Her scheduled execution on Sunday, March 16, has sparked public outcry, with her family and concerned Kenyans urging the government to intervene and plead for clemency.

Gatundu North MP Elijah Kururia, during a live TikTok session, claimed that President William Ruto had reached out to the Vietnamese government and was awaiting feedback.

Hours later, Kururia shared an alleged response from Vietnam that crushed the hopes of Nduta’s family and Kenyans.

The supposed response from the leader of Vietnam stated that they do not interfere when courts sentence even Vietnamese drug dealers.

As per the alleged response, the response is not about citizenship but protection of children from killer substances.

Has government intervened in Margaret Nduta’s case?

However, Foreign Affairs Principal Secretary Korir Sing’Oei responded minutes later, confirming that he had personally engaged Vietnam’s Deputy Minister regarding Nduta’s case.

Sing’Oei revealed that Vietnamese authorities are currently reviewing Kenya’s petition to halt the execution.

“I conveyed to Madam Hang the anxiety of the Kenyan people on the impending execution of our national and reiterated our request for a stay of execution to allow our two countries to find a path to resolving the issue. I am grateful for Madam Hang’s assurance that our petition is under consideration by her country’s authorities,” said Sing’Oei.

This development has raised concerns over how the MP took up a government role and misled Kenyans on such a sensitive matter.

Critics have reminded the public that only the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has the mandate to handle international diplomatic matters, and an MP has no access to official communication between states.
