The 96th edition of the Mashemeji Derby ended in a disappointing goalless draw at the Nyayo National Stadium on Sunday, March 30.

Both sets of fans came out in large numbers, filling out Nyayo stadium to the brim for Kenya’s largest football game in history.

Despite the packed crowd, the players failed to provide the much-needed drama on the pitch as both teams settled for a point apiece after 90 minutes.

Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga and Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja were among the many fans who thronged the stadium for the game.

AFC Leopards were the better of the two teams for large periods in the first half but failed to take any of their chances.

Boniface Munyendo failed to make the most out of a wonderful cutback from Samuel Semo while Sharif Musa’s shot was stopped by Levis Opiyo on the other end.

The spirit of the derby kicked in before halftime after the two teams clashed. Munyendo came out of the brief melee with a booking as the game remained level after 45 minutes.

Gor Mahia coach Sinisa Mihic rung some changes after the break in a bid to shore up his attack. Sylvester Owino came off for Samuel Kapen while AFC Leopards brought on Victor Otieno for Ovella Ochieng.

Mihic later brought on his star man Austine Odhiambo who started on the bench after failing to fully shake off a niggling injury on time as he attempted to break Ingwe’s defence.

Both sides remained resolute and cagey as the charged atmosphere inside Nyayo Stadium made it harder to commit mistakes.
