Which Tribe Is The Oldest Tribe In Africa?

The San people who were famously called “Bushmen’’ by the European Colonists are a hunter- gatherer population who lived in South Africa. The tribe speaks the Khoikhoi and San languages from which other languages have evolved over time.

According to Cnn.com, the San tribe has been living in Southern Africa for at least 30,000 years and they are believed to be the oldest African tribe. The San have the most diverse and distinct DNA than any other indigenous African group. They lived in small, nomadic groups of around 25 individuals, finding shelter under rocky outcrops and in caves, or erecting nonpermanent dwellings.

They fed on kills from hunting down envelopes and other animals, and their way of life was nomadic. The Bushmen were the original creators of the rock and cave arts and paintings which cut across the region. In this present day, some of the San people have gone into hiding because of the overexploitation from governments.

Women have a high status in San society, are greatly respected, and may be leaders of their own family groups. They make important family and group decisions and claim ownership of water holes and foraging areas. Women are mainly involved in the gathering of food, but may also take part in hunting.
