Gov. Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia State has said that his preference for the late Professor Uche Ikonne as his successor was because he saw in him the strength of character, zeal and commitment to actualise the dreams of the founding fathers of the state.
Ikpeazu who gave the explanation during a colloquium in honour of the late governorship candidate of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, at the Michael Okpara Auditorium Umuahia, lamented the demise of the late Professor of Optometry.
Professor Ikonne who was the immediate- past Vice Chancellor of the Abia State University Uturu, died on January 25 following an ailment that put him out of circulation for nearly two months.
Gov Ikpeazu who expressed pain over the demise of Ikonne, said he supported his emergence as the PDP flag bearer because he needed a successor “who is courageous and committed to the realization of the dreams of Abia founding fathers.”
The Governor who said he had desired to hand over to a competent successor, said Abia was the biggest loser of Ikonne’s unfortunate death.
Ahead of the May 29 inauguration of the President-elect, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, the National Chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress APC, Senator Abdullahi Adamu and other party leaders the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila on Tuesday paid a visit on him.
Others who visited Tinubu who arrived in the country on Monday from France were the Ekiti State Governor Biodun Oyebanji, Senator Godswill Akpabio and Senator Barau Jibrin.
The list also included Senator Olamilekan Adeola, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, Senator Emmanuel Bwacha, Senator Tokunbo Abiru and Hon. James Faleke.
Adamu, who like Tinubu had been out of the country for about two weeks had resumed at the national secretariat of the party on Tuesday where he spent barely an hour before leaving for Tinubu’s house in the highbrow Asokoro.
The chairman resumed a day to the expiration of the seven days ultimatum issued to him last week by the National Vice Chairman, North-west of the party, Salihu Moh. Lukman threatened to drag him to court if he refuses to convene a meeting of the National Executive Committee NEC of the party.
While details of the visit were still sketchy on Tuesday night, Akpabio told reporters that his records will earn him the Senate Presidency.
A fresh motion on notice seeking to stop the President-Elect, Bola Tinubu from being inaugurated as Nigeria’s new President on May 29, 2023, has been instituted at the Court of Appeal in Abuja.
The fresh suit is instituted by a presidential candidate in the 2019 Presidential election and constitutional lawyer, Ambrose Owuru and the defunct political party, Hope Democratic Party (HDP).
Owuru prayed the Court of Appeal Abuja to prohibit President Muhammadu Buhari; Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami; and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from inaugurating the President-elect on May 29.
Owuru predicated his grouse against inauguration of Tinubu or anybody else as successor to Buhari on the ground that he is the constitutionally adjudged winner of the 2019 election and has not spent his tenure as required by law.
Among others, Owuru insisted that Buhari has been usurping his tenure of office since 2019 because the Supreme Court has not determined his petition filed in 2019 in which he challenged the purported declaration of Buhari as the election winner.
The outgoing Governor of Ebonyi State, David Umahi has a few weeks to hand over power to the incoming administration, sworn-in six permanent secretaries and seven anti-corruption committee members in the state.
Umahi, while inaugurating the permanent secretaries on Tuesday, assured them that they will not be removed by the incoming administration led by the governor-elect, Francis Nwifuru.
He, however, vowed not to interfere with Nwifuru’s administration.
Addressing the appointees, Umahi enjoined them to be upright in the discharge of their responsibilities.
“Let me congratulate members of the anti-corruption commission, let me hope that they understand what they have signed for; to be impeccable, to be upright. So, first, they have to declare their assets, they are going to be of great help to the next administration.”
“To the permanent secretaries, congratulations. Go back to your respective places of work, your tenure is not ending with me but the only person that I am posting now is the permanent secretary, Lagos Liaison. The rest will be done after I have consulted the governor-elect.”
