Casemiro becomes Manchester United’s fourth big signing of the summer when he joins from Real Madrid in the coming days.
The Brazilian international will join Tyrell Malacio, Christian Eriksen and Lisandro Martinez in making big signings, and much is expected of a player who has won the Champions League five times.
Casemiro is expected to be unveiled to Man Utd supporters ahead of Monday’s Premier League match against Liverpool, and his number in the squad is expected to be announced then. The two clubs have already announced that they have an agreement in principle, so the transfer is just a formality at this stage.
In Spain, however, it is reported that a decision has already been made on which shirt the 30-year-old will wear.
Casemiro will wear the number 18 shirt at Manchester United, following in the footsteps of Old Trafford legend Paul Scholes, another central midfielder with a reputation for taking on difficult situations.
Casemiro will not be wearing jersey number 18 for the first time in his career, as the central midfielder began his life at Real Madrid in this jersey with Castilla. He donned the number 38 shirt when he moved to the first team, then switched to the number 16 shirt in the 2013/14 season. After a year at Porto, he donned the number 14 shirt and has worn it ever since.
Casemiro seems to prefer the number 8, as he started his career in Sao Paulo with this number on his back, but changed it to 28 during his last two games at the club.

Casemiro will become the sixth player to wear the number 18 shirt for Manchester United in the Premier League era.
Scholes is the one most easily associated with the shirt, having worn it for 14 years, while Ashley Young has also worn it for eight seasons.
