Maureen Nyaboke, the mother of Baby Sagini, who was violently attacked by his guardians, tearfully shared that she was sent away from the children’s home.

She had travelled from Kisii with the help of former Nairobi governor Mike Sonko to gain access to the child, who requires critical eye surgery to regain his sight after the brutal attack three years ago.

However, the home allegedly refused to release the child, citing that he had been placed there through the court and, as such, should be released through the same process.

“I came all the way from Kisii because I was told Sonko had offered to help my son. Upon reaching the children’s home, they sent me away as if I was not the boy’s biological mother, and I was told I should not even see him,” Nyaboke tearfully recalled.

Why did the children’s home send Sagini’s mum away?

Speaking to TUKO.co.ke, Nakuru-based police officer Sammy Ondimu, who had been liaising with Mike Sonko and Dominic Obadiah to help the distraught mother, stated that there was no valid reason to hold the child.

“Sonko had done all he could to help Baby Sagini get medical help. When Baby Sagini was placed at the children’s home, his mum could visit occasionally, but now it’s worse because Sonko wanted him released to receive medical care, but the home refused,” stated Ondimu.

Ondimu said that doctors from outside the country had offered to help Baby Sagini.

“I wonder why they are holding the child, yet the court case was finalised, the culprits were jailed, and his mum is still alive,” he said.

Nyaboke stated that the home’s management insisted she obtain a court order from Kisii to release her son.

“I got one from Nairobi, and they sent me away. Please help me, I just want my son to get help and be taken to the hospital,” she said.

Mike Sonko also shared that he had made efforts through legal means to access the child, but the children’s home is still insisting on holding him.

“We have obtained court orders from Kisii, Nairobi, and even the county children’s office, but the CEO is still adamant,” stated Sonko.

Why is Baby Sagini in a children’s home?

Baby Sagini was moved to the children’s home under witness protection after three of his relatives were found guilty of gouging his eyes.

The three, including the boy’s cousin, aunt, and grandmother Rael Nyakerario, were sentenced to 40 years, 10 years, and five years in prison, respectively.

However, Nyakerario was later released after the prosecution failed to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that she had committed the offence with which she had been charged.

Baby Sagini’s dad defends himself

Previously, TUKO.co.ke reported that Baby Sagini’s father denied claims that he was responsible for gouging his son’s eyes.

According to the father, he was away from home when Sagini went missing and only learned of the incident upon his return.

He shared that he encountered a crowd on his way home who accused him of being the mastermind behind the cruel attack that left his child blind.
