Ex-President Muhammadu Buhari has urged members of the Progressive Governors Forum (PGF) to adopt a citizen-centric approach to governance, prioritizing the welfare of the people over personal or political interests.
He emphasised that leadership presents both challenges and opportunities, and finding the right balance between these elements is key to fostering national progress.
In a statement signed by his spokesman, Garba Shehu, and made available to the media on Wednesday, Buhari was quoted saying: “Leaders should accord importance to the welfare of the people, not themselves, offering his personal example of leaving office with the same physical assets he had before his presidency.
The ex-president expressed his gratitude to President Bola Tinubu’s administration for renovating his Kaduna residence, noting that although the exterior remained largely unchanged, significant improvements were made to the interior.
He also thanked the governors for their visit, acknowledging that while he had worked with several of them, some were new faces to him.
The Chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum, Governor Hope Uzodinma of Imo State, who was present during the visit, stated that their purpose was to extend Eid-el-Fitr greetings to the former president and convey their sincere gratitude and deep respect for his significant contributions to Nigeria’s democracy and the strengthening of their party.
“Many of us recall with pride the principled role you played in the founding of the APC. That legacy continues to shape our party’s identity and direction. We are especially gratified, only a few weeks ago, to hear your public affirmation that the APC remains your party of choice. That declaration could not have come at a better time. It reaffirmed your place as a pillar of our movement and provided reassurance to members of our party. Mr President, you are pan-Nigerian.
“Your Excellency, your legacy in Nigerian history is secure. You remain the only opposition candidate in our nation’s history to have defeated an incumbent. You not only won power, but you governed with calm resolve and handed over, with honour, to another APC president. For this, we are extremely grateful.”
