A few weeks ago, Edward Waruguru came home from work excited to spend some time with his five-month-old daughter, whom he had left under the care of a then-newly employed househelp.

The 27-year-old father and his wife had just hired a daytime nanny to help look after their baby, so that they could work on their two small businesses in Githurai 44.

The agreement between the couple and the domestic worker was that she was supposed to report to work at 9am, so that they could, in turn, leave home to attend to their businesses.

“She could barely keep time. She could come to work at any time she felt like, making us late for work. This was the first red flag. I even told her to ensure she comes to work on time so that we could leave home to work, and return on time, but she would have none of that,” he told TUKO in an interview.

Edward’s suspicions

On February 13, 2025, while Edward was bonding with his child, he decided to take a photo of her, just like a father would.

“It was supposed to be a normal photo, but a day later, as I was zooming in on the photo, I noticed my baby’s tiny fingers were sort of bleeding. I was taken aback, and I immediately alerted my wife, telling her that something was amiss,” he narrated.

His wife asked the new nanny about it, and she explained that she was cutting the baby’s nails and had hurt her accidentally.

“First, no one asked her to do so, and secondly, the extent of the hurt on the baby’s fingers showed that it was not an accident. This did not sit well with me. My wife, however, believed her explanation,” he said.

Besides the injured fingers, the baby’s cheeks were sore and red, while her eye was red.

“I told my wife of my suspicions that our child was probably being abused by the housegirl. I just had this gut feeling that something was happening to our baby while we were away. This is when I decided to install the home CCTV to just see if my baby was safe in her hands,” he stated.

He purchased the nanny cams and installed them strategically in the house to find out if his suspicions were true.

And indeed they were.

As shown in a video obtained exclusively by TUKO, the househelp was captured smothering the child with a napkin to muffle her cry.

“It was actually by luck that I did not delete the footage from the CCTV. It was too long and uneventful, and I nearly deleted it. But later, when I reviewed it again, I came across that disturbing part,” he said.

Edward said he has lost all trust in nannies and prefers to look after his child.

“It is so sad that someone can hurt such an innocent baby,” he added.

“God protect all the young ones left in the hands of strangers out of trust.”

Juliet Moragwa

“Why would one harm an innocent baby? I’ll always treat children nicely, whether mine or not, they are just innocent.”

Divinah Ong’era

“I have dealt with these people for 10 years, but for sure it’s God who takes care of our innocent kids, and whoever judges you because of a househelp, they know nothing.”

Aquino Chogo said:

“I almost resigned from work due to househelp chronicles…if it wasn’t for my mother!”

Githurai househelp caught on home CCTV

As TUKO.co.ke exclusively reported, the Githurai househelp was caught on the home CCTV footage using a napkin forcefully to muffle the baby’s cry.

In the clip, she seemed focused on a TV show while feeding the baby, who was visibly uncomfortable.

To stop her crying, she was spotted forcefully putting the napkin on the baby’s mouth.

The family is now seeking ways to have her brought to book.
