Uhuru appointing Chebukati

Chebukati became the chairman of the electoral body after Uhuru okayed his appointment following the approval from the National Assembly.

He officially began his tour of duty in January 2017 alongside six commissioners with a bigger task being managing the 2017 elections whose results were disputed and later nullified by the Supreme Court due to election malpractices.

Chebukati then spearheaded the repeat election which Uhuru emerged as the winner securing his second term.

The deceased also oversaw the 2022 polls where President William Ruto beat former Prime Minister Raila Odinga before Azimio moved to court citing irregularities.

Supreme Court upheld the election outcome and vindicated Chebukati who was fingered in the disputed polls.

He retired in January 2023 after his term ended and proceeded to live a private life. He was pronounced dead on Friday, February 21, 2025.

“I have received the news of the passing of former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission Chairperson Wafula Chebukati with profound sorrow.

Chebukati was a principled and diligent leader who served the nation with integrity. His death is a great loss to our country,” Ruto’s statement confirming his demise read in part.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends during this difficult time.”
