Rigathi Gachagua, the former Deputy President of Kenya, has announced that Kenyans will have to wait for over a year before knowing who the opposition candidate will be to challenge President William Ruto in the 2027 general elections.
Speaking at the funeral of Pastor Joseph Nzola in Katelembo, Machakos County, Gachagua dismissed claims of division within the opposition, blaming President Ruto for attempting to divide opposition leaders ahead of the election.
Gachagua reassured the public that the opposition would stay united and work together to remove Ruto from power.
He confirmed that talks were ongoing with other key opposition figures, including Kalonzo Musyoka, Eugene Wamalwa, George Natembeya, and Fred Matiang’i.
He also stressed that they would delay announcing their political plans until December 2026 to avoid being sabotaged.
Meanwhile, Kalonzo Musyoka, the Wiper Party leader, also addressed the gathering, condemning threats from President Ruto’s government against opposition leaders.
He highlighted an incident where thugs attacked a church in Mwiki, where he was attending a service, warning that such actions could lead to violence.
Gachagua’s comments come as rumors of a split within the opposition continue to circulate. Recently, Jubilee Party Secretary-General Jeremiah Kioni endorsed Fred Matiang’i for the presidency, fueling further speculation about potential divisions within the opposition ahead of 2027.
