Police have launched a manhunt for a gang of about 30 suspects who allegedly bombed five ATMs at a shopping mall in Hammanskraal, north of Pretoria, in the early hours of March 16.
During their escape, the gang shot and injured a private security officer.
According to Provincial police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo, the security guard was patrolling outside the mall when he was ambushed by suspects driving a bakkie. They stole his firearm before proceeding inside, where they also robbed another security guard of his cellphone.
The suspects then bombed five ATMs and broke into a shop, where they detonated a drop safe.
Masondo stated that police have not yet determined the amount of money stolen during the heist. The investigation is ongoing.
