Attendees Once Abandoned PDP Rally Because They Were Only Paid For Two Hours – Atiku Recalls

Atiku Abubakar, Nigeria’s former Vice President, has shed light on the transactional nature of the country’s politics.

He revealed that attendees at a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) rally were paid to attend, but left before the event concluded because they were only paid for two hours.

Atiku shared this anecdote in response to comments made by Rotimi Amaechi, a former minister of transportation, at a recent event in Abuja.

Amaechi spoke about the transactional nature of some political rallies, sharing a story about an All Progressives Congress (APC) march where women were paid to attend, but showed up wearing ‘Jonathan for President’ attires instead of supporting the APC candidate.

Atiku echoed Amaechi’s comments, sharing a personal experience from a rally in Rivers State.

“When Odili was in office as governor of Rivers, we went on a rally. The entire stadium was filled to capacity. But before we could finish the rally, everybody had left. We were left alone. Then I asked what happened. He said they were paid for only two hours!” Atiku recalled.

This revelation shiws the pervasive nature of transactional politics in Nigeria, where attendees are often paid to attend rallies and events, rather than being motivated by genuine political convictions.
