Nation Media Group Announces Major Overhaul, Activist Hanifa Among New Hires in Newsroom Shake-Up

Nation Media Group (NMG) has announced a wave of editorial changes, signaling a bold shift in strategy aimed at aligning with evolving media consumption habits.

In a memo issued by Editor-in-Chief Joe Ageyo, the company revealed the restructuring would focus on content innovation, digital transformation, and regional impact.

One of the most notable appointments is activist Hanifa Farsafi, a vocal Kenya Kwanza critic, who now joins the Daily Nation as a columnist.

Hanifa shared her debut opinion piece on Tuesday morning, unapologetically titled “We’re not going anywhere, and we won’t wait for your permission.”

Another new face is Nelson Amenya, known for his exposé on the Adani deal, who has also secured a position at the Kimathi Street-based media house.

The editorial shake-up also features several internal promotions aimed at streamlining operations and deepening digital engagement.

James Smart, formerly a senior news anchor, will now serve as the Managing Editor for Broadcast and New Media.

Washington Gikunju, who was overseeing planning and content hubs, steps into a newly created role as Managing Editor, Content Strategy.

His new responsibility includes harmonizing workflows across all print and digital platforms, with lead editors reporting directly to him.

Long-serving editor Harry Misiko moves into Gikunju’s division to supervise content hubs and news desk operations.

In regional changes, Kennedy Kimanthi, previously the Nakuru Regional Editor, has been reassigned to Nairobi as News Editor.

His Nakuru post will now be filled by Brygettes Ngana, who has also served in the newsroom for years.

Ageyo commended the team for embracing change and urged full support for colleagues stepping into new roles.

He emphasized that the media house must stay ahead of content trends across East Africa.

The shift comes amid industry-wide challenges and a growing push for digital-first strategies.

NMG has a strong presence in Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania, and aims to strengthen its grip through enhanced digital output.

The move is expected to reshape the company’s editorial direction significantly.

It also signals NMG’s commitment to bold voices and fresh perspectives in its newsroom.

As traditional media continues to face disruption, Nation Media appears ready to evolve.

And with firebrands like Hanifa onboard, its future content could stir even more national conversation.
