“We’re Drowning in Debt” UDA MP Wamuchomba Begs China to Grant Ruto Mercy, Not More Loans

In rare moment of raw honesty from within the ruling party, Githunguri MP Gathoni Wamuchomba has made a heartfelt appeal during President William Ruto’s visit to China: let Kenya receive grants, not more crushing loans.

“May our President Ruto find favour in China to get grants, not loans,” Wamuchomba pleaded. “Kenyans are suffocating under Ksh10 trillion in debt.”

Her emotional statement strikes at the heart of Kenya’s growing economic anxiety, with millions of citizens feeling the pressure of a ballooning national debt that continues to squeeze public services, drive up taxes, and limit growth.

The MP’s words reveal a deep fear shared by many—that every new loan inked abroad digs the country further into a hole from which it may not easily climb out.

Wamuchomba’s message is not just to Beijing—it’s also a quiet cry to State House.

As President Ruto courts Chinese leaders for infrastructure funding, her plea reflects a sobering reality: the patience of ordinary Kenyans is wearing thin.

The promise of roads and rails can no longer drown out the pain of rising fuel prices, heavy taxation, and delayed salaries for civil servants.

Even from within his own UDA party, Wamuchomba’s message was clear: it’s time to change course.

“We are not asking for luxury—we are asking for relief,” she said.

While China has been a major financier of Kenya’s large-scale infrastructure over the past decade, concerns remain about the sustainability of debt agreements, especially when they lack transparency or burden future generations.

Wamuchomba’s words cut through political spin and diplomatic language. In a country desperate for financial breathing room, her appeal is not just political—it’s personal. And many Kenyans are silently echoing it.
