NARC Kenya leader Martha Karua is reading mischief after the University of Nairobi Council announced the termination of Prof. Stephen Gitahi Kiama as the institution’s Vice-Chancellor. Taking to her X account, Karua said the termination of Professor Kiama was shrouded in controversy.
She accused Ruto’s government of meddling in the affairs of the University of Nairobi. She wondered whether there was an illegal task that Professor Kiama did not accomplish, leading to his termination.
”Another controversy shrouded in opaqueness, what exactly does the Ruto regime want with the University of Nairobi. Is there a task the imported chancellor @Prof_PatrickV is supposed to accomplish that requires the irregular removal of Prof. Kiama” she tweeted. In a letter dated Monday, October 14, Kiama’s services as an employee of UoN were terminated on September 27, 2024.
The letter signed by Chairman of Council Chair Prof. Amukowa Anangwe also stated that the reasons for Kiama’s termination were communicated to him. Just recently, the Council rejected Vice Chancellor Prof. Stephen Kiama’s request for a second term.Â
Kiama was appointed the UoN Vice Chancellor on January 5, 2020, on a five-year term, taking over from Prof Isaac Mbeche who had been serving as VC in an acting capacity since July 2019, when Prof Peter Mbithi was sent on compulsory leave.
