Organised Labour has issued warning to President Bola Tinubu’s administration to reverse the declaration of state of emergency in Rivers State.
The union noted that its may be forced to take action that could disrupt national economic activities if Governor Sim Fubara, his Deputy, Ngozi Nma and the state’s House of Assembly did not return to their various offices.
Recall that President Tinubu, on the 11th of March, 2025, made the suspension announcement, saying that Governor Fubara’s approach to militants threats on oil facilities wasn’t good enough.
Meanwhile, in a statement jointly signed by Rivers State Chairperson of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Alex Agwanwor; State Chairperson of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), Ikechukwu Onyefuru; and Chairperson of the Joint Negotiation Council (JNC), Chuku Emecheta on Tuesday, raised concerns about economic impact of Tinubu’s action.

The union described the suspension of the elected officers as premature and baseless decision by federal government.
The statement reads: “While the Rivers state Organized labour supports maintaining law and order, it insists that actions such as declaration of state of emergency and suspending elected officials must align with the Nigerian Constitution and protect workers from avoidable wage invalidity, non-payment of salaries at all levels, safety and security threats.
“The Rivers State Organized labour is appealing to the President, National Assembly, and Judiciary to urgently reverse the premature state of emergency and suspension of elected officials and return the state to normalcy.
“The federal government is strongly advised to engage in genuine dialogue to prevent further escalation of the issues in Rivers State. All workers are advised remain calm and continue their duties while awaiting a favorable response on the concerns raised.
“The Organized labour may be compelled to take strategic union actions which might disrupt national economic activities if our demands are not met within a reasonable timeframe.”
