Kenyan lawyer and activist Miguna Miguna has criticized fellow Kenyans celebrating Donald Trump’s election victory in 2024, highlighting the impact of U.S. foreign policy in Africa. Miguna, known for his bold critiques, expressed concern that Kenyans supporting Trump are overlooking critical issues, equating their support to Palestinians cheering for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. He argued that both major U.S. political parties—Republicans and Democrats—have historically promoted imperialism in Africa, with policies that often disregard the continent’s welfare.
Miguna pointed to Trump’s past record, which includes controversial racial policies, arguing that Africans who support him are, in essence, endorsing these policies. “Africans cheering Trump’s election are like Palestinians cheering Netanyahu’s re-election. They are cheering for things like Jim Crow laws, mass deportations, and widespread racist violence by white supremacist groups,” Miguna stated. He questioned if this enthusiasm stemmed from “stupidity, naivety, or primitivity.” In his view, both the Republicans and Democrats fail to prioritize Africa’s interests, instead focusing on policies that often serve global financial powers, such as the IMF and World Bank. Miguna urged Kenyans to critically assess the impact of U.S. foreign policies, regardless of which party holds office. He cautioned that any new administration would likely continue policies that could disadvantage African countries, especially through economic frameworks that reinforce dependency.
Ultimately, Miguna’s comments serve as a reminder for Africans to consider how foreign leaders’ policies affect Africa. He called for a more nuanced understanding of U.S. politics, urging Kenyans to look beyond partisan loyalty and consider Africa’s place in the broader geopolitical landscape.
