The Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) has called for the lifting of sanctions against Niger Republic by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), commending Nigerian Senators for rejecting military action against the West African country.
The ACF in a statement by its Publicity Secretary, Professor Tukur Muhammad-Baba, sought more dialogue with the Niger military junta to prevent a further breakdown of talks following the expiration of the one-week deadline earlier given to the regime to restore democratic rule in the country.
The statement read, “We at the ACF would like to reiterate our condemnation of the coup and demand that the personal safety of President Mohamed Bazoum and members of his government be guaranteed by the coup leaders.
“Nigeria and Niger have had brotherly relations over the years and the ACF upon reviewing the latest political impasse, economic sanctions and expiration of the one-week deadline given to the military junta in Niger has come to the conclusion that dialogue remains the best option to avoid a catastrophic occurrence of events between the two nations and the West African sub-region.
We should utilise all available goodwill, diplomatic, political, economic and human assets to win back the confidence of the people of Niger, who have, historically, come to regard Nigeria as a Big Brother.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has met privately with Burkina Faso’s interim military leader, Captain Ibrahim Traore, over a situation that might not be unconnected with the Niger crisis.
While the details of the meeting were not clear as of the time of filing this report, there are speculations that the meeting was part of Putin’s plans to meet with French-speaking West African countries ruled by the military.
A short clip of the Russian leader’s meeting with Traore was posted by Jackson Hinkle on social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, on Monday.
Traore is the world’s youngest currently serving leader after becoming the interim leader of Burkina Faso following the coup on 30th September 2022 which ousted interim president Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba.

The Osun government says it will commence free medical care and surgical palliative for the residents of the state.
Speaking at a news conference on Tuesday, Jola Akintola, the state’s commissioner for Health, said the medical care programme tagged “Imole free medical care” which was the second phase, would serve as palliative to cushion the effect of the petrol subsidy removal.
According to NAN, the commissioner said the first phase of the programme, which was carried out between February and March, catered for 22,000 people.
“As a way of touching the lives of sick people in the state, the governor assembled qualified health workers in the state, spearheaded by those at the Uniosun Teaching Hospital, to take health care to our people,” he said.
Although the initial plan was to have 2,000 people taken care of at each of the nine federal constituencies, which equals 18,000 people, the medical team, however, ended up taking care of 22,000 people.”
Akintola said the medical palliative would be flagged off on August 16 at the Ilesa general hospital.
According to the commissioner, the palliative would include general surgical care, eye surgery, and giving out of eyeglasses which would be provided free by the state government.
