Two Suspected Illegal Miners Killed In Niger

No fewer than two men have been killed following a rock slide at an unauthorised mining site in the Farin-Doki area of Shiroro Local Government Area, Niger State.

In a statement by Spokesman for Niger State Police Command, Wasiu Abiodun, on Monday, disclosed that the incident occurred on the 13th of April, 2025.

Wasiu stated that the command received an information that a mining site in Farin-Doki area had collapsed.

He added that Police operatives attached to the Erena Division, alongside members of the local community were mobilised to the scene for a rescue operation.

The police said that preliminary investigations suggested that the deceased had embarked into the site during the night, likely to engage in illegal mining activities.

The statement partly reads: “During the operation, the bodies of two victims, identified as natives of Kano State, were recovered from the rubble.

“Sadly, they were confirmed dead at the scene. Their remains were subsequently conveyed to a hospital in Zumba for further procedures.

“Preliminary investigations suggested that the deceased had ventured into the site during the night, likely to engage in illegal mining activities.

“It was during these unauthorised operations that the rockslide tragically occurred.”
