In a significant move, President Bola Tinubu has approved a major policy change, raising the retirement age for doctors and other healthcare workers in Nigeria from 60 to 65 years.
This development was announced on Wednesday by Dr. Mannir Bature, National Publicity Secretary of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), in a statement released in Lagos.
According to Bature, the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Pate, has been directed to present the approval to the Council on Establishment through the Office of the Head of Service for finalization.
This policy shift was conveyed during a high-level meeting between Pate and key stakeholders in the health sector, including the NMA President, Prof. Bala Audu.
The meeting also discussed progress made regarding the welfare of doctors and other healthcare professionals in Nigeria.

Notably, the coordinating minister confirmed that outstanding salary arrears resulting from the adjustment of the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure (CONMESS) are set for payment.
“The necessary funds have been secured, and disbursement to beneficiaries will commence soon,” Bature quoted the minister as saying.
Furthermore, President Tinubu has approved corrections to consequential adjustments for both CONMESS and the Consolidated Health Salary Structure (CONHESS), arising from the implementation of the new minimum wage.
“The process to effect this correction is at an advanced stage, providing much-needed relief to doctors and other healthcare workers,” Bature stated.
The NMA has long championed increasing the retirement age of health workers to address brain drain, improve knowledge transfer, and enhance quality healthcare delivery.
This development is expected to bring significant relief to healthcare professionals in Nigeria.
