Mystery Disease Outbreak Kills 79 In Congo

A mysterious flu-like disease has claimed the lives of at least 79 people in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The disease, which has affected over 376 people, has been reported in the “southern Kwango province” by health official, particularly in the Panzi health zone.

According to Roger Kamba, the country’s Health Minister, the symptoms of the disease include fever, headache, cough, and anemia.

Kamba also stated that 10 of the victims died due to a lack of blood transfusion, while 17 died from respiratory problems.

“The Congolese government is on general alert regarding this disease,” Kamba said.

Jean Kaseya, Director-General of the Africa Centre for Disease Control (CDC), noted that the discrepancy in the reported numbers is due to problems with surveillance and case definition.

Kaseya also stated that more details about the disease will be known within the next 48 hours as experts receive results from laboratory samples of infected people.

“First diagnostics are leading us to think it is a respiratory disease,” Kaseya said. “But we need to wait for the laboratory results. There are so many things we don’t know” about the disease — including whether it is infectious and how it is transmitted.¹
