A total of twenty seven constituencies are at the risk of being scrapped off in 2027 if the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission IEBC does not take immediate action, former government official Irungu Nyakera has stated.
According to him, the constituencies were formed in 2027 during the promulgation of the constitution but did not meet the threshold for a constituency as per their population.
The issue was to be solved by delimiting other boundaries by IEBC; an exercise that was to be done by March 2024. However, due to lack of commissioners at the IEBC, the exercise did not take place.
Nyakera thus called for rapid formation of IEBC so that they can work on the same to avert a future crisis.
The constituencies include: Bura, Galole, Lamu West, Lamu East, Mvita, Voi, Wundanyi, Mwatate, Mbeere North, Isiolo North, Isiolo South, Marakwet East and Keiyo North.
Keiyo South, Samburu East, Samburu North, Igembe North, Igembe Central, Igembe South, Kuria East, Kuria West, Teso North, Teso South, Turkana East, Turkana North, North Horr and Moyale.
