ODM Kisii County Senator Richard Onyonka has vehemently defended his position regarding the ongoing controversy surrounding the development of Kenya’s airports. Onyonka responded directly to his party colleague, Hon. Junet Mohamed, who had previously labeled some ODM members as “saboteurs” for questioning the role of Adani Group in the airport project.
Onyonka firmly rejected the accusation, clarifying that no one in their camp had ever opposed the development of the airport itself. “NONE of us that you refer to as saboteurs, has ever opposed the development of our airport,” Onyonka stated, seeking to clear up the misunderstanding that has been brewing within the party. The Senator emphasized that their position against Adani Group’s involvement was based on a desire for transparency and adherence to the law. “Our firm position AGAINST Adani was premised on our wish for the process to be done with TRANSPARENCY, OPENNESS, RESPONSIVENESS, and within the LAW. That is OVERSIGHT,” Onyonka explained.
The remarks come amid a growing debate over the terms of Adani’s deal to expand and operate Kenya’s key airports. Critics of the deal, including Onyonka and others in the ODM camp, have raised concerns about the lack of clarity surrounding the project, questioning whether the deal was negotiated in a transparent and fair manner. The issue has sparked division within ODM, with some members supporting the government’s decision to partner with Adani, while others call for greater scrutiny.
Onyonka’s defense highlights the tension between party loyalty and the need for accountability in governance. His call for transparency and lawfulness echoes broader concerns among Kenyans about the integrity of large-scale infrastructure projects. As the debate continues, Onyonka’s statement underscores the importance of ensuring that public projects are executed with the utmost scrutiny and integrity.
