ODM leader Raila Odinga is under increasing pressure from his Nyanza support base to end his political alliance with President William Ruto. This follows recent actions that have raised doubts about the alliance’s integrity and purpose.
The situation worsened after President Ruto appointed Raila’s nephew, Jaoko Oburu, as his economic adviser. This sparked online backlash, especially among the youth, who accused the alliance of promoting family interests over public welfare.
Tensions escalated when Siaya Governor James Orengo and Kisumu Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o openly criticized the national government. They accused it of undermining devolution and failing to fund key development projects. Governor Nyong’o warned that Ruto’s leadership is reversing democratic progress, while Orengo insisted he would not be a puppet to any regime.
The criticisms, combined with unfulfilled development promises in the Nyanza region, have led to growing dissatisfaction. Political analyst Martin Andati noted that the internal divisions in ODM reflect deep frustration among supporters. He also stated that the alliance appears unstable as top allies express disapproval.
With ODM lawmakers finding it hard to justify the unity pact, Raila’s continued cooperation with Ruto is increasingly questioned. The outcome of this tension could significantly impact Kenya’s political dynamics ahead of the 2027 elections.
