Lagos Farmer Rescues Sister-In-Law, Loses Wife In Canoe Accident

A farmer, known simply as Jesuyon, lost his wife, Abosede, after the canoe they were travelling in overturned in the Erekiti River, Lagos State.

A journalist, Deji Rambo, revealed that the farmer and his 25-year-old wife left their home on Sunday, March 30, 2025, to carry out some work on their farm.

To reach the farm, the couple boarded a canoe that took them across the Erekiti River to their destination.

After finishing their work on the farm, Jesuyon, his wife, and his 17-year-old sister-in-law, Mary, boarded another canoe for their return journey, but it capsized while on the way.

While in the river, the farmer managed to swim out, and during the struggle, “rescued the younger sister of his wife while the wife drowned,” a source informed the reporter.

The Lagos State Police Command spokesperson, Chief Superintendent of Police Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the incident on Sunday, April 6, stating that efforts were still underway to recover the body of Jesuyon’s wife.

“Based on the report, teams of Marine policemen and local divers were mobilised for a search and rescue operation. Efforts are ongoing to recover the missing body. The investigation is in progress,” the PPRO added.
