The Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC) has announced scheduled electricity interruptions in three regions on Wednesday, April 30, 2025, as part of routine maintenance works.

The company listed multiple areas in Mt. Kenya, the North Rift and Coast regions. The interruptions are expected to last for between four to nine hours, depending on the region.
KPLC emphasised that these planned outages are necessary to facilitate the maintenance and upgrading of power lines, the connection of new customers, and the replacement of lines affected by road construction.

Kenya Power tariff categories
In other news, KPLC clarified why many Kenyans are receiving fewer electricity units for the same amount of money, attributing the issue to tariff classifications based on consumption patterns.
Customers who consistently use less than 30 units per month over three consecutive billing cycles qualify for the Lifeline Tariff, which offers electricity at the lowest rate of KSh 15 per unit.
However, if a customer’s average monthly usage exceeds 30 units during this period, they are automatically moved to a higher tariff category, either the Domestic Ordinary Tariff (for 31–100 units) or the Commercial Tariff (for usage above 100 units), resulting in a higher per-unit cost and fewer tokens for the same spending.
