The Tana River County Assembly has come under scrutiny for allegedly misusing funds allocated for the construction of the Speaker’s residence. The Senate Public Accounts Committee, investigating the county’s finances, discovered that the project, initially allocated Sh100 million, had not begun even three years after the funds were released.
Documents presented to the Auditor General revealed that the Speaker’s residence was already built, raising concerns about how the funds were utilized. The committee, under the leadership of Homa Bay Senator Moses Kajwang, has labelled the County Assembly a “criminal enterprise” for the alleged misuse of public funds.
Senator Kajwang emphasized the need for transparency, urging the Auditor General to thoroughly investigate the matter. “The office of the Auditor General must establish what goes into this,” he stated. The Auditor General has also confirmed that various financial issues dating back to the 2020/21 fiscal year remain unresolved.
The governor, however, was unable to provide a satisfactory explanation for the construction works of the proposed county headquarters. While the audit reports indicate potential misuse of funds, further investigations are needed to uncover the truth.
