BBC Sets Date To Reveal Who Ordered Fire on Kenya’s Youth During 2024 Finance Bill Protest

A year after Kenya’s darkest day of youth-led protest, the British Broadcasting Corporation(BBC) is preparing to air a hard-hitting documentary titled ‘Blood Parliament’—an investigative deep dive into the deadly crackdown on peaceful demonstrators who stormed Parliament in June 2024. The documentary is set to release April 28 via BBC Africa Eye and aims to uncover the full truth behind the killing of at least 19 people, mostly Gen Z protesters, by police gunfire.

The protests, sparked by the deeply unpopular Finance Bill 2024, began online but quickly exploded onto the streets. Many young Kenyans felt betrayed by a government that promised to listen but instead imposed new taxes on essentials like fuel and motor vehicles.

On June 26, things turned tragic when demonstrators breached the Parliament compound, setting part of it ablaze and taking the ceremonial mace—a symbol of state power. Police opened fire, injuring over 160 people and killing nearly 20, including medics and bystanders. Ruto, firing the cabinet is not enough!Despite President Ruto rejecting the bill days later, calling the violence unfortunate, no real accountability has followed. Ruto pledged to punish rogue officers, but as of April 2025, not a single senior official has been held responsible.

BBC Africa Eye, known for bold investigations from Nigeria to Sudan, is stepping in to do what the Kenyan state hasn’t—name those behind the violence. The program promises new footage, eyewitness testimonies and digital forensics that may finally bring clarity to what happened inside Parliament’s gates.

This isn’t just a local story. Diplomats from the United States and European Union condemned the crackdown. The African Union and United Nations also weighed in. For Gen Z, this documentary could reignite the demand for justice that has gone unanswered. Kenyans online are already calling this a turning point. “The blood that was spilled will no longer be swept under the rug,” one user posted.

The upcoming BBC documentary could be a game-changer—shining a light on the truth, demanding justice, and making sure the lives lost aren’t forgotten.
