‘Raila is The One Telling ODM Leaders to Back Ruto and Others to Oppose Him’ Political Analyst Explains Why

Political analyst Martin Andati believes that Raila Odinga has given ODM leaders permission to criticize President Ruto’s administration while simultaneously cooperating with it.
According to Andati, this dual approach allows Raila to remain flexible as he weighs his political direction ahead of 2027. If Ruto’s performance falters, Raila can distance himself, but if it improves, he may claim credit through his allies in government.
This calculated ambiguity was evident at the burial of George Oduor, Raila’s bodyguard, where ODM leaders publicly clashed in front of both Raila and Ruto. Siaya Governor James Orengo and Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna strongly criticized the government.
Orengo stressed the need to defend constitutional rights and warned against being sycophants. Sifuna raised issues such as delays in county disbursements and mistreatment of students, urging Ruto to take action.
In contrast, ODM leaders like Junet Mohamed, Oburu Oginga, and Opondo Kaluma defended the cooperation with the government, citing access to development projects and fair distribution of national resources.
President Ruto, in response, reminded Sifuna of his ODM roots and advised caution. Meanwhile, Embakasi East MP Babu Owino stated he would only support Ruto if the education sector’s challenges were resolved.
