Subsidy: Uniosun expends over N31million on palliatives

The administration of Osun State University stated on Monday that it had spent more than N31 million on providing palliative care for its staff as a result of the subsidy being abolished.

Professor Clement Adebooye, the university’s vice chancellor, explained that the institution’s multi-campus structure made the gesture necessary in response to questions from the media in Osogbo. Ademola Adeleke, the state governor, received gratitude from him as well for permitting the palliatives.

In the words of the executive governor himself, “The management of the university has decided to make a recommendation to the executive governor in the absence of the governing council to sanction payment of one-off palliatives to our personnel. He also granted the payment. This is due to the commitment of our workers, who frequently travel between campuses to complete various tasks.

“We pay every junior staff member N20,000, every major career staff member N25,000, those above that level N30,000, and the senior staff member N40,000.”

“We have a category of workers we call support staff; they are not our permanent staff; we contract them to support the services of the university, and we paid each of them N10,000. The principal officials received N75,000, and we also have a category of staff we call administrative staff.

“The university spent a total of thirty-one million, six hundred and twenty-seven thousand naira, to pay for these one-off palliatives and other things we have done to support them.” We have revived our moribund buses back on the road, and I’m sure by now the Provost of our Colleges will utilize these buses for committee jobs between major towns and our campuses so that the cost of transportation on them will be reduced and the staff members will have an ease of life and ease of travel.
