Zambian Soldier Killed, Another Injured in Cross-Border Clash with DRC Soldiers –

A Zambian soldier has been killed, and another injured during a cross-border firefight between Zambia National Service (ZNS) troops and Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) soldiers on December 1, 2024, in the Kawama area of Ndola.

Defence Minister Ambrose Lufuma confirmed the incident, stating that the clash occurred while ZNS troops were conducting a patrol to curb smuggling along Mabungo Road. The confrontation began when ZNS troops intercepted a group of smugglers attempting to transport mealie meal into the DRC.

After the smugglers managed to flee, they reported the incident to DRC soldiers, who accused the Zambian troops of illegally crossing the border. This led to an exchange of gunfire, which resulted in the death of Staff Sergeant Corinthians Kaputa and the injury of Staff Sergeant Jazz Joseph Banda.

In response, Lufuma announced the formation of a Joint Investigation Team (JIT) to investigate the incident and prevent future clashes. He also urged citizens to avoid engaging in smuggling activities, emphasizing the government’s commitment to ensuring food security and upholding trade regulations.
