MP Moses Kirima has revealed that the recent impeachment of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua was motivated by the expectation that Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki would be appointed as the next Deputy President.
Kirima disclosed that the Meru MPs supported the motion to impeach Gachagua with the belief that Kindiki, who is well-acquainted with the issues facing Meru residents, would take over the deputy presidency.
“We Meru MPs signed that impeachment on the strength that Kindiki is going to be appointed as the next DP.” This statement highlights the strategic calculations behind the impeachment.
Following Gachagua’s impeachment, Kirima expressed concerns about the political landscape, noting that there has been significant lobbying from various political figures who are now eyeing the deputy presidency. He mentioned that individuals such as National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah and Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga have shown interest in the position, which has complicated the situation for Kindiki’s anticipated ascendance.
The impeachment of Gachagua was based on charges presented to the National Assembly, and Kirima emphasized that it was not influenced by President William Ruto. He insisted, “I want to insist that there was no time William Ruto called us to impeach Gachagua. It is the charges read in Parliament.” This assertion aims to clarify that the decision was made independently by the MPs rather than being a directive from the president.
