Constitutional Lawyer Charles Kanjama Laughs Off Azimio’s Letter to ICC, Claims Why It Wouldn’t Work

The Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Alliance’s decision to write a letter to the International Criminal Court (ICC) on claims of police brutality against its supporters during the recent mass protests, have attracted mixed reactions on whether their move would yield any fruits.

The opposition camp argued that the police under the supervision of the Inspector General of Police Japhet Koome used excessive force to deal with the protestors, alleging that a number of them were shot dead and others injured despite staging peaceful demos.

On Sunday, Raila further claimed that the team would forward the name of the Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, on claims that he said the government was ready to deal with him once and for all.

Speaking with NTV on Tuesday, Constitutional Lawyer Charles Kanjama laughed off the letter, saying the International community and the Hague-based court is not blind to see that the opposition is seeking attention to make political scores.

“The perception of the scholars of international crimes who are aware of the Kenyan case is that what is happening is more of ‘hot air’ than reality, and that it is more of political posturing, more of an attempt to use the ‘big brother’ out there to achieve local or domestic political goals,” said Kanjama.

In his recent remarks, IG Koome argued that the Azimio side was seemingly against the Meru Community, maintaining that he will not be intimidated to do his duty as mandated by the Kenyan people, and that is to protect lives and property of citizens.

DP Gachagua on his side said that the government would stand to defend Koome and the police, saying no excess force was used against the Azimio protestors as claimed by the Raila Odinga-led camp.
