded among women (31.7%).

The data, which sheds light on the continued grip of corruption on public service delivery, suggests that men are not only more involved in institutional engagements but also more likely to resort to illicit payments to facilitate access to services.

The chart shows that money is by far the most common item given to public officials in addition to official fees, making up 85.2% of all such gifts. This is followed distantly by: Food, drinks, or animals: 9.0%, Exchange services: 4.4%, and Valuables: 1.4%

This highlights that cash bribes are the dominant form of unofficial payments in public service interactions.

The trend was also more pronounced in urban areas, where 64.3% of bribery cases occurred, compared to 35.7% in rural settings.

The Greater Accra and Ashanti regions recorded the highest levels of bribery, while the Savannah and North East regions had the lowest.

The report additionally highlighted that vulnerable groups—especially persons with physical and visual impairments—were more likely to experience bribery, raising concerns about equity in access to public services.

He said the criminal investigation was running concurrently with asset recovery processes to prevent further dissipation of what the law enforcement agencies strongly suspected to be proceeds of crime.

The Deputy-Attorney General said the suspect was also under a second strand of investigation, which was part of a larger international organised crime scheme.

“The Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) is assiduously working with international law enforcement partners on this second strand of criminal investigations,” Mr Srem-Sai said on his Facebook page on Thursday.

Mr Antwi Boasiako, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party, was arrested on Tuesday, May 27, following a summons by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service.

He remains in the custody of the EOCO as his legal team continues with efforts to meet his GH₵50 million bail condition.

Is Otto Addo afraid to substitute Jordan Ayew when he is underperforming? – Don Little fumes

0

Don Little (L) has criticised Jordan Ayew (R) for missing a chance against Nigeria Don Little (L) has criticised Jordan Ayew (R) for missing a chance against Nigeria

Ghanaian actor and football fanatic Don Little has criticised Black Stars captain Jordan Ayew for his underwhelming performance during the team’s 2-1 defeat to Nigeria in the 2025 Unity Cup.

According to him, the skipper’s inability to convert some clear-cut chances that could have leveled the game was disappointing.

However, he noted that the team’s general performance was commendable, especially the new players who got the opportunity to play.

“The match was not good, although the players did well, Ayew cost us because he didn’t play well at all. If you’re a captain and can’t score such a clear chance, then you’re of no use. Ghanaians should feel free say it,” he fumed in a video that has gone viral on X.

The renowned actor went on to question head coach Otto Addo for not substituting Ayew when he was underperforming.

He asserted that the coach fears the Leicester City attacker, hence his reluctance to take him off in matches.

“Is the coach afraid of Ayew? I think he is,” he said in Twi.

This comes after the Super Eagles of Nigeria secured a hard-fought 2-1 victory over the Black Stars in the semi-finals of the 2025 Unity Cup at the GTech Community Stadium on Wednesday, May 28, 2025, advancing to the tournament final.

The Black Stars will now face Trinidad and Tobago in the third-place playoff, while Nigeria advances to meet Jamaica in the final on Saturday, May 31, 2025, at the same venue.

MPs Renew Calls For Elected MMDCEs

0

Eric Nana Agyemang, the Minority Chief Whip

The longstanding debate over the election of Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) resurfaced in Parliament yesterday, as both Majority and Minority Members of Parliament (MPs) urged the House to chart a clear course toward the implementation of an elective system to improve local governance.

Contributing to a statement made by his colleague of the Ahafo Ano North, Eric Nana Agyemang, the Minority Chief Whip, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, emphasised that the proposal was not intended to create division between MMDCEs and Members of Parliament, but to reform a decades-old system that often breeds unnecessary tension at the local level.

“Nobody is drawing a collision course between MMDCEs and MPs,” he said and continued, “We have practiced decentralisation since the 1980s. Change is inevitable. It is time we take a patriotic position and confront the challenges within our local government structure.”

He cited incidents of violence during MMDCE confirmation processes across the country, arguing that introducing elections could reduce friction and increase accountability.

According to him, while MPs and Assembly Members are elected, MMDCEs are selected by a small group, raising questions about democratic representation.

“Why should only MMDCEs be appointed? We elect everyone else in the process,” Mr. Annoh-Dompreh asked, calling on Parliament to push constitutional amendments that would open the position to public vote.

Other MPs echoed similar sentiments and reminded the House that both major parties – NPP and NDC – had previously agreed in principle to the election of MMDCEs, though the disagreement centred on whether these elections should be held on partisan or nonpartisan lines.

“This issue is long overdue,” Ahafo Ano North MP, Eric Nana Agyemang said, adding, “The current government, with its parliamentary strength and manifesto commitments in both 2020 and 2024, has what it takes to make this happen. We on this side are ready to support them.”

He called for a national roadmap to guide the transition and urged stakeholders to work with the ongoing Constitutional Review Committee to embed this change in the national governance framework.

However, concerns over implementation lingered. Deputy Majority Whip and National Democratic Congress (NDC) MP for Bia East, Richard Acheampong warned that an elected MMDCE who does not share the central government’s vision could frustrate development plans, particularly in light of increased fiscal decentralisation, where 80% of development resources are being pushed to the local level.

“There are fears that a DCE from a different party could refuse to implement the government’s programmes,” he noted and quizzed, “How then does the central government achieve its objectives?”

The debate also brought to light concerns about national security and protocol logistics, with Mr. Acheampong raising hypothetical but plausible issues: “What happens when the President visits a district headed by an opposition-aligned DCE? Even access to accommodation or basic protocol arrangements could become politicised.”

Despite these reservations, MPs across the political divide agreed on the need for reform. They called for constructive engagement to build a framework that balances local democratic participation with national coherence.

“This shouldn’t just end as another round of lamentation. Let’s sustain the conversation and empower the Local Government Committee to follow this through to a logical conclusion,” Mr. Annoh-Dompreh intimated.

Parliamentarians were hopeful that consensus could be reached to finally resolve this governance puzzle, with the Constitutional Review Committee currently at work.

ADC urges probe into foreign affairs spending

0

The Africa Development Council (ADC) has called for a full-scale investigation into the financial activities and asset management practices of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration under the previous government, describing the level of mismanagement as alarming and detrimental to the national interest.

The Council, in a statement, signed by its Honoray Head of Protocols,  Timothy Gobah, expressed grave concern over what it described as “reckless abandonment of State machinery on the altar of self-aggrandisement” by former officials.

According to the ADC, several government-owned residences, both within the country and in foreign missions, were neglected during the tenure of the past administration, with preference given to private hotels, paid for with state funds.

“Residencies of Regional Coordinating Councils were left to rot, while personal hotels were used instead, with the State footing the bills,” the statement read.

“In the Russia Federation, for example, a Foreign Mission residence was left unattended while a hotel was rented for the ambassador throughout his tenure,” it added.

The Council also revealed that parcels of land granted to Ghana by other governments for embassy construction—such as one in the Russian Federation—remained undeveloped, despite being part of reciprocal diplomatic arrangements.

Revelations

In light of the revelations, the ADC called on the Operation-Recover-All-Loot (ORAL) team,  the anti corruption initiative of President John Mahama, to thoroughly investigate all foreign missions and recover any misused public funds.

It further recommended that the current government urgently reshuffle or recall all diplomatic staff posted abroad, suggesting that many may have been complicit or negligent.

LatexFoamPromo

The Council concluded by calling on national leadership to adopt long-term, visionary planning in foreign affairs management, rather than the ad hoc decisions it claimed had plagued the sector.

“It is time the leadership of the country began to think beyond the current generation, in order to  do away with adhoc style of leadership,” the Council stated.

The Daily Graphic reported last Monday that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs had recalled all staff of Ghana’s mission in Washington DC, with immediate effect, over alleged fraudulent activities uncovered in that embassy.

Some officers of Ghana’s Embassy in the US were found to have allegedly created a parallel bank account to the state accounts in which they collected visa and other service fees due the embassy.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, who disclosed this to the Daily Graphic last Sunday, said a new team of staff of the ministry would be dispatched.

Parliament can’t revise Wontumi’s GH₵50m bail, seek redress in court – Deputy Speaker to Minority

0

The First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Bernard Ahiafor, has urged the Minority in Parliament to seek legal redress if they are dissatisfied with the GH₵50 million bail condition imposed on the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.

According to Ahiafor, Parliament lacks the constitutional authority to intervene in matters under the jurisdiction of the judiciary or security agencies. He advised the Minority to apply to the High Court for a review of the bail terms if they consider them harsh.

“This is a matter that can adequately be addressed by the judiciary. If a security agency imposes a bail condition that you feel is harsh, I do not think Parliament has the authority to call for a review of that decision,” Ahiafor stated.

He further added that if someone is held beyond the constitutionally allowed period, the law provides a clear legal path for redress.

The Deputy Speaker’s comments follow concerns raised by Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin in Parliament over what he described as excessive and unjustifiable bail conditions imposed on Wontumi.

Afenyo-Markin noted that Chairman Wontumi has been in the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) custody for 48 hours despite being unwell, and was recently transferred to a clinic at the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB).

He argued that the GH₵50 million bail amount and the requirement to justify property ownership were excessive and unfair, especially since Wontumi is not yet on trial and has cooperated with investigations.

“I must argue that EOCO cannot arrogate the power of demanding justification at the enquiry level. You are conducting an investigation; the matter is not before a court for trial, yet the bail conditions are onerous. It is clear that this is being used to punish him,” Afenyo-Markin said.

Chairman Wontumi was arrested earlier in the week and later granted bail by EOCO. His detention and bail terms have sparked protests from NPP MPs and supporters, who accuse the government of using state institutions to target political opponents.

Meanwhile, the Deputy Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Justice Srem-Sai, revealed that Chairman Wontumi is under investigation for alleged serious criminal offences, including fraud, causing financial loss to the state, and money laundering.

Zoomlion Nigeria partners with Lagos State to transform waste management

0

The Lagos State Government has inked a groundbreaking Waste Management and Processing Concession Agreement with ZoomLion Nigeria Limited, a subsidiary of Ghana’s renowned Jospong Group of Companies (JGC).

This Public-Private Partnership (PPP) initiative aims to transform the state’s waste management landscape. The Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu and the Executive Chairman of JGC, Dr. Joseph Siaw Agyepong, formalised the partnership at the State House in Alausa, Ikeja, Nigeria.

This collaboration will see the development of two pivotal facilities: a material recovery plant and a waste recycling plant. These installations will be crucial in integrating Lagos into a modern and sustainable waste management framework. Lagos State currently generates approximately 13,000 tonnes of waste daily.

Key components of the agreement include the construction of Transfer Loading Stations (TLS) at the Olusosun Dumpsite in Ketu and Solous III Dumpsite in Igando. These facilities will pave the way for the eventual closure and decommissioning of the dumpsites.

The TLS at Olusosun will divert 2,500 tonnes of waste daily to a new Material Recovery Facility (MRF) in Ikorodu, while the TLS at Solous III will divert 1,500 tonnes daily to a new MRF in Badagry.

Additionally, self-tipping tricycles will be deployed to enhance waste collection in hard-to-reach areas across the metropolis. All projects are slated for completion within 18 months.

Governor Sanwo-Olu hailed the agreement as a “turning point” in the state’s waste management journey, emphasizing that it would create over 5,000 direct and indirect jobs and enhance the operations of PSP waste operators.
“Today, we have witnessed the official commencement of a mutually beneficial relationship between a forward-looking private company and a committed public sector. This agreement will redefine how we manage, process, and recycle waste in Lagos. It’s not just a change in strategy but a complete transformation of our waste ecosystem,” he said.

This initiative, he stressed, would not result in job losses but rather create over 5,000 direct and indirect jobs, offering dignified and sustainable employment opportunities.

He also underscored that the concession would enhance the operations of PSP waste operators, enabling quicker turnarounds in refuse collection.

“From food waste to plastics and glass, materials will now be recycled into reusable products. This opens the door to future opportunities in carbon credits, biodiversity, and biofuels. Waste will no longer be a burden but a resource,” Governor Sanwo-Olu added.

The Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, described the project as a major milestone, marking the state’s transition to a circular waste economy.
“We can now begin to generate wealth from what we previously discarded. This project was thoroughly reviewed by the Executive Council and the House of Assembly before it was approved,” Wahab indicated.

The Executive Chairman of Jospong Group, Dr. Agyepong, highlighted the significance of intra-African partnerships for sustainable development, pledging that ZoomLion Nigeria Ltd., would deliver on all terms of the agreement within the stipulated timeframe. This partnership is poised to redefine waste management in Lagos, turning waste into a valuable resource.

I Will Expose You If You Don’t Speak The Truth

Popular Ghanaian media personality Kevin Taylor has issued a stern warning to a young man identified as Williams Anarfi Sarpong, who is accused of using a photo of former President John Dramani Mahama in connection with a gold scam. In a post on social media, Taylor, host of Loud Silence Media’s “With All Due Respect”, gave Sarpong a 24-hour ultimatum to publicly disassociate Mahama from the alleged scam or face exposure on his show.

Taylor alleged that Sarpong had used an old photograph taken with Mahama—before he became president—to deceive Arabian businessmen in Dubai as part of a gold scam. Taylor emphasised that the grace period had expired without any public clarification from Sarpong, warning that he would expose the full details in an upcoming broadcast.

“You had 24 hours to clear President Mahama’s name, and you failed to do so. You planned to use an old photo with him to defraud Arabs in a gold scam. On my next show, I will reveal everything,” Taylor stated.

He further hinted at deeper revelations, promising to expose not only Sarpong but also three companies allegedly linked to the scam: JILLRANDAL GROUP OF COMPANIES, WASK GROUP OF COMPANIES, and DADABA GROUP OF COMPANIES.

As of the end of the deadline, Sarpong had not issued any public response. Taylor’s looming exposé has generated significant attention, with many of his followers anticipating a detailed breakdown of the alleged fraud during his next show.

Well-known for his bold commentaries and investigative reporting, Kevin Taylor has built a reputation for confronting corruption in Ghanaian political and business circles. This latest episode adds to his track record of high-stakes revelations.

With no public defence from Sarpong so far, all eyes are now on Taylor’s upcoming broadcast, which promises to shine a spotlight on the individuals and entities allegedly involved in the gold scam.

Speaking on Joy FM’s News Night, Mr. Obour argued that instead of mounting public protests and exerting political pressure, Wontumi’s lawyers and Minority Members of Parliament should have sought legal recourse by applying to the court for a variation of the bail terms.

Eni, partners begin new drilling phase in Ghana’s OCTP block

0

Eni Ghana, in collaboration with Vitol Upstream Ghana Ltd and the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC), has commenced drilling activities on the Sankofa East 1X Side Track 2 well in the Offshore Cape Three Points (OCTP) block, marking a new chapter in the growth of Ghana’s upstream oil and gas sector.

The operation, launched using the Deep Value Driller—a high-specification drillship with advanced automation technology—signals the partners’ renewed commitment to securing Ghana’s long-term energy future.

The rig, among the most advanced globally in terms of safety and performance, began operations offshore Ghana following its recent engagement in Côte d’Ivoire.

“This activity reflects the partners’ ongoing commitment to unlocking additional value from the Offshore Cape Three Points (OCTP) block, ensuring long-term production sustainability and contributing to Ghana’s energy security,” Eni Ghana said in a statement issued to the press.

Ahead of the drilling campaign, Eni and its OCTP partners undertook a broad stakeholder engagement programme involving over 800 individuals along the coastal belt. Fishermen, local leaders, and community members were consulted in a series of sensitisation efforts conducted in partnership with several national institutions, including the Environmental Protection Agency, the Petroleum Commission, the Ghana Maritime Authority, the Ghana Navy, the Fisheries Commission, and the Ghana National Canoe Fishermen Council.

Ghanaian media personality Okatakyie Afrifa-Mensah has made claims regarding the now-revoked appointment of Anne Sansa Daly to the Board of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), alleging that her nomination was politically motivated and influenced by U S-based Ghanaian journalist Kelvin Taylor.

Speaking on Good Evening Ghana with Paul Adom-Otchere on May 29, 2025, Afrifa-Mensah alleged that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) had promised Kelvin Taylor a political appointment. However, according to him, Taylor declined the offer and instead pushed for Anne Sansa Daly to be considered in his place.

“The NDC promised Kelvin Taylor an appointment, and he told the party leadership that if they wanted to honour that promise, they should give the position to Anne Sansa Daly,” Afrifa-Mensah claimed.

He further suggested that this request directly influenced her controversial appointment to the NHIA Board, which was later revoked by President John Dramani Mahama following widespread public criticism and questions surrounding Daly’s medical qualifications.

Afrifa-Mensah did not mince words, stating that Taylor’s alleged involvement compromised the vetting process and resulted in a lack of proper due diligence by the Council of State.

“Because of Kelvin, the Council of State failed to do due diligence,” he added, insinuating that political interference overshadowed the necessary scrutiny typically required for such appointments.

Anne Sansa Daly’s appointment was officially revoked by President Mahama in a letter dated May 23, 2025, after multiple reports questioned the authenticity of her medical credentials.

She has since been replaced by Professor Dr (Med) Ernest Yorke, a well-respected figure in the medical field.
