“George, since your unexpected departure, I’ve seen your friends online share all sorts of interesting nicknames for you. I remember Mama saying that there were too many Georges and Davids around us, so everyone else got nicknames, but you? You got to keep your name, George, because you were the original and had the longest tenure,” she recalled.

Winnie recalled George moving in with the family around 1995, describing him as a ‘gentle giant’ who spent his free time teaching her football between police reserve training sessions.

“I can still picture you on the veranda, ball in hand, waiting for me after school, probably thinking, ‘If I can teach this tough little girl just one thing, then I can save the world!’ And you did George, you saved our world countless times.”

She shared childhood memories of George showing her how to use gadgets, something she playfully thought was training for a ‘secret life as a spy’, But beneath the humour was a metaphor for their bond: George was the action, she was the thinker.

“Now that you have left an unfillable gap in the team, I don’t know if I’m also required in the action,” she wrote.

The tribute also touched on the emotional and physical sacrifices George made, constantly prioritising the safety of Raila and his family, even at the expense of his own comfort.

“These people don’t understand how far we’ve come on this journey, it’s not easy, but we do it because of the love of the boss; some people think this life is fun but it’s not a joke,” she added.

In her closing words, Winnie expressed her deep sorrow at the loss of someone who had been so instrumental in their lives. She ended her tribute with a heartfelt farewell, saying:

“Until we meet again, my brother. Rest in peace. Thank you for everything.”
