According to the DCI, the church function descended into chaos when over 100 motorcycles, each ferrying two to three passengers, rode into the venue from Kangundo Road shortly after the former DP’s entourage arrived.

The group, described as rowdy, allegedly stormed the church grounds and began demanding money from the politicians present.

Gunshots were heard during the commotion, prompting a rapid response from officers at Mwiki Police Station.

“Police at Mwiki Police Station heard gunshots at the church grounds, and were mobilised to repulse the goons, who retreated and normalcy returned,” the DCI stated.

Who fired the shots during the commotion?

Authorities have confirmed that the gunfire originated from VIP security and licensed civilian firearm holders who acted to shield the leaders from the mob.

“So far, it has been established that the gunshots heard at the church were fired by the VIP security personnel and civilian licensed firearm holders in their bid to protect the leaders from the rowdy group,” the statement added.

During the incident, several individuals fled the scene, abandoning ten motorcycles which were impounded by police. Investigations are underway to identify and apprehend those involved.

The DCI also faulted the organisers of the event for failing to notify law enforcement about the presence of high-profile guests.

“The Mwiki police command has stated that the church failed to notify the police of the planned function… and therefore, no advance security measures were deployed to handle such an eventuality,” the DCI noted.

The DCI called the incident regrettable, noting it is one of several similar events recently witnessed across the country. The National Police Service has appealed to the public to maintain order during public events.

“Incidents involving violence and intimidation not only tarnish the sanctity of community events but also pose a significant threat to the well-being of all attendees. It is crucial for individuals to express their concerns through proper channels rather than resorting to disorderly behavior that could lead to grave consequences,” the statement read.

Gachagua links Ruto to Mwiki church chaos

Following the incident, Gachagua accused President William Ruto and Nairobi governor Johnson Sakaja of orchestrating the disturbance during the church service.

Gachagua expressed outrage that political conflict had now invaded sacred spaces, calling it a worrying development in Kenya’s political scene.

He issued a stern warning, saying any attempt to eliminate him would not end his political influence but instead complicate matters for his opponents.

Despite the incident, Gachagua urged his supporters to remain peaceful and law-abiding. He stated that he trusts God’s protection and reiterated his commitment to non-violence.
