Critical Medical Supply Shortage Hinders Kala-azar Response in Wajir

Wajir County is facing a severe challenge in its battle against Kala-azar, a serious parasitic disease. Right now, essential medical supplies are in short supply, and this is making it tough to effectively manage the situation.

Health officials are urgently calling for more test kits and medications to tackle the disease, which is caused by the Leishmania parasite.

Since March 20, 2025, over 500 cases have been reported in Wajir, with 8 tragic deaths. This has sparked an urgent need for action. Doctors Without Borders (MSF) is stepping up, urging for immediate medical support to help these communities. They stress that without the necessary resources, treatment and control measures are being delayed.

MSF has pointed out that Kala-azar, often overlooked as a neglected tropical disease (NTD), is suffering from a lack of both diagnostic and therapeutic resources. To address this, MSF is working hand-in-hand with local health authorities to set up temporary treatment centers. Their goal is to implement strict infection control practices to curb the spread.

Kala-azar is no small threat. It’s the most severe form of Leishmaniasis and, if left untreated, has a mortality rate of up to 95%. It’s the second deadliest parasitic disease after Malaria, highlighting the need for quick and decisive action.
